Pandora s myth includes the first human woman in Greek mythology created by the
gods Hephaestus and Athena as prompted by Zeus. Pandora was delivered to
Prometheus brother as a bride. Zeus gives her a jar filled with various evils as a
wedding present; however, an important condition given by Zeus was that she was
forbidden to open it. Her thoughts were overwhelmed by the possibilities that could
be within the jar. One day, out of curiosity, Pandoraopens the box and releases all
evils into the world. After noticing what she had done, she traps Hope inside of the

Zeus true plan for keeping including Hope as an evil within the jar is not to leave a
positive thought for mortals to endure as they suffer. Hope is meant to connect
with an absurdist idea of life being meaningless due to it keeping mortals on a
constant search for future satisfaction rather than satisfaction during their current
life. For instance, during the time of the ancient myth, there weren t many
occurrences to incorporate a need of hope for; however, in the modern world, hope
is significant amongst mortals as they feel it is all they have during difficult times
such as the major effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mortals felt that hope was
the only idea that remained after they had lost everything. During a devastating
occurrence such as Hurricane Katrina, hope is appropriate in order for those
affected by the devastation to feel as if they have something positive to expect after
such a tragic event. Some acted on their instinct and appropriate response in order to
make their hopeful future come true by moving away from the disastrous area while
others relied on hope to protect them as they stayed around the same area of the
previous disaster. Their life could slowly become meaningless as they are in constant
fear of the disaster occurring once

9. South Korea s Historical Struggle With Tyrannical Rule
Essay
AbstractConsidering South Korea s historical struggle with tyrannical rule, the nation
has become quite a democratic force, mirroring its European and American
counterparts. Being a country that caters to different values, cultures, and social
structures, there are some considerable differences of their Criminal Justice System,
specifically their criminal procedures, policing, and prison populations. However, due
to their adaption of Western legal traditions there are similar marks within South
Koreas laws and constitution. Introduction
In the face of the initial plan of a unified Korea in the 1943 Cairo Declaration,
intensifying Cold War resentment between the Soviet Union and the United States, as
well as tensions within Korea with the Korean War, eventually led to the
establishment of separate governments, each with its own system, and to the division
of Korea into two political entities in 1948: North Korea and South Korea (Gohar,
1988). South Korea is a relatively small nation in the east located in the Southern
portion of the Korean Peninsula; it shares a properly guarded border with North
Korea, a communistic nation. To give more geographical perspective, South Korea
is surrounded by the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan, in which its namesake is not
too far off in the southeastern direction. With a population of around 50 million
people, more than half of its people is located in the country s capital, Seoul (Joo,

13. Utilitarianism In Little Women By Louisa May Alcott
Little Women
By:
Louisa May Alcott
A Victorian literature characteristic shown in Little Women is utilitarianism. This
is shown throughout the book as the four girls, Meg, Beth, Jo, and Amy were so
kind and often tried to do things that make others happy and don t expect anything
in return. This characteristic is evident when Beth said I ll tell you what we ll do,
let s each get her (their dear mother) something for Christmas, and not get anything
for ourselves (6). In this scene, the four sisters, who get along beautifully, were
sitting by the fire and when they notice how worn out their mother s slippers were.
Initially, they didn t get any gifts or presents for Christmas since their father was
away at war and they had to save money so they decided to use a little of their hard
earned money to each buy something for themselves. But after seeing the condition
of Marmee s slippers, they decide to use their own money to buy something nice for
their mother. This quote shows utilitarianism because the Beth, Meg, Jo, and Amy all
give up their own hard earned money to do something nice and considerate for
someone else. Essentially, the four loving sisters thought of doing something to make
someone happy and put themselves aside for a while.
Another Victorian literature characteristic shown in this book is social classstructure.
This is evident throughout the entire novel because Meg, Beth, Jo, Amy, and Marmee
are all quite poor and face many different issues
14. Social Reform Movement Analysis
To begin, the reforming impulse toward social reform had deep political and
religious roots. As more and more people began to have the opportunity to take part in
voting, critics argued that the American society still wasn t becoming more
democratic. Pointing to the promise of liberty and equality in the Declaration of
Independence, they asserted that a true democracy wouldn t permit slavery. Saying
this, in the Second Great Awakening during the colonial era, the majority of
American Protestants believed in predestination. According to this belief, God chose
the people who would attain salvation after death in advance. The impact was that
people didn t think they could do anything to reach salvation. So, in the early 1800s, a

