Persky s Criticism
The judge faced criticism from the public for his decision to sentence Turner to jail for only six
months. Rather than face continuous criticism, it would be in Persky s best interest to step down from
his position as a judge. In A Judge s Recall Is Warranted for an Indecent Sentence William G. Otis of
Georgetown University Law Center mentions that regardless of how earnest and well founded a
sentence is, if the public disagrees, the judge s removal is warranted. The reason why Judge Persky
faces such criticism is because as a result of his choices, he ignored Turner s victim s sense of security
and safety. The emotional and mental scars of the victim could not be eased because [t]here is a

Richard Scrushy Case
From ethical and legal perspectives, what do you feel business has learned from the Scrushy situation?
Richard Scrushy defrauded, stakeholders, stockholders, and the community out of millions of dollars.
His deceptive, unethical, and commanding behavior was the stone that caused the biggest
misappropriation avalanche of all time. We must consider this question, how is corporate cheating
happening and who is heading the deception? Behind every crime, there is a ringleader or a group of
individuals calling the shots. In this case, Scrushy was the one who told his family meeting members
to fix financial records, so HealthSouth to meet or exceed the business financial goals. A person from
the beginning may have the objective to cheat; others get sucked into the whirlpool of white collar
crime.
Corporate fraud is rampant, and it is becoming a part of our culture. We expect to hear about some
cheating or embezzlement within the financial world. That should not be the case. However, one
would think that after Tyco, Enron, WorldCom, and more recently VW, that business had learned that
cooking the books or in the case of VW (lie to emission regulators) does not get you a gold medal in
the end.
Arel, Beaudoin, Cianci, (2011) argue that executive ethical leadership and an high quality internal
audit function, can positively guide accounting managers making decisions involving uncertainties.
In the case of HealthSouth, the lack of morality and integrity diverted

The Arguments Of Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide
The pro for euthanasia is hereafter, the right of a competent, terminally ill person to avoid the
unnecessary pain and embrace a short but meaningful life. Both active euthanasia and assisted suicide
are illegal under English law.
Depending on the circumstances, euthanasia is regarded as either manslaughter or murder and is
punishable by law, with a maximum penalty of up to life imprisonment.
Assisted suicide is illegal under the terms of the Suicide Act (1961) and is punishable by up to 14
years imprisonment. Attempting to kill yourself is not a criminal act in itself. Euthanasia can be
classified in different ways, including: active euthanasia where a person deliberately intervenes to end

Hamlet Examples Of Revenge
From the very beginning of Hamlet it showed many examples of revenge. For example In Act 1 Scene
5 Page 2 Hamlet says Haste me to know t, that I, with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of
love, May sweep to my revenge. By this Hamlet is saying he needs to know quickly who killed his
father so he can take his revenge swiftly. after that Hamlet and Ghost discuss how Hamlets father
really died. and Ghost goes on to say how revenge must be taken against The serpent that did sting thy
father s life now wears his crown. which meant his uncle King Claudius.

Hamlet has lost Ophilia to suicide. Then Hamlet discovers a letter where Claudius is planing to have
him him killed. Luckily for Hamlet he is smart enough to make a new letter saving himself and
sentences Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to death upon opening the letter. Hamlet feels no guilt for this
act because his revenge is worth more to him than these two lives. He says to Horatio Why, man, they
did make love to this employment. They are not near my conscience. Their defeat does by their own
insinuation grow. Tis dangerous when the baser nature comes between the pass and fell incensed

The Chelmno concentration camp was the first camp made for the final solution. They made the main

The camp effected the jew and other in it by killing most of them in it. The chelmno concentration
camp killed the whole Jewish population of Warthegau( Chelmno 3). Chelmno concentration camp
operated three trucks that killed the Jews and others with carbon monoxide. They killed about 150
300,000 people in the Chelmno concentration camp( Chelmno 1). Chelmno transferred jews and
others in trucks and usually transferred them to the camp a lot of Jews and they transferred some of
them in cars so they wouldn t be suspicious( Chelmno 3). 88 children from the town of Czech Town of

An Analysis of the Choice Between Separated and Mixed...
An analysis of the choice between separated and mixed operation model for ICBC( London) Abstract:
Since the fifth wave of Merge and Acquisition in the 1990s, the global banking industries have
developed towards the direction of large scale, international and omnipotent banks. The mixed
operation of the commercial banks had already been the leading trend in the 21st century. With China
s entrance into WTO at the end of last century, the Chinese financial institutions, especially the
Chinese bank industries, are destined to participate in the global economy and to face the keen
competition from the financial conglomerate of the western developed countries. The commercial
banks still operate separately at present according to the law. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The competition among commercial banks increased. Especially, after joining WTO, Chinese state
owned commercial banks face more direct threat from foreign competition. However, China s
Commercial Bank Law clearly provides the current business model of commercial banks is separate
operation, separate supervision (Qu and Sun, 2006). Also as the renovation of technology and the
continuous development of the world s financial markets, the various financial derivatives have been
promoted. Meanwhile, the integration between different financial sectors gradually strengthened. The
original separated operation and supervision mechanism hinder the innovation of financial system and
enhancement of service efficiency. ICBC (London) is facing the level of competition in the financial
sector will become more intense, which requires the development under the British FSA s supervision.
It must keep the pace of the international financial banks. That means the mixed operation will be the
future development direction. To reach this argument, this paper will be based on the primary and
secondary data of operation performance of HSBC and ICBC operated in UK, and analyze the result
of comparison to conduct the appropriate choice of operation model for ICBC operating

Immanuel Kant s Perpetual Peace
Although raised in the Christian faith, Immanuel Kant desired to approach the possibility of reaching
perpetual peace using reason, and natural laws alone. In Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch,
Kant explains the necessities required within a society that could bring about a form of perpetual
peace. In doing so, Kant s argument mostly focused on the avoidance of war, and keeping peace
within the states. Although he envisioned the possibility of this peace occurring within a society, I
argue that his notion of perpetual peace actually happening is inevitable. Of course, there are countless
ways of approaching the argument against Kant. Therefore, by using the writings of Fahon and Weil,
the argument could be shown with the support of both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She states that this force enslaves man, force before which man s flesh shrinks away. She goes about
to answer the problem of X acting out in a superior way onto another person, and explains that this
force turns that person into a thing. The force imposed onto them not only degrades them into a slave,
but eventually kills their own sense of humanity and possibly their own lives. Now drawing this back
to Fahon perspective, it could be understood that both find a problem when two forces first interact
with each other. When the two are drastically different from one another, the more advanced and
developed culture is most likely going to feel superior to the other. This then often causes the
dominant culture to treat itself as the force Weil describes, and degrades the others into things.
Additionally, Weil also stresses that this force not only destroys the one being suppressed, but also the
one using the force. She explains that force is at pitless to the man who possesses it, or thinks he does,
as it is to its victims; the second it crushes, the first it intoxicates. This description could be explained
in history when looking back onto the exercises conducted by the Nazi Party. Those who seen as being
inferior by the Nazi s were degraded into things, and eventually killed. However, Weil would also say
that the force imposed by them also caused them to turn into irrational, senseless beings. While using
the force, they lost their sense of thinking rationally, and basically in themselves too became a thing .
This again is just another problem that has shown to occur when one culture takes on the feeling of
superiority over

