Solomon said it best.
âTrust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways ac-
knowledge him, and he will make straight your pathsâ (Proverbs 3:5-6).
This is a powerful truth and one that I have memorized. Sometimes, the words do not make it from my
heart to my mind. Sometimes they do not travel into my hands and my feet. Sometimes I seek to follow
them in pride. Sometimes I read the passage like this:
âI have trusted in the Lord with all my heart. I have not leaned on my own understanding! I have acknowl-
edged God in all my ways, and I have stayed on the straight and narrow.â
This results in pride. Pride was never the purpose, but so often it has been the ugly result. This is why Solo-
mon handled pride following these beautiful verses:
âBe not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evilâ (Proverbs 3:7).
Trying to follow the Lord in pride is counterintuitive. It will lead to the opposite of God, being presented as
evil. It is not just a command, it is a warning to preserve life. Pride in self only leads to hurting self. If pride
is carried out, anxiety is sure to follow! Pressure to achieve more greatness will become overwhelming.
This pressure will be placed beyond self and projected onto others.
Solomon later penned, âThe highway of the upright turns aside from evil; whoever guards his way pre-
serves his life. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. It is better to be of a lowly
spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. Whoever gives thought to the word will dis-
cover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lordâ (Proverbs 16:17-20).
Competition with your past achievements will only lead to a work-based faith that cannot and should not
be maintained. It will lead to competition with others and anyone else who achieves recognition will spur
you on to outdo them. Pride destroys.
Solomon explained that when we turn away from pride and the evils that follow,
âIt will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bonesâ (Proverbs 3:8).
âLet love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affec-
tion. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the
Lordâ (Romans 12:9-11).
âDo nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than your-
selves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of othersâ (Philippians
2:3-4).
