Essay about Marcus Aurelius Meditations
Kurt McGann
11/12/11
Period 1 Mythology
Hart
Personal Meditations Section 1 Stoicism: a systematic philosophy, dating from around 300 b.c.,
that held the principles of logical thought to reflect a cosmic reason instantiated in nature.
(dictionary.com). Marcus Aurelius (the author of Meditations ) was a stoic as well as an emperor.
The book he wrote was a collection of thoughts, things he advised himself to do, a piece reflecting
his stoicism, and a personal diary of sorts. The kinds of things put into this book were sometimes
crazy, sometimes contradictory, yet sometimes very true and insightful. Marcus wasn t a
professional philosopher, and this comes out in his work, but he had an interesting way of living
his life. His writings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Could you have a hot bath unless the firewood underwent some change? Could you be nourished if
the food suffered no change? Is it possible for any useful thing to be achieved without change? Do
you not see, then, that change in yourself is of the same order, and no less necessary to nature?
Many things we reap benefits from only come from the change of that item, as marcus explains.
As well as getting benefits from change, we can also get cons. If we change things, such as law
reforms, many will be mad, and just as many will be happy. So when it comes to change, it can
leave bad effects just as well as it can leave good effects.
Although Marcus has good intent, I can t head all of his advice. Marcus believed along with
other things, that self improvement was important over many a things. I agree that self
improvement is well, self improvement; and by the nature of the phrase itself is a good thing.
Marcus holds this true at a more extreme level, putting it before things that lead to your own
happiness. If today was your last day to live (assuming you are certain it is your last day to live)
and you had a responsibility to better yourself given to you before your death, Marcus would say to
go through with that responsibility, even if it resulted in your own discomfort. Marcus sees the
improvement of one s self would be more important than your own happiness, saying that dying a
better person is better than dying content. I completely

Exploring Phonemic Awareness In The Classroom
According to the article, Supporting phonemic awareness development in the classroom, educators
are displaying difficulties defining the word phonemic awareness. At times, educators would
confuse the word phonemic awareness with phonetics, phonics or auditory discrimination.
Phonemic awareness is the awareness that the speech stream consists of a sequence of sounds
specifically phonemes, the smallest unit of sound that makes a difference in communication. A
slight change of a phonemein a word can change the thought and meaning behind the sentence. To
gain a better understanding of the term phonemic awareness, the articles break it up into two
superordinate constructs: phonological awarenessand meta linguistics. Phonemic awareness is a sub
skill of the word phonological awareness, which refers to the ability to control each phoneme. Meta
linguistic refers to the thinking of one s languageand phonological awareness refers to a sensitivity
to any size unit of sound. Examples of phonological awareness are the ability to recognize rhyming
words, identify each phoneme in a word, count syllables, and separate the beginning of a word from
its ending. Overall, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness and meta linguistic awareness are
all connected to one another.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe students would gain a better understanding of phonemic awareness if teachers are using
songs, chants, and word sound games, word play, nursery or Dr. Seuss rhymes, exposure to story
books, story telling, word games, and riddles. These activities, which are engaging to students,
would build positive experiences. These instructions would also grasp the child s attention to help
him or her focus. In addition, educators must create purposeful and meaningful lesson geared
around nursery rhymes and chants etc. It has been stated that educators are teaching nursery rhymes
without knowing the true value of the

The Importance Of Public Surveillance
With the increase in public surveillance by governments and big coperations, there has grown a
need to combat it and its effects on society today. It s mainly a question of privacy to everyone,
can we really trust him, so what s Public surveillance and automated face recognition? Public
Surveillance is the monitoring of conduct, exercises, or other changing data to influence, oversee,
coordinate or protect individuals. This can incorporate the use of Closed Circuit Television
(CCTV) or capturing of electronically transmitted data, for example, through phone calls. Besides
that, it s no longer a dusk to dawn activity but 24/7. Automated Face Recognition can be best
described as the use of specialised software to identify individuals in digital images or videos
using sophisticated algorithms that are linked to databases. This kind of software is able to
compare several facial features of a person and uniquely identify them amongst a million others
accurately.
In 2013, the act of public surveillance and automated face recognition by world governments was
raised after Edward Snowden exposed the global surveillance documents. Revealing in view of
archives Snowden spilled to different media outlets set off an open deliberation about common
freedoms and the privilege to security in this Digital Age. So how is it carried out. As stated above
surveillance is mainly carried out by governments with the help of big coperations and security
organisations like the police. In a study

Primo Levi s Survival in Auschwitz Essay
Sarah Johnson
Personal Response to Survival in Auschwitz
Why is the pain of every day translated so constantly into our dreams, in the ever repeated scene
of the unlistened to story (Levi, p 60)? As I read this quote in my book, I highlighted it and wrote
in the margin foreshadowing . I feel confident that these dreams signified just that; that the author
(amongst the other survivors) would forever re live those horrors and try tell their stories...and no
one listens. The poem at the beginning of the book, Survival in Auschwitz, by Primo Levi, warns
us of just this and curses us should we fail to listen. It is imperative that we a global community
never forget and forever respect the struggle. I believe that this feeling, of sharing his ... Show more

We would think this to a reasonable response, however Levi goes on to educate otherwise. Kuhn
is out of his senses. Does he not see...Beppo, who is twenty years old and is going to the gas
chamber the day after tomorrow and knows it...? If I was God, I would spit at Kuhn s prayer
(p129). I thought that Levi s response to Kuhn s prayer was extreme at first, for isn t it
customary to give thanks for good fortune? But then as I reflected on this, Levi was absolutely
correct. How dare one man thank God for living another day when the man beside him has been
condemned? There is no rhyme or reason to it, there is no why in the Lager. It is impossible for
them at the time to understand, which is why the law of the camp was do not think . How can we
begin to fathom now the how s or why s? It doesn t make sense. Who wants to listen to a story that
doesn t make any sense and acknowledge that it could happen all over again?
Sometimes, we love to hear the story of a tragedy. For example, some of the most well liked
tragedies of all time include Gone with the Wind, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, many of
Shakespeare s plays, and a Streetcar Named Desire. These are not only stories though; they have
their sadness but throughout there is also hope and there are also morals, these are things to gain
by these stories. The story the Levi needs to share with us has no hope, it has no moral storyline

Etiological Causes Of Death s Poor Diets And Inactivity
Alice Sekimonyo
HLTH 3105
Dr Piper I have learned that etiological causes of death are not diseases but they are what make us
sick in the first place. Good examples of etiological causes of death incudes poor diets and
inactivity. An epidemiological scientific study of racism classified racismas being an etiological
factor for diseases and injuries. Since then, many others researches have been focused on its
measurement and how racism plays a major role in health disparities. Despite the lack of agreement
on the definition of racism, we cannot deny that racism is a factor that has affected the quality of
life of certain groups of people throughout the history. Oxford dictionary defines discrimination as
the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the
grounds of race, age, or sex (Oxford). Discrimination has been related to depression and anxiety
that lead to a poor general health outcome. The concept of racism can be defined as being
discriminated against because of one s skin color. In the 13th annual summer public health video
conference in minority health at the University of North Carolina Chapel, four presenters carefully
discuss about whether or not racism is really making us sick by looking at different approaches and
perspectives.
In order to understand how racism making us sick, it is important to first understands what social
determinants of health are and how they can impact our health. The WHO defines

How Different Systems Of Production And Their Contributing...
This theory is used to explain how different systems of production and their accompanying
socioeconomic institutions characterize different economic periods (Blau, 2003). The SSA theory
accepts crisis as a part of the capitalist cycle, and expects the market to collapse for new
opportunities for growth and capital gains.
At the end of the 19th century and in the early and mid 20th century, there have been three major
economic collapses that shaped the structure and operation of the USA. Reich (2009) notes the
Depression of the1890s due to the devaluation of the dollar and agricultural crisis was resolved
politically in the election of 1896 and economically by the merger wave of 1897 1903. During
this phase companies providing similar services merged to create monopoly over their lines of
production such as railroads and electricity. The Federal Reserve Systemconceptualized in 1908
was created in 1913 with the purpose of maintaining the value of American currency and controlling
bank credit. While created by the government the institution represents ideology and theory in
practice. Prior to Congress oversees the entire Federal Reserve System. The reserve must work
within the objectives established by Congress though the Federal Reserve maintains autonomy to
carry out its responsibilities without political pressure. Each of the Reserves parts the Board of
Governors, the regional Reserve Banks, and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) operates

Essay on The Allegory of the Cave
In Plato s Republic, the great philosopher describes what is needed to achieve a perfect society.
He addresses several subjects still debated in today s society, such as justice, gender roles, and
the proper form of education. He discusses these issues through his main character, Socrates.
Socrates, another well known philosopher for his time, happens upon a group of men, and what
begins as a modest question, leads into a series of debates, metaphors, and allegories. Perhaps the
most discussed allegory in today s popular culture is the Allegory of the Cave. Over the past
decade, several movies have mimicked the fantasy, the most profitable being the Matrix Trilogy.
But what makes this story so fascinating? Through it, Platoattempts to map... Show more content on