1. Describe the modeling technique that you were assigned in your own words.
The modeling technique that I was assigned Extended Backus Naur Form (EBNF). In software
engineering, expanded Backus Naur frame (EBNF) is a group of metasyntax documentations, any of
which can be utilized to express a setting free sentence structure. EBNF is utilized to make a formal
depiction of a formal language which can be a PC programming language. They are augmentations of
the fundamental Backus Naur frame (BNF) metasyntax documentation. EBNF is a code that
communicates the sentence structure of a formal language. An EBNF comprises of terminal images
and non terminal creation rules which are the limitations administering how terminal images can be
joined into a legitimate arrangement. Cases of terminal images incorporate alphanumeric characters,
accentuation marks, and whitespace characters. BNF is the first, most straightforward, for the most
part utilized as a part of scholarly papers of hypothetical setting, for conveying to people, instead of
being utilized as a part of compiler or parser. EBNF implies Extended BNF. There s not one single
EBNF, but rather numerous.
Reusing existing syntax learning dwelling in gauges, specifications and manuals for programming
dialects, confronts a few difficulties. A standout amongst the most significant of them is the differing
qualities of syntactic documentations: without loss of all inclusive statement, we can express that each

Analyzing Psychological Disorders: Understanding Schizophrenia and Biopsychological Case Studies
of Anxiety and Drug Abuse
Let us discuss and dive into the study of a disease called schizophrenia. We will be taking a look at its
symptoms, its causes, the areas of the brain it affects, its neural basis, and the appropriate drug
therapies for the disease. Having an informed understanding of the disease and what it entails is
crucial to making sure patients that suffer from schizophrenia receive the proper treatment and care
from their psychiatrists. Afterwards, we will also be looking at a couple of case studies involving
anxiety and drug abuse. As for now, our focus will be on the terrible disease of schizophrenia.
PART A:
We shall begin with a bit of its history, as well as what schizophrenia actually consists of. The word
schizophrenia is less than one hundred years old, and means the splitting of psychic functions. It
affects only about one percent of the world s population, however those it does affect are comprised of
all races and cultures, and socio economic factors have no effect on who developments schizophrenia.
It typically has an onset of late adolescence to early adulthood. BOOK CHAPTER 18, P.467 If a

Vladimir Nabokov s Short Stories
Vladimir Nabokov s short stories featured are Signs and Symbols, Bachmann and Terra Incognita.
Signs and Symbols focuses on a young boy institutionalized with a morbid paranoia of the outside
world and the impact this has on his elderly parents. Bachmann is about a genius composer whose
only source of affection is of Madame Perov, whose infatuation is seen in her constant attendance of
his piano recitals. Terra Incognito s main character Valliére and his companions are losing their minds
and lives to strange hallucigenic fever in a remote country in the fictional country of Zonraki. Strong
aspects of all three short stories focus on the alienation of each of the protagonists and the cause of
this, either due to madness, great creativity or delusion. This link is forged between the three, which
would have not been as obvious. To attempt to show this association, the following question arose,
which is:
The alienated person is out of touch with himself as he is out of touch with any person. (Erich Fromm,
1955) How does Nabokov convey alienation of characters well in the short stories Signs and Symbols,
Bachmann and Terra Incognita?
The three short stories, Signs and Symbols, Bachmann and Terra Incognita are going to be examined.
Nabokov is interested in people who are forcefully marginalized by society due to their imaginations.

Descartes and the Mind Essay
The topic of the mind and how do we know has been around since the beginning of time.
It is one of those questions that will most likely never be answered. I mean, the mind itself is so
perplexing that we are still learning stuff about it daily. One question that Descartes proposed was how
do we know? we still are pondering this one today. We ask it almost every day, maybe not in that way
but in some form or another. So honestly, how do we know? Whenever Descartes started studying
about the mind he denounced all of his previous opinions and started fresh. He first stated that
knowledge is seen as a building in which all the superstructure is resting on a foundation, and the
building is only as strong as its foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So he began to ponder on how to prove that he truly did exist. He finally came up with this: Thought
exists; it alone cannot be separated from me. I am; I exist this is certain. But for how long? For as long
as I am thinking; for perhaps it could also come to pass that if I were to cease all thinking I would then
utterly cease to exist. At this time I admit nothing that is not necessarily true. I am therefore precisely
nothing but a thinking thing; that is a mind, or intellect, or understanding, or reason words of whose
meanings I was previously ignorant. Yet I am a true thing and am truly existing; but what kind of
thing? I have said it already: a thinking thing (Meditation II 31).
So in proving that he existed he also proved who he was or who we are. We are thinking things things
that can function as long as we think, but the moment that we stop thinking is the moment that we no
longer exist. So is that the moment we die? Or is it something entirely different? So through this he
proved that anything that he cannot doubt then that is what he is. And whatever he can doubt, then he
is not. He now had the knowledge of knowing about himself of who and what he was.
But there was a problem with this, that even though one doubted something then it could still be true.
One could doubt that he/she won a race even though they did win. Even though

On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, at 7:55 AM the Japanese Empire led a surprise attack on the
US Naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, that would leave millions of Americans in shock, and
heartbroken. Before the attack, the United States kept a low profile on International affairs, and

In 1940, the United States was extremely against this animosity and reacted with trade embargoes and
monetary approvals. FDR had talked with the Dutch and the British to see if they would agree upon
embargoes on Japan. Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not want a conflict in the pacific as the United
States was not prepared for war. For instance, the oil embargo that was organized between the British,
the Dutch, and the United States was about 90% of Japan s imported oil. [3] This upset Japan because
without oil or fuel their military and war efforts would come to a complete stop.
Beginning of the year in 1941, FDR decided that the Pacific Fleet would move to Hawaii from San
Diego in the hopes of discouraging the invasion of the Japanese. Negotiations between Washington
and Tokyo had been going on for several months without a resolution. On July 2, 1941, the Imperial
High Command was tired of negotiations with the United States and needed to proceed with their
development within Asia even with the embargo in place and meaning it would be at a high risk of
war with the US. [4] Therefore, the Japanese had deceived the United States, ignored the arbitration,
and moved forward with their plans. The United States had hoped that this restrictive embargo would
halt Japan s assault as negotiations had continued well into November.
Instead of giving into the United States demands, the Japanese had decided to finally put their surprise

Darkness Imagery In Macbeth Essays
Darkness Imagery in William Shakespeare s Macbeth
Ambition and evil are the basic elements in William Shakespeare s Macbeth. Macbeth is a tragedy
which was written by Shakespeare in the Elizabethan Era. There was much use of Raphael Holinshed
s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland as it was necessary for creating the environments and
situations in the play. Macbeth takes place mainly in Scotland and is a play about an ambitious thane,
named Macbeth, and his wife whose flaws lead to their demise. Since Macbeth is a tragedy, probably
nothing else would be as suitable for the play than darkness imagery.

