The term Democracy is made of two Greek
words “Demos” and “Kratein”
which means Public and Government.
According to Prof. Cile, “Democracy is that
structure in which every individual has a role
in the government’’.
According to Abraham Lincoln:
Democracy is the government of
the people, by the people and for the
people.
In democracy there are freedom
and discipline go together.
According to Bode,
‘Democracy is a way of life’.
Democracy as a way of life
provides opportunity to
people to develop their
personality .
Fundamentals

Democracy
Respect for the personality of
the individual:
In a democratic set up, the
individual personality is given more
respect than any other material
object. It means that every
opportunity is given to the individual
to develop himself and to enjoy
freedom.
Justice and opportunity for development:
The democracy provides opportunity to every
individual to develop himself (or) herself. This is
called equality of opportunity. It also requires that
certain other conditions such as freedom, Social
Justice and equality before law should be
guaranteed. .
Consciousness about duties and obligations:-
In a democratic society, simply demand for rights is
not correct. Democracy requires duties and rights.
There do not exist rights without duties.
Freedom of thought, speech
and conscience:
Democracy is based on the
concept of granting freedom to the
citizens of thought, speech,
conscience and faith. They are free
to think in their own way and
express their views boldly but this
freedom does not allow them the
liberty to disturb freedom of others.
There is no question of forcing
one’s views upon other.