Since these are the only beings they are aware of, the sounds made by the people are also assumed
to come from the shadows. Socrates summarizes their belief system stating, such men would hold
that the truth is nothing other than the shadows of artificial things, (Book VII, 515c).
After describing the setting of the cave, Socrates asks his audience to imagine that one of the
prisoners breaks free from his bonds, and sees the fire and the statues themselves. He notes that
there would first come pain as his eyes adjust to the new light, and disbelief, as everything he had
previously thought to be real is suddenly proven artificial. However, Socrates assures his audience
that the man would eventually come to realize that the people and the fire are more real than the
shadows had ever been. He would ultimately grasp how the fire creates the shadows of the statues,
creating a mere copy of the real thing. He would then conclude that the fire and the statues are the
most real things in the world.
Though the man would then seem to be educated, Socrates takes the fantasy farther by dragging
the freed prisoner out of the cave and into the actual world. At first, the man s eyes would dart from
the brightness of the sun, and watch only shadows. Eventually, his eyes would allow him to look at
reflections and finally at the actual objects themselves. He then realizes that the trees, flowers,
houses, rocks, and animals he

The Court For Hear Death Penalty Cases
Court cases are heard on the first Monday of October all the way to late June or early July unless
otherwise decided by the court. In any court system, state or federal, certain requirements must
be met before a case can be brought before a court. (Schmidt, Shelley, Bardes 274) Two of which
are jurisdiction; the authority of the court to hear and decide a case, and standing to sue; an actual
reason to bring to court. Surprisingly the Supreme Court cases have no right of appeal. The court
tends to choose which cases it will decide and there never really is a full explanation on why one
was chosen over another.
In the article, Supreme Court to Hear Death Penalty Cases, in The New York Times; Adam Liptak
talks about two different death penalty cases to be heard in October 2016. Case number 15 8049,
Buck v. Stephens, is to be heard over whether or not race should one of the factors associated with
future dangerousness. Buck, an African Americanmale, was convicted for killing his former
girlfriend and her friend, in front of her children. Buck is being sentenced for the death penalty
because Texas law allows that if prosecutors can show that you pose a future danger to society you
may be sentenced to death. Dr. Walter Quijanos testimony in the trials sentencing phase said It s a
sad commentary that minorities, Hispanics and black people, are overrepresented in the criminal
justice system. (Liptak, NYT) In the petition for the Supreme Court to review, Bucks new lawyer

Supreme Court Case Terry v. Ohio
In the case Terry v. Ohio, the defendant John Terry argued that his Fourth Amendment right was
violated when a police officer conducted a search on him, and found a concealed weapon.
According to the officer, he had been monitoring Terry s actions prior to the stop in fear of his
safety, thus, had enough reasonable suspicionto stop and search the defendant. The Supreme Court
decided to rule in favor of the state determining that the officer may stop and frisk any suspicious
person when he feels that his safety or those of others are in danger. A Terry Stop is when the police
are allowed to stop, question and frisk someone they believe is behaving suspiciously (Larson,
2000). I am going to argue how police officers benefit from the Terry Stops even though on many
occasions they take advantage of their power and act unethical. Essentially, it is acceptable for
police officers to stop and frisk any suspicious person because it enhances the community.
Furthermore, from the law enforcement perspective, any officer of the law should have a
mandatory right to stop and search for weapons in order to protect themselves at all times. It is
obvious that society feels that they cannot trust law enforcement because minorities are more
likely to be stopped and frisk. Needless to say, it can be argued that we are one step closer to
chaos. I would consider that the Supreme Court clarify and specify a little more on the stop and
frisk law because ambiguity. In my opinion, anytime an

The Pros And Cons Of Zoos A National Disgrace
Zoos a national disgrace
Today s zoos are prime providers of entertainment, encouraging people in their thousands to come
along and experience the reality of captured animals in small, useless and uninhabitable enclosures.
The constant flash of cameras and pressing noses to the glass has become the signature of the zoos
which house these precious creatures, yet what we fail to identify is the constant horror and neglect
these poor, harmless animals are subjected to. So why should these animals be treated so cruelly?
According to a recent study, over three quarters of UK zoos fail to reach the minimum requirements
needed for the animals in their care. This shockingly high statistic shows that animals aren t
receiving the attention they deserve, with the majority being kept in dirty and unhygienic
enclosures with stagnant drinking water. Not enough is being done to replicate the natural habitat
of these animals. The climate many zoo animals are introduced to is unusual and different
compared to their natural one. This can have major consequences, including animals reacting
abnormally to this change and getting injured, even though this could have been avoided. This new
life that animals are forced to experience has in turn resulted in confusion and led to the stunted
development of youngsters. On a typical day, animals in the wild are free to roam around and carry
out basic tasks such as hunting and raising their young. This however, is the complete opposite to

The idea about a motorcycle club being featured in a book is quite fresh, since I have never read

Bon Secours reconsidered the acquisition in light of its mission statement that emphasized a caring

that Your Company is Willing to Live, Harvard Management Update, March 2002.) Typically, for a
NPO what is also important is that who writes the mission statement. Considering only senior
management or executives could be one answer, but I believe that since a NPO does most of its
operational work largely through volunteers and less through employees, it becomes important to
have representation of this constituency as well. The closer the mission statement is to what these
volunteers considers is important for their end customers, the more likely is the high quality of the
output and easier to continue recruiting volunteers. However, since many of the large NPO that
we know and will discuss in this paper have been existing for decades, it also makes sense to

CEO Compensation As Murphy (1998) rightly points out, CEO compensation has become one of
the most debated issues in the recent past. A lot of research in this field has been conducted to
determine the relationship between CEO pay levels with the corporate performance, firm size,
board vigilance, CEO s human capital, tenure age. But the results of these researches are not very
hopeful and have yielded conflicting results. This review aims at understanding these relationships

Buchholtz et al., (1998) found that compensation committee members with close relationships to
CEOs made more favourable decisions about CEOs than those with more distant relationships.
CEO s human capital, age tenure Harris and Helfat (1997) classified the human capital at three
levels a) generic skills which are transferable across industries, businesses or firms; b) industry
specific skills which can be transferred only to the firms that operate in that industry; and c) firm
specific skills which cannot be transferred outside of the firm. They investigated the relationship
between the impact of these skills on CEO compensation for both internal and external successors
and concluded that differential skill specificity is associated with pay premiums to external
successors. CEO s age tenure may play an important role but the studies conducted were unable to
test for this due to lack of relevant data (Tosi et al., 2000; Buchholtz et al., 1998).
CEO compensation: An ethical perspective According to Matsumura and Shin (2005) the ratio of
executive to worker pay has climbed from 42:1 in 1982 to 301:1 in 2003. This has invited a lot of
criticism from the shareholders, employees and has attracted the attention of restrictive regulators.
Perel (2003) tried to assess the issue by examining both the claims that CEOs are overpaid for the
value they add to an organization and that CEO pay is inherently

When deciding if a patient is a good candidate for surgery, a number of considerations need to be
taken. Can the patient safely undergo the surgery? Will the benefits of this surgery outweigh the
negatives? For instance, if a patient is elderly, is it worth the financial, emotional, and physical
cost to undergo the surgery? Dentists must be aware of what potentially can occur and what
precautions must be taken to minimize risk. (Petranker, Nikoyan, Ogle, 2012, p. 163). In all cases,

Occasionally tissue forceps are used to insure the tissue is closed during suturing. A needle is used
to penetrate overlying soft tissue with the addition of sutures. The needles most often used in this
type of surgery are curved. The curvature of the instrument allows the operator to cleanly sure up
the area without intrusion of the underlying bone. The needle point should be a cutting type so the
needle s journey through the mucosa is smooth. A needle driver holds the curved needle and

are used to create a proper surgeon s knot. The tied suture should be snug against the tissue, not
too tight and not too loose, so that proper healing is accentuated. Once tied, the suture ends are cut

Standardized Testing s Role In The Education System
Although standardized testing plays a prominent role in education systems, these tests continue to
spark controversy. Even critics have long warned that a flood of standardized testing is distorting
American education (Rizga Hernandez, 2015, p. 40). Many people feel as if standardized tests
only measure a small portion of what truly make s a student s educationmeaningful (Concordia

of standardized testsare said to measure a student s intelligence level. If students do not earn an

The pressure to cover the necessary material established in the set standards causes teachers to
structure their curriculum according to the test, rather than helping students gain real world

want to teach the material covered on the standardized exams which significantly hinders the
overall learning experience and potential for students. According to Kyle Spencer, a writer for
The New York Times, many parents are beginning to notice differences in the education platform
of their children and in some cases, parents are beginning to realize that teachers are only teaching
to the test (Spencer, 2015, para. 2). Educators who cram material in just to stay within a time frame
limit the scope of learning and success for students. As a result, it is very possible for educators to
neglect certain skills that go beyond the standard material covered on the exams. For example,
standardized tests mainly focus on content areas such as writing, reading, and math; however,
writing, reading, and math are not the only content areas that students need to learn (Tienken,
2015). Even though writing, reading, and math skills may be beneficial, students need to be well
rounded in all areas, including skills that are not present on

Odysseus and Dante
The two stories or myths, The Inferno written by Durante Alighieri published in 1314 and the
Odyssey by Homer in 800 B.C.E. are about true love, great journeys that are different but in some
ways parallel and end with them back with their true love. Both Dante and Odysseus have a woman
who waits for them and in their travels must search themselves and make the right choices to get
back to them. Odysseuslongs to be with his wife Penelope and Dante to be with the woman he
wants to marry Beatrice. Both men are very much love the woman in their lives, go to their own hell

death has a spirit that is very much in love with Dante. She has faith in... Show more content on