Even though they didn t have many successes, the sisters protested for good reasons.
At the time, women weren t allowed to vote or hold office. If a woman worked

women s rights leaders was born into slavery in New York. Isabella came to believe
that God wanted her to fight for freedom after gaining it herself. With complete
dedication to sojourn, better known as traveling, she was entitled as Sojourner Truth.
Other abolitionists, Mott and Stanton, also turned to the cause of women s rights.
Mott used her organizing skills to set up petition drives across the North, while
Stanton overcome the struggles of not having a caring father. After returning from the
World s Antislavery Convention in London, they took up the cause of women s rights
with committed spirits. Moving forth, the Seneca Falls Convention modeled the
Declaration of Independence proclaiming, We hold these truths to be self evident:
that all men and women are created equal. The men and women here voted for
solutions that demanded equality for women at work, at school, and at church as

women women would be able to vote. Fortunately, the resolution passed! Ultimately,
the convention marked the start of an organized campaign for
15. Cattle Farming Safe For All Humanity
As we know there are differences between locally grown, organic, and grass fed
beef, however, farmer working conditions are not so different. Grass fed farms
feed their cattle the closest they can to a natural diet of year round pasture grazing
and substitutes such as; alfalfa and hay in the offseason. On organic farms,
workers strive to follow the USDA guidelines and prepare for yearly inspections.
Local, also known as, independent farmers may choose to raise their cattle
organically, by natural grass feeding or mixed. These farms raise large herds but not
nearly as large as conventional factory farms. On Organic farms, long hours and hard
work are spent ensuring the land is certified organic, the cattle are served only
organic feed, and that the cattle graze every day, all year. On organic farms, there is
no use of hormones, antibiotics or other hazardous contributions. Deeming these
methods of cattle farming safe for all humanity. Independent farmers withstand long
hours and strenuous tasks to ensure cattle are raised humanely and the environment
is, for the most part, unharmed. It is very common for these farms to be family
owned and employed. Proper handling and safety methods become almost second
nature for family members. During the hiring process, background knowledge of
raising cattle and use of farm equipment are key. There is much work involved

The Holocaust, a genocide which lasted from 1942 to 1945 in which around 6
million European Jewish people were killed, was the result of the Ideals of the the
past chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler. Hitler came into power by capitalising on
world wide events such as the great depression in 1929 resulting from the Wall Street
crash. He began spreading his ideals of anti semitism to the German population in
preparation for the Final Solution , which became known as the Holocaustwith the
assistance of propaganda, violence, and an economic boycott. Most of the impacts
resulting from his methods proved to be extremely valuable to the success of the
preparation as they efficiently and effectively brainwashed a hateful image of the
Jewish population into the minds of the German people and aligned them with
Hitler s ideals of anti Semitism. However, some of his methods did were not
valuable to preparing the German people as they were not able to depict a hateful
image of the Jews.
Propaganda was arguably one of the most effective ways for ideas to be spread
around rapidly, In his autobiography, Mien Kampf, Hitler states: Propaganda tries
to force a doctrine on the whole people..... Propaganda works on the general public
from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea. It
shows that Hitler understood the effectiveness of propaganda and used it to spread
his anti Semitist ideals towards the German people to create a negative image of the

Part 3 Data and Methodology
3.1 Data Description The purpose of this study is to investigate the presence of
January effect in emerging stock markets of four Southeast Asia countries: Malaysia,
Thailand, Philippine and Indonesia, for the period of January 2012 until December
2015, which is the most recent period after the financial crisis in 2007 2008. The
financial crisis would affect the behaviour of the stock markets and thus the stock
price might not reflect its true value. As the most recent economic crisis is believed
to have ended in Fall 2011 (Elliott 2011; Weisenthal 2013), this study will focus on
the most recent 4 year period, from January 2012 until December 2015. The four
Southeast Asia countries are selected because there are limited studies about them.
Furthermore, they are the only Southeast Asia countries being included in MSCI
Emerging Markets Index as of 2016. Thus it is worth examining the efficiency of the
stock markets of these high growth emerging markets.
Daily equity market indices for four Southeast Asia countries will be collected
from Yahoo Finance and DataStream. The daily price index is collected instead of

stronger on the first five days of January. The indices are FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI

22. Classical Conditioning Analysis
I am scared of dogs, cats, rats, hamsters, pretty much any animal that moves. Now I
was not born with this phobia, I learned it through classical conditioning. Classical
conditioning is when one thing leads to another. So for instance, you probably heard
of the joke of dripping water (unconditioned stimuli) makes you want to pee
(unconditioned response). Well your brain made a connection that whenever it hears
dripping water (conditioned stimuli); your bladder muscle is relaxed (conditioned
response). So every time you have to pee, hearing dripping water makes your bladder
want to release the tension automatically. Now unlike other type of learning, classical
conditioningis automatic and it generalizes to many things meaning it is hard to...

