Essay about Magic Empowers Women in La Casa de Los Espiritus
Magic empowers women in La casa de los espíritus Discuss. In Isabel Allende s first novel, La casa de
los espíritus the reader is introduced to her use of magic as a means which enables women to feel
sustained in times of difficulty and which provides them with a power base (Bennett, C. 2003:174).
Interestingly, the women s connection with the spiritual and magical stands in contrast to the men s
rejection of anything that doesn t adhere to their strict perception of morbid reality. Therefore, Allende
quite clearly outlines magical properties as essentially feminine (Shaw, D. 1997:116) and spirituality
in all its forms as a province of the female of the species (Hart, S. 2005:275) only. It can be argued
that women and magic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though some critics are of the opinion that Clara is a passive character and her silences aren t exactly
magic, Marjorie Agosín argues that Clara chose silence not out of passivity or fear but rather because
that was the only way for her to create her own space composed of hidden signs and signals (Agosín,
M. 1984:36). It therefore represents a place for her to be alone with the spirits and creates a safe haven
away from the destructiveness and aggressiveness of her husband. Even though Agosín s statement
rejects Clara s passivity, it is possible to disagree on the basis that she did not have sufficient
information, and possessed neither the power nor the tools necessary (Allende, I. 1984:41) to bring
about her liberation therefore she was forced to refer to what can be read as passive resistance. As a
result of this, Esteban is unable to connect with her and soon realizes that Clara no le pertenecía y que
si ella continuaba habitando un mundo de aparecidos [...] lo mas probable era que no llegará a
pertenecerle nunca (La casa de los espíritus, 108). Interestingly Clara s dwelling in her intrinsic reality
and lack of engagement in political matters juxtapose to the orientations of her granddaughter. Alba
has a more pro active and emancipated personality turned [...] toward work, politics and the
preoccupations of present day society (Allende, 1984:40). When compared to Alba s

John Stuart Mill s On Liberty And Utilitarianism Essay
This essay examines and inspects liberty and order conflict based on the writings of philosopher John
Stuart Mill, titled On Liberty and Utilitarianism. We will discuss how his philosophical views on
equality as fundamental to what it means to be human. We will interpret John Stuart Mill s theorist
view on equality as fundamental to the good or bad functioning of the state? The question and debate
we would also raise will be, is equality be integral the arrangements of power? Lastly, we would argue
the theorist s approach to liberty fundamentally influenced the way we view equality in the 21st
century. In John Stuart Mill works of On Liberty, the piece focuses and concerns common and social
freedom or, to take a gander at it from the opposite perspective, the nature and points of confinement
of the power that can honest to goodness be practiced by society over the person. In John Stuart Mill
works of Utilitarianism, it offers a possibility for a first standard of ethical quality, a rule that gives us
a model recognizing good and bad. The utilitarian applicant is the guideline of utility. We will convey
works from both pieces and examine his theoretical/ philosophical values of equality. Despite the fact
that all may have concurred that an activity s results for the general satisfaction and happiness were to
direct its rightness or misleading quality, the explanations for the acknowledgment of that guideline
and the utilizations to which the rule was put changed

Historical Importance of Civil Codes and Laws
Amy Webb HIS 121 02 WESTERN CIVILIZATION I Fall, 2011 Historical Importance of Civil
Codes and Laws When studying history we must consider the importance of law. Before there was
written word, and set guides for what we consider civil behavior, there was no way for a civilization to
grow under a centralized government with set laws and order to influence the actions of its population.
When a crime was committed there was no set punishment. Where there is no law there is no
transgression (KJV Bible, Romans 4:15). Historically civil code and laws have set forth social order,
encouraged education of the population and provided for identity of class and gender. The first known
set of written laws, or code of conduct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maintaining social order and creating a centralized government, promoting literacy and providing
identity of class and gender are just a few ways that civil codes and laws have had their historical
importance. All of these benefits of a written code of law allow a civilized population to expand and
give boundaries that provide for regulation of morality and social order over large populations within
the said boundaries of the law. Civil codes and laws, whether written or oral traditions of a said
people, are what has historically set forth precedents that have shaped cultures, and allowed large
populations to come together under one governing body and grow from cities into

The OgDaodth had genetically engineered his people to be their slaves. He did not have any physical
similarities to his Mother at all; he seemed to be most like his father Mythrus. Alaric s physical
features were very similar to Mythrus; also, his character very much resembled Mythrus nature.
Mythrus was a builder and engineer. His tribe s genetic specialization endowed them with the innate
aptitude to design, engineer, and build. The builders were the beasts of burden and were known for
their strength, endurance and the superior quality of their artisanship and planning. Due to this genetic
enhancement, his body also swiftly adapted to any environment. The baleful forest that he over looked

Leaving the place cloaked in shades of blues, grays and magentas. The energy of the haze was so
intense it built a wall around him, the effect it created was disorientating. It felt as if he were standing
in between the strings of time. It was as if he was not firmly rooted in any particular place or time.
That he was somehow detached from the world around him viewing the people, places, and events
through the strings of time, from some other place, time, and body. He had climbed the cliffs not only
to get away from that sensation, but also to try to get a better overview of the landscape; hoping he
might sight a pathway through the for est. The ground of the forest was enchanted; the vines that
covered it were like a hydra. They were impervious to magic, and fire. The more you cut them the
faster they grew. If you stood still for too long the forest floor would grow around your feet
intertwining between your legs. He stared at the darkened forest and watched it, as it appeared to
writhe and taunt him and felt his frustration rise yet again. Alaric rarely encountered an obstacle that
he could not readily overcome. In fact, it had been a very long time since he had experienced any sort
of challenge in his life. This journey had been a long series of delays and chal lenges, each one
spilling into the next without end. He knew the general direction he was supposed to go in, but had no

The World Is Too Much With Us
Robert Frost, who is a four time Pulitzer Prize winner in poetry, also known as American poet hero
who has written many famous poems which includes The Road Not Taken and Stopping by woods on
snowy evening . In the poem Stopping by woods on snowy evening, Frost explain how the speaker has

far away from people or go back and follow his responsibilities and spend rest of his life in city. As

which shows affinity for nature. William Wordsworth in his poem The world is too much with us,
represents similar theme as how humans have lost their connections with nature, in which in his
opinion it is now only found in memories. In his opinion, we are no longer connected with natural
world. Frost and Wordsworth in their respective poems uses unique rhyme, scheme, symbolism,
metaphor and alliteration to explain their own perspective on how people struggles between
modernize world and nature of the world and end neglecting the natural world. Frost, in his opening
line of his poem uses an Imagery sentence, Whose woods these are I think I know. (1 2) To point out

Deciding to Become a Lawyer
Lawyer Career Research
Just imagine having the opportunity to get paid for arguing. All lawyers have a passion for being able
to get their point across and prove something is the way it is. I would enjoy many things about being a
lawyer. To be a lawyer I am going to have to know the basics of the career, make the choice of
whether or not it is the right career for me, and then the steps I will have to take to become one.
A lawyer s career may look intricate and complex but just like many other careers, it can seem very
different when looking at it in depth. The two most well known types of lawyers are the ones who are
hired to either prosecute or defend someone over a civil or criminal case. Those types of lawyers are
called defense attorneys and prosecutors. A prosecutor is hired by someone who wants to gain
anything from compensation, a punishment for others, or a reward of some kind. Defense attorneys
are hired by someone who has to be defended in court to avoid paying compensation, or a type of
punishment. The main task of these lawyers are to use any evidence, document, or information they
can to help win the trial or case for their client. They can either act as an adviser or as a prosecutor
depending on what the client hires for, or if they only specialize in a certain role. Each lawyer has his
or her own specialty such as real estate, criminal, tax, etc. Lawyers can represent people on three
different levels of trials; legal, federal or criminal.

