The social classroom
This is a presentation I gave for a visiting delegation of Chinese academics. It's about how we incorporate social technologies in our teaching. The slides are pretty bare-bones, as having an interpreter meant I couldn't talk at my usual fifty miles a minute... so less content than normal.
It was really fun talking about using social media in teaching with this audience - given the restrictions on access to social media in China.

During this keynote presentation on March 29, 2013 at Western Illinois University Symposium on Teaching, Research, and Creative Activities by Jason Rhode, we considered how students today are using social media in their daily lives and explore together how social media can be used to actively engage students in the learning process, both in and outside the classroom. A social teaching framework was shared as well as principles and best practices for leveraging social media in teaching and learning. Participants were encouraged to bring their own device to actively participate in the conversation!

Social media is becoming increasingly integrated into K-12 education. It allows students to connect, communicate, and collaborate both locally and globally when used appropriately. However, schools must thoughtfully plan social media use and educate students on digital citizenship and managing their digital footprint. Effective social media policies and guidelines are needed to address legal issues like copyright and ensure proper use while still encouraging creativity and engagement. When implemented correctly, social media can be a valuable tool to prepare students for today's digital world.

Visualising social computing output: Mapping student blogs and tweets
This chapter provides a case study in the development of a data mining approach to assess blogging and micro-blogging (or ‘tweets’) in a higher education setting. Data mining is the use of computational algorithms to analyse large datasets, and this chapter describes the use of the Leximancer software tool to perform a conceptual analysis of the blogs and tweets published by students in an undergraduate course about social media. A Leximancer analysis is represented visually as a ‘concept map’ showing the relationships between the concepts and ideas drawn out of the data automatically, rather than using pre-defined terms and keywords. In this chapter, Leximancer is used to produce a concept map of the student blogs and tweets to enhance evaluation of the students’ conceptual understanding of the syllabus, as well as more general observations about the use of these social media tools in higher education. This suggests a possible approach to analysing the potentially large volume of text-based information that can be produced by students in these social computing settings.

Despite efforts to address intellectual property rights and copyright over the past decade, attitudes remain an inhibiting factor in adopting innovative teaching and research strategies. The importance of intellectual property rights in the digital environment has exacerbated this, requiring more than superficial acknowledgement of legal compliance. One academic found that reviewing material for a course left little remaining due to copyright sensitive images, and that meeting intellectual property requirements meant drastic changes losing academic credibility. There is currently a failure to adequately train academics and staff on intellectual property rights through staff development processes.
Rowan Wilson - Developing Sustainable OER Release Models