There are at least three rings in the seventh circle of hell, guarded by centaurs. Here people spend
eternity as trees because they did not appreciate the bodies they were given. The first ring is
where people who were violent to other people spend eternity in a pool of boiling blood, the
second is where the suicides go, and further down those that were violent toward God. In the eighth
circle there are pouches each with different punishments according to the level of scandals and lies
they were involved in (Inferno). There is more to this journey before Dante can return to his
beloved. Calypso keeps Odysseus prisoner because she loves him and wants to keep him for
herself. Odysseus had spent seven years with Calypso withdrawing into the cavern s deep
recesses, long in each other s arms . . . [losing themselves] in love (V.250 251) (Howell, E. N.,

and wife. He wants to leave her island Ogygia but has no ship. Finally, after Zeus sends Hermes to
rescue him, he convinces her to let Odysseus build a ship and lets him leave.
Then Poseidon God of the sea, who is mad at Odysseus for blinding his son the Cyclops
Polyphemus, sends a wind to blow them off course (Homer, 800 B.C.E.). As Dante s journey
continues, Virgil guides him through the ninth circle of hell where they find Satan frozen up to the

Comparable Worth
Introduction: The debate in this study is that of whether or not to use comparable worth as the
basis for future pay adjustments. Comparable worth, as defined by Merriam Webster, is the
concept that women and men should receive equal pay for jobs calling for comparable skill and
responsibility or that is of comparable worth to the employer. To further expand on this, the term
comparable worth describes the idea that gender biased jobs should be reanalyzed to determine
their worth to an employer. In theory, the goal of comparable worth is to raise wages for
traditionally female biased jobs to the level of those for comparable male biased jobs. Comparable
worth should not be confused with equal pay for equal work. Comparable worth... Show more

Therefore, different job evaluation systems and different job evaluators are likely to assign
different rankings to the same set of occupations. Recommendations: After careful consideration
of the relevant facts of this case, my recommendation would be to deny the request of future
wage adjustments based upon comparable worth. This recommendation is being made in light
of several key factors. The first factor is that under comparable worth, employers would be
required to set wages to reflect differences in the worth of jobs, with worth largely determined by
job evaluation studies, not by market forces. This sounds good in theory, however, it will put
the organization at a distinct disadvantage. According to Ann Barres, The size of a worker s
paycheck would be unrelated to supply/demand conditions in the labor market. Therefore
comparative worth could artificially inflate wages in some jobs and thereby attracting more
people than the market could absorb. Any radical restructuring of pay scales would place an
unfair burden on employers by raising their costs, and would unfairly impinge upon their freedom
to earn their livelihood as they choose(2). On the other hand if there was a shortage of workers in
one job, the employers hands would be tied as they could not raise the wages as to attract more
applicants. The next issue is that of determining comparative worth. Given the large number and
diversity of jobs being rated, it is unlikely that

In fact, The greatest achievement in English history, the breaking the bonds of Rome , and the
establishment of spiritual independence, was completed without bloodshed under Elizabeth s
auspices, and Elizabeth may have the glory of the work (Time.com, 2). The people of England
were in no need of a government that was more concerned about it more than it was for the people.
Elizabeth was Queen but she established good ties with parliament. England did not need the rule
of a monarchy that controlled strictly, took the people s wealth, and taxed. By taxing the people
parliament could control the people (Funk amp; Wagnalls vol. 9, 193). However, this was the exact
opposite of what Queen Elizabeth did. She was wealthy, however, she allowed the people of

The character that is stereotyped is known as Apu. For long periods, the viewers and writers did
not know that he was not a real figure but rather a stereotyped character. His main role is to
provoke a laugh from the jokes. Considerately, people argue that the reason why it was difficult
to identify the character as figurative or not is because all the details are filtered using a white
lens. The actor whose voice is used to represent that of Apu is also a white man and a large part of
the writers of The Simpsons that depicts a significant contribution to The Front episode and
comprises of the whites hence that would be another reason for the constraints in identification of
the stereotyped character. In essence, the voice is an impression of a white guy who seems to make
fun of a father (Singh, 2014). The use of Apu as a stereotype expresses the manner in which two
different cultures can come together and engage in particular processes. Ideally, this is seen in the
sense that the character is an Indian having descendent from the southern region of Asia. Through
this, it would also be easy to depict the varying cultural practices and experiences across different
communities. Therefore, the problems that affect them within the society would be established

them from taking part in gangs again by creating jobs for them. Fr. Boyle s ministry carries forth
the Ignatian maxim to seek the greater glory of Godby finding God in all things and embodies Stein
s insight on empathetic love and suffering in the the human community. The video about Fr. Boyle
and the HomeBoy industries covers about how and why the ministry got created in the first place.
He said, people join a gangbecause they are fleeing from something horrendous not seeking
something. His ministry seeks the greater glory of God by finding God in all things because he
was able to make something good out of something bad (gangs). Finding God in all things comes
from being aware that God can be seen in everyone and everywhere even in the worst places in the
United States. The greater glory of God can be achieved through devoting more attention towards
God and when that is achieved we (gang members) become grateful, willing to change, and in love
with God. Even though the gang members have committed evil acts in the past, the ministry looks

Sugar: the Sweet Poison
Contemporary Issues in Adolescent Health Wellbeing
WOOLSTON, Kristina
8/26/2014
Sugar is delicious it is a fast source of energy and sometimes cheaper than buying healthy foods. But
Australian teenagers need to wake up to the fact that they are consuming too much of it, the
consequences it is having on their lives.
Introduction
Sugar tastes good, can be used for baking and is a quick source of energy; however what is the
reality of eating sugar? In what way does it affect our bodies and minds to give a short boost of
energy? According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in Australia, 24.9% of
adolescents between the ages of five and seventeen are overweight or obese
(AustralianInstituteofHealthandWelfare, 2013). As the number of overweight teenagers in
Australia continued to rise, researchers looked for a reason for these overwhelming numbers and
discovered that Australian teenagers were consuming over 53kg of sugar each year, which is
around 29 teaspoons of both natural and added sugar each day (Cowan, 2014).
How is sugar digested?
Sugar is a Carbohydrate and provides a source of energy in the body. It is the only source of energy
for red blood cells and the brain. It is digested quickly and broken down to form glucose and
fructose, which is used for energy (My Food Diary, 2014). Fructose,

To Kill a Mockingbird Essay examples
Children look up to their elders for wisdom and advice. They rely on someone experienced and
with authority for guidance on how to live their lives. However, sometimes the people who are
accountable for youth mislead them; they may have good intentions, but are not mature enough to
exemplify their values and morals, or they simply are ignorant. In the novelTo Kill a Mockingbird,
Aunt Alexandra plays a negative role: she is a proper, southern lady with a strict code of
behaviour and etiquette, but is too closed minded and obstreperous to change her ways or view
the world from others perspectives. Calpurnia takes on the position of a positive role model by

...you can scrub Walter Cunningham till he shines, you can put him in shoes and a suit, but he ll

These words indicate not only a vituperative nature, but arrogance and obstinacy. She believes white
people are better than black people. She refuses to consider anything positive about people she
finds reprehensible; she is steadfast on her opinions about people and would rather not get to know
them. She is also quite domineering and officious; she often meddles with Atticus fatherly role:
...it s bad enough he lets you all run wild... (Lee, 83), Aunt Alexandra put him up to this... (Lee,
134).
This grandiloquence is a manifestation of hypocrisy in the novel because her behaviour towards
others is atrocious, yet she expects the best manners from Scout. Calpurnia is a much more
positive caregiver, as she is a strict disciplinarian, but to a lesser degree than Aunt Alexandra.
Likewise she is not a hypocrite; she could comment on the ways of white people because she has

Luke s Three Dimensions of Power
Luke s Three Dimensions of Power
Power serves to create power. Powerlessness serves to re enforce powerlessness
(Gaventa,1980:256). Such is the essence of the on going relationship between the Powerful and
the Powerless of the Appalachian Valley where acquiescence of the repressed has become not only
common practice but a way of life and a means of survival. In his novel Power and Powerlessness,
John
Gaventa examines the oppressive and desperate situation of the Appalachian coal miners under the
autocratic power of absentee land owners, local elites, and corrupt union leaders. His analyses is
based on Lukes three dimensional understanding of power from his book Power: A Radical View.