Finally, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are talking in the scene just before the murder of Banquo and
Macbeth says, quot;Light thickens, and the crow makes wing to the rooky wood: Good things of day
begin to droop and drowse, whiles night s black agents to their preys do rouse. quot; This example of
darkness imagery is saying that the day is turning into night, all the good things are going to sleep, and
the evil creatures are coming out. The evil in this previous quotation and the two before adds to the
ominous atmosphere. Since the imagery creates an ominous atmosphere it would then lead to the
second dramatic purpose, to arouse the emotions of the audience.
Darkness imagery is a very good tool for arousing the emotions of the audience. It enables people to
create a mental picture of what they are reading. For example, Duncan and Macbeth were talking
when Macbeth says aside, quot;Stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires.
quot; When words like quot;black quot; and quot;desire quot; are put in that context it creates many
horrible mental pictures about murders and fights which arouses peoples emotions. Ross is later
talking with an old man when he states quot;By the clock `tis day, and yet dark night strangles the
traveling lamp. quot; In other words;

Ethical Behavior Is Important For The Welfare Of Society
Growing up we are taught by our parent about the law but ethics is something we pick up from our

we can and cannot do is inherently instilled in us from a very young age. In today s competitive

implemented with a right and wrong mentality. To a business ethics is an instrument used to exam

The stakeholder approach is intended to provide a flexible way for managers to match these interests.
This approach helps management anticipate future elements and develop plans to combat any
problems that might occur. Stakeholders are also concerned with the survival of their company. So for
a company to be successful, stakeholders must implement a course of action that positively affects
themselves and their community.
Werther mentions that the stakeholder approach enables firms to respond to the dominant trends in
society today globalization, rapidly evolving communication technologies, and ever increasing
expectations of social goals beyond profit maximization (Werther, 2011, p.34.). Here he explains the
importance of generating profits but also explains the benefits that come from maximizing a company
s profits.
Another author calls attention to the importance of investing in the relationships with those who have
a stake in the firm. The stability of these relationships depends on the sharing of core principles and
values. This approach allows management to incorporate their personal values into the implementation
of strategic plans. Schendel describes this relationship by answering the question What do we stand

Review of Movies, In Time and Time Will Salas
The movie In Time shows a world where people are genetically engineered with a specifically limited
amount of time to live. Digital clocks on their forearm show one chronological year, which begins
ticking down at age 25, while they physically stop aging at the same age. When your time expires, you
die instantly. In this world, time is the universal currency and everything you do requires and is
rewarded with time. There are two primary time zones, based on the wealth, or time owned, of its
population. Dayton, which is poor, and New Greenwich, the wealthiest. Will, a 28 year old factory
worker from poorer Dayton saves Henry, a time wealthy New Greenwich citizen, from an attempted
robbery and murder by a gang called the Minute Men. Once safe, Henry explains to Will the truth
behind wealth: there is enough time for everyone to live a long life, but New Greenwich citizens take
most of the time and store it so they can be immortal. To ensure their position, wealthier districts raise
the cost of living, impoverishing everyone else. Henry states: For a few to be immortal, many must
die. Henry gives sleeping Will most of his time, leaving a cryptic note: Don t waste my time. This
helps Will finally realizes what Henry meant all along, and was able to understand and comprehend
his private language and personal code philosophized as discussed by the philosopher Ludwig
Wittgenstein.

The Central Problem
In the Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall case study, the question as to whether or not Merck
conducted itself in a socially responsible and ethical manner with regard to Vioxx is the central
problem we will examine in this case. Many argue that the sole problem lies within the pharmaceutical
company Merck and Co., Inc., and while that may in fact be the case, other parties such as the Food

Important facts of the case
If you search the web regarding Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall you ll find a number of
primary and secondary sources with central facts regarding the Vioxx case. While there are a number
of variables to consider, I focused on the factual data that provided integral facts about this case. In the
early 90s congress passed the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) that requires pharmaceutical
companies to pay the FDA to review proposed medicines. This came as a result of pressure to get
drugs into the market quickly as consumers were fearful that they were not receiving medicines
quickly. This act allows the FDA to provide reviews that approve or disapprove various drugs
companies seek to enter into the market; yet the process was found that two thirds of the survey lacked
confidence that adequately monitors the safety of prescriptions once they are on the market
(Lawrence, 483). Because there was pressure to get drugs into the market the FDA shortened the
approval time which caused the approval percentage to increase from 1.56 percent to 5.35 percent in
2001. While at the same

ecosystem. An ecosystem is a set of organism within a defined area or volume that interact with one
another and with their environment (Miller amp; Spoolman). A system is a collection of elements or
components that are organized for a common purpose (Rouse, 2005).

The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Pluralism
With the numerous ethical theories available, it can become difficult and overwhelming to decipher
which one offers the best guidance. Some might seem to be too strict while others may not offer
enough of a path to follow. W.D. Ross came up with a path that provides a median between some of
the popular theories by introducing the concept of prima facia duties within the idea of ethical
pluralism, a form of ethics in which there are at least two moral rules. Through explanation of what
the prima facia duties are, comparing how Ross s idea differs from Kantian ethics and utilitarianism,
and by exploring some of the benefits of adhering to Ross s idea, it becomes evident that one should
be in favor of his approach to ethics. Ross developed a list of seven prima facia duties. This idea is
described in the Ethical Pluralism excerpt stating, A prima facia duty is an excellent, nonabsolute,
permanent reason to do (or refrain from) something to keep one s word, be grateful for kindnesses,
avoid hurting others, and so on ( Ethical Pluralism 232). These duties are used to decide the
appropriate choice to make in a situation. Ross identifies a final duty. The final duty is what one
should do after he or she has taken all of the possible prima facia duties into account. One of Ross s
prima facia duties is a duty to fidelity or keeping one s promises. An example of the process for
deciding on a final duty is: Carol s cousin is coming into town on Saturday and Carol has promised

Child Sleep Research Papers
Bedtime is one of the most important times of the day for a child. Not only does sleep give children
the child a chance to rest after the day s many activities, but it also allows time for their brain to rest
and absorb the material learned throughout the day. It comes as no surprise that child sleep disorders
can be one of the most stressful issues for parents to deal with. It is important for parents to know that
sleep disorders usually do not affect the child s regular growth and development. They could,
however, be a sign of a behavioral issue, anxiety, or other physiological issues. When it comes to child
sleep disorders, here is a list of what parents need to know: Look for obvious signs that your child isn t
sleeping enough. The symptoms include excessive yawning, drooping eyelids, fatigue, and attention
deficit. These signs all indicate that your child is not sleeping well due to either physiological or
anxiety problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are several types of sleep disorders, and knowing the differences between each one will guide
you in seeking treatment. Here are a few of the most common child sleep disorders: Pediatric
obstructive sleep apnea. This occurs when the child s throat relaxes to the point of closing, causing
them to stop breathing for a period of a few seconds. Snoring is a common problem associated with
this condition. Insomnia. Children can have sleep onset association type childhood insomnia, in which
the child awakens frequently and for long periods during the night and may need the parent s
assistance to go back to sleep, or limit setting type childhood insomnia, in which the child may refuse
to go to bed and greatly delay returning to sleep when awoken. Restless Leg Syndrome. This
syndrome is characterized by a twitching or tingling in the leg muscles while lying down. A child may
move excessively at night to lessen the annoyance because movement is often the only way to relieve
the unpleasant sensation.

