How Does Edward Wilson Use Satire In The Future Of Life
Satirical Analysis Edward O. Wilson s The Future of Life uses satire to show the two opinions of two
different sides of the idea of environmentalism. On one side, the People First Critic accuses the
environmentalists as being out of control in their efforts to make the world a better place by helping
the environment. However, the Environmentalist criticises the opposing critic as not caring enough
about the environment and that supposedly makes him wrong. These are both two different sides to
the same argument and both are out to prove a point. The People First critic is clearly not an
environmentalist. While he specifically addresses that the environment is important, he also counters
with conservation should be kept in perspective .

The Food Areas Of The United States Essay
As the population increases and urbanization continues to develop and become more popular, an
important, life sustaining product is left behind. Most relevant in western civilization, the scarcity of
locally grown and produced food is a problem that exists, whether people realize it or not. Per the
Food Access Research Atlas, provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, there are 8,959
food deserts in the united states as of 2010 ¹. An Urban Food desert is any location deprived of
supermarkets and other access to fresh fruits and vegetables, which usually plagues places of lower
socioeconomic status. The low demand for food is attributed to lack of affordability and education,
and perceptibly retailers ought not bring their business to places with very little demand for the
product. If these deserts are ever to be omitted from the world, it is not enough to hope for the
eventual emergence of supermarkets or farms, communities must work together to improve their range
of reachable sustenance. It is every person s duty, as a member of humanity, to aid in fixing the
problem and ultimately improving the world, which gives way to defining the common good approach
to ethical reasoning. Using the common good approach, a simple, yet collectively beneficial solution
is the emergence of local gardens/greenhouses, which would largely combat the detrimental dining
options of an urban food desert. If the movement to a more horticultural lifestyle is ever to work, first,

Who Is Iago A Villain
The character Iago is portrayed as the villain in this play. He is sometimes funny, but his foolishness
especially with Roderigo shows how manipulative he can be. Iago is also seen as deceiving and not
someone that can be trusted. Iago plans to plot revenge against Othello because he was not chosen as a
lieutenant. He tells Roderigo that his anger comes from Othello giving the promotion to Cassio, who
has no military experience, instead of him. Iago later reveals his true hatred toward Othello in (1.3.323
329) by stating that, I hate the Moor, And it is thought abroad that twixt my sheets. He s done my
office. I know not if t be true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, Will do as is for surety . This

Othello likes Cassio, but believes when Iago tells him that Cassio is having an affair with Desdemona.
The proof that Iago provides in (3.3.365) he plants a handkerchief in Cassio s room that he gets Emilia
to steal in (3.3). Iago s manipulative comes about when we find out the whole time while he was
plotting against Othello, he was using Roderigo as well. The whole time Roderigo is thinking that
Iago is helping him to be with Desdemona, but Roderigo finds out in (1) that Othello and Desdemona
had gotten married. When Roderigo discovers that he is being used, Iago stabs him in (5). When
Emilia enters the scene with the news that Roderigo is dead, Othello tells Emilia that he has killed his
wife because of what Iago has told her that his wife was unfaithful. Emilia then realizes the doing that
Iago is doing and decides to tell the secrets that Iago has been keeping. Othello is crushed and tries to
kill Iago, but cannot. Instead Iago kills his wife in (5.2) and runs. Othello finds out that everything that
Iago has told him was not true. Even though he has failed to kill Iago, he felt so much pain and regret
for killing his wife, so he ends up killing himself. We also learn that Iago actions are terrifying
because he was willing to take revenge on anyone and still enjoy the trouble and pain that he is
caused. At the end of the story Iago s fate is determined by Cassio. Iago was

Summary Of Fahrenheit 451
It was a red stained brick house. An old house with steps in the front, a door on the side, and a rather
large white window in the front of the house. Some days, you can hear pieces of Bach, Chopin,
Mozart, and Beethoven playing softly.
Inside the house, it was quite empty. Pure white walls, dark stained wood flooring, and black furniture.
The staircases were wooden and well worn, complementing the intricacies of the shade around the
house. Two men walk into the house.
One of the men was Guy Montag, who nearly a year ago was a fugitive. He had the ironic occupation
of being a fireman that led to his demise. A mixture of guilt, grief, and disgust led him to become a
rebel , and under the forcible guiding of his conscience and Granger, ... Show more content on

She rushes towards him, Faber! Are you okay? Montag looks over at the old man, who has helped him
greatly in the past. It was his turn to help him. Montag jerks away from Clarisse, walking Faber inside
the small sanctuary. He casts a small glance behind him to Clarisse standing like a statue. Come on,
little girl. She looks at him with a smirk, running towards him. Montag gives her a surprised look, just
a minute ago she was all hesitant.
I m not a little girl Montag, I m 18, she says seriously.
Montag casts her a small smile, looking towards Faber, and begins to walk faster. Soon, they arrive at
the infirmary, only to see Granger. Granger gives the two newcomers a strange look.
Who are they?
This is Clarisse and Faber, I knew them before the bombing.
L l l l Montag lays Faber down on a makeshift hospital bed and starts tending to his wounds. Clarisse
sat down on a chair next to the bed, peering over at Montag, Faber, and Granger, occasionally.
Eventually, Montag finished patching Faber up. He looked like a half wrapped mummy. White
bandages trail up his fragile, old arms and his torso. Faber slowly falls asleep on the bed, a small book
falling out of his jacket pocket, the Holy Bible. Same Faber as always, muttered Montag, glancing
towards Clarisse, who sat there staring into space. You re still here? Montag looks at her.
Yeah. She sits there, fiddling with the corners of her white dress.

Explain The Four Phases Of Business Cycle
Understanding business cycles is the essence of a course in macroeconomics. The term business cycle
is an economy cycle also known as trade cycle which refers to aggregate production. It refers the
periodic but irregular upward and downward activity over several months or years in the market
economy. In another word we can say that A business cycle occurs due to the fluctuations that an
economy experiences over time resulting from changes in economic growth. A business cycle is
typically characterized by four phases Expansion or prosperity, recession, depression and recovery
that repeat themselves over time.

