Examples Of Exegetical Fallacies
Your post on Exegetical Fallacies was insightful and thought provoking. Before learning Greek,
hearing preachers use Greek words throughout their sermons fascinated me, and that pushed me
to do more research and learn. As time moved on, I felt inclined to include Greek in my sermons
especially after Greek I. It seemed easy to research a passage, throw out a few Greek words, and
move on. After studying Greek further, I discovered that most preachers were misinterpreting and
misapplying Greek words within their sermons. I have to agree that often times, even now; I may
find myself guilty of some of Carson s fallacies. Your example of the disciples and apostles
misinterpretation shows how important it is to determine the true meaning in the correct

Is The Mood Of The Song Here There And Everywhere By John...
Yesterday. Hey Jude. Let It Be. Those are the songs that come to mind when thinking of Paul
McCartney s masterpieces with The Beatles. However, Here, There and Everywhere, a beautiful
love song from the album Revolver, seems to go rather unnoticed. But one listen is all it takes to
see why John Lennon called it one of his favorite songs of The Beatles. The song s seemingly
simple tune and love lyrics hide subtle musical complexities that help give it a classic sound that
endures through time. Here, There and Everywhere has a fairly simple form: intro, verse,
bridge, verse, bridge, verse, outro. The form reflects the continual shifts in keys throughout the
song from the opening key of G major, to the prevalent relative major to the parallel minor key of
B flat major, to the instrumental use of the parallel g minor, and to the occasional relative e
minor1. Paul opens the song with an intro section, something that not many other preceding
Beatles songs possessed. This intro also commences the later key changes by shifting from the
original G major key, to the B flat major key at the end of the two lines. The intro is followed by a
series of verses and bridges. The verses are generally in the key of G major, with short occasional...

Because the song is in keys that are kind the ears and provides harmonies and melodies that yield
a rich yet calming sound, just the melody alone can withstand the test of time. The lyrics read like
a simple love poem and love ballads hardly change throughout time. Listening to this during the
1960s and listening to it now (purely musically, not influentially) will provide similar feelings of
love and devotion. It really is no wonder why it is a favorite among Paul McCartney, John Lennon,
and George Martin. I m sure I m not the only who feels the need to listen to this masterpiece here,

Dehumanization And Oppression In Elie Wiesel s Novel Night
In the novel Night, the author and protagonist, Elie, goes through change because of
dehumanization and oppression. During World War II, Adolf Hitler wanted to abolish all Jews
from society by murdering and putting them in concentration camps, an event known as the
Holocaust. These camps held millions of Jews that were treated like dehumanized animals by the
German police. Night is a novel written about the experiences about a boy, Elie Wiesel, who lived
through the holocaust. He wrote Night in order to give a voice to those that were unable to do so
of the events in the concentration camps. In Night, Elie Wiesel s faith was strong in the beginning
of the novel, and started to decrease during his time at the concentration camp, and completely
disappeared by the end of the Holocaust. In the beginning of the story Elie s Jewish faith was
strong and devoted that he wanted to become more knowledgeable and pursue a career in it. In
Night, Elie states, He wanted to drive the idea that studying Kabbalahfrom my mind... I succeeded
on my own in finding a master for myself... (Wiesel 4). The quote explains that even though Elie
s father was against Elie studying Kabbalah, he decided to find himself someone to teach him
about his faith. Elie was devoted to his faith that he diobeyed his father s request and found
himself a mentor. Additionally, Elie states, and Moishe the Beadle, the poorest of the poor of
Sighet, spoke to me for hours on end about the Kabbalah s revelations and its mysteries.Together
we would would read...not to learn it by heart but to discover within the essence of divinity
(Wiesel 5). Elie and Moishe the Beadle, Elie s new mentor, read the Zohar together and talked
about the meaning of each verse to each other for long periods of time. Once he had found his
mentor, Elie spent most of his time with Moishe in order to talk about the Kabbalah faith and get
a better understanding of what his faith is asking of him for any situation they may come across.
The oppression of the Holocaust and being in the concentration camps led Elie s faith in God to
decrease. Elie states, Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master
of the Universe, chose to be silent. What

Focus Group Discussion
Objective The main objective of this focus group discussion was to get information from human
resource representatives, as well as a few mangers of surrounding companies about their feeling
and attitudes toward MBA programs, North Dakota State University s program specifically. Our
discussion focused on four main aspects of MBA programs: employer sponsored MBA programs,
attitudes toward MBA programs, the pros and cons of the MBA program at North DakotaState
University, and the human resource representatives thoughts on MBA employees. The information
collected from the discussion will be used to encompass MBA education in the greater Fargo

To make conversations more personal, the moderator had to address some more sensitive subjects
that would in turn make people more shy to answer, but after a few individuals would give
answers, other would bring it back to them and answer the question fully. Also, when you addressed
an individual by name, it make the conversation more relatable and would result in improvement
participation rates and positively affect quality of data gathering.
What We Would Do Differently
If we could do this focus group again, we would try and include a larger collection of
participants. This improvement would allow us to hear more insights, and give our group a wider
variety of responses. A smaller sized group may be more personal, but doesn t offer as much depth
as a slightly larger size.
Additionally, something that would help is finding ways to get people to participate more during
the focus group. Not everyone will have as much experience as the next person, but it s still
important to hear their thoughts and opinions. The more that people participate, the better our
findings will

Reflection On Socialization
The process of socialization must happen in order to raise a child from their own individual
oriented lifestyle into one that will thrive within a diverse society. Though the child compromises
aspects of their original, uncultured persona, the trade off is for the better: a needy child could
attend school and gain independence, or an ornery toddler could learn the balance of actions and
consequences through time outs. From what I have observed, effective socializationrequires that the
child must primarily learn from others of the same general status and age, as well as be able to find
their niche within the whole group to specialize their methods and actions accordingly.
I personally witnessed socialization in action and how it may initially cause rifts within a child
s psyche as they find their niche in their society. For example, last year I interned at a women s
substance abuse rehabilitation center, concentrating on the resident children and their resulting
behavioral tendencies. There was one 5 year old girl who I bonded notably closer to than all of
the other kids. During behavioral therapy sessions, I discovered that exposure to alcohol in utero
had led to her developing various emotional and attachment disorders. Her natural reaction to
triggering situations or conflict was to scream and whine relentlessly until she got her way, so
in therapy she was taught self soothing methods and practiced identifying her emotions in order
to remedy her behavior. During counseling, she made tremendous progress, quickly seeming to
understand the emotional concepts presented to her. However, when the morning therapy
sessions were done, she would go to preschool and act out as if she learned nothing. One day, I
was called into her classroom because she had allegedly struck a classmate after he stole a toy
from her. I found her grinning guiltily while the boy sobbed on the floor beside her. Before I
could intervene, a classmate of hers consoled the boy and invited him to play, all while ignoring
her. As she observed her classmates interacting in this wholesome, benevolent manner, she was
being socialized to react correctly to her emotions. Her actions did not receive the desired result, so
she adjusted until they fell