My Own Passion For Working With Young Children
Growing up I have been fortunate enough to have been taught by some truly inspirational teachers and
I am well aware of the effect they have had on my life and the choices I have made subsequently. My
own passion for working with young children extends from wanting to emulate those role models and
have the same impact on other children.
I have always known that I wanted to work with children; from the age of eleven I knew that I wanted
to become a primary school teaching. I am still as committed now as I was then of achieving that goal.
If being passionate, nurturing, focused and determinate is what you require then I am most certainly
suited for this position. I am a hardworking, confident and trustworthy person with a keen desire to
become a primary school teacher. Having spent two full terms independently managing a class, I have
gained excellent first hand experience and an increased confidence in my own abilities. I consider
myself to be a very well organized, reliable and enthusiastic individual who can not only work
extremely well as part of a team but also remain professional under stressful circumstances. From
September 2011 to January 2014 I have worked both voluntarily and paid at many primary and
secondary schools within Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. This has given me great experience on
how to support the teaching and learning of children right from Key stage 1 through to key stage 3.
During this time I worked very closely with many class teachers,

The Populist Party, Political And Economic Changes Did The...
1. What economic issues gave rise to the Populist Party, and what political and economic changes did
the party advocate? Why were they considered so radical? Due to ...falling agricultural prices and
growing economic dependency (Foner 636) in the mid nineteenth century, farmers in the South began
to face inevitable economic uncertainty. Farmers, both white and black alike, were thrown into
poverty due to sharecropping and the fall of the price of cotton, and many faced the fear of losing
everything they had due the inability to pay bank loans. Believing that their situation was caused by
...high freight rates...excessive interest rates for loans...and the fiscal policies of the government
(Foner 636), disgruntled farmers hoped to better their lives and conditions through the founding of the
Farmers Alliance in the 1870s. However, by the 1890s, the Alliance transformed into what became
known as the Populist Party. Keeping their roots in mind, the Populists sought to end what they
considered political corruption and economic inequality that arose during the Reconstruction. In order
to do so, they proposed ...the direct election of U.S. senators, government control of currency, a
graduated income tax, a system of low class public financing...the right of workers to form labor
unions...[and a] public ownership of the railroads (Foner 638). In addition to their propositions, the
Populists were considered radical due to their embracement of science and technology, their belief that

Action-Based Discretization for AI Search
Action Based Discretization for AI Search
Dr. Todd W. Neller*
Department of Computer Science Gettysburg College Campus Box 402 Gettysburg, PA 17325 1486
Introduction As computer gaming reaches ever greater heights in realism, we can expect the
complexity of simulated dynamics to reach further as well. To populate such gaming environments
with agents that behave intelligently, there must be some means of reasoning about the consequences
of agent actions. Such ability to seek out the ramifications of various possible action sequences,
commonly called lookahead , is found in programs that play chess, but there are special challenges
that face game programmers who wish to apply AI search techniques to complex continuous
dynamical systems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, we compare three different means of action parameter discretization, including a dispersion
technique that generates an approximate uniform sampling of closed action spaces. Action Based
Discretization Artificial Intelligence search algorithms search discrete systems, yet we live and reason
in a continuous world. Continuous systems must first be discretized, i.e. approximated as discrete
systems, to apply such algorithms. There are two common ways that continuous search problems are
discretized: state based discretization and action based discretization. Statebased discretization
becomes infeasible when the state space is highly dimensional. Actionbased discretization becomes
infeasible when there are too many degrees of freedom. Interestingly, biological high degree of
freedom systems are often governed by a much smaller collection of motion primitives [Mataric,
2000]. We focus here on action based discretization. Action based discretization consists of two parts:
(1) action parameter discretization and (2) action timing discretization, i.e. how and when to act. See
Figure 1. The most popular form of discretization is uniform discretization. It is common to sample
possible actions and action timings at fixed intervals. For the following algorithms, we focus on action
timing discretization. Experimental evidence of this paper and previous studies [Neller, 2000] suggests
that a fixed

The Effect Of Mir200 Family On Human Primary ATII Cell...
Research strategy
Specific Aim #1. To determine the effect of miR200 family on human primary ATII cell biology and
lung regeneration in IPF.
Hypothesis: We hypothesize that miR200 family will stimulate ATII cell proliferation and
transdifferentation to alveolar type I cells and will inhibit a fibrogenic activity of pulmonary
fibroblasts in IPF leading to lung regeneration.
Rationale:
ATII cells have stem potential and can differentiate to alveolar type I cells (3). Senescence of ATII
cells is implicated in the pathogenesis of IPF, a progressive fatal lung disorder with unknown etiology
(5). A current disease paradigm is that lung fibrosis develops as a result of unremitting insults with
genetic and aging related risk factors. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We already isolated ATII cells from human lung and cultured them using methods previously
described in the literature (7). We can also transdifferentiate ATII cells to alveolar type I cells (Fig. 2).
We found decreased ability of ATII cells isolated from IPF patients to transdifferentiate to alveolar
type I cells compared to controls. To our knowledge, this experiment has not been performed using
ATII cells obtained from individuals with IPF or other lung diseases. Moreover, we also observed
lower levels of aquaporin 5, which is a marker of alveolar type I cells (Fig. 2). These preliminary data
indicate the feasibility of proposed experiments in this application. Our results suggest the impaired
ability of ATII cells to transdifferentiate to alveolar type I cells in IPF.
1.1. To determine the potential of ATII cells to transdifferentiate to alveolar type I cells in IPF.
In this SA, we will determine pro SPC (pro surfactant protein C), SPC (surfactant protein C), SP A
(surfactant protein A), SP D (surfactant protein D) and pro SPB (pro surfactant protein B) expression,
which are markers of ATII cells in freshly isolated cells from controls and patients with IPF by
western blotting and immunocytofluorescence. We will also culture ATII cells obtained from controls
and individuals with IPF to compare their phenotype in vitro using electron microscopy.