Throughout the book the conch develops as motif and it keeps reoccuring because it has symbolic
meaning to it. The conch symbolizes order, civilization and voice. Piggy and Ralph found the conch at

order and rules because of the meaning the boys give it, the conch is just a random shell but they value
it which makes it important. The conch is extremely important to Piggy because it makes him feel like

The Physical Portrayals Of Hispanic Women In The Media
The physical portrayal of Hispanic women in the media has a large influence on the Hispanic women
and girls that view these portrayals. The media s physical portrayal of Hispanic women is that they are
voluptuous, dark haired, tanned skin, and petite. There are many films, TV shows, and any other
media outlets that portray Hispanic women as such. Examples of these portrayals are Modern Family,
Maid in Manhattan, and Girl in Progress. In each of these movies or shows, the main character
appears as the stereotypical Hispanic woman. This is what many Hispanic women and girls believe
that the world sees them as. They also believe that this is how they should look. This especially affects
adolescent girls that identify as Hispanic. media use may play a role in the body image development
of Latina adolescents (Schooler, 2008, p. 134). Most of the time when watching television, Latinas see
a white woman and their beauty standards. The difference between white women in the media as
opposed to Latin women is that there is a greater variety of how white women in the U.S. look. When
a Latina finally sees someone who is Latina, they expect to see themselves, instead, they see Eva
Mendes, long wavy hair, curvy, and petite. When young Latin women see this, they expect themselves
to be the same way. If they don t look like that, it can result in a spoiled body image of themselves.
Latina women in this sample tended to hold the lowest perceptions of their bodies, the highest
awareness of Consumerism as a factor in the body/beauty standard, and scored high in racial
identification (Poran, 2002, p. 79) Latin women understand who they are and when someone is of the
same background. Many are also self conscious about their bodies, and that is likely due to the fact
that not only are actresses on TV shows thin and curvy, but many commercials are about the newest
way to lose weight rapidly, or what to buy to get curves. All women of any race have issues with body
Image, but as a Latina, the media plays a big role in how Latinas form their body image.
According to the media s portrayal of Latin women, there are two ways Latin women act. The first
way is passive, pure, and dependent on men; the second way is wild,

The employee s computer may also contain valuable information that can be extracted about the
downloading of the information. All of these avenues will provide a chain of auditable evidence
against the employee in question and could result in his dismissal as well as other civil legal action.
The third scenario involves the theft of a laptop computer. On October 31, 2012 there was a security
breach reported by NASA that a laptop computer was stolen from an employee s vehicle that
contained personal data on ten thousand users and was unencrypted. NASA immediately began
working with local law enforcement after the laptop was stolen, with the goal of recovering the
computer and protecting the sensitive data (Vijayan, 2012).
Information provided by IT Security about the serial number of the laptop and other identifying
features should have been well documented before the laptop ever left the NASA facility. Computer
forensics personal also would have had to investigate the people who will be affected by the
information on the stolen laptop so they can be informed and take appropriate action to protect their
identities. If the laptop is ever retrieved, computer forensics personal will need to investigate to see if
any sensitive information was accessed while the computer was missing and what information was
copied or changed.

Using the information gathered, we make brochures, posters and other marketing materials that
describe the fundraising, services, donation opportunities, and values of our organization. Then we
develop a social media marketing strategy. Social media such as Twitter and Facebook provide us with
ways to reach out to those interested in our organization in a low cost and effective way. We also have
our own radio show that has weekly discussions on the topic.
We find that the media works great when it comes to reaching those who are passionate about what we
do. Our professional website also attracts people .We use our web site as a great resource to display

The Debate Regarding the Use of Native American Mascots...
Teams in every sport, at every level of competition, have a mascot. It is the mascot that represents the
competitive spirit and team identity, motivating players and fans alike. Does the symbol chosen as a
mascot have any impact on whether a team wins or loses? Unlikely. But the choice of a Native
American mascot continues to ignite debate and controversy among athletes, fans and alumni, as well
as those people who might otherwise be disinterested in sports. Why all the controversy? The dispute
over whether Native American mascots should be used as a team symbol dates back to the 1970 s
(Price 2). There are those who are passionately against Native American mascots. These advocators
insist that Native American mascots are degrading to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, it seems odd to suggest that naming a team after an Indian tribe is a calculated insult. A team or
school embraces a mascot that represents the favorable traits and characteristics of its members. Such
is the case with the Florida State Seminoles, who are named after a tribe with its origin in that
southern state. The Seminole tribe optimistically favored the use of the Indian mascot and even
facilitated the design of authentic dress that is proudly worn at sporting and community events.
Similar to the Seminoles, the University of Illinois preserved their mascot, Chief Illiniwek, for almost
80 years. Named after the indigenous Illiniwek tribe, the Chief was a customary sideline figure at
football and basketball games until 2007 when the NCAA forced the University of Illinois to remove
this historic mascot. Unfortunately, the collegiate governing body failed to realize what this symbol
meant to the collegiate Illinois community. Illini students were polled regarding the action and a
majority disapproved of the decision. Sixty nine percent of the students voted to keep Chief Illiniwek
as their mascot. (Haugh). These students believed that removing Chief Illiniwek as the University of
Illinois mascot would diminish the passion associated with their university. After the forceful removal
of the Native American mascot by the NCAA, the students felt

Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead Analysis
In Tom Stoppard s play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, we see Ros and Guil adventure
through their confused yet contented lives as events occur around them that seal their fate. In
hindsight, their presence and lives seem rather pointless. The Tragedy of Hamlet could have
functioned fine without them, so why are they there and why are they not a single character? Most
readers could interpret that they each embody some concept. This literature review will attempt to
investigate the symbolism of the story and how other authors perceive it. When analyzing these
characters, one cannot help but wonder what Shakespeare had in mind for them. American Historian,
Preserved Smith, delves into a few of Shakespeare s influences.
He and many contemporaries matriculated at Wittenberg. Shakespeare then may have chosen
Wittenberg simply on account of its fame. It is interesting to note, however, that Hamlet s Wittenberg
friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, may actually have been drawn from the life, as there were men
of this name at the university. A Holger Rosencrantz who studied at Wittenberg in the years 1592 95
was later attached to the Danish embassy in London. A Frederick Rosencrantz, son of another Holger
Rosencrantz and of Karen Gyldenstjerne, matriculated in December, 1586.5 There was also a Gabriel