Feminism And The Feminist Movement Essay
The feminist movement came to fruition during the early 20th century. Over all, the push for women s
suffrage and rights was strong, but further enhanced by leaders like Alice Paul and Jane Addams. The
idea of equal rights for all was further scrutinized and contested after civil rights were granted to
former slaves. Women began to push for similar equality as illustrated through the feminist movement.
The feminist movement became very large and sprouted subsections, one being a subsection of
feminism known as social feminism. This branch of feminism was more interested in social rights and
used suffrage as a tool to obtain these rights. The question that arises from this idea of a more specific
section of feminism becomes: does social feminism qualify as feminism in its truest form? Does social
feminism embody the same ideas and morals of the feminist movement? In general, does social
feminism count as feminism? Some people question the validity of this brand of feminism. I believe
this section of feminism qualifies as feminism nonetheless. To examine this, we must first accurately
define social feminism and feminism as a whole, before we can actively compare them.
First, let us address the meaning of feminism as the overarching category, in which several specific
divisions of feminism fall. Feminism is an extremely simple concept to grasp, if one believes in equal
political, economic and social rights for men and women, then they can be classified as a

Passing seems like a fictional action, yet we still approve of it in today s society. In the novel, Passing

Dead Man
Dead Man, written and directed by Jim Jarmusch in 1995, follows the story of an unlucky accountant
named William Blake, played by Johnny Depp. After moving out West to start a new life, William
Blake is on the run after murdering the son a wealthy business owner. Accompanied by an unlikely
friend, a Native American man named Nobody, played by Garry Farmer, William Blake transforms his
life into that of a Dead Man .
In the beginning scenes of the film, William Blake watches a women be thrown from the porch of the

Every aspect of the scene sets the audience up to expect a regular Western romance. The social, and

destructive power of the Death Star, Star Wars is one movie saga that we are all familiar with. But
how did this captivating series come to be? How did it all begin? Just how did George Lucas come up

From their philosophies to the way they do battle to the way the dress, the powerful Jedi Knights of
the Star Wars galaxy have clear parallelisms with our galaxy s Samurais. Examples of these
parallelisms are the robes that the Jedi used are quite similar to the robes that the Samurai used,
another one is the Japanese katana that the Samurais used in battle and the Light Saber that the Jedi
used to keep the peace. George Lucas also borrowed ideas from other samurai movies such as Sanjuro
and Yojimbo both by Akira Kurosawa. Apart from having Asian origins, Star Wars also has Western
background. One of the earliest science fiction graphic novels known to man is Flash Gordon. It s
clear why George Lucas took some of Flash Gordon s concepts and applied it with his own films.
Flash Gordon however, also borrowed it s concepts with an even earlier sci fi comic strip: Buck
Rogers. One of the clearest similarities between Star Wars and Flash Gordon is the signature roll up
that is present in the start of every Star Wars movie. One less noticeable similarity is the vocabulary of
Flash Gordon (which was also taken from Buck Rogers). Since Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were
the only ones that mentioned of futuristic space travel and intergalactic battles, George Lucas based
the vocabulary of Star Wars on these two science fiction works of his time. The technology and the

Analysis Of A Room With A View
A Room With a View by E.M. Forster is a classic tale about a girl from Elizabethan era England trying
to find independence and purpose in the world. Lucy, the novel s main character, embarks on a
journey to Florence, Italy with her cousin during which her whole perspective is refreshed. She
experiences many new things and shares exciting times with people she knows and meets, and feels
like a new person from it. But, when she arrives back home in England, she begins to feel the
enclosure of society back on her again. Florence is a place where she can be herself, and her home on
Summer Street in England is a place where she feels the full force of class restriction. Lucy arrived in
Florence without much of an expectation. All she knew is that she wanted to experience things like
she never had before. Her cousin and chaperone for the trip, Miss Bartlett, insisted on protecting her
so she wouldn t upset Lucy s mother. Lucy, however, wanted to feel the winds of independence roll
over her, and convinced her cousin to loosen the reigns on her a bit. After an incident in which Lucy
had her guidebook stolen from her, she was left alone on the streets of Florence, with nothing but
herself standing in her way. Florence was described as a magic city where people thought and did the
most extraordinary things that has the power, perhaps, to evoke passions, good and bad, and bring
them speedily to a fulfillment (Page 55). Lucy began to feel this magic of Florence in full force,
especially as she became involved with George Emerson, a young man she had met there. George was
of particular interest to Lucy, as he was trustworthy, intelligent, and even kind (Page 44). She shared
her first kiss with him, albeit somewhat surprisingly, and even more surprisingly, witnessed a murder
in the streets. Things like this could have never happened for Lucy in her hometown. The excitement,
the passion, the freedom, all are things she longed for living in protection. All of this came to a
screeching halt for Lucy, however, when it was time to return home to England. After a few months
elsewhere in Italy, Lucy returned home with a man named Cecil she had met and was now engaged to
marry. To her dismay, she saw very quickly what

Cultural Diversity In Nursing Research
Red group, it is with respect that we disagree with your stance regarding cultural diversity and safety
in the workplace. We believe you failed to prove how culturally diverse nurses improve patient care.
Your statement By providing culturally competent care, nurses can play a large role in enhancing
patient outcomes, seems to us to be a statement, and no proof was presented as to that outcome. What
were the outcomes? Were the outcomes positive or negative? Were they patient outcomes or nursing
outcomes? There was no evidence presented to validate this statement either way. Those who are in

Your statement regarding the language barriers slowing down efficient treatment only provides proof
of our stance that BSN prepared nurses have a broader, more in depth education based in areas such as
liberal arts and instruction in community health, public health, research, nursing leadership, and
nursing management (Cowen, 2011). Thus proving our stance that education in nursing is more
important to deliver safe culturally competent patient care. Definitely, language barriers between
healthcare staff and patients can hinder appropriate delivery of care. What happens if you do not have
a nursing staff that has the same background of the patient? As a culturally competent nurse, you
know that there are other avenues to resolve that, like using a hospital interpreter in person or using a

The Statement Of Teaching Philosophy
My Philosophy
Introduction
The statement of teaching philosophy (also called the teaching statement or teaching philosophy
statement) promotes reflective practice by encouraging instructors to describe their teaching methods,
to justify why they use those methods, to analyze the effectiveness of those methods, and to consider
how they might appropriately modify those methods in future courses. (Schönwetter et al., 2002)
Stake holder motivation, engagement, cognitive associations, and personal values are the principal
elements of education. The attainment of knowledge, standards mastery, and the ability to reason