It was a noon. I was playing on the playground just minding my own business when
I heard a bark. My body all of a sudden became tense, my heart started punching and
pounding like a piston inside an engine. I was on top of the slide, so I started to
scan all around me for a dog, until I saw it. It looked like a 60 80 lb. dog with black
hair, long neck, long nose and sharp teeth. It came closer and closer to the
playground and then just like the first dog I met it started barking over and over
and over. I was stuck, I felt like I was in a sinking ship with sharks swarming
around it. I just stood there without moving a muscle in the hops that I will
somehow camouflage with my surroundings. It didn t work. That day I was a
prisoned for almost 20 minutes before the dog decided I wasn t worth this much time
and left. I was not sure if this was a trap so just to make sure it really was gone I
stayed an extra 15 minutes. After that experience I did not go outside for a whole 2
weeks. My fear of dogs can be traced back to this moment but fear of cats not so
much. The place I was at did not have any cats but a few years later when we
moved I discovered my fear of cats. Even though cats are easily scared and mind
there own business majority of the time, I still did not like them, they make me feel
unease, as thought they are going to start barking at any moment. And before
23. Latino Immigrants
Immigrants have played a vital role in the cultural and economic growth of the United
States. Many of these individuals view the US as a land of educational opportunities,
some even considering higher education (Rivera, 2014). Although immigrants leave
their native countries in hopes of a better life, they experience displacement from
their native culture through physical dislocation (Fox, 2007). These immigrants are
overcome with challenges pertaining to immigrant stressors, such as discrimination,
as well as educational and political challenges. Specifically, those from Latin
countries often lose their drive to better themselves and often times, accept a place in
poverty (Arellanes, Viramontez Anguiano Lohman, 2017). However, there are some
Latino immigrants, who regardless of these negative circumstances, are able to
showcase persistence in the face of adversity. This study will explore examples of
these individuals, specifically, three Latina immigrants who persevered despite
challenging obstacles and were ultimately able to complete higher education.
Latino Immigrants
From the beginning of its development, America has drawn in immigrants from all
over the world. Between the years 1990 and 2000, a majority of these immigrants
arrived from Mexico and Central America (Wainer, 2004). As of 2011, up to 40
percent of Latinos living in the US were foreign born (Rocha and Matsubayashi,
2012). Due to this rise in the Latino population, Latino adolescents are the

During the Iran Contra affair the public, as well as congress, were left in the dark
about a deal was made with the enemy country of Iran to sell weapons to them to
aid in their war with Iraq. Once sold the Profit were given to the Contras in
Nicaragua. I will be arguing that advertising dollars, using the military as a source,
and flak were used to skew the public s perception of how the affair took place.
When all of this began President Reagan had told Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North,
who also worked as the head of the National Security Council, that he needed a way
to get Iranback on our side after the fall of their previous leader Mohammad Reza
Shah Pahlavi, known as The Shah . While The Shah was in power Iran was one of

Now North had to find a way to both help the president fulfill his desire of getting
Iran back on our side and helping the Anti Communist regime down in south
America. So North, along with other government officials, sold the 12.5 million
dollars worth of weapons to Iran for 30 million. To avoid detection the 12.5 million
was transferred into an American bank account while the remaining profit of 17.5
million was transfer to a Swiss bank account. From there the money was wired to the
Contras and used in the war effort. Once this information had started spreading
throughout the American public artist began to make work based on the Conflict
as both a way of raising awareness and to put blame on those who are responsible.
When looking at Steve Greenberg s work you see he is focusing on President
Reagan and adding in type that is an American citizen s point of view on how that
affair took place. Each from does not play out second to second but more in one
motion then the next used as a way to show a longer period of time passing.
President Reagan was known for always having jelly beans on his desk so that
artist uses that as a way for the viewer to recognize who it is without writing it
somewhere on the page. This was one of multiple pieces of work Greenburg did as a
way of letting the American people know that even though he may not be taking
blame for it, the President knew what was happening. Others

The Joys of Motherhood
Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart, and Buchi Emecheta s The Joys of Motherhood,
are two novels that emphasize the complexities of relationships between parents and
their children. In Achebe s story, the protagonist of the novel, Okonkwo, has distant
relationships with his children (particularly Nwoye and Ezinma) because their father
sees them as inadequate in many ways. Okonkwo has high expectations of his
children, especially Nwoye, his eldest son and often finds fault in almost everything
he does. Okonkwo resents the fact that the child he feels has the most promise is his
daughter Ezinma. Her strength of character is ... Show more content on