Pawn Sacrifice Film Analysis
The season of biopic is upon us as Pawn Sacrifice is the third film in past two weeks that has
concentrated on a real life story. Pawn Sacrifice is a movie about the real life story of Bobby Fischer
and his rise from a child prodigy to a chess legend. Tobey Maguire is an unconventional casting as
Fischer but grows onto the audience as he delivers one of his strongest performance. Maguire is
riveting in portraying the ever abrasive and prejudicial Fischer. Fischer is unquestionably a genius but
a very difficult person to like and get along with, which Maguire gets across brilliantly. The movie is
set during Cold War era presents a fine view of the link between the genius of Fischer and his mental
illness.
Pawn Sacrifice opens with the most unflattering shot of Fischer as he tears through his room trying to

frustrated by the movie as Zwick sets up the movie beautifully but fails to deliver on the endgame and
does not go for the kill. The movie is partly about Fischer and fails to identify itself. Pawn Sacrifice is
neither a Chess movie neither a biopic nor a documentary. Sadly it turns out to be a one dimensional
dramatization aimed at appeasing all. However the movie does a wonderful job in showcasing that

Texas Supreme Court Case Analysis
Texas consists of three branches of government; the executive, legislative, and judicial branch. Texas
government is modeled very similarly to The United States three branches. Specifically within the
judicial branch, there is a Supreme Court, which is the highest federal court of The United States
[National]. There is also a Supreme Court in Texas; which is the highest court in the state. A 5 4
decision by The United States Supreme Court on June 26th, 2015 ended all state bans on same sex
marriage and requires all fifty states to recognize marriages legally performed in other states.
Immediately after this historic decision was made, in disobedience of the Supreme Court, Texas
attorney general said, that county clerks can refuse to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples if
they object on religious grounds. This was Texas initial reaction to the ruling. Former Texas Gov. Rick
Perry, a presidential contender, said he was disappointed with the ruling and as president, I would

Power In A Tale Of Two Cities
Power is the Silent Assassin Charles Dickens, a prosperous author by the age of twenty five, was born
in Portsmouth, England, on February 7, 1812. A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens in
1859, is considered to be one of the darkest of the major books that he wrote. The novel is considered
dark because its takes place in England and France before and throughout the French Revolution. The
French Revolution was a ten year revolt of the peasants against the nobles that resulted in the deaths
of tens of thousands of people. In Dickens A Tale of Two Cities, imagery is used to change the reader s

The peasants have changed the laws since the French Revolution started, which is very hypocritical
considering one of the reasons for the war was to fight for justice against the nobles unjust court
system, and now they are doing the exact same thing to the nobles, even the innocent ones, for
revenge. An officer immediately jails Charles Darnay, an honorable man, into solitary confinement in
a prison named La Force because he is accused of being an emigrant. When the officer asserts,
Without doubt. You are consigned, Evremonde, to the prison of La Force (195), Darnay exclaims,
Under what law, and for what offence? showing the unexpectedness of his imprisonment. In this
novel, emigrants are nobles who have fled from their homes, and though Darnay denounced his family
name years before, he belongs to the Evremonde family, and therefore, must die. During the French
Revolution, the peasants commonly made vulgar jokes about the Guillotine, which was a new weapon
used to behead its victims. They laughed about the weapon and how they killed many people with it,
saying, it was the best cure for headache (212). We can conclude the reader no longer supports the

The And Justice For All
With liberty and justice for all . These are the 6 words that conclude the pledge of allegiance of our
United States. This is what our nation was built upon: liberty and justice. Justice is the just behavior
(insert dictionary source here) or treatment that one may receive or give. To be just is to be fair and
righteous and this righteousness is the quality of being morally right (insert dictionary source here).
For someone to be shot in cold blood and the killer not have any consequence goes against all
morality. As an adult we have the cognitive ability to decipher between right and wrong or good and
bad behavior and know that if we violate these expectations we need to be held accountable for our
actions. Social Justice is fairness within a society. Fairness with in a society or community is making
sure everything is equal within that given society or community. Distribution of wealth is really
important. The top 10% of the community can t have more money than the bottom 90% combined.
There has to be fairness in opportunity that is provided within the community. If one given population
is allowed to partake in something or are given the opportunity to better their lives than all the other
given populations need to have that same fair opportunity as well. The same goes for privilege. It s not
fair when there are special rights and advantages given out that will help a particular group but

Resistance Art And Resistance In Art
An artist, can and has represented what he or she sees then produces it on a material, which allows the
audience see a different point of view to see the world. A piece of art can allow the viewers to have an
emotional feeling, which has allowed life to imitate art because that feeling they have discovered can
or have stuck with them and changed their perception on how to act upon on an action. Art is neither
one of reflection of social change or an impetus, it is both. Art is neither just one, it engages each
person in a rather different way. Art work has created such emotions to some people that it has created
resistance and revolution throughout the years. Resistance in art was starting to be found in the mid
1970 s. It is a form of art that emerged in South Africa in the mid 1970 s after the Soweto uprising that

Innovation In Transport Industry Essay
Innovation in Transport Industry
Introduction
After Singapore independence, Singapore s bus service was provided by numerous small operators
and was highly split with both service and safety standards were low. The aggressive competition by
the private bus companies led to poor service, lack of incorporation and network economies eventually
resulting in the immediate bankruptcy of many of these companies. The government moved in a team
of civil servants, take over the fragmented companies and put together a tight outfit, making
reasonable profits. The new entity, SBS Transit, was eventually nationalized.

Since 1987, managing the three way tensions of ensuring profitability and acceptable quality had been
the job of the Public Transport Council (PTC), which regulates transport fares for both buses and

the PTC implements a cap on annual fare adjustments which is based on the formula.