Both Lukes and Gaventa put forward the notion that restricting your analyses of a power situation
to the one dimensional model can skew your conclusions. If you limit yourself to this approach
your study will be impaired by a pluralistic biased view of power. Where the first dimension sees
power in its manifest functions of decision making over key issues raising observable conflict
due to policies raised through political participation, it ignores the unobservable mechanisms of
power that are sometimes just as or even more important. Many times power is exercised to
prevent an issue from being raised and to discourage participation in the political arena. Potential
issues and grievances are therefore not voiced and to assume this means that they do not exist
would be an outright deviation from fact. By restricting analyses to what is expressed and to
observable behaviour and overt conflict only, you miss any preference not expressed because of
fear of sanctions, manipulation, coercion and force. This critique of the behaviourial focus and
the recognition of unobservable factors of power is discussed in the two dimensional view of
power developed by Bachrach and Baratz by which power is exercised not just upon participants
within the decision making process

Creole Hybridity in Literature
Jamaican patois is not an official language, which is the same for most if not all languages are
not, although recently, there are some creole dictionaries and Haitian Creole is being taught in
schools. People tend to have a negative perception of a creole and thus, the people who speak and
chose to write in this creole languageare often lumped into a box. There is a stigma attached to it,
and people often say that it is the language of the poor lower class of the country. Growing up in
St. Lucia, I saw how this is true, people are often embarrassed by their parent who spoke creole,
or they as children where forbidden to speak creole as to avoid being stereotyped. The language
expresses the history of the Caribbeanand the hybridity that emerges through language. In the
diaspora, people depend on creating a space of home in the host country and language is an
important part of this space. The connection immigrants feel when they come into contact with
literature that features a language of their native homeland offers them their own space in the
literary world, and a way for their stories to be told. The writers and people who use creole are
confirming their identities as a merger of multiple influences. They use the language despite the
stigma and fight to maintain the culture by doing so language is part of one s identity. Wordy,

The Four Different Types Of Organic Compounds
Organic Compounds There are four main classes of organic compounds: carbohydrates, lipids,
proteins, and nucleic acids. Organic compounds are covalently bonded compounds that are
primarily composed of carbon atoms (excluding oxides and carbonates). These four classes of
organic compounds are vital to the life processes of all living things. One of the main organic
compounds are carbohydrates. Some carbohydrates are a source of energy and others are used
as structural materials for living things. Carbohydrates are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and
oxygen. They are in a ratio of one carbon atom to two hydrogen atoms to one oxygen atom
(1:2:1). The general formula of a carbohydrate is (CH2O)n. N is any whole number from three to
eight. The functional group of a carbohydrate is hydroxyl. Carbohydrates also have subclasses,
which are monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. A monosaccharide is a simple
sugar that is the basic subunit of a carbohydrate. The three examples of monosaccharides are
glucose, fructose, and galactose. Glucose is the main source of energy for cells. Fructose is the
sweetest of the monosaccharides and is found in fruits, while galactose is found milk. Compounds
like these sugars have the same chemical formula, but different structures, this is called isomers. A
disaccharide is a sugar formed from two monosaccharides. For example, the monosaccharides
fructose and glucose combining to form the disaccharide sucrose. A polysaccharide is one of

Persuasive Essay On Banning Campus Violence
Banning Campus Violence The results of the illegal actions performed by the campus members lead
to the increasing number of victims of the violence at campus. The paper investigates the necessity
to elaborate the necessary measures and methods to stimulate the process of reducing and further
banning of the violence on campus. The essence of this approach is on the reasons, which should
motivate the education institutions management to reduce the number of cases of violence on
campus. Therefore, the essential measure to ban the campus violence is the establishment of the
legal framework and controlling procedure over the students members of the campusesas the cases
of the violent actions have recently become frequent enough and lead to the negative
consequences for the students health and life. However, not all the scholars have a conviction
that there is a need to fight for the ban of violence on campuses. The audience of this paper can be

Class Structure In The Great Gatsby
In society, classes arrange themselves mainly into two different groups: upper class and lower
class. These classes were divided primarily based on how much money one makes, or inherits.
Class structure plays a major role in a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby,
which took place in the 1920 s. The character Jay Gatsbyattempted to remake the past by altering
his identity and accumulating riches to win over his lost love Daisy, who married Tom, another

Firstly, Fitzgerald attacked the rich. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald presented two distinct types of
wealthy people. First, there were people like the Buchanans and Jordan Baker who were born
into wealth. Their families have had money for many generations. As portrayed in the novel, the
old money people do not have to work, and they spend their time amusing themselves with
whatever they please. Daisy, Tom, Jordan, and the distinct social class they represent were
perhaps the story s most elitist group, imposing distinctions on the other people of wealth (like
Gatsby) based not so much on how much money one had, but where that money came from and
when it was acquired. For the old money people, the fact that Gatsby had only recently acquired
his money was reason enough to dislike him. In their way of thinking, he cannot possibly have
the same refinement, sensibility, and taste they have. Not only did he work for a living, but also
he came from a low class background, which in their opinion, meant he could not possibly be like
them. The East Eggers were judgmental and superficial, failing to look at the essence of the people
around them. Instead, they live their lives in such a way as to perpetuate their sense of superiority
however unrealistic that may be. The people with newly acquired wealth, though,

The Works That Have Impacted The Art World And Have Made...
Research Paper Throughout time there has been of course many influences that have impacted the
art world and have made it what it is today. However, there are some artistic movements that have
had a greater impact and stand out over others. The movement that has always personally stood out
to me was Ancient Egyptian art. The works that were produced for time period are interesting in
terms of the lack of tools and the innovation to make these paintings, sculptures, and architecture
that almost seem impossible to have been constructed. In my opinion the arts produced during the

Instead we must develop a psychical distance or detachment from ancient Egyptian art in order to
view it in its purest aesthetic form. Once we have achieved this then we can move on to the first of
the two methods, formalism.
With this method of formalism we compare form and style, analyzing only the purely visual
aspects such as color, line, shape and texture of an object or artwork. Two formalist individuals
worth mentioning are Immanuel Kant and Clive Bell. Kant who teaches us the importance of the
disinterested viewer, and Bell who also explains this. Bell states in his article The Aesthetic
Hypothesis that Our practical interests, with their correlative pleasures and pains, are blended,
become confused now and then, and disquiet our aesthetic interest, but never become united with it
. So even though ancient Egyptian art has always stood out to me personally, we cannot let our
personal interests or emotions effect the way we analyze the works produced from ancient Egypt.
The second of the two methods needed to view and analyze the works from ancient Egypt is
iconography. This method studies the content of images and symbols depicted within a certain
work of art or interpretation of these. One art historian whose works of iconography are still
relevant today was Erwin Panofsky. Iconography is split into three levels of learning

Alaska Glacial Retreat And Acidification Impacts On...
AGLACIER: Alaska GLacial retreat ACidification Impacts on Ecosystem Resilience
The EPSCoR Overarching Question is: How can we understand regime shifts and tipping points in
large scale ecosystems in Alaska. The theme we will address is: Coastal margins and marine living
resources.
Overarching Goal: This proposed EPSCoR will focus on the impact of glacial melt on the physics
and chemistry of the marine environment, and their consequences for the intertidal and coastal
biological communities.
Objectives:
1)Build on historical ecological data that describes the physical, biological, and chemical variability
of Kachemak Bay, a subarctic biodiversity hot spot.
2)Determine the mechanisms that relate the present and anticipated future variability in glacial
dynamics to shifts in coastal ecosystem structure and function using laboratory and field
experimentation, observations, and modeling.
Question:
How is variability in current and future glacial input to the marine environment influencing the
structure and function of coastal marine ecosystems via changes to the physical and chemical
environment (i.e., temperature, salinity, stratification, turbidity, pH and the carbonate saturation
state)?
Intellectual merit:
Healthy coastal marine ecosystems are critically important to America s ecology, economy, and
standard of living. While Alaska contains nearly half of the nation s coastline, we have little
understanding of how future climate variability will impact ecological

Labor Effects On Child Labor
Title Due to the failure of Hershey s voluntary efforts to stop child labor from being used within
its supply chain, the U.S. government should enforce existing federal law against the
importation of products made with forced labor. Trafficked Labor and Poor Working Conditions
Hershey sources much of its cocoa from West Africa a region plagued by extreme poverty and
known for extensive use of trafficked child labor. Though the countries of Ghana and the Ivory
Coast provide 70 percent of the world s cocoa supply(2?) horrible work conditions persist in the
agriculture sector. Starting in the late 1990 s, reports of slave labor on cocoa farms began to
appear in the media. In 1998, a newspaper in Cote d Ivoire reported the widespread practice of
trafficking and indenturing Malian boys for work on Ivorian cocoa plantations. The United
States Department of State reported an initial estimate of 15,000 Malian children working on
Ivorian cocoa and coffee plantations. Many of the child workers were under the age of 12, and
were sold into indentured servitude for as little as $140. These children were made to work for

Ww1 Trench Weapons
As we examine warfare from 1914 to the 1990s, we examine multiple tactics that include one lethal
weapon, the tank. At the introduction to World War I during the Battle of the Marne trench warfare
began to appear. A few months later a stalemate was in place and neither side could advance through
the thick machine gunfire the moment a soldier stood. It became apparent that a reliable
breakthrough vehicle was necessary to assault the heavily armed trenches that the germans dug. The
weapon soon appeared as the tank, the tank was extremely heavily armed and armored with the
weaponry that was required to break the stalemate during World War I. After the conclusion of
World WarI, Hitler s panzer army broke into poland and occupied the small country. During... Show

The tank first appeared on the fields of Somme as a new type of wonder weapon. Early tanks
like the Mark I and Little Willy were ineffective but terrifying for both the crew and the Germans.
The tank was heavy and the suspension of the tank suffered greatly under the weight of the tank.
Tracks and suspension was new at the time and was mostly used on tractors. The idea was for the
wide caterpillar like tracks to balance on thick mud and unstable terrain. The tracks designed to
plow fields were not resistant to gunfire and rocky terrain which would cause the bolts to loosen
and the tacks to fall. The armor of the although thick was mostly riveted which once hit would send
the bolts flying everywhere greatly injuring the crew helplessly trapped inside. The first tanks

Top Causes Of Homelessness
Top Causes of Homelessness states 3.5 billion Americans are homeless each year (2016, 1).
There are so many different reasons people can go homeless. What needs to happen to help these
people? Volunteering organizations are one of the many deeds we can do to help the homeless in
America. Many massive cities are a huge factor America s number of homeless. More in America
needs to be done to help the homeless to get as many of the people and families off the street.
Becoming homeless is caused by life altering events or series of events that were unexpected and
unplanned for (Top Causes of Homelessnessin America, 2016, 1).Tragic life occurrences include