Summary Of Malcolm Gladwell s Outliers
In the number one national bestseller, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell presents what he considers to
be the formula to success. In contrast to his theories of success, Ms. Michiko Kakutani calls his
book clumsy and weak and claims it doesn t present an idea of success that appeals to everyone. I
agree with Michiko Kakutani; her statements seemed very accurate, strong, and detailed. Malcolm
Gladwells book was chock full of generalizations that were made based on one particular group or
person. She points out all the flaws and poorly reasoned anecdotes that were in Gladwell s Story of
Success. In the first chapter, Gladwell tells us this book is about extraordinary men and women, but
that simply isn t true. After reading the entire book,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ms. Kakutani stresses how Gladwell tries to extrapolate his observations into hypotheses about
success that applies to everyone. This is yet another one of Gladwell s mistakes, because these
hypotheses that were made, rely solely on suggestion. He says that everyone with successful
grandparents end up successful, but I strongly disagree. Every person with hard working and
successful grandparents do not end up successful, but there are also many people are successful
without even meeting their grandparents. The trait of being a hard worker could rarely be
factor for success if your grandparents were deceased before you were born. The statement he
made is a big stretch that simply can t be applied to everyone. Throughout the second chapter in
Malcolm Gladwell s book, he reiterated this idea of a 10,000 Hour Rule , that all artists and
professionals must practice at least ten thousand hours in order to be great, but he failed to add
some form of disclaimer. Gladwell left out the portion of artists with well over ten thousand hours
of practice, who still haven t mastered their craft. For example, there are many comedians who
have been cracking jokes their whole life, but still lack the sense of professionalism that the more
renowned comedians share. Gladwell uses musicians as his subject when he says, ...none of
them...floated effortlessly to the top by practicing a fraction of the time... , but why doesn t he use
other forms of activities

Battle Of New Orleans Research Paper
Battle of New Orleans
The Battle of New Orleans is claimed to be most outstanding United States victory of the War of
1812. Even though the Battle of New Orleans took place after the Treaty of Ghent, which was
signed by both British and American men to declare the War of 1812 over, it was actually the last
event of the War of 1812. British began planning an attack right after against the Americans with
hopes as one last attempt to overthrow Americans before the treaty was finalized and after the
Americans heard a word of planned attack they began defensive preparation. The Battle of New
Orleans was an American victory which was led by President Andrew Jackson against the British
which was led by General Packenham.
The Battle of New Orleans was not one single fight but many starting on December 24th, 1814

Even though the Treaty of Ghent did not reach word of the American people until news of the
Battle of New Orleans had along taken place, it still was a good thing to have happened. Minus
the few causalities and wounded, it gave American people something to cheer and be hopeful
about after the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans stopped the British from trying to take
control of American soil and also gave Americans an overall win as an advantage. The Battle of
New Orleans was also the first battle to have let color men fight on both sides. This is
extraordinary in that it allowed free color men to serve and after the battle the men were honored
for their bravery in the war. This was an overall American victory due to the fact that it started
treating color men like everyone else. This battle was not a race issue but just an issue of the
British wanting control of trade routes over Americans. The Battle of New Orleans was an
outstanding end to the War of

Themes of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure Revealed in...
Themes of Shakespeare s Measure for Measure Revealed in Angelo s Soliloquies
Angelo s soliloquies (2.2.161 186; 2.4.1 30) express themes of the tragicomic form, grace and
nature, development of self knowledge, justice and mercy, and creation and death as aspects of
Angelo s character.
By the theme of the tragicomic form I mean that which qualified extremes and promoted a balanced
condition of mind [...] It employed a mixed style, mixed action, and mixed characters passing
from side to side, it works amongst contraries, sweetly tempering their composition . (Guarini s
Compendio della Poesia Tragicomica (1601) cited in Lever lxi lxii). I take Measure for Measure s

He says as much in his first soliloquy he rots rather than blooms under virtuous influence (2.2.164
167). The crux of Angelo s soliloquy is Most dangerous / Is that temptation that doth goad us on
/ To sin in loving virtue (2.2.180 182). This equivocation signifies Angelo s transition from
condemning to embracing his love. Unused to thinking of love (of a novice) as anything other than
foul, Angelo acts accordingly. Later he laments forgetting his grace (4.4.31).
There are also shades of the theme of justice and mercy (Lever lxiii) in Angelo s soliloquies. To this
point Angelo has maintained a precisionist, inhuman (merciless) approach to law enforcement. To
this point two characters have asked him to consider that he might behave as Claudio had in similar
circumstances. In lines 2.2.174 176 he at last entertains that argument. Angelo becomes an example
of a legalistic or spiritual concept encountering interference from the realities of human existence
within a character. Lines 2.4.7 9, The state, whereon I studied, [...] also signify movement to a
middle way in his approach to law.
The theme creation and death (Lever lxxxiii) surfaces too. Angelo has condemned a man to die for
a creative act, an act Angelo has interpreted to be destructive. Not only is Angelo feeling the
stirrings that lead to procreation, his language uses the image of pregnancy, [...] the strong and
swelling evil / Of

Bearded Hercules
Throughout history, many civilizations have risen and fallen carrying along with them their
perspectives and beliefs manifested in works of art. All civilizations have erected monuments to not
only prove they existed, but because they believed they would remain permanently. The Ancient
Greeks were no different, portraying their ideal standards of beauty and proportion into their
sculptures. Their ideal perception of adulation represented the highest form of perfection,
comparable to the infinite impeccability of their gods and goddesses ( ). Evidently, the Ancient
Greeksideals served as a prerequisite that transcended into the ideals of their successors, the Ancient
Romans. The Marble Statue of a Bearded Hercules exemplifies the emergence of unique Roman
standards intertwined with the praised idealism of the Ancient Greeks.
The Romans were heavily influenced by the Greeks, as Greek art was engrossed by the Romans
resulting in the development of new standards of beauty and proportion, from creating numerous
copies of Greek sculptures. The Marble Statue of a Bearded Hercules, dating back to 68 98 A.D., is