For example, many first drafts include general statements about learning goals as well as teaching
practices. (Kearns Sullivan, 2011) Teachers are encouraged to systematically change declarative
statements about their passion for teaching moments in the classroom that speak of learning goals and
personal qualities. It is through reflection of experiences that teachers can build personal expectations
of themselves.
Review of the Literature Within a framework of teaching, educators focus on the nature of knowledge
and how students gain that knowledge. There are five established, major educational philosophies.
They are behaviorism, essentialism, progressivism, existentialism and perennialism. These
philosophies greatly focus on what should be taught. Behavioral learning theories are simply
explained as reinforcing behaviors one would like to see repeated. Slavin states, Reinforcement will
increase the frequency of a behavior with positive or negative consequences. (2012, p. 120) The
student environment impacts student decisions and learning. Positive reinforcement is the application
of a stimulus. Negative reinforcement is the application of a punishment. The role of teachers in
behavioral learning theories is to provide immediate and concise feedback of behaviors. Teachers
should provide tasks with small,

Lust is an incredibly strong feeling that can prove to be almost uncontrollable, leading it to commonly

even when one is in love he or she does not recognize it. Many think that love just comes knocking on
one s door and one will know when it does, but they don t realize that for love to occur a relationship

very religious, and in tune with their bodies much like great runners are. The characters in the poem

How Did Thomas Paine Use Ethos In The Crisis No 1
No Paine, No Gain Heralded as the leader of a new age of philosophy and eventual rebellion, Thomas
Paine gave way to the birth of America and its subsequent constitution. Presenting his views in The
Crisis, No 1, he explicitly petitions for a call to arms and separation from the motherland. His
associate Patrick Henry wrote the Virginia Convention, detailing a similar argument for independence,
albeit to a lesser impact on American colonists. The Crisis, No 1 is more persuasive than the Virginia
Convention because its author employs logos and pathos to push Americans to continue the fight
against Britain. To begin with, Paine uses a multitude of logos specific arguments. Toward the end of
the piece he describes the present army which gives the readers a justified hope in the American
militia. He writes, ¨Once more we are again collected and collecting; our new army at both ends of the

Divorce Effects Divorce
How Divorce Affects the Formation of Healthy Friendships and Relationships
Several factors come into play when considering the impact that a divorce has on the child s future
relationships, including age at the time of the divorce, gender, upbringing, etc. For the most part
however, there are a few crucial parts of a relationship that most divorces affect, whether the
relationship be with a friend, family member or significant other.
Parental divorce often decreases the level of trust that a child of divorce finds in a relationship.
Children whose parent s have divorced exhibit a fear of being rejected by those they become close to,
and often distrust that their friends, family members, or significant others will remain loyal and close.
This lack of trust often hampers any deepening in the relationship, and is believed to be the result of
having a dysfunctional example of a marital relationship set before them. Many children of divorce
have reportedly been less trusting of their own or a partner s fidelity, and have had difficulty in fully
committing to or choosing one person.
In addition, studies have shown that those who have had first hand experience of a divorce in their
home are 38% more likely than to go through their own divorce than those who did not. These
children suffer through weakened relationships with nearly all family members, especially those
members with whom the child does not visit frequently. Since 90% of custodial parents are mothers

How Did The Cold War Containment
The U.S. had a foreign policy of containment during the Cold War and wished to stop the spread of
communism by the Soviets because they send economic aid to Western European countries and they
collaborate with democratic nations who are resisting subjugation. The containment policy resulted in
the joining of NATO (i.e. the end of isolationism) and the majorly successful Truman Doctrine,
Marshall Plan, and the Berlin airlift. Those policies paved the road to stop the spread of communism
to the Western European countries and Asia. (3)
The United States sent economic aid to Western European countries in order to contain communism.
The Marshall plan is now known as the most unselfish act in history. (The Cold War Era 723) It s

In a speech given on June 5th, 1947, George C. Marshall, Secretary of State, said, Europe s
requirements...of essential products principally from America are much greater than her present ability
to pay that she must have substantial help or face economic, social, and political deterioration of a
very grave character. (Cold War Reader 17) This proves foreign policy was containment because they
wanted to rebuild the damaged countries economy, so they can resist communism. In order to ensure
communism did not spread and prosperity was reached, a healthy economy was needed. The Berlin
Airlift was a huge step to ending communism. The Soviets closed all ground routes into the city
because they wanted Western powers out. The United States fought back by flying over Berlin in
cargo planes to supply Berlin with necessary supplies. Flying Douglas Aircraft was one of the major
cargo planes at the time. The company created a political cartoon which

In The Mood For Love Social Control
The social control perspective reminds us that protection objectives may be used to generate and
perpetuate control in our life. In the history of film, many directors try to create films with a setting of
relation of power between looking and being looked at. Some of the films illustrate how the reality
being present through the forms of surveillance, social engineering and message control. In other
words, films are ways to tell the audience, or the public, how the society looks like, and provides more
persuasive and obvious messages. Wong Kar Wai s In the Mood for Love (2000), Rainer Werner
Fassbinder s Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974), and Stanley Kubrick s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) are
all able to convey the main social messages at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this film, diegetic sounds and non diegetic sounds effectively help explain the scenarios through the
nature awareness. Kubrick first states that the main concept of the film is forced more on a visual
experience than anything else; however, the layers of sound have actually created a strong impact and
attract the audience s attention. Kubrick demonstrates the nature of humanity by using the
relationships with technology, violence, sexuality, and social awareness. The film first introduces the
importance of violence through the apes that the violence seems to be a way to control others, no
matter in the animal world or the humanity society. In the sequence, The Dawn of Man, one of the
important scenes illustrates how apes find tools and use them as weapons to fight with each other.
Later, the sequence shows an ape holding the tools and hitting the ground with the tools along with a
dramatic non diegetic sound emphasizing the significance of the scene, and this scene also
foreshadows that the violence will gradually get more serious relating to the human society later in the
film. Other then the sounds, Kubrick also uses jump cuts from the ape to the monolith, then back to
the ape followed by the animal bodies hitting the ground, finally cutting between the ape and the tool
hitting the ground. With the shots, Kubrick exaggerates the violence to call attention to the action, so
introducing how violence will play an effective role in the rest of the film, as well as how violence
influences the behavior of human as they

Alcohol And Hepatocellular Tumor
The liver is the organ responsible for filtering chemicals and metabolizing drugs. It also makes
proteins responsible for blood clotting and other functions. When alcohol reaches the liver, it produces
a dangerous enzyme known as acetaldehyde. The liver needs water to do its basic functions. Alcohol
acts as a diuretic and dehydrates the body, depriving the liver of the water it needs to function. When
acetaldehyde and other alcoholic toxins build up in the liver, they can cause a variety of health
problems.
One of the most commonly known problems of the liver caused by alcohol is hepatocellular
carcinoma (HCC), a type of liver cancer. There are other types of liver cancers, such as
cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile duct, and hepatic angiosarcoma, a rare malignant
mesenchymal tumor. Both of these cancers are not caused by alcohol abuse. HCC is caused by
cirrhosis or other long term damage to the liver. Cirrhosis is most often caused by alcohol abuse,
hemochromatosis, or a hepatitis B or C infection. Symptoms of HCC include abdominal pain, easy
bruising, enlarged abdomen, jaundiced skin or eyes, and unexplained weight loss. Many tests are