Nwoye, Okonkwo s oldest son, causes him great concern because Okonkwo sees
him as lazy. He sees Nwoye as inadequate to his standards of how a son should be
and Achebe illustrates this early on in the novel, At any rate, that was how it
looked to his father, and he sought to correct that by constant nagging and beating.
And so Nwoye was developing into a sad faced youth, (10). Okonkwo is so critical
of his son s behavior that he even beats and criticizes Nwoye because he does not
like his father s masculine stories of violence and gore as much as he likes the
stories his mother tells him, stories that are more female oriented in Okonkwo s
eyes. Nwoye seeks his father s approval so much that he pretends to like the stories
his father tells him. As Achebe states, ...he knew that his father wanted him to be a
man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women s stories. And when he
did this he saw that his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked him or beat him,
(38).
Early in The Joys of Motherhood, Nnu Ego is forced to work so that she can feed
herself and her children. The Meers have decided to return to England and Nnaife
has found a job aboard a ship heading to Fernando Po. Soldiers tell Nnu Ego that she
must leave the compound. With her husband away, Nnu Ego, pregnant with her
second son Adim, leaves with her first son Oshia to go earn money for their survival.
26. Analysis Of She Walks In Beauty By George Gordon Byron
George Gordon Byron is probably one of the best known English romantic poets.
Although Byron s poetry was prominent urging the era he was writing, it was also
often considered as immoral. Lord Byron s She Walks in Beauty is regarded as one
of his loveliest short lyric poems ; his use of imagery, symbolism, and rhyme
scheme allows the reader to experience the perfection of love. George Gordon Byron,
also known as Lord Byron was born in London. He was born January 22, 1788.
Byron was the biological son to Catherine Gordon and Captain John Mad Jack
Byron. He was born with a clubbed foot. When Byron was little he tried to get it
corrected. He had a crazy doctor that gave him traumatic treatments. After going
through the pain, doctors then prescribed a corrective boot. Byron barely wore it
though. In 1789 Byron moved in with his mom. She was emotionally unstable
which took a toll on Byron. While getting his foot looked at and worked on a
Presbyterian nurse got Byron to find a love for the Bible. When young he got into
school, which helped him find the passion to read, and a passion for history. These
experiences started his love for writing in the 1800s (poetryfoundation.org). Lord
Byron started writing in the 1800s. He was a poet that wrote Romance poems. Byron
was so into this style of writing, because everything he wrote about pertained to his
life
Cutlip 2 and feelings about certain things. This made him very popular. Romance was
not a huge topic. Byron started to

There is a linear pattern in the Northern Hemisphere of countries with high female
literacy rates. There is also a similar linear pattern in the southern hemisphere, across
southern South America, southern Africa, and Oceania.

Mali, all have under 61% of women who can read and write. For example, only
23% of women can read and write in Benin. This is also the case in the Middle East,
where countries such as Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and India all have under 76% of
women that can read. For example, in Yemen, only 30% of women can read and

28. Analysis Of The Community Is Anomic, By Kirst Ashman
Watts Community is anomic, According to Kirst Ashman (2014) anomic refers to a
failed community which is dysfunctional and provides little social support. An
anomic community has not or does not take advantage of outside linkages; there is
no sense of belonging to the community. Some conditions that illustrate the Watts
neighborhood is anomic are the residentsof the communitylive in fear and do not trust
each other. The community fails to address persistent problems poverty,
unemployment, and lack of financial resources for education. Also, the community
was alienated and isolated from interacting with other sections of the city. They lived
in poor housing conditions. Gangs, guns, crime, destruction, and drugs surrounded
the neighborhood. There was no investment in the schools or the children of the
community. The community was not in harmony with each other. Through
stratification, political discrimination occurred, based on their wealth and social,
economic status. Residents of the city lacked purpose which brought on depression.
There is no identity among the citizens. Oppression, discrimination, and unjust
treatment are just a few issues that plagued the community. Researchers Williams and
Kristin (2010) states historically, trauma is the result of stressful events that
overwhelms an individual ability to cope with stressors and life events. African
Americans suffered from multiple injuries as a result of slavery, racism, and

he/she may like to invest in stocks. However, buying stocks also entails risk because
of price fluctuation. The risk will be potentially large in case price falls to zero. In
order to avoid risk one may like to buy a call option.

30. Leading By Examples
Leading by example is no fictional idea. Vocabulary.com describes a leader as the
one in charge, the person who convinces other people to follow (Leader). Examples
of leadership are shown all through history, sports, and even in school districts.
Famous protesters and leaders in history made a difference when they led by
example, the coach of a sports team is necessary for that team s success, and groups
like Student Council are all examples of leadership. There is leadership everywhere,
and far off from being an idea of fiction; it is a reality.
History has many great leaders that lead as an example for others. Mahatma Gandhi
was maybe the greatest example of leadership in history. Gandhi was thrown off of
a train due to his racial background and he felt like he had to do something about it.
Gandhi decided to stand up and organized the Indian community to help him with
non violent protest. He stood up for what he believed in and lead everyone who
agreed with him. One man, in particular, followed in what Gandhi believed in and
that man was Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr., the leader of the Civil