My Son, My Executioner Essay
My Son, My Executioner
In the Donald Hall poem, My Son, My Executioner, Hall depicted a father who has grown old,
holding their young child in their arms. Hall portrayed strong imagery of a fatherly figure giving
up everything to care for his young child. The tone of the poem is both happy and dark. Hall s
theme showed that once a person has a child, the parent s life is completely changed. My Son, My
Executioner is a very well written poem with a deep, true meaning that readers could relate to. The
imagery helps Hall depict a father caring for their young child. Hall is first telling the reader that the

This poem could either be taken in a happy tone or a dark tone. The main theme Hall is trying to
express is that once a person has a child, their lives are changed forever. In the first line, My son,
my executioner, is saying that once a child comes into the world, in a sense the parent s life is
taken away. Yet as morbid as that sounds, the parent s life is made eternal through their child
forever. The father knows his time is now focused on his son. There is a reversal of roles, as the
child gets bigger and stronger, the father gets weaker and will die. Sweet death, small son, our
instrument/of immortality. Another problem was that the parents had their child young. That
day the child was born, their lives were changed and it will never be the same again. We twenty
five and twenty two. In conclusion, Donald Hall portrays a father who has grown old, holding
their young child in their arms. . The way Hall used imagery, showed the reader a fatherly figure
that gives up everything to care for his son. The tone of the poem was important because it let the
reader know that the poem could be seen as happy or dark. The theme showed the readers that
once they have a child, their lives are changed forever. My Son, My Executioner is a very well

The Myth Of Robber Barons
The Myth of Robber Barons discusses some of the major entrepreneurs in of the United States
from 1850 to 1910. Burton Folsom also discusses these entrepreneur s key role in their fields and
the whole economy of the United States. The entrepreneurs discussed are Commodore Vanderbilt,
James J. Hill, The Scranton s Group, Charles Schwab, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Mellon.
We know these men as Robber Barons, but Folsom argues that these entrepreneurs succeeded by
producing quality product and service at a competitive price. He compares so called Robber Barons
to the political entrepreneurs who rely heavily on government subsidy and make no improvement.

Market entrepreneurs, by contrast, often made decisive and unpredictable contributions to
American economic development. Vanderbilt started off by carrying customers from the Elizabeth
to New York in low costs. He became famous because of his low fares and cunning personality. A

Gibbons vs Ogden trial, which stated that only federal government could regulate interstate
commerce not the states. Vanderbilt eventually beat Fulton by lowering rates to record numbers,
earning reputation, and investing in new technology and lookout for the future. Later in the
chapter, Folsom introduces William Walker who hurt Vanderbilt business form the central
America by overthrowing the government in Nicaragua. Vanderbilt had already built a canal
through Nicaragua for his ships rather than going from Panama Canal to lower the rates. But,
Walker shipped an army to Nicaragua and made himself president and denied Vanderbilt rights to
the canal, which he helped to build. This led Vanderbilt to dabble a bit into politics and later
overthrew Walker but there was no avail because Walker s coup had already destroyed the canal.

Pros And Cons Of Political Parties
A Political Party is defined as a formal coalition of interests joined together to get their candidates
for public office elected under a common label and agenda. Political Parties, over time, have
seemed to do more harm than good for our nation. The founders of America never even intended
for this nation to be separated into two different Political Parties. There is nothing which I dread so
much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and
concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded
as the greatest political evil under our Constitution. John Adams, The Works Of John Adams,
Second President Of The United States. Political Parties were never intended to be an exercised idea
in the American government. Our founding fathers had emphasized their hatred for the division of

The question to behold is, are Political Parties really representing who the American voters are?
People oftentimes express that the people of their own political parties are not really giving a
good image for the people of their own party. Hillary Clinton was supposed to represent the
Democratic party for the 2017 election. With being such an admirable figure any mistake can be
taken and a sign of being a liar, deceptive, and manipulative. Those who support her and her
Political Party are perceived to be a lying, deceptive, manipulator, but that does not mean that her
followers are. The same concept can be applied to Trump, oftentimes he is seen to have no filter,
as a racist, and even sexist as well, and again the same thing can be said about Trump; just because

Persuasive Essay On Texting While Driving
Most people believe that only texting is harmful while driving, but talking on the phone may be
just as harmful. While most believe that talking on a cellular device is harmless, it is in fact, a
distraction. The roads would be a much safer place for drivers if the amount of distractions were
limited.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that there are several reasons why
talking on the phone while driving should be illegal in all states. One of these reasons is that car
accidents are one of the most prevalent causes of death in the United States; and distraction is the
number one cause of car accidents (Currin). Many people think that as long as you talk on the
phone using a hands free device, it is perfectly safe. While many people agree with this, that is not
the case. It is not the act of driving with only one hand that is the problem, but it is that the driver
must multitask when processing the information that the caller is saying. This is especially a
concern with emotional conversations (Svenson and Patten 182).
Some drivers believe that as long as you keep your eyes on the road, it is fine to answer and
make phone calls while driving. This point is not valid, because distraction can be anything
averting concentration, not just looking away from the path of travel (Svenson and Patten 182).
Drivers must become more aware of this problem, especially in our advancing technological age.
Many people may suggest that conversing with a passenger poses the same risks as talking on
the phone. This is a valid point, but David Strayer, a cognitive scientist at the University of Utah,
agues that having a passenger in the vehicle actually promotes safer driving since there are four
eyes on the road instead of only two. Adams writes that Strayer says that passengers tend to stop
talking when the demands of driving increase. The helpfulness of having another set of eyes in the
vehicle with the driver does not carry over with teenaged driving (Adams).
Some might say that as long as the person operating the vehicle is a good driver, his driving skills
should not be affected by talking on the phone while driving. Contrary to popular belief, talking on
the phone while driving, even with a

Nike Vertical Integration Paper
Nike uses vertical integration strategy which is a form of a relationship oriented approach in
coming up with effective and efficient ways of managing its supply chain. This is achieved
through forming alliances and relationships rather than using pricing strategy with an aim of
purchasing stuff as cheap as possible (Frisch, 2008). The company has managed to maintain its
relationship with contract manufacturers for its foot ware by having different types of suppliers.
The strategy is used in pricing its commodities where they have participants at different channel
levels so that they could control costs and influence practices of pricing. For example, there are

turnovers because of his 14 interceptions and losing eight fumbles. In comparison, Winston did the
worst during his last season with the Seminoles as among the 39 FBS quarterbacks that passed
over 3,000 yards and still managed to take the team to the playoffs. As a quarterback, Winston
counted on his teammates like returning running back Dalvin Cook to assist in making great plays