Analysis Of Mexican Whiteboy
Book Summary:
Mexican Whiteboy is a contemporary story that takes place in National City, California, part of the
San Diego metropolitan area. The main characters in the story are sixteen year old Danny and Uno,
who are both biracial; Danny s mother is white and his father is Mexican, and Uno s mother is
Mexican and his father is African American. Over the summer, Danny and Uno find that they have a
lot in common and even though they both go through similar hardships in life, each reveals contrasting
ways of meeting a problem. Uno tries to overcome his obstacles with courage and boldness, whereas
Danny habitually digs into his wrist until it bleeds. Danny is also an incredibly talented pitcher who
could be signed by a college recruiter. However, he always shuts down and loses concentration when
he is on the mound. His uneven pitching is a metaphor for his internal struggles. Over time, Danny s
summer experiences help him to believe in himself and find his pitch: his focus.
Connections
Mexican Whiteboy s theme is developed through the main character s growth. Over time, Danny
learns the way to overcome his obstacles and how to move forward despite the drawbacks in his life.
The author uses Uno and Danny to teach the reader a life lesson. Over the summer Uno guides Danny
to learn the way to overcome his hurdles and how to progress despite drawbacks: to believe in
himself. After reading the story, I have decided to use a black lock box that teaches the theme of the

The Proposal ¸ Directed By Anne Fletcher Essay
One of my personal all time favorite movies, The Proposal¸ directed by Anne Fletcher, is a
drama/romance that illustrates two people who weren t meant to fall in love (Lieberman, 2009). The
following movie trailer assists in outlining the storyline of the movie and how a series of unforeseen
events can change animosity into romantic love.
From the beginning of the movie, Andrew and Margaret had a work relationship that embodied
intimacy. Intimacy, as defined by Kyle Hill, is [f]eelings of attachment, closeness, typified by sharing
secrets, etc. (Hill, 2012, May 18). The intimacy shared between Margaret and Andrew is due to the
nature of their career; they had spent [a]ll those late nights at the office and weekend book fairs
(Lieberman, 2009). As Margaret s assistant, Andrew handles some, if not most, of her personal and
private matters like the midnight Tampax runs and her appointments, Two years ago, your
dermatologist called and asked about a Q switched laser (Lieberman, 2009). Their work relationship
created an intimacy that typically is nonexistent between two coworkers or an employee and their
boss.
As the movie progressed, their relationship took on another component; commitment. Commitment, as
defined In The Triangular Theory of Love, is [a] willingness in the short term to create and maintain a
relationship and long term plans to sustain the relationship (Hill, 2012, May 18). The commitment
exhibited between Margaret and Andrew is not the

The Relation Between Stalin And Hitler
Throughout the course of history, a vast quantity of dictators left their impression on the world as we
know it today, each having gained notoriety as a result of their rapid rise to power and their infamous
dynamisms which made them who they are known to be.
The two most notable leaders in history who express such qualities are Joseph Stalin of the Soviet

Hypostatic Union Sociology
The hypostatic union described the integration between Jesus humanity and divinity in a single
individual. Jesus, is not only considered the incarnate son, he is also considered to be the Second
Divine Person. Within the hypostatic union, there are two aspects that help in understanding this
union. These are the ontological and physiological aspects.
The ontological aspect focuses on the Second Divine Person. Jesus assumed the human nature as his
own. With this close union between Jesus human nature and the divine Son, his human identity is
made clear. Jesus human nature allows him to exist as the immaculate human manifestation of the

Joseph Conrad Sexism
Racism is incredibly evident to readers in Joseph Conrad s famous novel, Heart of Darkness. Readers
are able to easily identify the repulsive treatment of African Americans through protagonist character
Marlow s eyes. Many are repelled by the incredibly grotesque description of the native Africans as
savages . However, the underlying theme of sexism is often overlooked in Conrad s writing. He uses
his characters to express his own opinions on a woman s place in society or lack thereof. Though this
book was written over 100 years ago, it is incredibly ironic how relevant this trend is to day. Present
day America pushes so hard to distance itself from racial prejudices whereas prejudices against
women are not only frequently recurring in society, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Contrary to many beliefs, feminists don t want to walk around shirtless. We don t hate men. We don t
want to be treated like men. We have nothing against women who wear dresses and are stay at home
moms. We also have nothing against women who put their careers first and don t want to start a
family. Feminism is the radical notion that women are people, and can be whatever they want to be.
Theodore Roosevelt once said stating a problem without a solution is just whining! , and that s not
what I want to do here. So I am going to suggest a simple solution that if taken to heart, could affect
all of mankind. Ready? Let women be whatever the hell they want to be...and respect them for it!
Because a woman who stays at home and raises a family is not a lazy gold digger. Being a mother is
one of the toughest jobs in the world, and not one to be undermined. But on the other hand, a woman
who chooses not to have children and to focus on her career is not self centered. She is just as smart
and driven as any man doing the exact same thing. It s essential that as a society we move past the
sexist mindset that we see in Heart of Darkness. We re not stuck in the Victorian Era. Women and men
must understand how we can all benefit when given equality. It sets us all free and allows us to
progress. Imagine this country s potential if we could get rid of all

Comparison Of Heroism In El Dorado
When one thinks of heroism, they tend to think of great acts of bravery, such as when someone goes
into battle against a beast and when it prevents some type of catastrophic tragedy from occurring. At
least that is what one tends to think of when referring to the act of heroism in literature. However,
there is also a different, less glorified version of heroism that is sometimes expressed in literature, but
is present in our daily lives. This form of heroism is deeply connected to the human experience in
accomplishing a life s purpose. Edgar Alan Poe s El Dorado shows a speaker who views a challenge
and makes it his life mission to go after this accolade no matter what the odds are. While, a poem
called The Lotus Eaters by Alfred Lord Tennyson shows the direct opposite in our human nature
depicting a story of those who rather settle for comfort. One is focused on the optimistic possibility of
the risk they are taking and the other is focused on the pessimistic possibility as to why they rather not
take the risk. When analyzing the psychology behind heroism, the key difference is that the knight in
Edgar Alan Poe s poem was optimistic about becoming a hero, while in Alfred Lord Tennyson s poem
the sailors completely eliminated that from being an option. Those who are optimistic about achieving
a goal have at least a chance at reaching that point, however those who are pessimistic only find
themselves with one outcome and can never reach the ultimate goal. The

What Is The Real Impact Of Geographical Factors On...
Research Design In examining the empirical data of post Communist reform, I hope to exhibit the real
impact of geographical factors on political and economic reform in an effort to abandon conventional
explanations of this discussion. My intent with this research is to introduce the notion that spatial
issues can be as much of a determinant of state behavior, as any other factor. This is not to prove that
certain explanations are better than others, but rather to underscore the validity in geographical

Second, Polity IV offers a much more detailed signal of change than most other indicators of
democracy. The data set ranges from 10 to +10, in which a Polity Score is determined through a
country s placement in one of three categories: autocracies ( 10 to 6), anocracies ( 5 to 5), and
democracies (6 to 10). In this, a 20 point measurement of political class is produced of each country,
every year. To measure economic reform, I chose the Index of Economic Freedom; an annual index
and ranking system created in 1995 through the Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal. This
particular tool evaluates countries on ten economic factors:
1. trade policy 6. property rights
2. taxation 7. banking
3. government intervention in the economy 8. wage and price controls
4. monetary policy 9. regulation
5. capital flows and foreign investment 10. black market
As a means of investigating principled governance I focused solely on the Economic Freedom
measures of trade policy, government intervention, and capital flows and foreign investment. I chose
only these indicators because I believe they provide thorough insight into the conjoining issues of post
Communist legacies and overall geographical access namely, how close they are to a body of water
large enough for ports. The scores for this computation are ranked as follows: Repressed (0 to 49.9),

Analysis Of Bless Me, Ultima
Bless me Ultima Lap
Syeda Ahmed
Prompt 4
Mr. Amoroso pr3
September 27 2016 .
Death in one s life time is unavoidable. In a way those effected by death, die themselves but ultimately
shed that part of their life to grow a new stronger and wiser layer in its place. Rudolfo Anaya shows
this perfectly in his novel Bless Me, Ultima, with the use of his character Antonio. Anaya uses death
as a catalyst to the solution for Antonio s frustrations on religion. Each death showing significances to
the plot and or on Tony because of how it caused him to question his beliefs and the beliefs pressured
on him. Death is one of the sole constant in this novel, it begins and ends in death to where one can
say Anaya interprets death to pioneer the resolution for Antonio s ambivalence.
Young Antonio Tony Juan Márez y Luna is the product of a mother who in bound by the earth and
God and a father who s soul is as free as the sea. Mother Maria Luna y Márez comes from the Luna
blood where God and the farm land is praised; her wish being that Tony will grow to become the next
Luna priest. On the other hand we have his father Gabriel Márez a man of the wild and lionhearted
llano blood who never really pressures his son to become anything; but had his own remaining dreams
of moving to California the land of milk and honey as he calls it and having one of his children assist
him in the endeavor. He lives in constant tug of war between which bloodline he would follow as he