In 1996, Singapore Government revealed one of its most aspiring and extensive plans for the
Singapore s land transport system. It contained details step the authorities to follow to achieve its

existing schemes was proposed like revision of taxi fares. New schemes were introduced as well such
as Electronic Road Pricing (ERP), which eventually become omnipresent in Singapore. But among all
these implementation, the heart of the blueprint was that 75 Percent of all day to day trips in Singapore
would be made by public transport. In order to achieve this goal, improvements to public transport
were critical. The White Paper said that the government would enhance public transport, encouraging
more Singaporeans to switch from cars to train and bus, and easing traffic congestion. It would also

Analysis Of The Pink Car By Mark Halliday
Different Perspectives
In recent generations, typical looks or ideas have dominated fashion. People write about this topic
through articles, newspapers, and papers. While models style and display the most recent styles, they
also represent what women should look like. Not until very recently, people have realized that not all
women look like models, unless they starved themselves or worse. In the poems, Fat is Not a Fairy
Tale and The Pink Car , the authors convey their main message of the poem as the social aspect of the
world and what they believe has the characteristics of the ideal person by using imagery and
personification. Admiration for individuality, a common theme throughout The Pink Car , was
constantly mentioned through the words of the Mark Halliday. Furthermore, Halliday personifies the
cars in the poem as people; specifically focusing in on the pink car. He repeatedly describes the other
cars in a jaundiced way; for example, he would characterize these cars as boisterous, rowdy, and big.
However, he identifies the pink car as disparate, one who does not worry or care about other cars
perspectives. The author wrote, Other cars might honk their horns to seem big // the pink car doesn t
honk and doesn t worry (Halliday 25 26). Halliday symbolizes the car as pink because society
commonly construes the color as feminist, sweet, playful, the color of love, flowers and romance. His
intention of this poem was to help one find peace within themselves.

Essay on The Fate of the True Woman in The Blithedale...
The Fate of the True Woman in The Blithedale Romance
The female characters in Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Blithedale Romance, Zenobia and Priscilla,
differ in their representations of womanhood. Zenobia begins as an independent character, whom later
surrenders to Hollingsworth s control, whereas Priscilla is ever submissive to his desires. This
determines how the male characters, Coverdale and Hollingsworth, view both women. Coverdale and
Hollingsworth are first enamored by Zenobia s charm, but both fall for Priscilla s docility. Zenobia
represents female independence and Priscilla embodies feminine subservience; the triumph of Priscilla

Coverdale describes her as being like a flower shrub that had done its best to blossom in too scanty
light (Hawthorne 27). The only time she appears truly aroused is when she hears Zenobia and
Coverdale discussing the idea of women in power, and distraught, asserts she cannot think this is true
and does not wish it so (Hawthorne 122). Priscilla is only agitated by one concept the destruction of
the True Woman.
In the beginning, both Hollingsworth and Coverdale are enamored by Zenobia Hollingsworth by her
wealth and Coverdale by her beauty. It is apparent that wealth is Hollingsworth s true attraction to
Zenobia since the realization that she is not rich is what drives them apart. She says to him, I was
willing to realize your dream . . . though it should prove the ruin of my fortune; however, when she
has no fortune to ruin he no longer wants her (Hawthorne 217).
Coverdale claims that he is attracted to Zenobia s intelligence and independence. When she relates her
plans to lecture on behalf of women s rights, he thinks it surely behoved [sic] Zenobia to be the
champion of her sex (Hawthorne 123). It seems, however, that he is mostly attracted to her physical
charms. He alludes to her beauty often, and even ventures to say that something in her manner,
irresistibly brought up a picture of that fine, perfectly developed figure in Eve s earliest garment
(Hawthorne 17). Such allusions, combined with his later betrayal, indicate that his attraction is

Essay on The Stakeholder Theory by Thomas Donaldson
A stake holder, in general is defined as an individual or organization likely affected by the
performance of an organization. In The stakeholder theory of the corporation: Concepts, evidence, and
implications by Thomas Donaldson , he quotes Stanford research institution and calls stake holders
those groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist.
Therefore a stakeholder can be thought of as some who both influences and is influenced by an
organization. According to Greasley (1999, p9) there are 3 types of stake holders: internal, connected
and external.
Internal stakeholders are described as the managers and employees of a company. Connected

However, for this scenario it will be assumed that the stakeholder concept stands, and hence will
assume the stakeholder concept is infallible.
It will be assumed that the large mining company is publicly owned and is situated a more
economically developed country (MEDC). Therefore the company will have significantly weaker
influence from the government than a government owned company. It will also imply that trade
unions associated with the company will likely be strong, hence workers will have higher influence
than they would in a less economically developed country (LEDC) where unions would be weaker .
The above assumptions will also help in identifying stakeholders within the mining company;
stakeholders will be divided up into the 3 defined in Greasley (1999, p9).
Firstly, internal stakeholders, those connected directly to the firm. This group include will account for
anyone working within the firm. In the context of the mining company, this includes people like
miners, even jobs like those of a janitor in the building. However, it is important to note that it also
involves much more powerful stakeholders like senior management, who play a large role in the
decisions made by the company.
Connected stakeholders, will include groups like shareholders, customers and suppliers

Vaccine Effectiveness Of The Shingles Vaccine Essay
The shingles vaccine has been available in the United States since 2006 and is an effective method in
preventing individuals, especially those aged 60 years or older, from developing a herpes zoster
infection1. However, even though immunization is a relatively easy prevention method, many older
adults are not receiving the shingles vaccine. Though some individuals may choose to not be
vaccinated for personal or religious reasons, other barriers do exist. Limited physician education of the
national recommendations and vaccine effectiveness has resulted in less than 25% of eligible older
adults receiving the herpes zoster vaccine as of 20152. Lack of proper storage capabilities has also
limited many clinics from carrying the vaccine. The shingles vaccine must be stored frozen and
administered within thirty minutes, which is not always feasible for primary care or community based
clinics3. Luckily, public health professionals have been focusing on shingles vaccination among older
adults and some interventions have emerged with the goal to increase its uptake. One intervention
strategy in particular aims to improve immunization rates by addressing lack of education and support.
This program team utilized a team approach combined with educational opportunities, focusing
specifically on primary care settings4. Gannon, et. al. (2012) explored this team approach in their
study involving 17 primary care practices who were recruited from the ACP quality and practice

Justification And Justification Of The Penal System
Punishment in general can obviously be justified (in the traditional sense of the term) on utilitarian
grounds. Nevertheless, usually its justification is not asked for. Because justification of punishment, in
general is unnecessary. It is the justification of particular infliction of pain (or punishment) that can be
enquired of. As a man can legitimately ask for justification of a particular law of a state. However,
nobody enquires of the justification of legal system or of law in general. It is meaningful to ask, Can
this rule be justified? Or Are not those laws justifiable? But it is not worthwhile rather it is absurd to
ask, Can law (in general) be justified? Similarly, punishment in general or penal system requires no ...