Since these may be complimentary, the combined organization may have the capacity to catch a
larger number of customers than they would as individual. For instance, the consequence of
merging two travel organizations permits a more prominent scope of alternatives to be introduced
to the buyer at the purpose of offer.
3)Penetration of market: By merging, the new organization is supposedly furnished with access to
more clients. This is actual if the individual organizations had been obviously fruitful in discrete
markets, instead of generally just as contending in the same one.
4)Economics of scales: Firms that can exploit a scope of economies of scale, for example, cost

accessible to firms that merger and are advantages connected with utilizing the settled resources of
one firm to create yield for the other firm. A merger empowers the firm to be more beneficial and

Informative Speech About Bacteria
It was fall 1972 when Professor clark had discovered the bacteria. Professor Clark thought he
ruled the world for what he had discovered but he was soon going to learn what dark secrets the
government have been hiding from their fellow citizens. Okay class have a seat please, today
we are going to be going over something fascinating. Today we will be going over bacteria! If I
Must remind you guy s, a man from the government will be coming in to see what I Have
discovered so please show him respect and show me attention. (Knocking on the door) Oh!
Gracie would you get that please. Class I Would like to introduce you to our guest, Mr. Miller.
Okay shall we get started! First I Would like to go over what I Have discovered is the most
remarkable thing anyone has possibly came across and i m honored to be presenting this to you.
What I Have found is something called bacteria, not the good kind but the kind used in wars and
deadly attacks. Sadly we can t see it with the human eye but thanks to technology we have
microscopes, so please line up and one at a time look through the tube and observe the bacteria.
Now what you are looking at is one of the most deadly bacteria currently known to man
(Burkholderia cepacia) if this was to leave the container and accidentally it could sink in your skin
and get in your blood vessels spreading throughout your body then once it reaches the heart instant
death will occur. Mr.miller would you like to take a look? Why yes I Would thank you

The Stereotypes Of Dishonesty And Flawless Relationships
Growing up, many have experienced that flawless relationship, whether it involves being a
contributor to one or just simply examining others. Watching movies, such as The Notebook, gave
us such extreme hopes as to what to expect when it came time for dating to become a part of our
lives. Sadly, once that time had arrived, dating made an unexpected turn for the worst.
Relationships tend to be dishonest. Having gone through a relationship, I understand what it is like
to be involved in a relationship like so with the person I once thought I could trust. Because I was
proven wrong, involving myself in another relationship, especially this early, is going to be really
rare. Having conversed with some friends who have gone through the same instance, they say that
they will probably not jump into another one until their career is set and their life is intact. The
dishonesty is mostly associated with not being told where or who the significant other is with or
just blatantly lying about it and saying they re somewhere they aren t. That idea of dishonesty tags

Explain The Terms Metaphor And Metonymy

ESSAY
The terms metaphor and metonymy made a regular appearance in our survey of modern literary
theory. Discuss the significance that these terms assumed in the various schools of thought, and
comment on both continuities and changes within the various contexts. Do you still find the terms
useful for literary studies today?
Roman Jakobson s article Two Aspects of Language and Two Types of Aphasic Disturbances
changed dramatically the way literary critics use the terms metaphor and metonymy. Before that
article metonymy was a rhetorical trope barely distinguishable from synecdoche. Since Jakobson
introduced the dichotomy, metonymy was elevated to the status equal to metaphor, and viewed as
its contrary. Both metaphor and metonymy ceased to perform only as rhetorical tropes and became
the two principles defining relationships within language. This binary model has been developed,
applied or challenged in many studies from linguistics and rhetoric, to literary theory, film,
psychology. In this essay we will look at how the terms metaphor and metonymy were employed by
different schools ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul De Man in his article Semiology and Rhetoric explores the possibilities of metaphor and
metonymy relate to each other in a free play, not confined to their definitions. He takes a passage
from Proust s book and deconstructs the poles of the binary, proving that metaphor could be a
more powerful device than metonymy (which is the traditional view), but it is only possible with
the help of metonymic tools. The effect of this is that we no longer can have authoritative reading
as we are constantly aware that our practices of reading are not sufficient, we read with the help of
instruments the text provided

your employer/supervisor, a college or someone under your charge, also helps to identify parts
of your personal development that you may have missed or have overlooked. After all, we re
only human and humans make mistakes. Because of this, it s important to go about getting
feedback from others the right way. Walking up to a co worker and asking their opinion on your
competency might have unforeseen complications they might dislike you personally and give
you false information about your working capacity, they might lie to you to avoid hurting your
feelings or it could erupt into an argument and disrupt important work. In any case, it s necessary
to provide a platform to the recipients to conduct their feedback. An easy example is to have a
general feedback day or meeting for the entire work force or work group, where everyone comes
together and gives each other constructive criticism in a relaxed and friendly demeanor. Hosting
a one on one, private feedback meetings is another good idea that allows for a greater analysis of
your competency. BY talking to each person individually, you reduces any stress or anxiety the
person may have and gives them the confidence to speak their mind clearly. It s important to

to take negative feedback, but both are required for you to truly improve, so it is necessary to

that you think along that line. This is also a good chance to give the individual some feedback

The Theme Of Education In The Lesson By Toni Bambara
In regard to the topic of privilege, the short story The Lesson by Toni Bambara stresses that
education is a means to overcome poverty. This thematic statement is furthered constantly in the
text by literary elements such as setting, characterization and point of view. First, is the
characterization of Miss Moore. Throughout the story, Miss Moore demonstrates an interesting
comparison to the children. In many ways, she provides a contrast to them, which is shown
immediately in her introduction, ...this lady moved on our block with nappy hair, and proper
speech, and no makeup. And quite naturally, we laughed at her... Miss Moore was her name. The
only woman on the block with no first name . Furthermore, Miss Moore s obvious dedication
and value for education is somewhat unaligned with the children s own views about education.
Nonetheless, she aims to use the children s disadvantaged lives in order to prove to them the
value of education, which remains a central theme throughout the story. However, she is able to
accomplish this because of a few key commonalities between herself and the children. They do,
after all live in the same neighborhood, and, more poignantly, both face challenges associated
with being black in America. This point brings us to the next major literary element of the story:
setting. Published in 1972, it can be inferred that The Lesson takes place in this same era. The
1970 s provided a key area of public and societal reform after the American Civil

