Rolling out an institution-wide learner analytics system presents many challenges. System and data challenges abound, legal and ethical issues arise, and stakeholder engagement can feel like an uphill struggle.
The University of Essex is in the third year of a four-year project to introduce staff and student dashboards across all its departments and is ready to share some insights and experiences. Following a year-long pilot, the Learner Engagement Activity Portal (LEAP) is now being used by staff and students across multiple campuses. Now that student engagement information is at their fingertips, academic staff are being asked to understand and use this data to inform decisions about how to best support students and different models for using student engagement data in academic departments are emerging.
This session will give an overview of the Essex project, discuss how some of the many challenges have been overcome and highlight the need for developing the digital skills of academic staff to take advantage of the richer set of student data available via a learner analytics solution.

This session will provide an overview of the digital transformation work undertaken at Staffordshire University over the last 12 months, with a particular emphasis on the digital learning project and the Digital Diagnostic tool which has been developed.
This online tool allows all staff to self-assess their current level of digital capability, provides an overall 'score' and directs them to relevant development and training material available at the university.
Best Practices in Online Academic Advising Delivery
The Global Community for Academic Advising (NACADA) has identified the need to educate advisors on how to effectively implement technology into their practice. The NACADA Technology in Advising Commission continues to thrive to support new initiatives and tap into the advising needs for the profession. During the 2009 NACADA Winter Institute, the first hands-on, interactive NACADA Technology Seminar (Pasquini, Steele, Stoller & Thurmond, 2009) introduced participants to a conversation about technology in advising. NACADA continues to support online webinars to share expertise and resources throughout the United States, and across the globe. Other examples of online NACADA development and training initiatives can be found on commission group wikis, regional blogs, slide sharing websites, NACADA Facebook group page and daily on the NACADA Twitter stream.
Overall, a renewed emphasis for collaborative, online engagement in the higher education community is evolving to develop new forms of interaction and assessment. Participants will learn and share examples of online advising delivery being utilized in the advising practice. Session facilitators will share their experience advising with social networks, IM, web conferencing, podcasts, slidecasting, and other online resources. The growing use of social media and online tools, combined with collective intelligence and mass involvement, is gradually but deeply changing the practice of learning (The Horizon Report 2008). Electronic technologies can create a change in pedagogy for students, staff and faculty connected to the advising process. Advising units need to think about online advising development that includes increased participation, self-paced learning design, and continual assessment and feedback.
Learning from your students and their data
Jisc aims to support UK education and research communities through digital transformation. It focuses on student digital experience, learning analytics, and providing architecture and services to support learning analytics. Learning analytics applies techniques like machine learning and data mining to help students and institutions meet their goals by improving retention, achievement, and employability. It can identify at-risk students, encourage help-seeking, and analyze which interventions are effective. Jisc's learning analytics project provides a code of practice, toolkit, and student app to support institutions in adopting learning analytics approaches.

Teaching staff are facing increasing demands to do more than use digital technology to improve pedagogy. The challenge now includes anticipating the digital capabilities that students will need in their future workplace and preparing them to thrive in that rapidly evolving environment.
Through our experience of delivering the building digital capability service and related courses we are developing an awareness of different approaches and mechanisms being used to embed digital capability in the curriculum. Some examples are generic in that they can be applied across the whole organisation whereas others are highly specialised and subject specific.

Transforming organisational culture

This demonstration will provide a walkthrough of the Jisc digital capability tool and suite of resources to support organisational approaches to digital capability.
ITS Strategic Plan 2016-2020 Booklet
The ITS Strategic Plan 2016-2020 outlines goals and objectives to guide the ITS Division in supporting students, faculty and staff at CSUSB over the next four years. The plan was developed through a collaborative process involving presentations, forums, meetings and surveys with campus stakeholders. Feedback was organized into operational, tactical and strategic categories, with the strategic plan focusing on the latter. The five strategic goals address strengthening online support and instruction, improving customer service, enhancing analytics, ensuring stable infrastructure, and increasing community engagement. Objectives under each goal are aligned with the university's strategic plan and CSU trustee initiatives. Implementation of the plan will help ITS support the academic mission of CSUSB.

Despite efforts to address intellectual property rights and copyright over the past decade, attitudes remain an inhibiting factor in adopting innovative teaching and research strategies. The importance of intellectual property rights in the digital environment has exacerbated this, requiring more than superficial acknowledgement of legal compliance. One academic found that reviewing material for a course left little remaining due to copyright sensitive images, and that meeting intellectual property requirements meant drastic changes losing academic credibility. There is currently a failure to adequately train academics and staff on intellectual property rights through staff development processes.
Rowan Wilson - Developing Sustainable OER Release Models

Me Aggregator Project Overview
MeAggregator is a user-owned technology demonstrator that aims to make it easier for learners to manage their digital content and identity using a distributed file system and trust network, with an open source and service-oriented architecture. Initial findings found that loosely coupled components can be robust but hard to debug, users had creative uses for the tool, and it is important to build community from the start which requires resources. The key takeaway is to re-evaluate the approach and not be afraid to change course if needed.
Effective use of Social Software Study

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