Retribution assigns a punishment that is appropriate to the crime, which is ideal in punishing criminals
whereas general deterrence works to persuade society to obey the law, and specific deterrence work.
From the variety of utilitarian justifications of punishment, retribution is the most convincing as its
theoretical goals are sustained through societies, whereas general and specific deterrence cannot be
justified on their own, as they do not match with retribution.
For retributionists, punishment is backward looking, justified by the crime that has been committed
and carried out to atone for the damage already done. Retributivism covers all theories that justify
punishment because the offender deserves it. This is interpreted in two ways, either a person must be
punished because they deserve it (deserving is a sufficient reason for punishment), or a person must
not be punished unless they deserve it (deserving is a necessary but not sufficient condition for
punishment). There are two distinct types of retributive justice. The classical definition embraces the
idea that the amount of punishment must be proportionate to the amount of harm caused by the
offence. Many strands of retrivbutism including Lex Talionis which seeks to restore the balance
between offender and victim. The third is in accordance with the grievance principle; that

Turing, Searle, and Artificial Intelligence
The conditions of the present scenario are as follows: a machine, Siri*, capable of passing the Turing
test, is being insulted by a 10 year old boy, whose mother is questioning the appropriateness of
punishing him for his behavior. We cannot answer the mother s question without speculating as to
what A.M. Turing and John Searle, two 20th century philosophers whose views on artificial
intelligence are starkly contrasting, would say about this predicament. Furthermore, we must provide
fair and balanced consideration for both theorists viewpoints because, ultimately, neither side can be
correct in this scenario. But before we compare hypothetical opinions, we must establish operant
definitions for all parties involved. The characters in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The answer is no because we cannot accurately determine, from the given information, whether Siri*
understands what she is saying on a deep, emotional level, one requirement for personhood that both
Turing and Searle deem necessary (Searle; Turing). We have no method of measuring Siri* s level of
understanding outside of the Turing test, which Searle rejects as an accurate measurement of linguistic
understanding. And again, he also rejects the idea that any electronic machine can possess such
understanding whatsoever, so Siri* s response is essentially meaningless. Part D: Answering to Amy
In response to Amy s initial question, it would be unwise to immediately present either Turing s or
Searle s answer as a correct response. Similarly, it would be unwise to declare a winning philosophy in
this scenario, as the correct philosophy depends on the correct judging criteria, which we lack. Clearly,
if Siri* is a person, or judged to be a person based on certain criteria, then Turing is correct in his
assessment; Amy should punish her child. If Siri* is not a person, then Searle is correct, and Amy
would not have significant reason for punishment. But in this scenario, no judgment criteria are
explicitly being applied, nor is one school of thought clearly more appropriate than the other.
Therefore, our only hope of declaring which of the two theories is correct in this scenario, thereby
correctly answering Amy s initial question, is to hypothesize judging

Essay On Corporal Punishment In Schools
Corporal Punishment in Schools
Corporal punishment is the deliberate infliction of pain as retribution for an offence, or for the purpose
of disciplining or reforming a wrongdoer, or to deter attitudes or behaviour deemed unacceptable
(Miller, Vandome, amp; McBrewster, 2009). Corporal punishment can be divided into three
categories, these include: judicial, domestic and school. For the purpose of this essay we will be
focusing on school corporal punishment, the advantages and guidelines to follow when using corporal
punishment and the disadvantages and effects on children when child abuse is used in the name of
corporal punishment.

Punishment must be administered soon after the offence. Children tend to forget the reason why they
are being punished after a long period of time has passed, making them believe that they should not be
punished. It is also best to specify the behavior being punished.
Educators must administer corporal punishment dispassionately. Teachers tend to spank or hit a child
more aggressively because they might not like the child as a person. Not to mention, teachers should
be bother when they are administering corporal punishment to any child.
Administer corporal punishment in front of appropriate witnesses, these witnesses should be regarded
as reliable and truthful in case of litigation. And, corporal punishment should be carried out with
appropriate confidentiality, because, what good would it do to humiliate the child.
And finally, make sure you follow all the rules and regulations prescribed by the school system, this is
to assure you have the support and an effective defense, should a legal challenge arise.
But with every advantage there is an equal disadvantage. Most people believe that corporal
punishment in schools is not morally acceptance. This is where the disadvantages occur. According to
Vockell (1991), punishment is not likely to be logically related to the misbehavior (p. 279). This just
means that the students who are punished for misbehavior not worthy of punishment are victims of
artificial punishment. Artificial

Dramatism Review on Revenge
The Golden Globe nominated television show Revenge, debuted in 2010. Revenge was produced and
created by Mike Kelly. The drama television series is about Emily Thorne who is really Amanda
Clarke, whose father was framed for treason when she was a little girl. After a lengthy trial, he was
imprisoned for life, and was murdered in prison by the agents who framed him. She has now returned
to the Hamptons as an adult to get revenge on those who wronged her father. Not only is Revenge
entertaining it also pushes the norm to see how far you will go for someone you love. I will dissect
this television series into five different elements act, agent(s), agency, scene, and purpose. In Revenge
the act is Emily pushing for revenge against the Grayson s. The agent is Emily Thorne (Amanda
Clarke). The agency is her background on the Grayson s, Nolan Ross, and her background in martial
arts. Nolan Ross is basically her sidekick and guardian angel. He keeps her grounded and watches her
back. He keeps her on track and points out her options. The scene is set in the Hamptons with Emily
planning her revenge against the people who wronged her father. Family, honor, duty, and love
(Amanda goal is to clear her father and she shows no bounds for which she will go to do this) are the
purpose for this show. After watching this series I believe that the dominant elements are the purpose