Glaucon s View Of Justice
Justice is a concept that has been debated for thousands of years, from the Greeks to modern
western society. Most people strive for justice, yet most would disagree with the answer of what is
justice and how do we achieve it. Not only do proponents of justice need to offer clarification, they
must also find the most foundational question in ethics, is it good in itself or is it a means for other
things only. Glaucon argues that justiceis not intrinsic, rather we only care about justice because it
leads to a better life, in order to prolong the debate with Socrates; Socrates would tell you that
justice is virtuous as an end not as a means. This is the dilemma brought up in The Republic: Book
II, in which Glaucon truly wanted Socrates to prove... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without justice the city crumbles is unhealthy, and that is how he declares justice being
paramount to Glaucon and the other friends. Virtue to Socrates is the only way to achieve
eudaimonia, Greek for happiness, good fortune, flourishing, and more. And I can concur with
that, what I have a problem with is his system of government, his way of achieving justice on a
city scale, and thus you as an individual should strive for it. It does not disprove justice, rather we
should look to improve the argument, much like other religious philosophers have tried to
improve Ansam s ontological argument. Socrates assumes that people know and naturally do
what they should do for the rest of their lives. People almost never know what they actually want
to do, as we see college students switch their majors around a lot, thus breaking the social rules of
Socrates s ideal city, crumbling the sociometric classes. Enough people will not be happy with such
rules, creating an uproar big enough to destroy the city s system. Destroying the city s system
would by definition destroy the city, which means that it will not be a just city, nor a city at all.

that you must have justice in the ideal city to

Chemical Insecticides Or Utilitarianism
Chemical Insecticides or Utilitarianism
Harmful chemicals have been used throughout time to kill off insects and various plagues that
have been considered harmful to the environment. Many have questioned how helpful they
really are to our environment. Pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides have proven to be more
detrimental to humans, plants, and animals than was ever expected. The use these chemicals
has proven to be more costly than beneficial. The use of chemicals has failed to take many
ethical values into consideration. One that I will discuss today is the ethic of Utilitarianism.
Utilitarianism s claim the purpose of morality is to make the world a better place (Ethics S14).
If utilitarianism was practiced more than we wouldn t have such a big problem with the use of
chemical pesticides. I will start by stating a crucial fact that has changes the life of nature as it
was once known. Since the mid 1940 s over 200 basic chemicals have been created for the use in
killing insects, weeds, rodents, and other organisms (Carson 43). The use of these chemicals have
spread quickly. One of these chemical pesticides is dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, better known
as DDT. DDT was first discovered in 1874 and used during WWII, to kill lice. After being used
during the war it began to be used in the agricultural world as an insecticide. The problem with this
was that although the agriculture industry was benefiting, it was benefitting at a cost to the
environment.

Victorian Norms In Bram Stoker
Developing the inside versus outside tensions between England and Eastern Europe, Bram Stoker
challenges Victorian social norms. This tension is particularly evident when understanding the
spread of vampirism to be an invasion of England. Although this invasion is fantastical and not
realistic, its targets the legitimate Victorian fear of invasion. As an island nation close to other
significant European powers, England was able to escape many years of land invasions, but
always had to remain wary of the threat of a naval invasion. This fear of invasion is realized when
Draculalaunches a small scale invasion of England. He enters by boat and proceeds to terrorize
England through its women. This idea of subliminally addressing the fears and desires of England
is effective because Stoker masks them in fantasy. Furthermore, this is effective because
individuals in a culture act out certain unconscious or repressed needs, or express in an overt and
symbolic fashion certain latent motives which they must give expression to, but cannot face
openly (Cawelti, 11). Because this novel is a fantasy, Stoker is able to challenge the social norms
of the period within a popular work. Therefore, aided by fantasy, Bram Stokeruses the contrast
between Eastern and Western cultures to challenge Victorian ideals and reveal the changing nature
of gender roles and sexuality in British society.
The commentary on Victorian ideals stems from the differences between England and Transylvania.
While England was characterized by Protestantism, education, technological innovation, and
Victorian culture, Transylvania was entirely different with a dated technology and a balance
between Catholicism and more superstitious beliefs. These distinctly different cultures initially
collide as Harker travels to visit Count Dracula. As Harker moves further to the East, the mood
shifts from unfamiliarity to more evil and depressive. This is evident as he describes the darkness
of his surroundings as the road was cut through the pine woods that seemed in the darkness to be
closing down us, great masses of greyness produced a peculiarly weird and solemn effect (Stoker,
9). This unfamiliarity and anxiety in Harker illustrates that he is entirely

Sexual Promiscuity During The Cold War
Another example that corroborate to the message of domesticity during the Cold War was nuclear
annihilation and the nuclear containment culture. The Red Scare fostered a climate of fear and
repression. It was believed by the American people that communists taught children to betray their
parents; mannish women mocked the ideals of marriage and motherhood. In addition to this, with
the looming threat of nuclear annihilation increased paranoia and propaganda that led to the linking
of perversion to national weakness. While the men defend the front lines of our country, it was the
women s job to defend the frontline of the home. The American housewife played a important role
in ensuring strong and stable family relationships in order to defend against political or sexual

The traditional family became a symbolism of the American Dream. Being a housewife become a
marker of wealth and ultimately a prosperous capitalist society. However, with this belief came
increased rigid gender roles which discourage women from pursing professional career. Women
who challenged these traditional gender roles placed the nation security at risk because it would
lead them to sexual promiscuity. Despite this, many women did not leave the labor force. With the
influx of women into the workforce, many fears such as sexual promiscuity, neglected children
and women violating biological nature emerged. Furthermore, sex was was out of control, their
was widespread premarital intercourse, homosexual activities and extramarital sex among

own king (l.ii.344 345). Gonzalo also has a moment where he imagines his own utopian society
on the island (11.i.148 156). Stephano has his own vision of what he wants too, Monster, I will
kill this man. His daughter and I will be King and Queen.. And Trinculo and thyself shall be my
viceroys (iii.ii.101 103). Prospero, the main character, has a similar mindset to a colonist
because although he ended up on the island accidentally, he still acts as superior to the
inhabitants and he sees the island as something he can make profit from. Prospero probably
wouldn t fit the title of an imperialist invader because he came to the island as a fugitive and did
not necessarily start a war with the inhabitants. Nonetheless he wants to restore his dukedom by
manipulating people around him. He does this to his daughter Miranda by keeping her naive
and innocent. He also conjures up Ferdinand, who becomes Miranda s love interest, and then
proceeds to enslave him also. Prospero uses Ariel to carry out most of his plans by convincing
Ariel he will soon be free if he keeps obeying Prospero with willingness and enthusiasm. Prospero
uses mostly guilt and fear to keep his slaves along side with him. He threatens Caliban in Act 1

Assignment 2: In recent time, outward FDI has been significantly increased from China and India.
Discuss the factors responsible for such a growth. Do you think IB theories (OLI and IDP)
adequately explain the reasons for outward FDI. Introduction In the recent time, significant rise of
outward foreign direct investment (FDI) was witnessed from developing countries like China and
India. The Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD) defines FDI as an
investment that reflects the objective of establishing a lasting interest or long term relationship by a
resident enterprise in one economy (direct investor) in an enterprise (direct investment enterprise)

