4. 1. Deepwater diverter system
Used on the majority of floating rigs
Complete open-hole shutoff with 20”
through-bore
Rated 1,000 psi for closure on 5” drill pipe;
500 psi for closure on open hole
10 second closing time on pipe or open
hole
Housing accommodates large diameter
riser buoyancy modules
High capacity systems available for
supporting the Riser String from Diverter
Housing in emergency hang-off situations
5. 2.1 Spider
Hydraulic-gate riser spider
is used when running or
retrieving riser joints
through the rotary table
Riser handling spider
supports the riser string
on manual or hydraulically
operated sliding dogs
6. 2.2 Riser Gimbal
Gimbal shock absorber
supports up to 2,000,000
lb and gimbals when the
riser is positioned in the
spider
Reduces impact loads
when running and landing
marine riser joints
7. 3.1 Riser connector
Easy stabbing, fast makeup, and positive
alignment
Suitable for operating in water depths up
to 7,500 ft depending on environmental
and well control conditions; MR-10
designs can operate in depths to 10,000
ft.
Preloaded connection significantly
reduces the range of alternating stresses
induced by cyclic loading to improve
fatigue life
Primary load path for tensile and bending
loads through the dogs and into the body,
does not impact actuating screws
8. 3.2 API Riser Coupling Class
API Riser
Coupling Class
Tensile capacity in
millions of pounds
Class A .5
Class B 1
Class C 1.25
Class D 1.5
Class E 2
Class F 2.5
Class H 3.5
API RP 2R establishes riser coupling classes based on the
tensile capacity of the coupling. These are;
9. 3.3 Riser coupling
Ideal for deep water applications
where high load operating
conditions exist
Stepped diameter design of pin
and box simplifies engagement,
even with severe vessel
movement
No loose parts preventing bolt loss
and potential thread damage
Field removable and replaceable
nose piece
Locking bolts preloaded in excess
of rated coupling loads to extend
fatigue load of riser system

14. 5. Telescopic Joint
Compensates for heave and
offset of the vessel
Maximum rated riser tensile
load capacity in locked
position
Hydraulic latch release for
inner and outer barrels
available
Dual split/solid packer
elements
Fixed or rotating integral/non-
integral tensioner rings
15. 6.1 Riser support ring
The Type Riser Tensioner Ring
shown saves time because the riser
tensioner cables are never
disconnected.
When the riser is pulled the
tensioner ring will be carried up to
the bottom of the diverter housing.
Hydraulic latches release the ring
from the slip joint and permit it to be
locked onto the diverter housing
using another set of hydraulic latch
dogs. The rest of the riser is
retrieved through its center.
16. 6.2 Tension ring
Telescopic Joint is run and pulled through the rotary table
without disconnecting the tensioning lines from riser tensiong
ring
Riser tensioning lines remain properly spaced out at all times
Hydraulic piping for lockdown/storage dogs remains
permanently connected
Hydraulically disconnects from telescopic joint and locks to a
mating profile on the bottom of the diverter housing for
convenient, out-of-the-way storage
17. 6.3 Ultra deep tension ring
Forms a termination point between the riser
tensioner and the marine riser system
Simplifies running and retrieving marine
riser by eliminating makeup/breakout of
tensioner lines and hydraulic hoses in the
moon pool area
Choke, kill, and auxiliary line terminations
permanently connected
Orientation pins on the ring engage slots in
telescopic joint line termination housing for
easy makeup
Permanently installed tensioner lines
maintain proper orientation with rig drilling
tensioners
18. 7. Intermediate Flex Joint
Installed below the telescopic joint
Up to 2.5 million lb tensile load capacity
Angular deflection to 20 °on either side of its axial
center while subjected to tensile loading and
internal pressure of 1500 psi
Intermediate Flex Joint shown uses a KT ring and no termination joint.
20. 10. Single flex joint
Installed in the LMRP below the
riser/BOP Stack Interface
Uses a combination elastomeric
bearing and seal unit to eliminate
the need for a pressure balanced
ball and socket interface with
seals
Up to 2 million lb tensile load
capacity
Rated for H2S service and oil-
based drilling mud
Angular deflection to 10° on either
side of its axial center while
subjected to tensile loading and
internal pressures up to 3000 psi
Pressure balance and lubrication
systems not required