  • 3. How Does Edward Wilson Use Satire In The Future Of Life Satirical Analysis Edward O. Wilson s The Future of Life uses satire to show the two opinions of two different sides of the idea of environmentalism. On one side, the People First Critic accuses the environmentalists as being out of control in their efforts to make the world a better place by helping the environment. However, the Environmentalist criticises the opposing critic as not caring enough about the environment and that supposedly makes him wrong. These are both two different sides to the same argument and both are out to prove a point. The People First critic is clearly not an environmentalist. While he specifically addresses that the environment is important, he also counters with conservation should be kept in perspective . ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Food Areas Of The United States Essay As the population increases and urbanization continues to develop and become more popular, an important, life sustaining product is left behind. Most relevant in western civilization, the scarcity of locally grown and produced food is a problem that exists, whether people realize it or not. Per the Food Access Research Atlas, provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, there are 8,959 food deserts in the united states as of 2010 ¹. An Urban Food desert is any location deprived of supermarkets and other access to fresh fruits and vegetables, which usually plagues places of lower socioeconomic status. The low demand for food is attributed to lack of affordability and education, and perceptibly retailers ought not bring their business to places with very little demand for the product. If these deserts are ever to be omitted from the world, it is not enough to hope for the eventual emergence of supermarkets or farms, communities must work together to improve their range of reachable sustenance. It is every person s duty, as a member of humanity, to aid in fixing the problem and ultimately improving the world, which gives way to defining the common good approach to ethical reasoning. Using the common good approach, a simple, yet collectively beneficial solution is the emergence of local gardens/greenhouses, which would largely combat the detrimental dining options of an urban food desert. If the movement to a more horticultural lifestyle is ever to work, first, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Who Is Iago A Villain The character Iago is portrayed as the villain in this play. He is sometimes funny, but his foolishness especially with Roderigo shows how manipulative he can be. Iago is also seen as deceiving and not someone that can be trusted. Iago plans to plot revenge against Othello because he was not chosen as a lieutenant. He tells Roderigo that his anger comes from Othello giving the promotion to Cassio, who has no military experience, instead of him. Iago s manipulative comes about when we find out the whole time while he was plotting against Othello, he was using Roderigo as well. The whole time Roderigo is thinking that Iago is helping him to be with Desdemona, but Roderigo finds out in (1) that Othello and Desdemona had gotten married. When Roderigo discovers that he is being used, Iago stabs him in (5). When Emilia enters the scene with the news that Roderigo is dead, Othello tells Emilia that he has killed his wife because of what Iago has told her that his wife was unfaithful. Emilia then realizes the doing that Iago is doing and decides to tell the secrets that Iago has been keeping. Othello is crushed and tries to kill Iago, but cannot. Instead Iago kills his wife in (5.2) and runs. Othello finds out that everything that Iago has told him was not true. Even though he has failed to kill Iago, he felt so much pain and regret for killing his wife, so he ends up killing himself. • 6. Summary Of Fahrenheit 451 It was a red stained brick house. An old house with steps in the front, a door on the side, and a rather large white window in the front of the house. Some days, you can hear pieces of Bach, Chopin, Mozart, and Beethoven playing softly. Inside the house, it was quite empty. Pure white walls, dark stained wood flooring, and black furniture. The staircases were wooden and well worn, complementing the intricacies of the shade around the house. Two men walk into the house. One of the men was Guy Montag, who nearly a year ago was a fugitive. He had the ironic occupation of being a fireman that led to his demise. A mixture of guilt, grief, and disgust led him to become a rebel , and under the forcible guiding of his conscience and Granger, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She looks at him with a smirk, running towards him. Montag gives her a surprised look, just a minute ago she was all hesitant. I m not a little girl Montag, I m 18, she says seriously. Montag casts her a small smile, looking towards Faber, and begins to walk faster. Soon, they arrive at the infirmary, only to see Granger. Granger gives the two newcomers a strange look. Who are they? This is Clarisse and Faber, I knew them before the bombing. L l l l Montag lays Faber down on a makeshift hospital bed and starts tending to his wounds. Clarisse sat down on a chair next to the bed, peering over at Montag, Faber, and Granger, occasionally. Eventually, Montag finished patching Faber up. He looked like a half wrapped mummy. White bandages trail up his fragile, old arms and his torso. Faber slowly falls asleep on the bed, a small book falling out of his jacket pocket, the Holy Bible. Same Faber as always, muttered Montag, glancing towards Clarisse, who sat there staring into space. You re still here? Montag looks at her. Yeah. She sits there, fiddling with the corners of her white dress. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Physical Portrayals Of Hispanic Women In The Media The physical portrayal of Hispanic women in the media has a large influence on the Hispanic women and girls that view these portrayals. The media s physical portrayal of Hispanic women is that they are voluptuous, dark haired, tanned skin, and petite. There are many films, TV shows, and any other media outlets that portray Hispanic women as such. Examples of these portrayals are Modern Family, Maid in Manhattan, and Girl in Progress. In each of these movies or shows, the main character appears as the stereotypical Hispanic woman. This is what many Hispanic women and girls believe that the world sees them as. They also believe that this is how they should look. This especially affects adolescent girls that identify as Hispanic. media use may play a role in the body image development of Latina adolescents (Schooler, 2008, p. 134). Most of the time when watching television, Latinas see a white woman and their beauty standards. The difference between white women in the media as opposed to Latin women is that there is a greater variety of how white women in the U.S. look. When a Latina finally sees someone who is Latina, they expect to see themselves, instead, they see Eva Mendes, long wavy hair, curvy, and petite. When young Latin women see this, they expect themselves to be the same way. If they don t look like that, it can result in a spoiled body image of themselves. Latina women in this sample tended to hold the lowest perceptions of their bodies, the highest awareness of Consumerism as a factor in the body/beauty standard, and scored high in racial identification (Poran, 2002, p. 79) Latin women understand who they are and when someone is of the same background. Many are also self conscious about their bodies, and that is likely due to the fact that not only are actresses on TV shows thin and curvy, but many commercials are about the newest way to lose weight rapidly, or what to buy to get curves. All women of any race have issues with body Image, but as a Latina, the media plays a big role in how Latinas form their body image. According to the media s portrayal of Latin women, there are two ways Latin women act. The first way is passive, pure, and dependent on men; the second way is wild, ... On October 31, 2012 there was a