India has increasing GDP growth from 2008 2009 in terms of GDP real growth rate [2008 6.2%,
2009 6.8% and 2010 10.4%] and GDP per capita (PPP) [2008 $3000, 2009 $3200, 2010 $3500]
(CIA, 2011). Hong (2010) also stated that India s pre 1990 OFDI period was limited due to
government restrictive policies like Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act and
Foreign Exchange Regulation Act but after 1991 to present time, OFDI was expanded into
developed region as economic liberalisation process during the 1990s provided strong impetus
for firms to move abroad leading a turning point making OFDI as preferred strategy for firm s
survival (Figure 1: China and India s OFDI). This paper will examined the factors that contribute
to outward FDI ( OFDI) of China and India and then whether International Business theories like
Dunning s eclectic Paradigm OLI model and Investment development path (IDP) are adequate to
explain the reasons for the growth of OFDI. International business theories like Dunning s eclectic
Paradigm OLI model which are sets of advantages that either encourages or discourages a firm
from undertaking foreign activities and becoming an multinational firm (MNE). OLI model
consists of O = Ownership advantages or firm specific advantages, L = Location advantages or
country specific advantages, and I = Internalization advantages or transaction costs advantages.
Besides OLI model, theories like investment development path (IDP) can also

George Frederic Handel
George Frederic Handel, one of the greatest composers of the late baroque period. He was born

a genius musician. When Frederic was only eleven, he was already playing a pipe organ. He also
learned to play the violin, clavichord, harpsichord, and oboe. His father realized that his son was a

The similarities are that both opera and oratorio have soloists, ensemble, distinguishable
characters, arias, and choirs. Most of the arias in opera are very similar in musical style, form,
nature of the musical ideas, and technique of expressing affects to the arias in oratorios. Handel s
arias in operas have strictly Da Capo structure which makes them longer because of repeating.
Since many people didn t like the idea of using of Da Capo and the fact that after the character is
done singing exited the stage, both of these things were abandoned. Today arias are in strophic
form as in ballad opera. One more big similarity between opera and oratorio is that they both
have librettos and recitatives that could be performed not only by a male, but by a female as well.
Handel also preferred to write operas and two oratorios in Italian

How Did Ww1 Affect Australia s Economy
The great impact of changes in Australia s economy during world war one caused a great mix of
emotions. In the effect of Australia s government cancelling existing trade agreements with
Germany and Austria Hungary one of the earliest impacts of the war started to occur. The life of
an Australian worker became very difficult as Australian firms in industries such as steel making
and pharmaceuticals were found having to take up contracts German rivals previously been
filled and fortunes were suddenly available to firms such as BHP and Nicholas. A series of War
loans and then Peace loans were used by the common wealth to finance the war. As men had gone
into war, many jobs needed workers. The largest single employer of women in 1918 was the
munition factories due to the high demand for weapons. Though there was initial resistance to
hiring women for what was seen as men s work , in 1916 there was an introduction of conscription
made need for women workers urgent. The government began coordinating the... Show more

women and children were both banned from previously had a large gap left in the workforce.
Factories were made to charge child labour laws, through the war these laws were suddenly gone
leaving factories to hire children and women. Children, like women, worked on ammunition
factories. With the war becoming very popular, teens and adolescents lied about their age and went
into the military. Many young men/ boys fought in the war. Their dedication helped to change the
tide of the war in the direction of the American allies along with the support of the men. Another