Sports teams, whether it is school organized or at the national and major leagues,
have someone leading them. It all starts from the beginning of your sports career.
Let us use baseball as an example. The little leagues are where you are taught
everything from how to hit the ball, how to catch the ball and all of the technique
in between. Coaches are who teach and lead the players. They teach each player all
of the techniques because they are being the leaders by example. Without the
coaches to lead the players, then they would not be properly trained and would not
get the proper help when they do not know how to do something. Having someone to

31. The Marketing Environment
Executive Summary
This report aims to discuss the three parts of the marketing environment; The macro
environment, the micro environment and the internal environment in relation to the
Apple Watch which has yet to be released. The report will look at the possibility of
success for the Apple watch in the UK market once it is released and how the levels
of the marketing environment impact this success.
In the report the threat of competitors in the micro environment is stressed as the
most considerable factor in Apple s success with their Apple Watch due to their late
entry in to the market, whilst also considering other factors from both the micro
environment and the internal environment. The role of economic factors,
technological factors and social factors will be discussed in the macro environment
section of this report. In the micro environment the report discusses competitors and
suppliers whilst in the internal environment section, the effect of employees is
spoken about in terms of how they can potentially aid the companies success.

Delisting the Grey Wolf
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service are considering removing the gray wolf
from the endangered species list once Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming have enough
wolves to be deemed sufficient to continue to expand the wolf population, requiring
only that each of these three states have a management plan in effect to prevent the
gray wolf from becoming endangered again. With the current attitude of the
governments in these states, the wolf should not lose their federal support under the
Endangered Species Act as it would merely serve to cause the wolves to become
endangered once again, or at best, held to the absolute minimum population that the

The state legislature has favored the ranching industry above ecology and continues
to do so. Public polls conducted by Boise State indicate that the overwhelming
majority of Idahoans (nearly 70 percent) support wolf restoration (Laverty, par. 4)
and the legislature is seeking to remedy this by re educating the public with a
balanced view of the impact of wolves on big game species, those sectors of the
economy dependent upon sport hunting, livestock, domestic animals, and humans
(State, 3). Furthermore, the cost of wolf reintroduction will be presented as a part of
any public education program including direct and indirect costs (State, 3).
This so called balanced view was presented in a program in which the most
misrepresented issues concerned the economic impact of wolves. Ranchers were
allowed to claim unsubstantiated losses, with no attempt to validate the accuracy of
these claims (Laverty, par. 2). In granting the balanced view sought by the legislature,
the program portrayed the salt of the earth rancher as a poor victim of the federal
government s whim to restore the killers (Laverty, par. 2).
The lies by omission also showed up in this balanced view program, it failed to
expose the enormous subsidies that benefit

Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle in 2008 and Truman Show directed
by Peter Wier in 1998 are two films that feature audiences present within the film as
well as viewers watching the film. Whilst Slumdog Millionaire features the game

is to emphasize real life interactions. Both sets of audiences are manipulated by the
media. Interestingly, at the end of each filmall audiences are reminded of the media
control, yet only in the Truman Showdo the viewers overcome the media
manipulation. In this essay we will analyze key film elements in these two films
which will enable us to understand the importance of the media in manipulating the

occurs. They give out food and water and help provide shelters to those who have
lost their homes. But it has only been in recent years after terrorist attacks on U.S.
soil that Homeland Security has joined this group. This has increased suspicions
towards why a group that was created to fight terrorists would need to be involved
in aiding those who have been in an earthquake or flooding. Few Americans feel that
they have any hope of being able to truly count on their assistance because of this.
But that isn t the only reason. FEMA has been hiding several truths from Americans

High Amount of Losses
Unfortunately, FEMA already knows what most Americans don t. There will be a
huge amount of casualties because so few people are prepared for a state of
emergency to happen. Because of this, they are already prepared to bury thousands
of people with a stash of coffins that they keep handy. Although this sounds cruel, it
should be used as motivation for people to not expect FEMA to be their savior in
case of a disaster. They have to be able to handle situations on their own instead.
As you can see, this organization is highly motivated to work against the American
people, not for them. That is why it is extremely important that people start
preparing now for a possible crisis now. Foods that have a long shelf life and don t
need refrigeration are the most important to have on hand. Freeze dried food can
last for about 25 years, so it is the best to keep. But canned foods that can be easily
heated up are also important in case there isn t enough water to rehydrate it. These
types of foods are all easily found for sale at www.survivalcavefood.com. They come
in airtight containers to avoid pests from getting in them too. And the website has a

35. The Role Of Violence In Early 20th Century Literature
Violence seems so intrinsic to history individuals appear desensitized to the
implications of subtle, vicious, or aggressive physical violence. Can we challenge
emotional reactions or do transcendent principles guide human behavior to justify
violence with reason? In early 20th century literature, violent and hostile acts were
fundamental to a protagonist s resolution; authors used this theme to illustrate the
prevalence of evil and question the effects on society when violencewas tolerated.
These works profoundly impacted the overall societal view on the implication of
violence as evil. Contributed to raising consciousness as well as help change the
perpetual discrimination at the time.