security breach reported by NASA that a laptop computer was stolen from an employee s vehicle that contained personal data on ten thousand users and was unencrypted. NASA immediately began working with local law enforcement after the laptop was stolen, with the goal of recovering the computer and protecting the sensitive data (Vijayan, 2012). It is the mascot that represents the competitive spirit and team identity, motivating players and fans alike. Does the symbol chosen as a mascot have any impact on whether a team wins or loses? Unlikely. But the choice of a Native American mascot continues to ignite debate and controversy among athletes, fans and alumni, as well as those people who might otherwise be disinterested in sports. Why all the controversy? The dispute over whether Native American mascots should be used as a team symbol dates back to the 1970 s (Price 2). Thus, it seems odd to suggest that naming a team after an Indian tribe is a calculated insult. A team or school embraces a mascot that represents the favorable traits and characteristics of its members. Such is the case with the Florida State Seminoles, who are named after a tribe with its origin in that southern state. The Seminole tribe optimistically favored the use of the Indian mascot and even facilitated the design of authentic dress that is proudly worn at sporting and community events. Similar to the Seminoles, the University of Illinois preserved their mascot, Chief Illiniwek, for almost 80 years. Named after the indigenous Illiniwek tribe, the Chief was a customary sideline figure at football and basketball games until 2007 when the NCAA forced the University of Illinois to remove this historic mascot. Unfortunately, the collegiate governing body failed to realize what this symbol meant to the collegiate Illinois community. Illini students were polled regarding the action and a majority disapproved of the decision. Sixty nine percent of the students voted to keep Chief Illiniwek as their mascot. (Haugh). These students believed that removing Chief Illiniwek as the University of Illinois mascot would diminish the passion associated with their university. Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead Analysis In Tom Stoppard s play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, we see Ros and Guil adventure through their confused yet contented lives as events occur around them that seal their fate. In hindsight, their presence and lives seem rather pointless. The Tragedy of Hamlet could have functioned fine without them, so why are they there and why are they not a single character? Most readers could interpret that they each embody some concept. This literature review will attempt to investigate the symbolism of the story and how other authors perceive it. When analyzing these characters, one cannot help but wonder what Shakespeare had in mind for them. American Historian, Preserved Smith, delves into a few of Shakespeare s influences. He and many contemporaries matriculated at Wittenberg. Shakespeare then may have chosen Wittenberg simply on account of its fame. It is interesting to note, however, that Hamlet s Wittenberg friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, may actually have been drawn from the life, as there were men of this name at the university. A Holger Rosencrantz who studied at Wittenberg in the years 1592 95 was later attached to the Danish embassy in London. Pawn Sacrifice is a movie about the real life story of Bobby Fischer and his rise from a child prodigy to a chess legend. In the poems, Fat is Not a Fairy Tale and The Pink Car , the authors convey their main message of the poem as the social aspect of the world and what they believe has the characteristics of the ideal person by using imagery and personification. Admiration for individuality, a common theme throughout The Pink Car , was constantly mentioned through the words of the Mark Halliday. Furthermore, Halliday personifies the cars in the poem as people; specifically focusing in on the pink car. He repeatedly describes the other cars in a jaundiced way; for example, he would characterize these cars as boisterous, rowdy, and big. However, he identifies the pink car as disparate, one who does not worry or care about other cars perspectives. The author wrote, Other cars might honk their horns to seem big // the pink car doesn t honk and doesn t worry (Halliday 25 26). Vaccine Effectiveness Of The Shingles Vaccine Essay The shingles vaccine has been available in the United States since 2006 and is an effective method in preventing individuals, especially those aged 60 years or older, from developing a herpes zoster infection1. For retributionists, punishment is backward looking, justified by the crime that has been committed and carried out to atone for the damage already done. Retributivism covers all theories that justify punishment because the offender deserves it. This is interpreted in two ways, either a person must be punished because they deserve it (deserving is a sufficient reason for punishment), or a person must not be punished unless they deserve it (deserving is a necessary but not sufficient condition for punishment). • 34. Case Study On Streets Of Future Streets of Future: A Case Study Of Delhi Cities today are constantly escalating in terms of number and size. As India is moving on the path of rapid and massive urbanisation, urban centres are also growing at a faster pace. Census 2011, positioned level of urbanization at 31.1% with number of urban residents at 377 million spread over more than 7500 urban settlements. The spatial growth of Delhi indicates tremendous rise in settlements. While the total population growth from 2001 to 2011 is 21%, urban population is 27% indicating that Delhi has been urbanising faster than its growth in past decades. Although, master plans are made for proper functioning of cities, but very little attention is paid to street design, which is the basic unit of cities and urbanscapes. It is important to address the design, street ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Special care should be taken to improve the mobility of impaired and disabled. The street design should be focused on pedestrian environment. The approach to street design should be multi disciplinary. Provision of transition areas from roads to streets should be provided. Transition zones should be treated by using large trees, narrowing of carriageways and change in surface materials. Aspect of legibility should be focused for clear perception of routes by the people. Features and landmarks which are aesthetically and historically recognised are valued by the people. • 35. Turing, Searle, and Artificial Intelligence The conditions of the present scenario are as follows: a machine, Siri*, capable of passing the Turing test, is being insulted by a 10 year old boy, whose mother is questioning the appropriateness of punishing him for his behavior. We cannot answer the mother s question without speculating as to what A.M. Turing and John Searle, two 20th century philosophers whose views on artificial intelligence are starkly contrasting, would say about this predicament. Furthermore, we must provide fair and balanced consideration for both theorists viewpoints because, ultimately, neither side can be correct in this scenario. But before we compare hypothetical opinions, we must establish operant definitions for all parties involved. The characters in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The answer is no because we cannot accurately determine, from the given information, whether Siri* understands what she is saying on a deep, emotional level, one requirement for personhood that both Turing and Searle deem necessary (Searle; Turing). We have no method of measuring Siri* s level of understanding outside of the Turing test, which Searle rejects as an accurate measurement of linguistic understanding. And again, he also rejects the idea that any electronic machine can possess such understanding whatsoever, so Siri* s response is essentially meaningless. Part D: Answering to Amy In response to Amy s