Alcohol abuse and hepatitis B and C are the most common causes of cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can cause
weakness, loss of appetite, jaundice, itching, and fatigue, and can be diagnosed by blood tests,

and ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, hepatic encephalopathy, portal vein hypertension,
hepatorenal and hepatopulmonary syndrome, hypersplenism, and liver cancer. One of the most
common treatments of cirrhosis is a liver transplant. However, alcoholics have to be sober for six
months to prove that they are serious about taking care of their new liver and staying sober after the

The Cause And Effects Of The Seventh-Day Adventism
Some things that i found out about Adventism, was that they are also called the seventh day
Adventism. The Adventism moved to upstate New York in the 1840s, they started moving because of
the cause and effect of the millerite movement. All this happened between the revivals of the religious,
also know as the Second Great Awakening . During the time of religious revivals a baptist preacher
William Miller had predicted something that was going to happen. While he was reading Daniel 8:14,
he predicted that Christ would return March 21, 1843 and march 21, 1844. Miller prediction was
known as the Great Disappointment, they Called it that cause his prediction didn t turn out good, it
was a failure and it let a lot of people down also got everyone hopes up. Which caused a lot of the
millerites to become disillusioned, because they really believed what he had said. But miller wasn t
the only one who thought that Christ was returning, Hiram Edson said that he seen Christ standing at
the altar of heaven , and he agreed with miller about that he predict but he said that he was right about
everything else but the place of the return of Christ. Based off all the confusing of the returning of
Christ caused Joseph Bates and James and Ellen White to become the founding pioneers of the SDA
church. the Seventh day Adventism is one of the world s larger global presence , because it have a
bigger population than the other churches. The people of the Seventh day Adventism says the Bible

Steven Spielberg Bully
When Steven Spielberg was in high school, he was often bullied and made fun of because he was an
Orthodox Jew. One particular bully would bloody Spielberg s nose, grind his face in the dirt, and stick
his face in water fountains. It didn t stay this way forever though; Spielberg would cast this same bully
in a short film of his, titled Escape to Nowhere as a John Wayne type hero (7 8). The fifteen minute
short film helped introduce him to special effects, and won him first prize at a teen film festival (8).
Spielberg s first film to turn a profit, though, was called Firelight, and cost $400 to make, but earned
$500 after being shown at a local theater (10). When he was in the Boy Scouts, Spielberg was able to
persuade the Scout master to let ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The producers of The Sugarland Express had paid $175,000 for the film rights to a book about a
shark. They even had a director assigned to the project already, but dumped him after Spielberg saw it,
and asked if he could direct it (37 44). The film was Jaws and it became what is known as the first
blockbuster. During its opening weekend, Jaws made over $7 million, and went on to break many
worldwide box office records (Mokry). Besides launching Steven Spielberg s rise to fame, it also
turned actors such as Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfus into leading men after the film s release.
Unsurprisingly, Spielberg became quite wealthy, earning over $4million after taxes (Sanello 51 57).
Following the incredible success of Jaws, Steven Spielberg s next project was Close Encounters of the
Third Kind. It wasn t as successful as Jaws, but it still made over $270 million at the box office, which
was still a huge profit from a $20 million budget. After Close Encounters, Spielberg followed it up
with a war comedy titled 1941 based upon the events of the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of
1941

Hawaiian Identity
Hawaiians have experienced difficulty with understanding their identity since the arrival of the first
haoles, and since then with the promise of labor and tropical paradise, people of all different races and
cultures flocked to the islands. Through years of interracial marriages, Hawaii has become home to
many beautiful hapa children of different backgrounds and ethnicities. However, as a result of these
mixed bloods and cultures, many have had difficulty coping with where exactly they belonged.
Identity is essential to grasping vital concepts such as who we are as individuals, our beliefs and
values, personality, where we belong, and what we believe. Intersecting Circles does a lovely job of

Realization that she had never gotten a chance to say goodbye, never even responded to the last letter
written asking to come visit soon, overcame her. Time was moving too quickly, and by isolating
herself from her Hawaiian heritage, she missed insight into the lives of the people she cared about the
most. Fearing it was too late to return to Hawaii, that she had already abandoned her heritage and
family, she confessed this regret to her friend. Sindiwa gently explained that it wasn t too late for her,
It was hard for you, a half caste. I used to watch you secretly. Your two selves, warring with each other
(288).
Kiana then decided it was time to return home to Honolulu in an attempt to reconnect with the family
she had forgotten. Unsure of how New York had changed her, her family was somewhat hesitant at
first. Nevertheless, they welcomed her back with open arms, and overflowing hearts. There was no
longer awkwardness, no feelings of separation or burden as she resumed life on the island. Although
she feels that it is too late to make up for some things, she comes to terms that Hawaiian or Caucasian,

Football s Influence On American Culture
High School is closer to the core of the American experience than anything else I can think of. Kurt
Vonnegut
America, the quintessential melting pot, allows us to experience an extraordinary amount of variety in
people when it comes to ethnicity, culture, language, personality, work ethic, and background.
High School consists of all different experiences. Sports have a huge impact on culture in many
countries, but America has uniquely created and enjoyed its own. Obviously, sports such as football
have a tremendous affect on American culture. The Football Friday Night tradition starts in high
school and continues into adulthood with college ball on Saturdays and professional ball on Sundays.
High school reflects the adult experience.