Case Study On Infosys
Indian companies have finally woken up from their slumber to take cognizance of the stark correlation
between managing their succession plan and their financial turnover.
Infosys should receive a gold star to demonstrate how to fail at succession planning. Their
performance graph has been declining and they have lost their title of being the industry bellweather,
which clearly indicates that they have to deal with people who head the organization.
WHAT WENT WRONG ?
Infosys, through its life of 32 years, has always been led by one of the founders like Narayana Murthy,
Nandan Nilekani, S Gopalkrishnan and SD Shibulal.
Even when Mr. Murthy was a non executive member, the demands from him were not so. Perhaps the

2. In order to identify the internal candidates, they should first earmark some requisite competencies
To turn around the company, the new manager should be innovative, and expertise in high sales area
like cloud computing which allows clients to ditch bulky and costly servers for network based
software and storage in remote data centres.
Infosys, being a risk averse company, could not move up the value chain and should try to reverse this
trend by recruiting a leader who can take bold steps and calculated risks.
He should be able to fill the leadership vacuum created by the exodus of senior members, many of
whom were responsible for key business sectors and winning clients.
3. After identifying these competencies, they should identify the high potential employees.
This can be done by using 360 degree feedback. Though this is subjective, it has some effectiveness.
The benefit if this will be that the scarce resources will be directed at coaching those employees which
show maximum promise. This will enhance

El Salvador Research Paper
Current Day El Salvador
The central american nation, El Salvador, holds a rising economic status, currently sitting at 66th in
the world a much welcomed state when compared to their standings in 1980 during their civil war. El
Salvador s regionally ranked 16th, with the population of 6.4 million people rising at a rate 2.4% and
the 5 year compound growth population of 2.1% ,the GDP is $52.9 Billion. A great influencer in the
establishment of tourism is the amount of public spending. El Salvador is a very culturally rich nation,
but similar to the United States some of its regions suffer from gang related violence. The adoption
rate of technology in El Salvador is much slower than that in america, but that can be changed with

Early Aurignacians
The early Aurignacian layer contains only lithics and lacks the art and ornamentation pieces found in
the other three Aurignacian sections. Hahn originally wanted to call this layer proto Aurignacian, This
suggestion by Hahn related to his observation that AH III at Geißenklösterle lacked split based bone
points, which he considered the hallmark of the early Aurignacian (Nicholas J. Conard 2011).
Continued research shows that this is not the case, the Aurignacian occupation in the area fits the time
period of the early Aurignacian and not the proto Aurignacian sometimes referred to as the Fumanian,
with its geographic focus in Mediterranean Europe (Bon 2002; Teyssandier and Liolios 2003; Bolus
2004; Conard and Bolus 2006), (Nicholas J. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first answer could be as simple as they wiped them out through warfare. Neanderthals are thought
to have lived in smaller groups and not to have reproduced as much as modern humans due to
exploiting fewer resources, this would have given the Aurignacian people an easy advantage, but it is
also commonly accepted that it would not have been needed. It is thought that through better use of
resources and a willingness to take more resources that H.Sapiens Sapiens could have merely slowly
taken over from Neanderthals by taking up all the resources for their growing population resulting in
slowly starving the remaining Neanderthals. A good example of the different mindset between the two
groups when it came to food is what happened to cave bears when modern humans arrived.
Neanderthals and cave bears seem to have coexisted in a dynamic equilibrium with both species able
to survive in the same region over long periods of time. With the arrival of modern humans this
dynamic equilibrium was disturbed. Cave bear hunting was intensified and more bones show
anthropogenic modifications and even direct evidence of hunting (Münzel et al. 2001; Münzel and
Conard 2004b), (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). It wasn t only food that the groups would have had to
compete for, but also resources for crafting of tools, art, and instruments as well as fire wood. The
Middle Paleolithic and Aurignacian are characterized by concentrations of burnt bone, indicating that
the environment did not always contain sufficient quantities of wood for the heating and lighting
needs of both populations (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). It is commonly thought that without the
introduction on modern humans Neanderthals would not have gone extinct. Neanderthal culture was
not necessarily inferior, merely different and not suited to compete in the style it was forced

Tertiary Education Should Be Required As A Prerequisite...
Title: Tertiary education should be required as a prerequisite in order to join the police force.
Introduction:
Problem: Without prior tertiary education, police are entering the workforce under skilled.
Claim: All police should be required to have tertiary education as it promotes police professionalism,
improves standards in both policing and security and encourages personal growth and ethical decision
making.
Reasoning: By making tertiary education a prerequisite when joining the police force, it is ensuring
that all potential police officers are fully equipped with the highly necessary, and somewhat
complicated, skills set in order to protect and serve the public.
Definition: Relating to or denoting education at a level beyond that ... Show more content on

Studies have concluded that higher education has an impact on the views of police officers towards
racial/ethnic minorities, as well as on levels of professionalism and on standards of service to the
community (Archbold, Hasselli Manist, 2008)
Warrant:
Trofymowych (2008) implies that while university education is not the only factor required for police
to obtain professional recognition, it is an essential part of the professionalization process, without
which police will never obtain professional status .
Backing:
In order to obtain police professionalism , tertiary education is highly advised.
Grounds 2: Tertiary education improves standards in policing
Evidence:
Webb (2008) states that tertiary education and training have frequently been recommended as key
requirements to improve standards within policing and security.
In more recent times, researchers have studied and analyzed methodical social observations of 638
officers in two policing departments, discovering that officers with more education were less expected
to use force. (Webb, 2008)
A study was conducted which uncovered that officers with a university degree were less likely to use
verbal and physical force in comparison to their colleagues, where their highest education was a high
school certificate. Similarly, officers with some university experience were less likely to engage in
verbal force opposed to their less educated colleagues. (Paoline Terrill, 2007)

Evaluation Of The Clinical Decision Making Process
Clinical reasoning can be best described by the process of collecting indications, processing,
understand the problem or situation, plan and implement interventions, asses outcomes and learn
reflect on the whole process (del Bueno, 2005). Positive outcomes of this process can be determined
by an individual s preconceptions, attitude, perspective and willingness (mentally and physically)
(McCarthy, 2003). In a report by the clinical excellence commission of NSW Health they conclude
that there are three explanations for negative patient outcomes in which are failure to correctly
diagnose, failure to adequately implement appropriate treatment and inability to manage
complications. In this essay the author will outline a situation in which they were involved in
explaining the background of the situation, factors which influenced a clinical decision to be made
whilst describing the clinical decision making process.