initial question, it would be unwise to immediately present either Turing s or Searle s answer as a correct response. Similarly, it would be unwise to declare a winning philosophy in this scenario, as the correct philosophy depends on the correct judging criteria, which we lack. Clearly, if Siri* is a person, or judged to be a person based on certain criteria, then Turing is correct in his assessment; Amy should punish her child. If Siri* is not a person, then Searle is correct, and Amy would not have significant reason for punishment. But in this scenario, no judgment criteria are explicitly being applied, nor is one school of thought clearly more appropriate than the other. Therefore, our only hope of declaring which of the two theories is correct in this scenario, thereby correctly answering Amy s initial question, is to hypothesize judging ... • 36. Improving Eyewitness Weber, N., Perfect, T. J. (2012). Improving Eyewitness Identification Accuracy by Screening Out Those Who Say They Don t Know. Law and Human Behavior, 36(1), 28 36. In the article Improving Eyewitness Identification Accuracy by Screening out Those Who Say They Don t Know, the authors main issue was the lack of information, from previous studies, about the improved accuracy that is possible when allowing eyewitnesses to withhold responses about which they are unsure of by responding don t know. The purpose of this study was to provide evidence that screening out those who say don t know as a response in identifying a suspect will further lead to improved accuracy, because the eyewitness has the option to opt out of reporting a response ... The video was shot at an angle in which students where witnesses to the crime and they were approaching the car. It had a clear view of the offender. In the clip the witness alerted the offender that they were present by shouting which resulted in the offender fleeing. The second video clip was a 3 minute unrelated filler clip in which included numerous individuals that could have possibly hindered the participants in accurately identifying the offender. Once viewing both clips participants where then put in one of two retention intervals 3 minutes or 3 weeks to identify the offender. Retention intervals where used to further replicate real life situations and to see how time plays a role in memory accuracy. Upon the completion of time intervals either 3 minutes or 3 weeks participants were shown one of two photographs. One was of the actual offender and the other photograph was of a filler who matched the description of the offender. Both pictures only showed individuals head and shoulders. Participants were given general information informing them that the person in the photograph may or may not have been the car theft individual. • 37. Essay On Corporal Punishment In Schools Corporal Punishment in Schools Corporal punishment is the deliberate infliction of pain as retribution for an offence, or for the purpose of disciplining or reforming a wrongdoer, or to deter attitudes or behaviour deemed unacceptable (Miller, Vandome, amp; McBrewster, 2009). Corporal punishment can be divided into three categories, these include: judicial, domestic and school. For the purpose of this essay we will be focusing on school corporal punishment, the advantages and guidelines to follow when using corporal punishment and the disadvantages and effects on children when child abuse is used in the name of corporal punishment. According to Vockell (1991), Corporal punishment is the infliction of physical pain, contingent upon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Punishment must be administered soon after the offence. Children tend to forget the reason why they are being punished after a long period of time has passed, making them believe that they should not be punished. It is also best to specify the behavior being punished. Educators must administer corporal punishment dispassionately. Teachers tend to spank or hit a child more aggressively because they might not like the child as a person. Not to mention, teachers should be bother when they are administering corporal punishment to any child. Administer corporal punishment in front of appropriate witnesses, these witnesses should be regarded as reliable and truthful in case of litigation. And, corporal punishment should be carried out with appropriate confidentiality, because, what good would it do to humiliate the child. And finally, make sure you follow all the rules and regulations prescribed by the school system, this is to assure you have the support and an effective defense, should a legal challenge arise. But with every advantage there is an equal disadvantage. Most people believe that corporal punishment in schools is not morally acceptance. This is where the disadvantages occur. According to Vockell (1991), punishment is not likely to be logically related to the misbehavior (p. 279). This just means that the students who are punished for misbehavior not worthy of punishment are victims of artificial punishment. Artificial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Multiple Life Lessons In The Princess Bride By William... In the novel The Princess Bride there are many lessons that are to be learned as there are in many other fairy tales. The authors, such as William Goldman, put these lessons in the book so the readers can learn them and become better people. William Goldman s novel The Princess Bride shows multiple life lessons that Nifty Lance covers in his writing about in 11 Content Lessons I Learned From The Princess Bride. There are five lessons from his eleven that I have found most applicable in life. A very powerful life lesson that appeared in Nifty Lance s writing was just the fact about being yourself. Going up the Cliffs could hardly be done, she thought (Goldman 109). But Fezzik and Westley were able to prove multiple people wrong about how impossible it was to climb the Cliffs, but Fezzik was even able to climb the Cliffs while he was carrying three people. The Spaniard lifted Buttercup and draped her body around the Turk s shoulders. Then he tied himself to the Turk s waist. Then the Sicilian hopped, clung to the Turks necks. (Goldman 112). Westley was capable of crossing the Fire Swamp with Buttercup to escape along with him climbing The Cliffs of Insanity. Comparable to The Cliffs of Insanity no one has ever been able to cross the Fire Swamp either. In fact the Fire Swamp was used to threaten children if they misbehaved, such as Do that one more time, you re going to the Fire Swamp. • 39. Dramatism Review on Revenge Dramatism Review on Revenge The Golden Globe nominated television show Revenge, debuted in 2010. Revenge was produced and created by Mike Kelly. The drama television series is about Emily Thorne who is really Amanda Clarke, whose father was framed for treason when she was a little girl. After a lengthy trial, he was imprisoned for life, and was murdered in prison by the agents who framed him. She has now returned to the Hamptons as an adult to get revenge on those who wronged her father. Not only is Revenge entertaining it also pushes the norm to see how far you will go for someone you love. I will dissect this television series into five different elements act, agent(s), agency, scene, and purpose. In Revenge the act is Emily pushing for revenge against the Grayson s. The agent is Emily Thorne (Amanda Clarke). The agency is her background on the Grayson s, Nolan Ross, and her background in martial arts. Nolan Ross is basically her sidekick and guardian angel. He keeps her grounded and watches her back. He keeps her on track and points out her options. The scene is set in the Hamptons with Emily planning her revenge against the people who wronged her father. Family, honor, duty, and love (Amanda goal is to clear her father and she shows no bounds for which she will go to do this) are the purpose for this show. After watching this series I believe that the dominant elements are the purpose and agent. Without the purpose of her trying to clear her father s name the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
