The Denver Airport baggage handling system was owned by United Airlines and built at a cost of $230 million to automate baggage handling through the entire airport. However, the complex system proved more difficult than expected and faced many problems, forcing the airport to shut down for 16 months. The failure of the system resulted in over $340 million in costs due to delays and interest, in addition to ongoing maintenance costs that were higher than the previous manual system.

In order to get softwares done, project managers have to deal with a lot of factors and be able to predict key factors that can kill a project in a matter of time. These critical components are those who make the way of the project, successful or not. The pursuit of a good software can go well and lead to a good software or go wrong and throw into millions of dollars in the trash.
This study will look into The Denver Airport Baggage Handling System and use it as an example of how wrong decisions and weak planning can prejudice not only a project but the whole institution.Airline Industry

Airline Operations
Flight itinerary planning involves arranging cities in the desired sequence of a trip from origin to destination, following three basic rules: avoid crisscrossing, backtracking, and using fewer carriers. However they can be used in other than military missions like detection of hazardous objects on train rails and investigation of infected areas. On any given day, Delta services “2,100 flights, carries about 300,000 passengers, uses 7.3 million gallons of fuel, serves 87,000 cans of soda, and, to keep the soda cold, boards 219,000 pounds of ice.” (Gage, McCormick) With this volume of activity occurring in airports across the country, there is bound to be inefficiencies. Thus, in late 1997, Delta Technology was formed as a subsidiary of Delta Airlines to address technology concerns. Its mission was to use technology to improve customer service, eliminate inefficiencies, decrease costs, and, ultimately create the best travel experience for their passengers. Delta technology initiated their first system development project; a project that would forever change air travel for Delta. Before its end, this project would involve replacing all the hardware and software in all airports worldwide including gate podiums, phones, printers, networks, servers, applications, databases, and many peripherals; and, with no disruption in service.
As a result of technology, Delta Airlines trimmed their operating expenses $700 million and generated $150 million in new revenue 2002. These successes are attributed to the Delta’s Nervous System; a five year project to build a communication infrastructure that would link more than 100,00 pieces of equipment, over 30 databases, and more than 300 physical locations. The cost of the project was $1.5 billion.
Background
Delta Technology inherited a legacy of many disparate systems that had been slowly developed over time including third-party and custom-developed software. There were “about 17 different technology architectures and 30 different platform environments” (Mc Cooey) each managed separately at different locations. Sometimes, there were even multiple versions of the same software used in different locations of the company. Basically, each location was independently managing their destiny.
In addition to the state of technology within Delta, the U.S. Department of Transportation had imposed regulations requiring all airlines to computerize reservations systems and use the system to effectively manage pricing of seats. This was based on the success of Sabre, American Airline’s reservation system. Sabre, the first system in the industry to give the ability mine buying patterns and determined optimal pricing. The system led to the first frequent flyer program and cheap nonrefundable tickets. For American, this system was considered the “first strategic system – an information system that altered the business strategy of the company.” (Gage, McCormick)
If the government’s pressure to adhere to standards wasn’t enough, at the turn of the century, a proliferation of web travel services posed challenges for Delta. Delta estimated that by investing and promoting online purchasing through the web, the company could.

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. Introduction ➔ World’s largest automated airport baggage handling system. ➔ Originally planned to automate the handling of baggage through the entire airport. ➔ But this method proved more complicated than some initially thought. ➔ As they worked with this system, it faced more problems. ➔ As a result, the airport was shut down for 16 months.
- 5. Who owns ❖ Owned By United Airlines. ❖ This is covering land area of 140 Km2. ❖ This was to be the largest airport in US and capacity to handle more than 50m passengers annually.
- 6. When it was developed, cost ❏ The system was designed and built by BAE Automated systems Inc in carrollton,Texas. ❏ The works starts on Nov 1989. ❏ It was set to opened in october 1993 but did not do so until February 1995. ❏ But in 2003 it was acquired by G&T conveyor co in Taveras. ❏ The total cost is $230 million for design and install. ❏ But because of the delay of 16 months it will become $340 million with interest.
- 7. Purpose ➢ All baggage was handled by a manual tug and trolley system that was hurriedly built ➢ Time Saving ➢ Damages of baggages can be decreased ➢ Reduce the manPower
- 8. Disaster or failure ● The monthly cost of maintenance of new system was higher rather than manual system.($1M) ● Underestimation of complexity ● Complex architecture. ● Changes in requirements. ● Underestimation of schedule and budget. ● Dismissal of advice from experts.

Cost of failure ★ When they decided to shutdown the airport, they had to pay $ 60 million a year as part of its lease. ★ United pays about $ 200 million a year to use airport gates and facilities. ★ The design and installation of the luggage system cost about $ 230m million and they had to pay $ 340m in interest but were unable to pay due to the delay in opening the airport.