Analysis Of The Book Jack The Ripper
The Complete Jack the Ripper By: Donald Rumblelow
Publisher: New York Graphic Society, Year: 1975, Pages: 217
This book is about the history of Jack the Ripper, it s about his life and how he killed. It also talks
about his life in the Whitechapel district was.
This book is about how he killed and what Jack the Ripper did, it tells about his life and what
happened (This book is out dated because we have discovered more since 1975). It also shows lots of
pictures, they weren t very good pictures but they were there. The book shows most things he did. He
killed at least 5 prostitutes and took apart their bodies. This terrorized the Whitechapel district, he did
this from August 7th to September 10th in 1888. It s a mystery on how he died according to the book,
but keep in mind the book is outdated.
It s a decent book but I didn t find it very interesting, it started out very slow but picked up during the
middle of it. I also didn t understand as much as I wanted too. I could understand how people like the
book though because of what it is. Jack the Ripper and the mystery behind him makes him interesting
just not my thing. Its successful because it was one of the best written books about him of this time,
and could be used to study on him. It s also successful because of this reason, a lot of people have
probably done a book report or a report in general on him and gained interest for him.

Ancient Greek Art And Its Impact On Ancient Greece
Ancient Greek art has been one of the most influential art forms in the past centuries. The Keros
sculptures predominantly stand out while referring to the ancient Greek scluptures and art. The Keros
sculptures were carved purely out of marble and were a form of Cycladic art that was created in a
small island called Cyclades in 2600 2400 B.C. The Cycladic Islands of Greece are set in the Aegean
Sea. The ancient Greeks called these islands the kyklades, a scattered kyklos, or circle, of islands
around the holy island and sanctuary of Apollo, Delos.
The very first Keros sculpture was founded in the year 1963 by Lord Renfrew. The only unfortunate
event that occurred during excavation was that almost none of these Keros sculptures were found in
their complete form. Only fragments of these sculptures remained. It has been noticed, that all through
history, the Keros scultpures have been incrediblly difficult to analyze and interpret due to lack of
background information and it s obvious missing parts. An abudance of myths surround these
sculptures since Ancient Greece is also known for its devotion to Greek mythology. The significance,
use, and meaning of the figures are unclear. There is even debate about whether the figures were
meant to lie flat or to stand against a wall there is no definitive evidence either way. Numerous
explanations about the significance of the figurines have been proposed: the figurines may have been
apotropaic (i.e., to ward off evil) or served as

The Nuclear Of Uranium And The Atomic Bomb
Introduction
Beginning in 1941 the exploration of uranium 235 and the atomic bomb began. The bomb would be
used against Japan to end the deadly encounters during World War II in exchange for unconditional
surrender. In 1945 the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima killing over 190,000 people and then another
bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing about 70,000 people. Japan surrendered bringing an end to the
war but this was only the beginning of what is known as the nuclear age.
Historical context
German physicist, Otto Hahn and German chemist, Fritz Strassmann, began conducting experiments
on uranium when, in 1938, the two were completely bewildered by the results of their experiment and
sent the outcome to physicist Lise Meitner who was astounded by the results as well. Otto Hahn, Fritz
Strassmann, and Lise Meitner had become the first to recognize that uranium could split and release
energy. ( Harnessing of Nuclear Fission. ) Soon after though, the war started.
World War 2 was started September 1, 1939 by Adolf Hitler and lasted until September 2, 1945. It was
the most widespread and deadliest war in history involving over 30 countries and resulting in about 50
million deaths. The major aggressors were Germany, Italy, and Japan. 6 million of the people killed
were in concentration camps because they were Jewish. ( World War II History )
During the war Germany took over a small town, St. Joachimsthal in Bohemia that contained a
uranium mine. Physicists Leo

R V. Bizi Case Analysis
Reasonable people will generally go a long distance to protect their loved ones. However, most
reasonable people would believe that killing someone in order to protect their loved ones would be
immoral and harmful. In the case of R v. Buzizi [2013], a man killed another in a supposed effort to
protect his cousin. On an early morning in Montréal, the accused s cousin and the victim ensued in a
brawl (Casey). The initial fight was broken up by a third party. A few moments later, the accused, Mr.
Buzizi, who saw the initial assault from afar, intervened and pushed the victim (Casey). Then, Mr.
Buzizi noticed that the victim had an exacto knife, and that his cousin had a serious wound on his neck
(R v. Buzizi, para 24). For fear that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Buzizi [2013]. The objective requirement needed to prove provocation and reduce the conviction to
manslaughter was not apparent in the case, as a reasonable or ordinary person would likely have left
the area, either by not intervening in the altercation in the first place or by deciding to leave once the
victim had dropped his knife. The subjective requirement needed to prove provocation was not met
either, as Buzizi s recollection of the events suggested that he had full awareness of his actions. Also,
although he had pent up emotions, when the victim dropped his knife, once again, there was an
obvious opportunity for Buzizi to think for a moment and make the decision to get away. This would
have mitigated the feelings of fear Buzizi stated he had felt, and it would not have come at the cost of
a life. However, Buzizi instead made the conscious decision to stab the victim multiple times, ending
his life. Since the appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada was actually accepted, this spells out a need
for the Criminal Code to clarify some of the ambiguities with respect to provocation. For instance, in
Section 232 (2) where it states that an ordinary person is deprived of self control, it may be wise to
specify the level of proportionality required between the lack of self control and the degree of the
wrongfulness of the provoking act. If the criminal law allows the threat of an exacto knife to justify
stabbing the holder of that exacto knife multiple times when their guard is down, then soon the
criminal law may allow future actions that are even more disproportionate to the circumstances to go
relatively

What Is Real Courage
I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is man with a gun in
his hand. It s when you know you re licked before you begin, but you gain anyway and see it through
no matter what, (Lee, PAGE #). Atticus Finch believes that courage is not fighting with a gun, but it is
actually fighting for a cause you believe in even if you know you won t win.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the Finches are a well known family throughout
Maycomb County, Alabama. Scout and Jem, children of Atticus, spend their days playing around and

response to this which could ve affected Cecil Jacob. These opinions may influence him to believe
that Atticus defending Tom is a sin or shameful. As a young child, he doesn t know any better but to
believe in rumors and to listen to what the adults say. Later on, Atticus and his children join Aunt
Alexandra for Christmas at Finches Landing. During this time, Scout and her cousin, Francis, are
arguing and Francis provokes her by saying, .... Grandam says it s bad enough he lets you all run wild,
but now he s turned out a nigger lover, we ll never be able to walk the streets of Macomb agin. He s
ruinin the family, that s what he s doin , (Lee,83). Even though they are family, they start to turn
against Atticus because his decision could ruin the family s reputation and name. Since Francis may
not fully understand why Atticus is defending Tom, he chooses to listen to his other family members
and his opinion is formed and shaped around what they say. In this case, his Grandma tells Francis
about Atticus and that influences his opinion. One of the main reasons why the community

The Nazi s Use of Triangles in the Concentration Camps Essay
As thousands of people were being deported into the concentration camp they didn t know who they

were like rats trapped in the corner by the Nazi officers who were like cats ready to prance at them. As
they were assigned to their barracks they relieved triangles made of fabric sewn on the jackets and
shirts ( Nazi Concentration Camp Badges ). The badge of shame had seven different types of colors,
and each color had a specific meaning ( The Holocaust Revealed ). I think that these triangles helped