  • 2. Persky s Criticism The judge faced criticism from the public for his decision to sentence Turner to jail for only six months. Rather than face continuous criticism, it would be in Persky s best interest to step down from his position as a judge. In A Judge s Recall Is Warranted for an Indecent Sentence William G. Otis of Georgetown University Law Center mentions that regardless of how earnest and well founded a sentence is, if the public disagrees, the judge s removal is warranted. The reason why Judge Persky faces such criticism is because as a result of his choices, he ignored Turner s victim s sense of security and safety. • 3. Richard Scrushy Case From ethical and legal perspectives, what do you feel business has learned from the Scrushy situation? Richard Scrushy defrauded, stakeholders, stockholders, and the community out of millions of dollars. His deceptive, unethical, and commanding behavior was the stone that caused the biggest misappropriation avalanche of all time. We must consider this question, how is corporate cheating happening and who is heading the deception? Behind every crime, there is a ringleader or a group of individuals calling the shots. In this case, Scrushy was the one who told his family meeting members to fix financial records, so HealthSouth to meet or exceed the business financial goals. A person from the beginning may have the objective to cheat; others get sucked into the whirlpool of white collar crime. Corporate fraud is rampant, and it is becoming a part of our culture. We expect to hear about some cheating or embezzlement within the financial world. That should not be the case. However, one would think that after Tyco, Enron, WorldCom, and more recently VW, that business had learned that cooking the books or in the case of VW (lie to emission regulators) does not get you a gold medal in the end. Arel, Beaudoin, Cianci, (2011) argue that executive ethical leadership and an high quality internal audit function, can positively guide accounting managers making decisions involving uncertainties. In the case of HealthSouth, the lack of morality and integrity diverted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An analysis of the choice between separated and mixed operation model for ICBC( London) Abstract: Since the fifth wave of Merge and Acquisition in the 1990s, the global banking industries have developed towards the direction of large scale, international and omnipotent banks. The mixed operation of the commercial banks had already been the leading trend in the 21st century. With China s entrance into WTO at the end of last century, the Chinese financial institutions, especially the Chinese bank industries, are destined to participate in the global economy and to face the keen competition from the financial conglomerate of the western developed countries. The commercial banks still operate separately at present according to the law. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The competition among commercial banks increased. Especially, after joining WTO, Chinese state owned commercial banks face more direct threat from foreign competition. However, China s Commercial Bank Law clearly provides the current business model of commercial banks is separate operation, separate supervision (Qu and Sun, 2006). Also as the renovation of technology and the continuous development of the world s financial markets, the various financial derivatives have been promoted. Meanwhile, the integration between different financial sectors gradually strengthened. The original separated operation and supervision mechanism hinder the innovation of financial system and enhancement of service efficiency. ICBC (London) is facing the level of competition in the financial sector will become more intense, which requires the development under the British FSA s supervision. • 8. Immanuel Kant s Perpetual Peace Although raised in the Christian faith, Immanuel Kant desired to approach the possibility of reaching perpetual peace using reason, and natural laws alone. In Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch, Kant explains the necessities required within a society that could bring about a form of perpetual peace. In doing so, Kant s argument mostly focused on the avoidance of war, and keeping peace within the states. Although he envisioned the possibility of this peace occurring within a society, I argue that his notion of perpetual peace actually happening is inevitable. Of course, there are countless ways of approaching the argument against Kant. Therefore, by using the writings of Fahon and Weil, the argument could be shown with the support of both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She states that this force enslaves man, force before which man s flesh shrinks away. She goes about to answer the problem of X acting out in a superior way onto another person, and explains that this force turns that person into a thing. The force imposed onto them not only degrades them into a slave, but eventually kills their own sense of humanity and possibly their own lives. Now drawing this back to Fahon perspective, it could be understood that both find a problem when two forces first interact with each other. When the two are drastically different from one another, the more advanced and developed culture is most likely going to feel superior to the other. This then often causes the dominant culture to treat itself as the force Weil describes, and degrades the others into things. Additionally, Weil also stresses that this force not only destroys the one being suppressed, but also the one using the force. She explains that force is at pitless to the man who possesses it, or thinks he does, as it is to its victims; the second it crushes, the first it intoxicates. This description could be explained in history when looking back onto the exercises conducted by the Nazi Party. Those who seen as being inferior by the Nazi s were degraded into things, and eventually killed. However, Weil would also say that the force imposed by them also caused them to turn into irrational, senseless beings. While using the force, they lost their sense of thinking rationally, and basically in themselves too became a thing . This again is just another problem that has shown to occur when one culture takes on the feeling of superiority over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The modeling technique that I was assigned Extended Backus Naur Form (EBNF). In software engineering, expanded Backus Naur frame (EBNF) is a group of metasyntax documentations, any of which can be utilized to express a setting free sentence structure. EBNF is utilized to make a formal depiction of a formal language which can be a PC programming language. They are augmentations of the fundamental Backus Naur frame (BNF) metasyntax documentation. EBNF is a code that communicates the sentence structure of a formal language. An EBNF comprises of terminal images and non terminal creation rules which are the limitations administering how terminal images can be joined into a legitimate arrangement. Cases of terminal images incorporate alphanumeric characters, accentuation marks, and whitespace characters. Signs and Symbols focuses on a young boy institutionalized with a morbid paranoia of the outside world and the impact this has on his elderly parents. Bachmann is about a genius composer whose only source of affection is of Madame Perov, whose infatuation is seen in her constant attendance of his piano recitals. Terra Incognito s main character Valliére and his companions are losing their minds and lives to strange hallucigenic fever in a remote country in the fictional country of Zonraki. Strong aspects of all three short stories focus on the alienation of each of the protagonists and the cause of this, either due to madness, great creativity or delusion. This link is forged between the three, which would have not been as obvious. To attempt to show this association, the following question arose, which is: The alienated person is out of touch with himself as he is out of touch with any person. (Erich Fromm, 1955) How does Nabokov convey alienation of characters well in the short stories Signs and Symbols, Bachmann and Terra Incognita? The three short stories, Signs and Symbols, Bachmann and Terra Incognita are going to be examined. I mean, the mind itself is so perplexing that we are still learning stuff about it daily. One question that Descartes proposed was how do we know? we still are pondering this one today. We ask it almost every day, maybe not in that way but in some form or another. So honestly, how do we know? Whenever Descartes started studying about the mind he denounced all of his previous opinions and started fresh. He first stated that knowledge is seen as a building in which all the superstructure is resting on a foundation, and the building is only as strong as its foundation ... I am; I exist this is certain. But for how long? For as long as I am thinking; for perhaps it could also come to pass that if I were to cease all thinking I would then utterly cease to exist. At this time I admit nothing that is not necessarily true. I am therefore precisely nothing but a thinking thing; that is a mind, or intellect, or understanding, or reason words of whose meanings I was previously ignorant. Yet I am a true thing and am truly existing; but what kind of thing? I have said it already: a thinking thing (Meditation II 31). So in proving that he existed he also proved who he was or who we are. We are thinking things things that can function as long as we think, but the moment that we stop thinking is the moment that we no longer exist. So is that the moment we die? Or is it something entirely different? So through this he proved that anything that he cannot doubt then that is what he is. And whatever he can doubt, then he is not. In 1940, the United States was extremely against this animosity and reacted with trade embargoes and monetary approvals. FDR had talked with the Dutch and the British to see if they would agree upon embargoes on Japan. Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not want a conflict in the pacific as the United States was not prepared for war. For instance, the oil embargo that was organized between the British, the Dutch, and the United States was about 90% of Japan s imported oil. [3] This upset Japan because without oil or fuel their military and war efforts would come to a complete stop. Beginning of the year in 1941, FDR decided that the Pacific Fleet would move to Hawaii from San Diego in the hopes of discouraging the invasion of the Japanese. Negotiations between Washington and Tokyo had been going on for several months without a resolution. On July 2, 1941, the Imperial High Command was tired of negotiations with the United States and needed to proceed with their development within Asia even with the embargo in place and meaning it would be at a high risk of war with the US. Macbeth is a tragedy which was written by Shakespeare in the Elizabethan Era. There was much use of Raphael Holinshed s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland as it was necessary for creating the environments and situations in the play. Macbeth takes place mainly in Scotland and is a play about an ambitious thane, named Macbeth, and his wife whose flaws lead to their demise. The evil in this previous quotation and the two before adds to the ominous atmosphere. Since the imagery creates an ominous atmosphere it would then lead to the second dramatic purpose, to arouse the emotions of the audience. Darkness imagery is a very good tool for arousing the emotions of the audience. It enables people to create a mental picture of what they are reading. For example, Duncan and Macbeth were talking when Macbeth says aside, quot;Stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires. quot; When words like quot;black quot; and quot;desire quot; are put in that context it creates many horrible mental pictures about murders and fights which arouses peoples emotions. Digital clocks on their forearm show one chronological year, which begins ticking down at age 25, while they physically stop aging at the same age. When your time expires, you die instantly. In this world, time is the universal currency and everything you do requires and is rewarded with time. There are two primary time zones, based on the wealth, or time owned, of its population. Dayton, which is poor, and New Greenwich, the wealthiest. Will, a 28 year old factory worker from poorer Dayton saves Henry, a time wealthy New Greenwich citizen, from an attempted robbery and murder by a gang called the Minute Men. Once safe, Henry explains to Will the truth behind wealth: there is enough time for everyone to live a long life, but New Greenwich citizens take most of the time and store it so they can be immortal. To ensure their position, wealthier districts raise the cost of living, impoverishing everyone else. Henry states: For a few to be immortal, many must die. Henry gives sleeping Will most of his time, leaving a cryptic note: Don t waste my time. Merck, The FDA, And The Vioexx Recall The Central Problem In the Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall case study, the question as to whether or not Merck conducted itself in a socially responsible and ethical manner with regard to Vioxx is the central problem we will examine in this case. Many argue that the sole problem lies within the pharmaceutical company Merck and Co., Inc., and while that may in fact be the case, other parties such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can be held responsible as well. Important facts of the case If you search the web regarding Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall you ll find a number of primary and secondary sources with central facts regarding the Vioxx case. While there are a number of variables to consider, I focused on the factual data that provided integral facts about this case. In the early 90s congress passed the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) that requires pharmaceutical companies to pay the FDA to review proposed medicines. This came as a result of pressure to get drugs into the market quickly as consumers were fearful that they were not receiving medicines quickly. This act allows the FDA to provide reviews that approve or disapprove various drugs companies seek to enter into the market; yet the process was found that two thirds of the survey lacked confidence that adequately monitors the safety of prescriptions once they are on the market (Lawrence, 483). Because there was pressure to get drugs into the market the FDA shortened the approval time which caused the approval percentage to increase from 1.56 percent to 5.35 percent in 2001. • 21. The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Pluralism With the numerous ethical theories available, it can become difficult and overwhelming to decipher which one offers the best guidance. Some might seem to be too strict while others may not offer enough of a path to follow. W.D. Ross came up with a path that provides a median between some of the popular theories by introducing the concept of prima facia duties within the idea of ethical pluralism, a form of ethics in which there are at least two moral rules. Through explanation of what the prima facia duties are, comparing how Ross s idea differs from Kantian ethics and utilitarianism, and by exploring some of the benefits of adhering to Ross s idea, it becomes evident that one should be in favor of his approach to ethics. Ross developed a list of seven prima facia duties. This idea is described in the Ethical Pluralism excerpt stating, A prima facia duty is an excellent, nonabsolute, permanent reason to do (or refrain from) something to keep one s word, be grateful for kindnesses, avoid hurting others, and so on ( Ethical Pluralism 232). These duties are used to decide the appropriate choice to make in a situation. Ross identifies a final duty. The final duty is what one should do after he or she has taken all of the possible prima facia duties into account. One of Ross s prima facia duties is a duty to fidelity or keeping one s promises. An example of the process for deciding on a final duty is: Carol s cousin is coming into town on Saturday and Carol has promised ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Feminism And The Feminist Movement Essay The feminist movement came to fruition during the early 20th century. Over all, the push for women s suffrage and rights was strong, but further enhanced by leaders like Alice Paul and Jane Addams. The idea of equal rights for all was further scrutinized and contested after civil rights were granted to former slaves. Women began to push for similar equality as illustrated through the feminist movement. The feminist movement became very large and sprouted subsections, one being a subsection of feminism known as social feminism. This branch of feminism was more interested in social rights and used suffrage as a tool to obtain these rights. The question that arises from this idea of a more specific section of feminism becomes: does social feminism qualify as feminism in its truest form? Does social feminism embody the same ideas and morals of the feminist movement? In general, does social feminism count as feminism? Some people question the validity of this brand of feminism. I believe this section of feminism qualifies as feminism nonetheless. To examine this, we must first accurately define social feminism and feminism as a whole, before we can actively compare them. First, let us address the meaning of feminism as the overarching category, in which several specific divisions of feminism fall. Feminism is an extremely simple concept to grasp, if one believes in equal political, economic and social rights for men and women, then they can be classified as a ... • 28. Analysis Of A Room With A View A Room With a View by E.M. Forster is a classic tale about a girl from Elizabethan era England trying to find independence and purpose in the world. Lucy, the novel s main character, embarks on a journey to Florence, Italy with her cousin during which her whole perspective is refreshed. She experiences many new things and shares exciting times with people she knows and meets, and feels like a new person from it. But, when she arrives back home in England, she begins to feel the enclosure of society back on her again. Florence is a place where she can be herself, and her home on Summer Street in England is a place where she feels the full force of class restriction. Lucy arrived in Florence without much of an expectation. All she knew is that she wanted to experience things like she never had before. Her cousin and chaperone for the trip, Miss Bartlett, insisted on protecting her so she wouldn t upset Lucy s mother. Lucy, however, wanted to feel the winds of independence roll over her, and convinced her cousin to loosen the reigns on her a bit. After an incident in which Lucy had her guidebook stolen from her, she was left alone on the streets of Florence, with nothing but herself standing in her way. Florence was described as a magic city where people thought and did the most extraordinary things that has the power, perhaps, to evoke passions, good and bad, and bring them speedily to a fulfillment (Page 55). Lucy began to feel this magic of Florence in full force, especially as she became involved with George Emerson, a young man she had met there. George was of particular interest to Lucy, as he was trustworthy, intelligent, and even kind (Page 44). She shared her first kiss with him, albeit somewhat surprisingly, and even more surprisingly, witnessed a murder in the streets. Things like this could have never happened for Lucy in her hometown. The excitement, the passion, the freedom, all are things she longed for living in protection. All of this came to a screeching halt for Lucy, however, when it was time to return home to England. After a few months elsewhere in Italy, Lucy returned home with a man named Cecil she had met and was now engaged to marry. To her dismay, she saw very quickly what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Divorce Effects Divorce How Divorce Affects the Formation of Healthy Friendships and Relationships Several factors come into play when considering the impact that a divorce has on the child s future relationships, including age at the time of the divorce, gender, upbringing, etc. For the most part however, there are a few crucial parts of a relationship that most divorces affect, whether the relationship be with a friend, family member or significant other. Parental divorce often decreases the level of trust that a child of divorce finds in a relationship. Children whose parent s have divorced exhibit a fear of being rejected by those they become close to, and often distrust that their friends, family members, or significant others will remain loyal and close. This lack of trust often hampers any deepening in the relationship, and is believed to be the result of having a dysfunctional example of a marital relationship set before them. Many children of divorce have reportedly been less trusting of their own or a partner s fidelity, and have had difficulty in fully committing to or choosing one person. In addition, studies have shown that those who have had first hand experience of a divorce in their home are 38% more likely than to go through their own divorce than those who did not. Kubrick first states that the main concept of the film is forced more on a visual experience than anything else; however, the layers of sound have actually created a strong impact and attract the audience s attention. Kubrick demonstrates the nature of humanity by using the relationships with technology, violence, sexuality, and social awareness. The film first introduces the importance of violence through the apes that the violence seems to be a way to control others, no matter in the animal world or the humanity society. In the sequence, The Dawn of Man, one of the important scenes illustrates how apes find tools and use them as weapons to fight with each other.