Helping the homeless can cost a lot for the state, but Utah has found a way to help the homeless
and save money. Utah gives the homeless their own apartment. Although participants do have to
pay fifty dollars or thirty percent of their income, this really helped keeping people off the streets.
The state decreased their homeless rate by Ninety One percent (Cooper, 2015, 1 2). If more states
did this think how much we can decrease our overall homeless rate. Another great way is
something Hope for House does. They provide assistance that ranges from paying a first s month s
rent to offering permanent supportive housing so that people with disabilities can become stable and

Disney s Success At The Disney World
Walt Disney enjoyed instant success at the originally Walk Disney World in Florida, as well as
Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan. Expanding to the highly profitable continent of Europe was next on
the agenda for management. Ultimately Paris, France was the selected destination, due to the
regional demographics combined with the financial incentives provided by the French government.
Unfortunately for Disney success in Europewas not as straight forward as anticipated.
Poor understanding of the market place and failing to adapt to the French culture was a major factor
in contributing to the failure first experienced by EuroDisney. Management entered France with an
ethnocentric mindset, believing the European market would enjoy the same ... Show more content

Europeans prefer to walk and the lack of research invested in the French culture proved to be fatal.
The marketing strategy used by management was to promote the park through American customs
and values and did not reflect the views of Europeans. Advertisement focused on the size of the
theme park opposed to concentrating on the emotional experience families could experience while
at EuroDisney.
Marketers were unable to effectively interpret the influence and impact of the recession that
damaged the French economy. The recession meant the French people had other needs to
provide for before taking a vacation at EuroDisney. French families were reluctant to spend the
demanded $280 a night on a hotel, when in comparison upscale hotels, downtown Paris were
relatively similar in price. Visitors, who did attend the park, spent 12% less the initially
anticipated. The fiscal year of 1993 and 1994 recorded losses of $900 million dollars for Euro
Disney. Europeans could also fly to the United States for practically the same price as flying to
Paris. Disneyworld in Florida can guarantee nicer weather then France could. Therefore traveling to
the United States would be more appealing to the Europeans.
The failure could have been prevented if management at Disney invested time in developing the
marketing tools used to decrease ethnocentrism. Ensuring

Reflection On Gender Socialization
Through this gender socialization exercise of analyzing how children learn about gender, provides
a sense of social structures and institutions are organized, created, and maintained in society. After
visiting a department store that separates children s clothes and toys by gender it gave me an eye
opening view how society shapes children s mind of what is acceptable for their own gender, and
how these patterns create an inequality between each group. From this group exercise, there was a
obvious division discussed between the two genders in terms of clothingand toys on a daily basis as
these children grow up with these patterns. It was such a normal thing to see that many overlook
and never really thought about the long terms effects it has on young children. While discussing
with my group about patterns that girls clothing are brighter and bolder in color that incorporate
shapes like hearts with an additional component of glitter and sequins. As for boys, there are
limited to minimal pieces with darker, and neutral colors that are made with better material.
Girls toys can be easily spotted in aisles, covered in pinks and purples; tons of dolls, and disney
princesses. Boys had a variety of vehicles and tools that can be utilized for indoors and outdoor
playing. As we further discussed about each question, I was surprised how much of an
inequality there actually is, but society is moving towards change and is overcoming the gender
challenges that one would not necessarily be acceptable in the past. I learned how much of an
impact these social structures are applied at a young age and is carried throughout as these
children grow up with these aspects. Child development is very important through observations
of what is socially acceptable and how these patterns shape who they are as they become adults.
For girls, there are more opportunities to dress up, through the variations of clothing. As applied
to toys, not only girls just have a doll to play with, but accessories that go along with it such as a
doll house, and dress up accessories. Girls develop to become more nurturing and are encouraged
to be indoors, conforming to the stay at home wife that cleans, and has food on the table when the

And Setting In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
What if you could own a room, a room where whatever you thought took form? It would, of
course, not be real. But it would smell real, look real, and feel real. Would this be a room you
would want? Ray Bradbury, an author, tells of such a story using many different writing techniques.
Ray Bradbury uses setting, conflict, and foreshadowing to manipulate the plotof the story The veldt
and make it more interesting. Setting is an important part to any story whether it be fictional, sci
fi ,romance, or any story for that matter. But setting is more than just a place and a time. Setting
is also how the author saturates the story with mood and meaning. The setting for The Veldt is
in a Happylife home, where all actions are performed for them by machines. Tying shoes,
cooking, all things are done for them by machines. While this may sound like a pretty good place
to live, it does have it s shortcomings. It would give you no work ethic for starters. But in The
Veldt the conflict only surrounds the mechanical home to an extent. The conflict more pertains to
a room in the known only to the reader by the nursery . It is essentially a room where whatever
you imagine comes to fruition. The children in the story, or what the reader may deem the
antagonists, have dreamt up a room of Africa. Not the fun Africa with festivals and hotels either.
The africa with lions that kill and a blazing hot sun. This sort of setting puts across that the children
in the story are very upset and are

Sliding Filament Theory
How Do We Move?
Many of us go through our daily lives and activities without much thought on how
or why we move our bodies. Walking, jogging, lifting weights or even getting ourselves
out of bed in the morning requires an intricate pattern of processes that allow us to
move and access our enviroment. Our bodies move through a lever and pulley system
made up of our muscles bones and tendons acting on each other through muscle
contraction and relaxation. (1,3) To understand how a muscle contracts you must first
look at the anatomy of skeletal muscles.

sarcomeres are divided to show
how the sections move during a contraction. The Z line is in the middle of the I bands
and notes the separation of each sarcomere. The I band is light colored because it only
contains the thin filaments actin. The A band contains overlapping actin and myosin,
and the H zone only has myosin filaments. The M line is in the middle of the sarcomere
and is where the myosin filament is free of cross bridges.
Sliding Filament Theory
The sliding filament theory was first introduced over 50 years ago. Hugh Huxley
and Allan Huxley conducted two independent studies and published them in May 1954.
The theory has been added to, but remains relatively the same to this day.
Before the sliding filament theory, it was widely accepted by most academics that
the protein myosin contracted with the presence of calcium ions. The actin proteins roll
had not yet been realized. The 1954 theory states that the filaments containing the proteins myosin
and
actin slid past each other and neither filament changed in length. In 1957 Allan Huxley
added that the myosin has a cross bridge structure that binds, rotates and detaches
from the actin. He also states when energy is released from the conversion of ATP to
ADP it creates a power stroke that moves the filaments past each other. (6)

Today, while the soft drinkindustry s value has increased in 2004, the volume sales of carbonated
soft drinks has declined due to a large proportion of consumers who are opting for the trend towards
healthier alternatives in the functional drink segment (energy drinks, smoothies, milk juice drinks,
sports drinks) as well as bottled juices and water (ref.5). Companies have been actively engaged in
new product developments in order to counter the growing concerns about negative health impacts
of high fructose drinks, but also to increase the demand in a market where product offerings are
quickly maturing (ref.4). New flavor introductions and health conscious formulations have been
launched in an attempt to offset the decline in carbonated soft drink sales (ref.6). The functional
market is expected to show sustained growth and consumer interest in the future years as
consumption shifts to trendier, healthier and more sophisticated products (ref.7).
Profitability future growth potential: In 1993, Concentrate Producers earned 29% pretax profits
on their sales, while bottlers earned 9% profits on their sales, for a total industry profitability of
14%. While the functional drinks sector only accounts for 3.7% of the total soft drinks sales in
2004 (Appendix B), estimates are forecasting a growth of 7.3% in sales and 11.0% in volume
consumption by 2009 (ref.4).

Honor Of Honor By Marcus Brutus
There is something about honor that makes people ask themselves what honor really means. Honor
could have many different interpretations. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, honor is
specified as someone who is respected, has a good reputation, and who is genuinely a good person.
With this denotation in mind, some people might suggest that honor has not changed over time
because some people were looked upon as honorable in the middle ages. For example, Julius Caesar
and Marcus Brutus were both perceived as honorable men throughout the play. However, this
depends on someone s interpretation of honor because the Merriam Webster definition stated
that honor is described as someone who is genuinely a good person. Towards the end of the play
Marcus Brutus killed Julius Caesar. Therefore, he was no longer respected. Years ago society
thought of honor differently. An honorable person was someone who was most likely a knight or
a king. The knights went to battle for their masters. In American today, armies go into battle for
their country and loved ones. Citizens today might characterize honor as a person or group who
does something that is an honorable act. For instance, some might say that Superman is honorable,
yet Iron Man is not. Although both Iron Man and Superman save lives, Iron Man is complaisant
and greedy. There is no question that the aspect of honor has changed over time. The concept of
honor is different now than it was over 100 years ago. To begin, at least