  • 2. Examples Of Exegetical Fallacies Your post on Exegetical Fallacies was insightful and thought provoking. Before learning Greek, hearing preachers use Greek words throughout their sermons fascinated me, and that pushed me to do more research and learn. As time moved on, I felt inclined to include Greek in my sermons especially after Greek I. It seemed easy to research a passage, throw out a few Greek words, and move on. After studying Greek further, I discovered that most preachers were misinterpreting and misapplying Greek words within their sermons. I have to agree that often times, even now; I may find myself guilty of some of Carson s fallacies. Your example of the disciples and apostles misinterpretation shows how important it is to determine the true meaning in the correct ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Is The Mood Of The Song Here There And Everywhere By John... Yesterday. Hey Jude. Let It Be. Those are the songs that come to mind when thinking of Paul McCartney s masterpieces with The Beatles. However, Here, There and Everywhere, a beautiful love song from the album Revolver, seems to go rather unnoticed. But one listen is all it takes to see why John Lennon called it one of his favorite songs of The Beatles. The song s seemingly simple tune and love lyrics hide subtle musical complexities that help give it a classic sound that endures through time. Here, There and Everywhere has a fairly simple form: intro, verse, bridge, verse, bridge, verse, outro. The form reflects the continual shifts in keys throughout the song from the opening key of G major, to the prevalent relative major to the parallel minor key of B flat major, to the instrumental use of the parallel g minor, and to the occasional relative e minor1. Paul opens the song with an intro section, something that not many other preceding Beatles songs possessed. This intro also commences the later key changes by shifting from the original G major key, to the B flat major key at the end of the two lines. The intro is followed by a series of verses and bridges. The verses are generally in the key of G major, with short occasional... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because the song is in keys that are kind the ears and provides harmonies and melodies that yield a rich yet calming sound, just the melody alone can withstand the test of time. The lyrics read like a simple love poem and love ballads hardly change throughout time. Listening to this during the 1960s and listening to it now (purely musically, not influentially) will provide similar feelings of love and devotion. It really is no wonder why it is a favorite among Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Martin. I m sure I m not the only who feels the need to listen to this masterpiece here, there, and ... • 4. Dehumanization And Oppression In Elie Wiesel s Novel Night In the novel Night, the author and protagonist, Elie, goes through change because of dehumanization and oppression. During World War II, Adolf Hitler wanted to abolish all Jews from society by murdering and putting them in concentration camps, an event known as the Holocaust. These camps held millions of Jews that were treated like dehumanized animals by the German police. Night is a novel written about the experiences about a boy, Elie Wiesel, who lived through the holocaust. He wrote Night in order to give a voice to those that were unable to do so of the events in the concentration camps. In Night, Elie Wiesel s faith was strong in the beginning of the novel, and started to decrease during his time at the concentration camp, and completely disappeared by the end of the Holocaust. In the beginning of the story Elie s Jewish faith was strong and devoted that he wanted to become more knowledgeable and pursue a career in it. In Night, Elie states, He wanted to drive the idea that studying Kabbalahfrom my mind... I succeeded on my own in finding a master for myself... (Wiesel 4). The quote explains that even though Elie s father was against Elie studying Kabbalah, he decided to find himself someone to teach him about his faith. Elie was devoted to his faith that he diobeyed his father s request and found himself a mentor. Additionally, Elie states, and Moishe the Beadle, the poorest of the poor of Sighet, spoke to me for hours on end about the Kabbalah s revelations and its mysteries.Together we would would read...not to learn it by heart but to discover within the essence of divinity (Wiesel 5). Elie and Moishe the Beadle, Elie s new mentor, read the Zohar together and talked about the meaning of each verse to each other for long periods of time. Once he had found his mentor, Elie spent most of his time with Moishe in order to talk about the Kabbalah faith and get a better understanding of what his faith is asking of him for any situation they may come across. The oppression of the Holocaust and being in the concentration camps led Elie s faith in God to decrease. Elie states, Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Focus Group Discussion Objective The main objective of this focus group discussion was to get information from human resource representatives, as well as a few mangers of surrounding companies about their feeling and attitudes toward MBA programs, North Dakota State University s program specifically. Our discussion focused on four main aspects of MBA programs: employer sponsored MBA programs, attitudes toward MBA programs, the pros and cons of the MBA program at North DakotaState University, and the human resource representatives thoughts on MBA employees. The information collected from the discussion will be used to encompass MBA education in the greater Fargo Moorhead area. Method and Procedure The team brainstormed a list of questions ... To make conversations more personal, the moderator had to address some more sensitive subjects that would in turn make people more shy to answer, but after a few individuals would give answers, other would bring it back to them and answer the question fully. Also, when you addressed an individual by name, it make the conversation more relatable and would result in improvement participation rates and positively affect quality of data gathering. What We Would Do Differently If we could do this focus group again, we would try and include a larger collection of participants. This improvement would allow us to hear more insights, and give our group a wider variety of responses. A smaller sized group may be more personal, but doesn t offer as much depth as a slightly larger size. Additionally, something that would help is finding ways to get people to participate more during the focus group. Not everyone will have as much experience as the next person, but it s still important to hear their thoughts and opinions. The more that people participate, the better our findings will ... Though the child compromises aspects of their original, uncultured persona, the trade off is for the better: a needy child could attend school and gain independence, or an ornery toddler could learn the balance of actions and consequences through time outs. From what I have observed, effective socializationrequires that the child must primarily learn from others of the same general status and age, as well as be able to find their niche within the whole group to specialize their methods and actions accordingly. I personally witnessed socialization in action and how it may initially cause rifts within a child s psyche as they find their niche in their society. For example, last year I interned at a women s substance abuse rehabilitation center, concentrating on the resident children and their resulting behavioral tendencies. There was one 5 year old girl who I bonded notably closer to than all of the other kids. During behavioral therapy sessions, I discovered that exposure to alcohol in utero had led to her developing various emotional and attachment disorders. Her natural reaction to triggering situations or conflict was to scream and whine relentlessly until she got her way, so in therapy she was taught self soothing methods and practiced identifying her emotions in order to remedy her behavior. During counseling, she made tremendous progress, quickly seeming to understand the emotional concepts presented to her. However, when the morning therapy sessions were done, she would go to preschool and act out as if she learned nothing. One day, I was called into her classroom because she had allegedly struck a classmate after he stole a toy from her. I found her grinning guiltily while the boy sobbed on the floor beside her. Before I could intervene, a classmate of hers consoled the boy and invited him to play, all while ignoring her. As she observed her classmates interacting in this wholesome, benevolent manner, she was being socialized to react correctly to her emotions. Her actions did not receive the desired result, so she adjusted until they fell ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Summary Of Malcolm Gladwell s Outliers In the number one national bestseller, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell presents what he considers to be the formula to success. In contrast to his theories of success, Ms. Michiko Kakutani calls his book clumsy and weak and claims it doesn t present an idea of success that appeals to everyone. I agree with Michiko Kakutani; her statements seemed very accurate, strong, and detailed. Malcolm Gladwells book was chock full of generalizations that were made based on one particular group or person. She points out all the flaws and poorly reasoned anecdotes that were in Gladwell s Story of Success. In the first chapter, Gladwell tells us this book is about extraordinary men and women, but that simply isn t true. After reading the entire book,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ms. Kakutani stresses how Gladwell tries to extrapolate his observations into hypotheses about success that applies to everyone. This is yet another one of Gladwell s mistakes, because these hypotheses that were made, rely solely on suggestion. He says that everyone with successful grandparents end up successful, but I strongly disagree. Every person with hard working and successful grandparents do not end up successful, but there are also many people are successful without even meeting their grandparents. The trait of being a hard worker could rarely be factor for success if your grandparents were deceased before you were born. The statement he made is a big stretch that simply can t be applied to everyone. Throughout the second chapter in Malcolm Gladwell s book, he reiterated this idea of a 10,000 Hour Rule , that all artists and professionals must practice at least ten thousand hours in order to be great, but he failed to add some form of disclaimer. Gladwell left out the portion of artists with well over ten thousand hours of practice, who still haven t mastered their craft. For example, there are many comedians who have been cracking jokes their whole