Someone said recently that 2022 just sounds like 2020 Too. It was meant to be a joke, but it raised a thought about the coming year that we would do well to address. We do not know what will come in any new day, let alone a new year. “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then van- ishes” (James 4:13-14) Whatever will be, will be. Whatever comes, let it come. I am reminded of the words of Job as he sat in anguish and ashes. He responded to Zophar with the famous phrase, “Come what may.” “Let me have silence, and I will speak, and let come on me what may. Why should I take my flesh in my teeth and put my life in my hand? Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face. This will be my salvation, that the godless shall not come before him (Job 13:13-16). Job knew he was going to use each moment to serve God, regardless of the pain he felt. Regardless of the circumstances he faced. All we know about life is that we are a mist. Here today and gone tomorrow. We will do well to live for something that will not pass away. To live for what is timeless. Live for God. James finished his discourse about the brevity of life with holding to the Giver of life. “Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’ As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin” (James 4:15-17). So, I will still serve God if 2022 is 2020 too.