Analysis Of The Book The Trojan War A New History

Berry Strauss s The Trojan War a New History Book Review
Barry Strauss, professor of classics at Cornell University attempts to redefine a one of history s
biggest love affairs, the Trojan War. Strauss explains how certain events and characters from
Homers The Odyssey might have actually existed, but also uses modern discoveries from the
Bronze Age to compare Homers account to those of Egypt, the Middle East, and etc. While Homer
s epic should not be read as a historical document which recounts the Trojan Warhundred percent
accurately, it can still be seen as document which embodies some historical truth. The novel as a
whole explains the customs, economic standing, fighting styles and beliefs of the Greeks.
Strauss s writing style allows for the book to be accessible to both students and historians. He
argues that just like Franz Ferdinand was the spark which ignited World War 1, Helen on the
other hand was just a spark which escalated an existing tension between the Greeks and Trojans.
Strauss s personal input on the war itself gives the novel a different outlook on the Trojan War
because, it allows for readers to see beyond the facts and make connections with ideas that Strauss
had made with recent discoveries and Homers epic. Strauss sectionalizes the book in 11 chapters,
excluding the introduction and conclusion, and in each chapter he covers a different aspect of the

  • 2. Essay about Marcus Aurelius Meditations Kurt McGann 11/12/11 Period 1 Mythology Hart Personal Meditations Section 1 Stoicism: a systematic philosophy, dating from around 300 b.c., that held the principles of logical thought to reflect a cosmic reason instantiated in nature. (dictionary.com). Marcus Aurelius (the author of Meditations ) was a stoic as well as an emperor. The book he wrote was a collection of thoughts, things he advised himself to do, a piece reflecting his stoicism, and a personal diary of sorts. The kinds of things put into this book were sometimes crazy, sometimes contradictory, yet sometimes very true and insightful. Marcus wasn t a professional philosopher, and this comes out in his work, but he had an interesting way of living his life. His writings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Could you have a hot bath unless the firewood underwent some change? Could you be nourished if the food suffered no change? Is it possible for any useful thing to be achieved without change? Do you not see, then, that change in yourself is of the same order, and no less necessary to nature? Many things we reap benefits from only come from the change of that item, as marcus explains. As well as getting benefits from change, we can also get cons. If we change things, such as law reforms, many will be mad, and just as many will be happy. So when it comes to change, it can leave bad effects just as well as it can leave good effects. Although Marcus has good intent, I can t head all of his advice. Marcus believed along with other things, that self improvement was important over many a things. I agree that self improvement is well, self improvement; and by the nature of the phrase itself is a good thing. Marcus holds this true at a more extreme level, putting it before things that lead to your own happiness. If today was your last day to live (assuming you are certain it is your last day to live) and you had a responsibility to better yourself given to you before your death, Marcus would say to go through with that responsibility, even if it resulted in your own discomfort. Marcus sees the improvement of one s self would be more important than your own happiness, saying that dying a better person is better than dying content. I completely ... • 3. Exploring Phonemic Awareness In The Classroom According to the article, Supporting phonemic awareness development in the classroom, educators are displaying difficulties defining the word phonemic awareness. At times, educators would confuse the word phonemic awareness with phonetics, phonics or auditory discrimination. Phonemic awareness is the awareness that the speech stream consists of a sequence of sounds specifically phonemes, the smallest unit of sound that makes a difference in communication. A slight change of a phonemein a word can change the thought and meaning behind the sentence. To gain a better understanding of the term phonemic awareness, the articles break it up into two superordinate constructs: phonological awarenessand meta linguistics. Phonemic awareness is a sub skill of the word phonological awareness, which refers to the ability to control each phoneme. Meta linguistic refers to the thinking of one s languageand phonological awareness refers to a sensitivity to any size unit of sound. Examples of phonological awareness are the ability to recognize rhyming words, identify each phoneme in a word, count syllables, and separate the beginning of a word from its ending. Overall, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness and meta linguistic awareness are all connected to one another.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, educators must create purposeful and meaningful lesson geared around nursery rhymes and chants etc. It has been stated that educators are teaching nursery rhymes without knowing the true value of the ... • 4. The Importance Of Public Surveillance With the increase in public surveillance by governments and big coperations, there has grown a need to combat it and its effects on society today. It s mainly a question of privacy to everyone, can we really trust him, so what s Public surveillance and automated face recognition? Public Surveillance is the monitoring of conduct, exercises, or other changing data to influence, oversee, coordinate or protect individuals. This can incorporate the use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) or capturing of electronically transmitted data, for example, through phone calls. Besides that, it s no longer a dusk to dawn activity but 24/7. Automated Face Recognition can be best described as the use of specialised software to identify individuals in digital images or videos using sophisticated algorithms that are linked to databases. This kind of software is able to compare several facial features of a person and uniquely identify them amongst a million others accurately. In 2013, the act of public surveillance and automated face recognition by world governments was raised after Edward Snowden exposed the global surveillance documents. Revealing in view of archives Snowden spilled to different media outlets set off an open deliberation about common freedoms and the privilege to security in this Digital Age. So how is it carried out. As stated above surveillance is mainly carried out by governments with the help of big coperations and security organisations like the police. In a study ... Primo Levi s Survival in Auschwitz Essay Sarah Johnson Personal Response to Survival in Auschwitz Why is the pain of every day translated so constantly into our dreams, in the ever repeated scene of the unlistened to story (Levi, p 60)? As I read this quote in my book, I highlighted it and wrote in the margin foreshadowing . I feel confident that these dreams signified just that; that the author (amongst the other survivors) would forever re live those horrors and try tell their stories...and no one listens. I thought that Levi s response to Kuhn s prayer was extreme at first, for isn t it customary to give thanks for good fortune? But then as I reflected on this, Levi was absolutely correct. How dare one man thank God for living another day when the man beside him has been condemned? There is no rhyme or reason to it, there is no why in the Lager. For example, some of the most well liked tragedies of all time include Gone with the Wind, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, many of Shakespeare s plays, and a Streetcar Named Desire. • 6. Etiological Causes Of Death s Poor Diets And Inactivity Alice Sekimonyo HLTH 3105 Dr Piper I have learned that etiological causes of death are not diseases but they are what make us sick in the first place. Good examples of etiological causes of death incudes poor diets and inactivity. An epidemiological scientific study of racism classified racismas being an etiological factor for diseases and injuries. Since then, many others researches have been focused on its measurement and how racism plays a major role in health disparities. Despite the lack of agreement on the definition of racism, we cannot deny that racism is a factor that has affected the quality of life of certain groups of people throughout the history. Oxford dictionary defines discrimination as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex (Oxford). Discrimination has been related to depression and anxiety that lead to a poor general health outcome. The concept of racism can be defined as being discriminated against because of one s skin color. In the 13th annual summer public health video conference in minority health at the University of North Carolina Chapel, four presenters carefully discuss about whether or not racism is really making us sick by looking at different approaches and perspectives. • 8. How Different Systems Of Production And Their Contributing... This theory is used to explain how different systems of production and their accompanying socioeconomic institutions characterize different economic periods (Blau, 2003). The SSA theory accepts crisis as a part of the capitalist cycle, and expects the market to collapse for new opportunities for growth and capital gains. At the end of the 19th century and in the early and mid 20th century, there have been three major economic collapses that shaped the structure and operation of the USA. Reich (2009) notes the Depression of the1890s due to the devaluation of the dollar and agricultural crisis was resolved politically in the election of 1896 and economically by the merger wave of 1897 1903. During this phase companies providing similar services merged to create monopoly over their lines of production such as railroads and electricity. The Federal Reserve Systemconceptualized in 1908 was created in 1913 with the purpose of maintaining the value of American currency and controlling bank credit. While created by the government the institution represents ideology and theory in practice. Prior to Congress oversees the entire Federal Reserve System. The reserve must work within the objectives established by Congress though the Federal Reserve maintains autonomy to carry out its responsibilities without political pressure. He addresses several subjects still debated in today s society, such as justice, gender roles, and the proper form of education. He discusses these issues through his main character, Socrates. Socrates, another well known philosopher for his time, happens upon a group of men, and what begins as a modest question, leads into a series of debates, metaphors, and allegories. Perhaps the most discussed allegory in today s popular culture is the Allegory of the Cave. Over the past decade, several movies have mimicked the fantasy, the most profitable being the Matrix Trilogy. But what makes this story so fascinating? Through it, Platoattempts to map... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since these are the only beings they are aware of, the sounds made by the people are also assumed to come from the shadows. Socrates summarizes their belief system stating, such men would hold that the truth is nothing other than the shadows of artificial things, (Book VII, 515c). After describing the setting of the cave, Socrates asks his audience to imagine that one of the prisoners breaks free from his bonds, and sees the fire and the statues themselves. He notes that there would first come pain as his eyes adjust to the new light, and disbelief, as everything he had previously thought to be real is suddenly proven artificial. However, Socrates assures his audience that the man would eventually come to realize that the people and the fire are more real than the shadows had ever been. He would ultimately grasp how the fire creates the shadows of the statues, creating a mere copy of the real thing. He would then conclude that the fire and the statues are the most real things in the world. Though the man would then seem to be educated, Socrates takes the fantasy farther by dragging the freed prisoner out of the cave and into the actual world. At first, the man s eyes would dart from the brightness of the sun, and watch only shadows. Eventually, his eyes would allow him to look at reflections and finally at the actual objects themselves. He then realizes that the trees, flowers, houses, rocks, and animals he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Court For Hear Death Penalty Cases Court cases are heard on the first Monday of October all the way to late June or early July unless otherwise decided by the court. In any court system, state or federal, certain requirements must be met before a case can be brought before a court. (Schmidt, Shelley, Bardes 274) Two of which are jurisdiction; the authority of the court to hear and decide a case, and standing to sue; an actual reason to bring to court. Surprisingly the Supreme Court cases have no right of appeal. The court tends to choose which cases it will decide and there never really is a full explanation on why one was chosen over another. In the article, Supreme Court to Hear Death Penalty Cases, in The New York Times; Adam Liptak talks about two different death penalty cases to be heard in October 2016. Case number 15 8049, Buck v. Stephens, is to be heard over whether or not race should one of the factors associated with future dangerousness. • 11. Supreme Court Case Terry v. Ohio In the case Terry