life, but still lack the sense of professionalism that the more renowned comedians share. Gladwell uses musicians as his subject when he says, ...none of them...floated effortlessly to the top by practicing a fraction of the time... , but why doesn t he use other forms of activities ... Themes of Shakespeare s Measure for Measure Revealed in Angelo s Soliloquies Angelo s soliloquies (2.2.161 186; 2.4.1 30) express themes of the tragicomic form, grace and nature, development of self knowledge, justice and mercy, and creation and death as aspects of Angelo s character. This equivocation signifies Angelo s transition from condemning to embracing his love. Unused to thinking of love (of a novice) as anything other than foul, Angelo acts accordingly. Later he laments forgetting his grace (4.4.31). There are also shades of the theme of justice and mercy (Lever lxiii) in Angelo s soliloquies. To this point Angelo has maintained a precisionist, inhuman (merciless) approach to law enforcement. To this point two characters have asked him to consider that he might behave as Claudio had in similar circumstances. In lines 2.2.174 176 he at last entertains that argument. This poem could either be taken in a happy tone or a dark tone. The main theme Hall is trying to express is that once a person has a child, their lives are changed forever. In the first line, My son, my executioner, is saying that once a child comes into the world, in a sense the parent s life is taken away. Yet as morbid as that sounds, the parent s life is made eternal through their child forever. The father knows his time is now focused on his son. There is a reversal of roles, as the child gets bigger and stronger, the father gets weaker and will die. Sweet death, small son, our instrument/of immortality. Another problem was that the parents had their child young. That day the child was born, their lives were changed and it will never be the same again. We twenty five and twenty two. In conclusion, Donald Hall portrays a father who has grown old, holding their young child in their arms. . • 16. Persuasive Essay On Texting While Driving Most people believe that only texting is harmful while driving, but talking on the phone may be just as harmful. While most believe that talking on a cellular device is harmless, it is in fact, a distraction. The roads would be a much safer place for drivers if the amount of distractions were limited. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that there are several reasons why talking on the phone while driving should be illegal in all states. One of these reasons is that car accidents are one of the most prevalent causes of death in the United States; and distraction is the number one cause of car accidents (Currin). Many people think that as long as you talk on the phone using a hands free device, it is perfectly safe. While many people agree with this, that is not the case. It is not the act of driving with only one hand that is the problem, but it is that the driver must multitask when processing the information that the caller is saying. This is especially a concern with emotional conversations (Svenson and Patten 182). Some drivers believe that as long as you keep your eyes on the road, it is fine to answer and make phone calls while driving. This point is not valid, because distraction can be anything averting concentration, not just looking away from the path of travel (Svenson and Patten 182). Drivers must become more aware of this problem, especially in our advancing technological age. Many people may suggest that conversing with a passenger poses the same risks as talking on the phone. This is a valid point, but David Strayer, a cognitive scientist at the University of Utah, agues that having a passenger in the vehicle actually promotes safer driving since there are four eyes on the road instead of only two. Adams writes that Strayer says that passengers tend to stop talking when the demands of driving increase. The helpfulness of having another set of eyes in the vehicle with the driver does not carry over with teenaged driving (Adams). Some might say that as long as the person operating the vehicle is a good driver, his driving skills should not be affected by talking on the phone while driving. Contrary to popular belief, talking on the phone while driving, even with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Explain The Terms Metaphor And Metonymy Masterkolloquium Literary Theory Winter term 2014/15 Professor: Dr. Laura Bieger Student: Anna Zaburdaeva Matriculation number: 3957299 31.03.2015 ESSAY The terms metaphor and metonymy made a regular appearance in our survey of modern literary theory. Discuss the significance that these terms assumed in the various schools of thought, and comment on both continuities and changes within the various contexts. Do you still find the terms useful for literary studies today? Roman Jakobson s article Two Aspects of Language and Two Types of Aphasic Disturbances changed dramatically the way literary critics use the terms metaphor and metonymy. Before that article metonymy was a rhetorical trope barely distinguishable from synecdoche. Since Jakobson introduced the dichotomy, metonymy was elevated to the status equal to metaphor, and viewed as its contrary. Both metaphor and metonymy ceased to perform only as rhetorical tropes and became the two principles defining relationships within language. This binary model has been developed, applied or challenged in many studies from linguistics and rhetoric, to literary theory, film, psychology. It s important to mention that you take in all the feedback presented to you, positive and negative. It s never easy to take negative feedback, but both are required for you to truly improve, so it is necessary to take any negative feedback with a positive attitude. • 28. The Theme Of Education In The Lesson By Toni Bambara In regard to the topic of privilege, the short story The Lesson by Toni Bambara stresses that education is a means to overcome poverty. This thematic statement is furthered constantly in the text by literary elements such as setting, characterization and point of view. First, is the characterization of Miss Moore. Throughout the story, Miss Moore demonstrates an interesting comparison to the children. In many ways, she provides a contrast to them, which is shown immediately in her introduction, ...this lady moved on our block with nappy hair, and proper speech, and no makeup. And quite naturally, we laughed at her... Miss Moore was her name. The only woman on the block with no first name . Furthermore, Miss Moore s obvious dedication and value for education is somewhat unaligned with the children s own views about education. Nonetheless, she aims to use the children s disadvantaged lives in order to prove to them the value of education, which remains a central theme throughout the story. However, she is able to accomplish this because of a few key commonalities between herself and the children. They do, after all live in the same neighborhood, and, more poignantly, both face challenges associated with being black in America. This point brings us to the next major literary element of the story: setting. Published in 1972, it can be inferred that The Lesson takes place in this same era. Most people strive for justice, yet most would disagree with the answer of what is justice and how do we achieve it. Not only do proponents of justice need to offer clarification, they must also find the most foundational question in ethics, is it good in itself or is it a means for other things only. Glaucon argues that justiceis not intrinsic, rather we only care about justice because it leads to a better life, in order to prolong the debate with Socrates; Socrates would tell you that justice is virtuous as an end not as a means. Virtue to Socrates is the only way to achieve eudaimonia, Greek for happiness, good fortune, flourishing, and more. And I can concur with that, what I have a problem with is his system of government, his way of achieving justice on a city scale, and thus you as an individual should strive for it. It does not disprove justice, rather we should look to improve the argument, much like other religious philosophers have tried to improve Ansam s ontological argument. Socrates assumes that people know and naturally do what they should do for the rest of their lives. People almost never know what they actually want to do, as we see college students switch their majors around a lot, thus breaking the social rules of Socrates s ideal city, crumbling the sociometric classes. Enough people will not be happy with such rules, creating an uproar big enough to destroy the city s system. • 35. Victorian Norms In Bram Stoker Developing the inside versus outside tensions between England and Eastern Europe, Bram Stoker challenges Victorian social norms. This tension is particularly evident when understanding the spread of vampirism to be an invasion of England. Although this invasion is fantastical and not realistic, its targets the legitimate Victorian fear of invasion. As an island nation close to other significant European powers, England was able to escape many years of land invasions, but always had to remain wary of the threat of a naval invasion. This fear of invasion is realized when Draculalaunches a small scale invasion of England. He enters by boat and proceeds to terrorize England through its women. This idea of subliminally addressing the fears and desires of England is effective because Stoker masks them in fantasy. Furthermore, this is effective because individuals in a culture act out certain unconscious or repressed needs, or express in an overt and symbolic fashion certain latent motives which they must give expression to, but cannot face openly (Cawelti, 11). Because this novel is a fantasy, Stoker is able to challenge the social norms of the period within a popular work. Therefore, aided by fantasy, Bram Stokeruses the contrast between Eastern and Western cultures to challenge Victorian ideals and reveal the changing nature of gender roles and sexuality in British society. The commentary on Victorian ideals stems from the differences between England and Transylvania. While England was characterized by Protestantism, education, technological innovation, and Victorian culture, Transylvania was entirely different with a dated technology and a balance between Catholicism and more superstitious beliefs. These distinctly different cultures initially collide as Harker travels to visit Count Dracula. As Harker moves further to the East, the mood shifts from unfamiliarity to more evil and depressive. This is evident as he describes the darkness of his surroundings as the road was cut through the pine woods that seemed in the darkness to be closing down us, great masses of greyness produced a peculiarly weird and solemn effect (Stoker, 9). This unfamiliarity and anxiety in Harker illustrates that he is entirely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