They are successful invaders due to their high adaptability to novel environments
(McClure et al 2015; Michel et al 2017) and food sources (Stolle et al 2015). Wild
pigs also have a high reproductive rate, with females averaging 5.6 fetuses in
Saskatchewan (Koen et al. 2018), though it is important to note that this value is
from a small sample size and was not determined to be statistically significant (Koen
et al. 2018). It is however the only estimation of wild pig reproductive rate available
in Canada. High birth rate plus a quick gestation period that allows pigs to
potentially breed at least twice a year (Bieber Ruf 2005), coupled with the fact that
wild pigs have no natural predators in Canada, population growth and expansion is
inevitable. Pigs are known to be carriers and transmitters of a number of diseases
like swine brucellosis, pseudorabies, and Escherichia coli (Michel et al 2017). All
of which pose potential health risks for not only livestock and wildlife but humans
as well. Second, it is well established that wild pigs contribute to the billions of
dollars in agricultural damage done by invasive species in the United States each
year (McClure et al 2015). While claims of reported crop damage in Canada
associated with wild pigs has been minimal to this point, the ever expanding
populations all but ensure that crop damage claims will increase

40. Machiavellian Politics Essay
Machiavellian politics is infamous for its cutthroat attitude towards rulership and
coming to power. Among its main points are deception, lying, and skullduggery. In
Machiavelli s mind, however, one thing reigns supreme, might. Through sheer power
and wise use of it, anything can be overcome and anyone defeated. When dealing
with the princeof a nation, this sort of conflict usually takes the world stage as war.
To Machiavelli, the ultimate tool, and perhaps the only one needed, that a prince
needs is the art of war.
First in the fourteenth chapter of The Prince , Machiavelli states, The art of war is all
that is expected of a ruler; and it is so useful that besides enabling hereditary princes

Moreover, Machiavelli has good reason to believe that arming yourself for the
eventuality of others coming against you is essential. You are bound to meet
misfortune if you are unarmed because, among other reasons, people despise you,
and this, as I shall say later on, is one of the infamies a prince should be on his
guard against (Machiavelli 48). The reason for this hatred is that without force,
others will wonder why they are beneath you. This confusion about why the one in
charge should be weak and incompetent will lead to, as he says, the prince s
misfortune. The gathering of force, and thus preparation for conflict in the form of
war, is the best deterrent against prospective princes. The more armed the prince is,
the less logical it would seem to revolt against the them. Machiavelli also notes it as
one of the infamies that a prince should constantly be vigilant for, that is, being hated
for your lack of strength yet high position.
Machiavelli continues with the analogy of force as being the main way to maintain
power, whether force being used, or potential force that could be brought against
someone. It is unreasonable to expect that an armed man should obey one who is
unarmed, or that an unarmed man should remain safe and secure when his servants
are armed. (Machiavelli 48). This line draws on the fact that Machiavelli is deeply
distrustful of people, and believes that the only guaranteed way to keep them
41. Theodore Roosevelt And The Progressive Party
In 1912, the Progressive Party formed to support Theodore Roosevelt in his attempt
to be elected for a third presidential term (O Toole par. 7, 11). The party was formed
after the Republican National Convention repudiated the nomination of Roosevelt
(Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt 251). Furthermore, this resulted in Roosevelt splitting
the Republican vote between him and William Howard Taftand gave Democrat
Woodrow Wilsonan advantage (Bardes, Shelley, and Schmidt). The Progressive
Party took a platform that was new and innovative for the time period in which it
began. To understand the the start of the Progressive Party one must acknowledge
its political platform, the outcome of the presidential election between Roosevelt,
Taft, and Wilson, and the outcome and end of the Progressive Party. After failing
to receive the nomination, those who supported Roosevelt had to develop another
strategy for his campaign. To run as a third party member, Roosevelt would
continue to require financial support. James Chance, professor of government and
public law at Bard College, claims that, Roosevelt was assured that he would have
the financial backing he would need . . . when his financial supporters, George
Perkins and millionaire publisher Frank Munsey, met with him . . . At that moment
the Progressive Party was born (120 121). Following this meeting, all that was left
before the Progressive Party would have a nominee was for Roosevelt to accept. He
responded saying, I shall accept
42. Thomas Paine And His Father
Philosopher Thomas Paine Thomas Paine was born in Norfolk, England on
January 29, 1737 to a middle income family. His father was a Quaker while his
mother was an Anglican, therefore, constant family arguments about religion
became part of Thomas life (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2). He did not
have much of formal education as he quit schooling at the age of thirteen years and
began working for his father. He was baptized in the Anglican Church that his
mother attended. His father had forbidden him from learning the Latin language
while he was in school though he wanted to learn it. His father specialized in craft
staymaking and this was the skill that Thomas learned while working for his father
(Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2). Thomas had tried running away from
home twice, failing in his first escape, but was successful in the second. He
escaped to London and then went to Margate where he continued to work as a
craft staymaker. He also preached in a church called Methodist persuasion. It was
during this time that he married Mary Lambert who died during childbirth
(Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy 2). Several incidents had a significant
impact on the life of Thomas such as working as an officer in an excise service,
teaching in a school in London, as well as being appointed a member of the
debating society at the Headstrong Club. Thomas later married Elizabeth Ollive in
the year 1771. Thomas died on 8th June 1809 in Greenwich Village in New York