v. Ohio, the defendant John Terry argued that his Fourth Amendment right was violated when a police officer conducted a search on him, and found a concealed weapon. According to the officer, he had been monitoring Terry s actions prior to the stop in fear of his safety, thus, had enough reasonable suspicionto stop and search the defendant. The Supreme Court decided to rule in favor of the state determining that the officer may stop and frisk any suspicious person when he feels that his safety or those of others are in danger. A Terry Stop is when the police are allowed to stop, question and frisk someone they believe is behaving suspiciously (Larson, 2000). I am going to argue how police officers benefit from the Terry Stops even though on many occasions they take advantage of their power and act unethical. Essentially, it is acceptable for police officers to stop and frisk any suspicious person because it enhances the community. Furthermore, from the law enforcement perspective, any officer of the law should have a mandatory right to stop and search for weapons in order to protect themselves at all times. It is obvious that society feels that they cannot trust law enforcement because minorities are more likely to be stopped and frisk. Needless to say, it can be argued that we are one step closer to chaos. I would consider that the Supreme Court clarify and specify a little more on the stop and frisk law because ambiguity. • 12. The Pros And Cons Of Zoos A National Disgrace Zoos a national disgrace Today s zoos are prime providers of entertainment, encouraging people in their thousands to come along and experience the reality of captured animals in small, useless and uninhabitable enclosures. The constant flash of cameras and pressing noses to the glass has become the signature of the zoos which house these precious creatures, yet what we fail to identify is the constant horror and neglect these poor, harmless animals are subjected to. So why should these animals be treated so cruelly? According to a recent study, over three quarters of UK zoos fail to reach the minimum requirements needed for the animals in their care. This shockingly high statistic shows that animals aren t receiving the attention they deserve, with the majority being kept in dirty and unhygienic enclosures with stagnant drinking water. Not enough is being done to replicate the natural habitat of these animals. The climate many zoo animals are introduced to is unusual and different compared to their natural one. This can have major consequences, including animals reacting abnormally to this change and getting injured, even though this could have been avoided. This new life that animals are forced to experience has in turn resulted in confusion and led to the stunted development of youngsters. On a typical day, animals in the wild are free to roam around and carry out basic tasks such as hunting and raising their young. This however, is the complete opposite to ... Typically, for a NPO what is also important is that who writes the mission statement. Considering only senior management or executives could be one answer, but I believe that since a NPO does most of its operational work largely through volunteers and less through employees, it becomes important to have representation of this constituency as well. The closer the mission statement is to what these volunteers considers is important for their end customers, the more likely is the high quality of the output and easier to continue recruiting volunteers. However, since many of the large NPO that we know and will discuss in this paper have been existing for decades, it also makes sense to evaluate mission statements in the context of emerging needs of the customers every 20 30 years. They investigated the relationship between the impact of these skills on CEO compensation for both internal and external successors and concluded that differential skill specificity is associated with pay premiums to external successors. CEO s age tenure may play an important role but the studies conducted were unable to test for this due to lack of relevant data (Tosi et al., 2000; Buchholtz et al., 1998). CEO compensation: An ethical perspective According to Matsumura and Shin (2005) the ratio of executive to worker pay has climbed from 42:1 in 1982 to 301:1 in 2003. This has invited a lot of criticism from the shareholders, employees and has attracted the attention of restrictive regulators. The needle point should be a cutting type so the needle s journey through the mucosa is smooth. A needle driver holds the curved needle and insures proper angulation and penetration of tissue. After all, the top of the tower is the part that is most exposed to the elements and is most important to be visible for air navigation. There are two potential cost impacts with this requirement: Cost of Annual Inspection Painted tower owners must test the fade of the paint and record the result annually. Since the FCC requires the test at the top of the tower, a certified climbing crew is required. The tower crew cost is driven by the mobilization requirements and the time it takes to do the test. Even critics have long warned that a flood of standardized testing is distorting American education (Rizga Hernandez, 2015, p. 40). Many people feel as if standardized tests only measure a small portion of what truly make s a student s educationmeaningful (Concordia Online Education, 2016). The pressure to cover the necessary material established in the set standards causes teachers to structure their curriculum according to the test, rather than helping students gain real world knowledge that will help them succeed in life (Hicks, 2005, p. 1). In most cases, educators only want to teach the material covered on the standardized exams which significantly hinders the overall learning experience and potential for students. According to Kyle Spencer, a writer for The New York Times, many parents are beginning to notice differences in the education platform of their children and in some cases, parents are beginning to realize that teachers are only teaching to the test (Spencer, 2015, para. 2). Educators who cram material in just to stay within a time frame limit the scope of learning and success for students. As a result, it is very possible for educators to neglect certain skills that go beyond the standard material covered on the exams. For example, standardized tests mainly focus on content areas such as writing, reading, and math; however, writing, reading, and math are not the only content areas that students need to learn (Tienken, 2015). • 23. Comparable Worth Introduction: The debate in this study is that of whether or not to use comparable worth as the basis for future pay adjustments. Comparable worth, as defined by Merriam Webster, is the concept that women and men should receive equal pay for jobs calling for comparable skill and responsibility or that is of comparable worth to the employer. To further expand on this, the term comparable worth describes the idea that gender biased jobs should be reanalyzed to determine their worth to an employer. In theory, the goal of comparable worth is to raise wages for traditionally female biased jobs to the level of those for comparable male biased jobs. Comparable worth should not be confused with equal pay for equal work. Comparable worth... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, different job evaluation systems and different job evaluators are likely to assign different rankings to the same set of occupations. Recommendations: After careful consideration of the relevant facts of this case, my recommendation would be to deny the request of future wage adjustments based upon comparable worth. This recommendation is being made in light of several key factors. The first factor is that under comparable worth, employers would be required to set wages to reflect differences in the worth of jobs, with worth largely determined by job evaluation studies, not by market forces. This sounds good in theory, however, it will put the organization at a distinct disadvantage. According to Ann Barres, The size of a worker s paycheck would be unrelated to supply/demand conditions in the labor market. Therefore comparative worth could artificially inflate wages in some jobs and thereby attracting more people than the market could absorb. Any radical restructuring of pay scales would place an unfair burden on employers by raising their costs, and would unfairly impinge upon their freedom to earn their livelihood as they choose(2). On the other hand if there was a shortage of workers in one job, the employers hands would be tied as they could not raise the wages as to attract more applicants. The next issue is that of determining comparative worth. Given the large number and diversity of jobs being rated, it is unlikely that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The audience of this paper can be diverse: from the students to the employees of the educational institutions. The paper s structure applies the appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos to make the reader s perception of the problem more serious and profound. The paper comprises the statistics of the violent actions on campus which serve as a consequence of alcohol and drug abuse by the students as well as the results of the lack of the gun control. • 39. Class Structure In The Great Gatsby In society, classes arrange themselves mainly into two different groups: upper class and lower class. These classes were divided primarily based on how much money one makes, or inherits. Class structure plays a major role in a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby, which took place in the 1920 s. The character Jay Gatsbyattempted to remake the past by altering his identity and accumulating riches to win over his lost love Daisy, who married Tom, another rich man. The narrator Nick, who was cynical, connected with all the main characters, and had the ability to see the good in Gatsby. Fitzgerald disapproved of the upper class so he critiqued it through his literature as seen Nick s views of East Egg, the description of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Firstly, Fitzgerald attacked the rich. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald presented two distinct types of wealthy people. First, there were people like the Buchanans and Jordan Baker who were born into wealth. Their families have had money for many generations. As portrayed in the novel, the old money people do not have to work, and they spend their time amusing themselves with whatever they please. Daisy, Tom, Jordan, and the distinct social class they represent were perhaps the story s most elitist group, imposing distinctions on the other people of wealth (like Gatsby) based not so much on how much money one had, but where that money came from and when it was acquired. For the old money people, the fact that Gatsby had only recently acquired his money was reason enough to dislike him. In their way of thinking, he cannot possibly have the same refinement, sensibility, and taste they have. Not only did he work for a living, but also he came from a low class background, which in their opinion, meant he could not possibly be like them. The East Eggers were judgmental and superficial, failing to look at the essence of the people around them. Instead, they live their lives in such a way as to perpetuate their sense of superiority however unrealistic that may be. The people with newly acquired wealth, though, ... • 40. The Works That Have Impacted The Art World And Have Made... Research Paper Throughout time there has been of course many influences that have impacted the art world and have made it what it is today. However, there are some artistic movements that have had a greater impact and stand out over others. The movement that has always personally stood out to me was Ancient Egyptian art. The works that were produced for time period are interesting in terms of the lack of tools and the innovation to make these paintings, sculptures, and architecture that almost seem impossible to have been constructed. In my opinion the arts produced during the Early Dynastic through the New Kingdom of Ancient Egyptare some of the most technologically advance forms that stand out over all other art forms for the time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead we must develop a psychical distance or detachment from ancient Egyptian art in order to view it in its purest aesthetic form. Once we have achieved this then we can move on to the first of the two methods, formalism. With this method of formalism we compare form and style, analyzing only the purely visual aspects such as color, line, shape and texture of an object or artwork. Two formalist individuals worth mentioning are Immanuel Kant and Clive Bell. Kant who teaches us the importance of the disinterested viewer, and Bell who also explains this. Bell states in his article The Aesthetic Hypothesis that Our practical interests, with their correlative pleasures and pains, are blended, become confused now and then, and disquiet our aesthetic interest, but never become united with it . So even though ancient Egyptian art has always stood out to me personally, we cannot let our personal interests or emotions effect the way we analyze the works produced from ancient Egypt. The second of the two methods needed to view and analyze the works from ancient Egypt is iconography. This method studies the content of images and symbols depicted within a certain work of art or interpretation of these. One art historian whose works of iconography are still relevant today was Erwin Panofsky. Iconography is split into three levels of learning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