There were single triangle, double triangles, and some of them had letter printed on their stars. The
doubles stars had two meanings. If there was a Jewish Political they would have to wear two triangles
overlapping each other red and yellow or Jewish criminals would have to wear green and yellow
(Mazal). The letters printed on the stars also had a meaning (Elman). For example B would be for
Belgians or F for French (Nazi Concentration Camp Badges). Their color coding system was easy for
them to see whose who. First, political prisoners wore red triangles. They were the first prisoners to be
sent to the concentration camp (Testard). In this group there were communists, social democratic, and
anyone who rejected Nazi s regime ( The Holocaust ). Second, criminals wore green triangles. Green
triangles were given to who had done minor crimes ( Color Coded Holy Wars ). Crimes such as
violating drug laws there was only about 12 percent of criminals. Third, homosexuals wore pink
triangles. Pink triangles were given to male prisoners who were sent because of their homosexuality
(Safier). The color pink was easily recognized so many people humiliated them everyday ( Triangles ).
But also a lot of people thought that homosexuality was contagious, but still curable (Elman). Fourth,
the Roma gypsies wore black triangles ( Dachau ). The crippled, disabled, homeless, and lesbians

Analysis Of Sonny s Blues By James Baldwin
In the short story, Sonny s Blues, by James Baldwin, there are two brother that live in Harlem during
the Harlem Renaissance. The older brother, whose name is never mentioned, was given responsibility
of Sonny by their mother before she passed away. Sonny is the younger of the two and wants to be a
jazz pianist, but his older brother does not understand this, while he is an algebra school teacher.
Sonny and his brother stop communicating. Later, the older brother is going to his job when he sees in
the newspaper that his younger brother, Sonny, had been arrested for selling and possessing cocaine,
or as it is called in the story, horse. Sonny s brother never writes Sonny in jail until his daughter,
Grace, died of polio. After Sonny gets out of jail, they begin to get close and his brother starts to
appreciate Sonny s love for jazz. James Baldwin s childhood was full of Christianity. At the beginning
of Sonny s Blues by James Baldwin, the narrator notes that Baldwin s, father was a Pentecostal
minister (58) and Baldwin started to give sermons while he was still in his teen years. This lead him
closer to God influencing him to write his first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, which was based out
of a church and its members. Religion was an important aspect of James Baldwin s life and by
knowing this, one can better understand the text. Throughout Sonny s Blues, there are biblical
symbols that have deeper meanings. James Baldwin suggested many biblical references