43. Research Paper On Simone De Beauvoir
Man is defined as a human being and a woman as a female whenever she behaves
as a human being she is said to imitate the male. French writer Simone de Beauvoir
laid the foundation for the modern feminist movement. She was born in Paris,
France on January 9, 1908 and raised by a Catholic mother and father who was a
lawyer. During World War I, her family finances diminished and as a result, de
Beauvoir saw the expected and burdened chores given to her mother as the
homemaker and caregiver. This inspired de Beauvoir s future writings; she vowed to
never become this molded image of what a womanshould be. As a result, she
developed a love of teaching and pursued a career to break this mold. Simone
emphasized the mutual need for coexistence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Simone s beliefs and understanding of an undermined being were similar to that of
Frantz Fanon. Fanon wrote about and spoke for African Americans that he felt, were
forced into a position based on expectation and obligation. Fanon wrote, to speak is to
exist absolutely for the other in his article, Fanon shared his thoughts on how
language choice affected the being and attitude of others. In this case, Fanon was
speaking about the effect this language had on the morale of African Americans; he
stated that the language one chooses to communicate with requires that he/she
assume a culture, support the wright of civilization. Fanon described how in picking
sides or languages, many African Americans were forced to leave their identity
behind in order to support the whole, the masses. Children were taught to look down
upon their native peoples and adults were almost required to leave their

(thesis)The media is a culture force that can not be avoided and gives us
information on a vast variety of topics. It influences what we think, the way we act
and helps us choose our purchases. The media not only provides us with the
information, but it decides which information is important. What we see on
television and the internet or what we hear on the radio is all chosen by the media.
Media gives us the data that forms our opinions. It has taken away a lot of our
individual qualities and so that we are much like sheep trying to imitate the media
suggestions and losing our individuality and creativity. Advertising is a conspicuous

