THE WORD DEMOCRACY IS DERIVED FROM TWO
GREEK WORDS, DEMOS OR DEMOSE MEANING
‘PEOPLE’ AND KRATEIN OR KRATIA MEANING
‘RULE’. THUS, IT IMPLIES THE ‘RULE OF THE
PEOPLE’.

Greek philosopher CLEON defined democracy in

“that shall be democracy which shall be of the
people, by the people, for the people.”
Aristotle (384-322B.c) “a government of many”.
Sir John Seeley” government in which everyone
has a share”.
Barker-” democracy is a mode of spirit and an
attitude of the mind.
CHARACTERISTICS
 Democracy is a way of life. It is an approach to various problems.
 It as a form of govt. is based on the consent of the people.
 Equality, liberty, tolerance, justice, and decentralization are the watch
words of democracy.
 It represents the will of the people, people are sovereign.
 People elect those representatives who represent their needs and
aspiration.
 These representatives form laws for the people.
 Elections are held regularly.
 Citizens enjoys fundamental rights.
 It has faith in the goodness and rationality of man.
 It recognizes the importance of the dignity of man.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEMOCRACY
AND EDUCATION
UEC explained relation between democracy and
education” democracy affirms that each individual
has a unique adventure of life. The function of
education is guidance of this adventure for the
realization of the potentialities of each individual”.
Prof. K.G.saiyidain explains the functions of
education and democracy in his book education,
culture, and social order in these words” education
must be so oriented that it will develop the basic
qualities of character which are necessary for the
functioning of the democratic life.”

CONCLUSION
Democracy is said to be the best form of
government. It allows every citizen of the
country to cast vote and choose their leaders
irrespective of their caste, color, creed,
religion or gender. The government is elected
by the common people of the country and it
won’t be wrong to say that it is their wisdom
and awareness that determines the success
or failure of the government.

MEANING OF DEMOCRACYDEMOCRACY IS A LIFE AND NOT ONLY A POLITICAL SYSTEM. IN VIEW OF THE RESPECT FOR THE DIGNITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND HIS FULL DEVELOPMENT IT IS FELT THAT DEMOCRACY IS THE ONLY INSTRUMENT FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THIS OBJECTIVE. THE WORD DEMOCRACY IS DERIVED FROM TWO GREEK WORDS, DEMOS OR DEMOSE MEANING ‘PEOPLE’ AND KRATEIN OR KRATIA MEANING ‘RULE’. THUS, IT IMPLIES THE ‘RULE OF THE PEOPLE’.

DEFINITIONS Greek philosopher CLEON defined democracy in 422BC- “that shall be democracy which shall be of the people, by the people, for the people.” Aristotle (384-322B.c) “a government of many”. Sir John Seeley” government in which everyone has a share”. Barker-” democracy is a mode of spirit and an attitude of the mind.
  • 5. CHARACTERISTICS  Democracy is a way of life. It is an approach to various problems.  It as a form of govt. is based on the consent of the people.  Equality, liberty, tolerance, justice, and decentralization are the watch words of democracy.  It represents the will of the people, people are sovereign.  People elect those representatives who represent their needs and aspiration.  These representatives form laws for the people.  Elections are held regularly.  Citizens enjoys fundamental rights.  It has faith in the goodness and rationality of man.  It recognizes the importance of the dignity of man.

  • 7. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEMOCRACY AND EDUCATION UEC explained relation between democracy and education” democracy affirms that each individual has a unique adventure of life. The function of education is guidance of this adventure for the realization of the potentialities of each individual”. Prof. K.G.saiyidain explains the functions of education and democracy in his book education, culture, and social order in these words” education must be so oriented that it will develop the basic qualities of character which are necessary for the functioning of the democratic life.”

AIM OF EDUCATION  Training students in the art of living together.  Development of the capacity to think clearly.  Development of the capacity to receive new ideas.  Development of the ability to think rationally and scientifically.  Development of tolerance.  Development of true patriotism.  Development of the qualities of leadership.

  • 12. DEMOCRACY AND DISCIPLINE.  Discipline becomes self- discipline.  No place for “flogging”.  Students participation in running some of the affairs of the students.  Student self- government.
  • 13. DEMOCRACY AND THE TEACHER. Teacher as a guide and helper Teacher as a friend. Creation of a healthy environment. Student-centered teaching process. Very few do’s and don'ts. Teacher as a believer in the theory of ‘impression rather than repression’.

FUNCTION OF SCHOOL ON INCULCATING DEMOCRATIC VALUES IN THE STUDENTS.  Development of individuality.  Individual differences of children  Provision for diversified courses.  Respect of the individuality of the child.  Constructive and creative activities.  Social activities.  Learning by experience.  Stress on cooperation.  Manual work.  International understanding.
  • 15. CONCLUSION Democracy is said to be the best form of government. It allows every citizen of the country to cast vote and choose their leaders irrespective of their caste, color, creed, religion or gender. The government is elected by the common people of the country and it won’t be wrong to say that it is their wisdom and awareness that determines the success or failure of the government.