  • 2. Essay about Magic Empowers Women in La Casa de Los Espiritus Magic empowers women in La casa de los espíritus Discuss. In Isabel Allende s first novel, La casa de los espíritus the reader is introduced to her use of magic as a means which enables women to feel sustained in times of difficulty and which provides them with a power base (Bennett, C. 2003:174). Interestingly, the women s connection with the spiritual and magical stands in contrast to the men s rejection of anything that doesn t adhere to their strict perception of morbid reality. Therefore, Allende quite clearly outlines magical properties as essentially feminine (Shaw, D. 1997:116) and spirituality in all its forms as a province of the female of the species (Hart, S. 2005:275) only. It can be argued that women and magic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though some critics are of the opinion that Clara is a passive character and her silences aren t exactly magic, Marjorie Agosín argues that Clara chose silence not out of passivity or fear but rather because that was the only way for her to create her own space composed of hidden signs and signals (Agosín, M. 1984:36). It therefore represents a place for her to be alone with the spirits and creates a safe haven away from the destructiveness and aggressiveness of her husband. Even though Agosín s statement rejects Clara s passivity, it is possible to disagree on the basis that she did not have sufficient information, and possessed neither the power nor the tools necessary (Allende, I. 1984:41) to bring about her liberation therefore she was forced to refer to what can be read as passive resistance. As a result of this, Esteban is unable to connect with her and soon realizes that Clara no le pertenecía y que si ella continuaba habitando un mundo de aparecidos [...] lo mas probable era que no llegará a pertenecerle nunca (La casa de los espíritus, 108). Interestingly Clara s dwelling in her intrinsic reality and lack of engagement in political matters juxtapose to the orientations of her granddaughter. Alba has a more pro active and emancipated personality turned [...] toward work, politics and the preoccupations of present day society (Allende, 1984:40). When compared to Alba s ... • 3. John Stuart Mill s On Liberty And Utilitarianism Essay This essay examines and inspects liberty and order conflict based on the writings of philosopher John Stuart Mill, titled On Liberty and Utilitarianism. We will discuss how his philosophical views on equality as fundamental to what it means to be human. We will interpret John Stuart Mill s theorist view on equality as fundamental to the good or bad functioning of the state? The question and debate we would also raise will be, is equality be integral the arrangements of power? Lastly, we would argue the theorist s approach to liberty fundamentally influenced the way we view equality in the 21st century. In John Stuart Mill works of On Liberty, the piece focuses and concerns common and social freedom or, to take a gander at it from the opposite perspective, the nature and points of confinement of the power that can honest to goodness be practiced by society over the person. In John Stuart Mill works of Utilitarianism, it offers a possibility for a first standard of ethical quality, a rule that gives us a model recognizing good and bad. The utilitarian applicant is the guideline of utility. We will convey works from both pieces and examine his theoretical/ philosophical values of equality. Despite the fact that all may have concurred that an activity s results for the general satisfaction and happiness were to direct its rightness or misleading quality, the explanations for the acknowledgment of that guideline and the utilizations to which the rule was put changed ... • 4. Historical Importance of Civil Codes and Laws Amy Webb HIS 121 02 WESTERN CIVILIZATION I Fall, 2011 Historical Importance of Civil Codes and Laws When studying history we must consider the importance of law. Before there was written word, and set guides for what we consider civil behavior, there was no way for a civilization to grow under a centralized government with set laws and order to influence the actions of its population. When a crime was committed there was no set punishment. Where there is no law there is no transgression (KJV Bible, Romans 4:15). Historically civil code and laws have set forth social order, encouraged education of the population and provided for identity of class and gender. His tribe s genetic specialization endowed them with the innate aptitude to design, engineer, and build. It was as if he was not firmly rooted in any particular place or time. That he was somehow detached from the world around him viewing the people, places, and events through the strings of time, from some other place, time, and body. He had climbed the cliffs not only to get away from that sensation, but also to try to get a better overview of the landscape; hoping he might sight a pathway through the for est. The ground of the forest was enchanted; the vines that covered it were like a hydra. They were impervious to magic, and fire. The more you cut them the faster they grew. • 7. Deciding to Become a Lawyer Lawyer Career Research Just imagine having the opportunity to get paid for arguing. All lawyers have a passion for being able to get their point across and prove something is the way it is. I would enjoy many things about being a lawyer. To be a lawyer I am going to have to know the basics of the career, make the choice of whether or not it is the right career for me, and then the steps I will have to take to become one. A lawyer s career may look intricate and complex but just like many other careers, it can seem very different when looking at it in depth. The two most well known types of lawyers are the ones who are hired to either prosecute or defend someone over a civil or criminal case. Those types of lawyers are called defense attorneys and prosecutors. A prosecutor is hired by someone who wants to gain anything from compensation, a punishment for others, or a reward of some kind. Defense attorneys are hired by someone who has to be defended in court to avoid paying compensation, or a type of punishment. The main task of these lawyers are to use any evidence, document, or information they can to help win the trial or case for their client. They can either act as an adviser or as a prosecutor depending on what the client hires for, or if they only specialize in a certain role. Each lawyer has his or her own specialty such as real estate, criminal, tax, etc. Lawyers can represent people on three different levels of trials; legal, federal or criminal. ... My Own Passion For Working With Young Children Growing up I have been fortunate enough to have been taught by some truly inspirational teachers and I am well aware of the effect they have had on my life and the choices I have made subsequently. My own passion for working with young children extends from wanting to emulate those role models and have the same impact on other children. I have always known that I wanted to work with children; from the age of eleven I knew that I wanted to become a primary school teaching. I am still as committed now as I was then of achieving that goal. If being passionate, nurturing, focused and determinate is what you require then I am most certainly suited for this position. I am a hardworking, confident and trustworthy person with a keen desire to become a primary school teacher. Having spent two full terms independently managing a class, I have gained excellent first hand experience and an increased confidence in my own abilities. I consider myself to be a very well organized, reliable and enthusiastic individual who can not only work extremely well as part of a team but also remain professional under stressful circumstances. From September 2011 to January 2014 I have worked both voluntarily and paid at many primary and secondary schools within Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. • 9. The Populist Party, Political And Economic Changes Did The... 1. What economic issues gave rise to the Populist Party, and what political and economic changes did the party advocate? Why were they considered so radical? Due to ...falling agricultural prices and growing economic dependency (Foner 636) in the mid nineteenth century, farmers in the South began to face inevitable economic uncertainty. Farmers, both white and black alike, were thrown into poverty due to sharecropping and the fall of the price of cotton, and many faced the fear of losing everything they had due the inability to pay bank loans. Believing that their situation was caused by ...high freight rates...excessive interest rates for loans...and the fiscal policies of the government (Foner 636), disgruntled farmers hoped to better their lives and conditions through the founding of the Farmers Alliance in the 1870s. However, by the 1890s, the Alliance transformed into what became known as the Populist Party. Keeping their roots in mind, the Populists sought to end what they considered political corruption and economic inequality that arose during the Reconstruction. In order to do so, they proposed ...the direct election of U.S. senators, government control of currency, a graduated income tax, a system of low class public financing...the right of workers to form labor unions...[and a] public ownership of the railroads (Foner 638). Neller* Department of Computer Science Gettysburg College Campus Box 402 Gettysburg, PA 17325 1486 Introduction As computer gaming reaches ever greater heights in realism, we can expect the complexity of simulated dynamics to reach further as well. To populate such gaming environments with agents that behave intelligently, there must be some means of reasoning about the consequences of agent actions. Such ability to seek out the ramifications of various possible action sequences, commonly called lookahead , is found in programs that play chess, but there are special challenges that face game programmers who wish to apply AI search techniques to complex continuous dynamical systems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, we compare three different means of action parameter discretization, including a dispersion technique that generates an approximate uniform sampling of closed action spaces. Action Based Discretization Artificial Intelligence search algorithms search discrete systems, yet we live and reason in a continuous world. Continuous systems must first be discretized, i.e. approximated as discrete systems, to apply such algorithms. There are two common ways that continuous search problems are discretized: state based discretization and action based discretization. Statebased discretization becomes infeasible when the state space is highly dimensional. Actionbased discretization becomes infeasible when there are too many degrees of freedom. Interestingly, biological high degree of freedom systems are often governed by a much smaller collection of motion primitives [Mataric, 2000]. We focus here on action based discretization. Action based discretization consists of two parts: (1) action parameter discretization and (2) action timing discretization, i.e. how and when to act. See Figure 1. The most popular form of discretization is uniform discretization. It is common to sample possible actions and action timings at fixed intervals. For the following algorithms, we focus on action timing discretization. Experimental evidence of this paper and previous studies [Neller, 2000] suggests that a fixed ... • 11. The Effect Of Mir200 Family On Human Primary ATII Cell... Research strategy Specific Aim #1. To determine the effect of miR200 family on human primary ATII cell biology and lung regeneration in IPF. Hypothesis: We hypothesize that miR200 family will stimulate ATII cell proliferation and transdifferentation to alveolar type I cells and will inhibit a fibrogenic activity of pulmonary fibroblasts in IPF leading to lung regeneration. Rationale: ATII cells have stem potential and can differentiate to alveolar type I cells (3). Senescence of ATII cells is implicated in the pathogenesis of IPF, a progressive fatal lung disorder with unknown etiology (5). A current disease paradigm is that lung fibrosis develops as a result of unremitting insults with genetic and aging related risk factors. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We already isolated ATII cells from human lung and cultured them using methods previously described in the literature (7). We can also transdifferentiate ATII cells to alveolar type I cells (Fig. 2). We found decreased ability of ATII cells isolated from IPF patients to transdifferentiate to alveolar type I cells compared to controls. To our knowledge, this experiment has not been performed using ATII cells obtained from individuals with IPF or other lung diseases. Moreover, we also observed lower levels of aquaporin 5, which is a marker of alveolar type I cells (Fig. 2). These preliminary data indicate the feasibility of proposed experiments in this application. Our results suggest the impaired ability of ATII cells to transdifferentiate to alveolar type I cells in IPF. 1.1. To determine the potential of ATII cells to transdifferentiate to alveolar type I cells in IPF. In this SA, we will determine pro SPC (pro surfactant protein C), SPC (surfactant protein C), SP A (surfactant protein A), SP D (surfactant protein D) and pro SPB (pro surfactant protein B) expression, which are markers of ATII cells in freshly isolated cells from controls and patients with IPF by western blotting and immunocytofluorescence. The main characters in the story are sixteen year old Danny and Uno, who are both biracial; Danny s mother is white and his father is Mexican, and Uno s mother is Mexican and his father is African American. Over the summer, Danny and Uno find that they have a lot in common and even though they both go through similar hardships in life, each reveals contrasting ways of meeting a problem. Uno tries to overcome his obstacles with courage and boldness, whereas Danny habitually digs into his wrist until it bleeds. Danny is also an incredibly talented pitcher who could be signed by a college recruiter. However, he always shuts down and loses concentration when he is on the mound. His uneven pitching is a metaphor for his internal struggles. Over time, Danny s summer experiences help him to believe in himself and find his pitch: his focus. Connections Mexican Whiteboy s theme is developed through the main character s growth. Over time, Danny learns the way to overcome his obstacles and how to move forward despite the drawbacks in his life. The author uses Uno and Danny to teach the reader a life lesson. The Proposal ¬∏ Directed By Anne Fletcher Essay One of my personal all time favorite movies, The Proposal¸ directed by Anne Fletcher, is a drama/romance that illustrates two people who weren t meant to fall in love (Lieberman, 2009). The following movie trailer assists in outlining the storyline of the movie and how a series of unforeseen events can change animosity into romantic love. From the beginning of the movie, Andrew and Margaret had a work relationship that embodied intimacy. Intimacy, as defined by Kyle Hill, is [f]eelings of attachment, closeness, typified by sharing secrets, etc. (Hill, 2012, May 18). The intimacy shared between Margaret and Andrew is due to the nature of their career; they had spent [a]ll those late nights at the office and weekend book fairs (Lieberman, 2009). As Margaret s assistant, Andrew handles some, if not most, of her personal and private matters like the midnight Tampax runs and her appointments, Two years ago, your dermatologist called and asked about a Q switched laser (Lieberman, 2009). Their work relationship created an intimacy that typically is nonexistent between two coworkers or an employee and their boss. As the movie progressed, their relationship took on another component; commitment. Many are repelled by the incredibly grotesque description of the native Africans as savages . However, the underlying theme of sexism is often overlooked in Conrad s writing. He uses his characters to express his own opinions on a woman s place in society or lack thereof. Though this book was written over 100 years ago, it is incredibly ironic how relevant this trend is to day. Present day America pushes so hard to distance itself from racial prejudices whereas prejudices against women are not only frequently recurring in society, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Contrary to many beliefs, feminists don t want to walk around shirtless. We don t hate men. We don t want to be treated like men. We have nothing against women who wear dresses and are stay at home moms. We also have nothing against women who put their careers first and don t want to start a family. Feminism is the radical notion that women are people, and can be whatever they want to be. Theodore Roosevelt once said stating a problem without a solution is just whining! , and that s not what I want to do here. So I am going to suggest a simple solution that if taken to heart, could affect all of mankind. Ready? Let women be whatever the hell they want to be...and respect them for it! Because a woman who stays at home and raises a family is not a lazy gold digger. Being a mother is one of the toughest jobs in the world, and not one to be undermined. But on the other hand, a woman who chooses not to have children and to focus on her career is not self centered. She is just as smart and driven as any man doing the exact same thing. It s essential that as a society we move past the sexist mindset that we see in Heart of Darkness. We re not stuck in the Victorian Era. Women and men must understand how we can all benefit when given equality. It sets us all free and allows us to progress. Imagine this country s potential if we could get rid of all ... • 19. Comparison Of Heroism In El Dorado When one thinks of heroism, they tend to think of great acts of bravery, such as when someone goes into battle against a beast and when it prevents some type of catastrophic tragedy from occurring. At least that is what one tends to think of when referring to the act of heroism in literature. However, there is also a different, less glorified version of heroism that is sometimes expressed in literature, but is present in our daily lives. This form of heroism is deeply connected to the human experience in accomplishing a life s purpose. Edgar Alan Poe s El Dorado shows a speaker who views a challenge and makes it his life mission to go after this accolade no matter what the odds are. While, a poem called The Lotus Eaters by Alfred Lord Tennyson shows the direct opposite in our human nature depicting a story of those who rather settle for comfort. One is focused on the optimistic possibility of the risk they are taking and the other is focused on the pessimistic possibility as to why they rather not take the risk. When analyzing the psychology behind heroism, the key difference is that the knight in Edgar Alan Poe s poem was optimistic about becoming a hero, while in Alfred Lord Tennyson s poem the sailors completely eliminated that from being an option. Those who are optimistic about achieving a goal have at least a chance at reaching that point, however those who are pessimistic only find themselves with one outcome and can never reach the ultimate goal. Research Design In examining the empirical data of post Communist reform, I hope to exhibit the real impact of geographical factors on political and economic reform in an effort to abandon conventional explanations of this discussion. My intent with this research is to introduce the notion that spatial issues can be as much of a determinant of state behavior, as any other factor. This is not to prove that certain explanations are better than others, but rather to underscore the validity in geographical explanations; even if variables are not exclusively affiliated to the central subject of my study, they can still hold powerful implications. Continued research shows that this is not the case, the Aurignacian occupation in the area fits the time period of the early Aurignacian and not the proto Aurignacian sometimes referred to as the Fumanian, with its geographic focus in Mediterranean Europe (Bon 2002; Teyssandier and Liolios 2003; Bolus 2004; Conard and Bolus 2006), (Nicholas J. ... Neanderthals are thought to have lived in smaller groups and not to have reproduced as much as modern humans due to exploiting fewer resources, this would have given the Aurignacian people an easy advantage, but it is also commonly accepted that it would not have been needed. It is thought that through better use of resources and a willingness to take more resources that H.Sapiens Sapiens could have merely slowly taken over from Neanderthals by taking up all the resources for their growing population resulting in slowly starving the remaining Neanderthals. A good example of the different mindset between the two groups when it came to food is what happened to cave bears when modern humans arrived. Neanderthals and cave bears seem to have coexisted in a dynamic equilibrium with both species able to survive in the same region over long periods of time. With the arrival of modern humans this dynamic equilibrium was disturbed. Cave bear hunting was intensified and more bones show anthropogenic modifications and even direct evidence of hunting (Münzel et al. 2001; Münzel and Conard 2004b), (Nicholas J. Conard 2011). It wasn t only food that the groups would have had to compete for, but also resources for crafting of tools, art, and instruments as well as fire wood. The Middle Paleolithic and Aurignacian are characterized by concentrations of burnt bone, indicating that the environment did not always contain sufficient quantities of wood for the heating and lighting needs of both populations (Nicholas J. The Keros sculptures predominantly stand out while referring to the ancient Greek scluptures and art. The Keros sculptures were carved purely out of marble and were a form of Cycladic art that was created in a small island called Cyclades in 2600 2400 B.C. The Cycladic Islands of Greece are set in the Aegean Sea. The ancient Greeks called these islands the kyklades, a scattered kyklos, or circle, of islands around the holy island and sanctuary of Apollo, Delos. The very first Keros sculpture was founded in the year 1963 by Lord Renfrew. The only unfortunate event that occurred during excavation was that almost none of these Keros sculptures were found in their complete form. Only fragments of these sculptures remained. It has been noticed, that all through history, the Keros scultpures have been incrediblly difficult to analyze and interpret due to lack of background information and it s obvious missing parts. The bomb would be used against Japan to end the deadly encounters during World War II in exchange for unconditional surrender. In 1945 the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima killing over 190,000 people and then another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing about 70,000 people. Japan surrendered bringing an end to the war but this was only the beginning of what is known as the nuclear age. Historical context German physicist, Otto Hahn and German chemist, Fritz Strassmann, began conducting experiments on uranium when, in 1938, the two were completely bewildered by the results of their experiment and sent the outcome to physicist Lise Meitner who was astounded by the results as well. Otto Hahn, Fritz Strassmann, and Lise Meitner had become the first to recognize that uranium could split and release energy. ( Harnessing of Nuclear Fission. ) Soon after though, the war started. World War 2 was started September 1, 1939 by Adolf Hitler and lasted until September 2, 1945. It was the most widespread and deadliest war in history involving over 30 countries and resulting in about 50 million deaths. The initial fight was broken up by a third party. A few moments later, the accused, Mr. Buzizi, who saw the initial assault from afar, intervened and pushed the victim (Casey). The objective requirement needed to prove provocation and reduce the conviction to manslaughter was not apparent in the case, as a reasonable or ordinary person would likely have left the area, either by not intervening in the altercation in the first place or by deciding to leave once the victim had dropped his knife. The subjective requirement needed to prove provocation was not met either, as Buzizi s recollection of the events suggested that he had full awareness of his actions. Also, although he had pent up emotions, when the victim dropped his knife, once again, there was an obvious opportunity for Buzizi to think for a moment and make the decision to get away. This would have mitigated the feelings of fear Buzizi stated he had felt, and it would not have come at the cost of a life. However, Buzizi instead made the conscious decision to stab the victim multiple times, ending his life. Since the appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada was actually accepted, this spells out a need for the Criminal Code to clarify some of the ambiguities with respect to provocation. For instance, in Section 232 (2) where it states that an ordinary person is deprived of self control, it may be wise to specify the level of proportionality required between the lack of self control and the degree of the wrongfulness of the provoking act. If the criminal law allows the threat of an exacto knife to justify stabbing the holder of that exacto knife multiple times when their guard is down, then soon the criminal law may allow future actions that are even more disproportionate to the circumstances to go relatively ...