AGLACIER: Alaska GLacial retreat ACidification Impacts on Ecosystem Resilience The EPSCoR Overarching Question is: How can we understand regime shifts and tipping points in large scale ecosystems in Alaska. The theme we will address is: Coastal margins and marine living resources. Overarching Goal: This proposed EPSCoR will focus on the impact of glacial melt on the physics and chemistry of the marine environment, and their consequences for the intertidal and coastal biological communities. Objectives: 1)Build on historical ecological data that describes the physical, biological, and chemical variability of Kachemak Bay, a subarctic biodiversity hot spot. 2)Determine the mechanisms that relate the present and anticipated future variability in glacial dynamics to shifts in coastal ecosystem structure and function using laboratory and field experimentation, observations, and modeling. Question: How is variability in current and future glacial input to the marine environment influencing the structure and function of coastal marine ecosystems via changes to the physical and chemical environment (i.e., temperature, salinity, stratification, turbidity, pH and the carbonate saturation state)? Intellectual merit: Healthy coastal marine ecosystems are critically important to America s ecology, economy, and standard of living. While Alaska contains nearly half of the nation s coastline, we have little understanding of how future climate variability will impact ecological ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Labor Effects On Child Labor Title Due to the failure of Hershey s voluntary efforts to stop child labor from being used within its supply chain, the U.S. government should enforce existing federal law against the importation of products made with forced labor. Trafficked Labor and Poor Working Conditions Hershey sources much of its cocoa from West Africa a region plagued by extreme poverty and known for extensive use of trafficked child labor. Though the countries of Ghana and the Ivory Coast provide 70 percent of the world s cocoa supply(2?) horrible work conditions persist in the agriculture sector. Starting in the late 1990 s, reports of slave labor on cocoa farms began to appear in the media. In 1998, a newspaper in Cote d Ivoire reported the widespread practice of trafficking and indenturing Malian boys for work on Ivorian cocoa plantations. The United States Department of State reported an initial estimate of 15,000 Malian children working on Ivorian cocoa and coffee plantations. Many of the child workers were under the age of 12, and were sold into indentured servitude for as little as $140. These children were made to work for 12 hour days for annual salaries between $135 to $189(4?). By itself, the fact that these children are working under the age of 12 violates widely accepted international labor standards.(4?). Making matters worse is that the labor is compulsory, physically demanding, and places children in danger. Workers use sharp tools, such as machetes, and use harmful ... The marketing strategy used by management was to promote the park through American customs and values and did not reflect the views of Europeans. Advertisement focused on the size of the theme park opposed to concentrating on the emotional experience families could experience while at EuroDisney. Marketers were unable to effectively interpret the influence and impact of the recession that damaged the French economy. The recession meant the French people had other needs to provide for before taking a vacation at EuroDisney. French families were reluctant to spend the demanded $280 a night on a hotel, when in comparison upscale hotels, downtown Paris were relatively similar in price. Visitors, who did attend the park, spent 12% less the initially anticipated. The fiscal year of 1993 and 1994 recorded losses of $900 million dollars for Euro Disney. • 46. Reflection On Gender Socialization Through this gender socialization exercise of analyzing how children learn about gender, provides a sense of social structures and institutions are organized, created, and maintained in society. After visiting a department store that separates children s clothes and toys by gender it gave me an eye opening view how society shapes children s mind of what is acceptable for their own gender, and how these patterns create an inequality between each group. From this group exercise, there was a obvious division discussed between the two genders in terms of clothingand toys on a daily basis as these children grow up with these patterns. It was such a normal thing to see that many overlook and never really thought about the long terms effects it has on young children. While discussing with my group about patterns that girls clothing are brighter and bolder in color that incorporate shapes like hearts with an additional component of glitter and sequins. As for boys, there are limited to minimal pieces with darker, and neutral colors that are made with better material. Girls toys can be easily spotted in aisles, covered in pinks and purples; tons of dolls, and disney princesses. Boys had a variety of vehicles and tools that can be utilized for indoors and outdoor playing. As we further discussed about each question, I was surprised how much of an inequality there actually is, but society is moving towards change and is overcoming the gender challenges that one would not necessarily be acceptable in the past. I learned how much of an impact these social structures are applied at a young age and is carried throughout as these children grow up with these aspects. Child development is very important through observations of what is socially acceptable and how these patterns shape who they are as they become adults. For girls, there are more opportunities to dress up, through the variations of clothing. As applied to toys, not only girls just have a doll to play with, but accessories that go along with it such as a doll house, and dress up accessories. Girls develop to become more nurturing and are encouraged to be indoors, conforming to the stay at home wife that cleans, and has food on the table when the husband ... • 47. And Setting In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury What if you could own a room, a room where whatever you thought took form? It would, of course, not be real. But it would smell real, look real, and feel real. Would this be a room you would want? Ray Bradbury, an author, tells of such a story using many different writing techniques. Ray Bradbury uses setting, conflict, and foreshadowing to manipulate the plotof the story The veldt and make it more interesting. Setting is an important part to any story whether it be fictional, sci fi ,romance, or any story for that matter. But setting is more than just a place and a time. Setting is also how the author saturates the story with mood and meaning. The setting for The Veldt is in a Happylife home, where all actions are performed for them by machines. Tying shoes, cooking, all things are done for them by machines. While this may sound like a pretty good place to live, it does have it s shortcomings. It would give you no work ethic for starters. But in The Veldt the conflict only surrounds the mechanical home to an extent. The conflict more pertains to a room in the known only to the reader by the nursery . It is essentially a room where whatever you imagine comes to fruition. The children in the story, or what the reader may deem the antagonists, have dreamt up a room of Africa. Not the fun Africa with festivals and hotels either. The africa with lions that kill and a blazing hot sun. This sort of setting puts across that the children in the story are very upset and are ... Walking, jogging, lifting weights or even getting ourselves out of bed in the morning requires an intricate pattern of processes that allow us to move and access our enviroment. Our bodies move through a lever and pulley system made up of our muscles bones and tendons acting on each other through muscle contraction and relaxation. Before the sliding filament theory, it was widely accepted by most academics that the protein myosin contracted with the presence of calcium ions. The actin proteins roll had not yet been realized. The 1954 theory states that the filaments containing the proteins myosin and actin slid past each other and neither filament changed in length. In 1957 Allan Huxley added that the myosin has a cross bridge structure that binds, rotates and detaches from the actin. He also states when energy is released from the conversion of ATP to ADP it creates a power stroke that moves the filaments past each other. • 53. Honor Of Honor By Marcus Brutus There is something about honor that makes people ask themselves what honor really means. Honor could have many different interpretations. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, honor is specified as someone who is respected, has a good reputation, and who is genuinely a good person. With this denotation in mind, some people might suggest that honor has not changed over time because some people were looked upon as honorable in the middle ages. For example, Julius Caesar and Marcus Brutus were both perceived as honorable men throughout the play. However, this depends on someone s interpretation of honor because the Merriam Webster definition stated that honor is described as someone who is genuinely a good person. Towards the end of the play Marcus Brutus killed Julius Caesar. Therefore, he was no longer respected. Years ago society thought of honor differently. An honorable person was someone who was most likely a knight or a king. The knights went to battle for their masters. In American today, armies go into battle for their country and loved ones. Citizens today might characterize honor as a person or group who does something that is an honorable act. For instance, some might say that Superman is honorable, yet Iron Man is not. Although both Iron Man and Superman save lives, Iron Man is complaisant and greedy. There is no question that the aspect of honor has changed over time. Analysis Of The Book The Trojan War A New History Adrian Olivas September 8, 2015 Classics 40 Mr. Smith 4:00 Berry Strauss s The Trojan War a New History Book Review Barry Strauss, professor of classics at Cornell University attempts to redefine a one of history s biggest love affairs, the Trojan War. Strauss explains how certain events and characters from Homers The Odyssey might have actually existed, but also uses modern discoveries from the Bronze Age to compare Homers account to those of Egypt, the Middle East, and etc. While Homer s epic should not be read as a historical document which recounts the Trojan Warhundred percent accurately, it can still be seen as document which embodies some historical truth. The novel as a whole explains the customs, economic standing, fighting styles and beliefs of the Greeks. Strauss s writing style allows for the book to be accessible to both students and historians. He argues that just like Franz Ferdinand was the spark which ignited World War 1, Helen on the other hand was just a spark which escalated an existing tension between the Greeks and Trojans. Strauss s personal input on the war itself gives the novel a different outlook on the Trojan War because, it allows for readers to see beyond the facts and make connections with ideas that Strauss had made with recent discoveries and Homers epic. Strauss sectionalizes the book in 11 chapters, excluding the introduction and conclusion, and in each chapter he covers a different aspect of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