45. The Psychological Effects Of Smoking
One thing that smoking affects that a lot of people do not think about is how it
affects the people around the smoker, not only in a physical way but emotionally
also. According to a study, kids whose parents smoke are three times more likely to
smoke when they get older. If smokers have kids, smoking around them increases
their risk of having ear infections, asthma and other breathing problems that include
coughs, shortness of breath, and even bronchitis. It s not just children that are at risk
of lung and heart problems, it s every person around a smoker that are put at risk due
to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds
of them being toxic and 70 have shown to cause cancerin humans. Breathing in
secondhand smoke has been shown to have instant effects on the cardiovascular
system of nearby individuals, whether it s from a neighbor s burning cigaretteor from
a cigarette outside your window. Over time, it takes a toll on people s lungs and
has been found to increase the risk of having a stroke by 20 30% (Quitterscircle).
Smoking also has an impact on pets and animals. Exposure to secondhand smoke
for dogs increases the risk of them getting lung cancer and nasal cancer, especially
long nosed dogs like greyhounds. Cats that are exposed to secondhand smoke are
more than three times as likely to non Hodgkin s lymphoma. They may also suffer
from asthma or lung cancer. Secondhand smoke can also affect the eyesight of birds
and cause respiratory
46. Barnes Foundation Controversy
Alfred Barnes, who had a passion for collecting famous artworks for educating and
developing character within individuals, founded The Barnes Foundation in 1922.
He housed his collection in his estate, which was located in the suburbs of Merion,
Pennsylvania. Barnes believed that the everyday man should have the opportunity to
visit and appreciate honored artworks as well as to improve from the estate s
educational courses. Education is the priority; in fact, Barnes believed that the
foundation should not be considered an art museum. As stated by Barnes, the
purpose of the foundation was, to be maintained perpetually for education in the
appreciation of the fine arts and as an educational experiment. The controversy arises
decades after Barnes death. Barnes passed away in 1951 and contained in his will, he
specifically stated that in the Barnes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Glanton started to increase admission prices, added a gift shop, and took other
commercialized steps to create a more standard art museum. All of these measures
went against Alfred Barnes s original intent for the educational facility, where he
specifically stated the collection should not be used for commercial display. Glanton
argues that the purpose was to raise money for the renovation and care for the
building and collection. Add why his argument is discredited. Another ethical breach
Glanton spearheaded in, was the decision to move the entire Barnes collection to
downtown Philadelphia, rather than following Barnes s instruction to preserve the
artworks perpetually in his estate. Again, Glanton argues that the decision was to
create more revenue for the artworks themselves; however Alfred Barnes s legacy
was disrespected beyond belief as there were other ways to fund the collection while
still staying true to Barnes s endowment. It is clear that Glanton went against Barnes
s original
47. The Female Characters Of Ophelia And Gertrude Within
The Text
This analysis of Hamlet will focus on the female characters of Ophelia and Gertrude
within the text. Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius, she is a kind, sweet natured girl
of who Hamlet has fallen in love with. However, due to the control of both her father
and brother Laertes, has been convinced that she should spy on young Hamletas to
what his intentions are. Whereas, Gertrudeis a shadowy character with little
involvement in the text; it is seen as though she has to live through Claudius in
order to function in society. Throughout the text we can see that both Ophelia and
Gertrude are oppressed by the male figures around them such as Claudius, Hamlet,
Polonius and Laertes who are pivotal characters in the text. She also becomes more
mentally unstable as the play progresses. Psychologically , gender can also be a
difficult subject to analyse as nowadays your gender is not solely based on
whether you are male or female, the terms of gender and sex are used
interchangeably and according to western cultures they are not purely connected to
physical anatomy. However, focusing on the female figures of Ophelia and
Gertrude in relation to the line Frailty, thy name is woman initially suggests that any
one woman is the same as all women in society suggesting that they will always be
seen as the weaker gender. On the other hand, looking at the Wordsworth classic text
of Hamlet, Ophelia can be seen to be being controlled by both her father and brother
which could be the reason
48. The Suffering of China as a Result of Economic Growth
Essay
The Suffering of China as a Result of Economic Growth
China, as a crucial country in the world, is suffering from a variety of costs of
economic growth while the economic growth is incredibly fast in recent years. A
division between rich and poor, unemployment, and various external costs, unbalance
of payments, unstable exchange rate consumption of non renewable resources and
the risk of inflation and banking collapse have been the common social problems in
China.
There is a huge gap between the rich and poor people in China. The top 5 and 10%
of earners in China accounted for 19.8% and 31.9% of the country s revenue (by
Richard Spencer in The Daily Telegraph published in February 27th 2004). Some

For example, the number of the miners who suffer from black lung disease has been
increasing by 10,000 in recent years. Furthermore, the Chinese government has to
increase the expenditure of defense, as China has been regarded that it could become
an aggressive country in the future because of the fast economic growth.
The low exchange rate of currency can benefit Chinese exports; however the
negative effects still exist. The cost of imports both raw materials and component
parts for the production line is rising faster than its exports. (By Richard Spencer in
The Daily Telegraph published in Nov.2004). In addition, the payments are very
unbalanced, which could result in a shortage of goods for Chinese people in the
future. Excessively fast growth in bank lending could add to inflationary pressure,
(By the People s bank statement from daily telegraph Nov. 2004). This statement
shows that although a low lending ratio can stimulate the economy, an increase in the
money supply will lead to sustained inflation.
To produce more and more commodities, firms will utilise more and more capital
resources, however some of them are non renewable. There is an insatiable demand
for coal in China to feed the rapid economic growth in the country. (By Peter Goff in
the the Sunday telegraph published in Feb. 20th. 2005). Therefore, the shortage of
fossil fuels will cause a recession of economy of China in the long

Critically examine the geopolitics of humanitarian aid within the 21st century.
How have responses to famine changed over time and what are the key challenges to
famine prevention today?
Geopolitics have played a huge role in humanitarian aid in the current century.
Because humanitarian aid is largely sponsored by western countries it poses a huge
problem in the form of a parochial form of theorizing 1 that supports the interests of
the richest countries of the world. For the purpose of this essay I will begin by
examining the problems that have arisen in the most recent years of humanitarian aid
assistance. This arises from conditional aid, whereby donor countries or organizations
impose conditions in order for recipient countries to ... Show more content on

In cases such as Iraq and Afghanistan the United States military assumed a huge role
for the distribution of disaster and humanitarian assistance alongside their military
objectives. If foreign militaries are carrying out humanitarian aid alongside military
objectives, then there is no way that aid can be supplied to whoever is in need in
ways that are impartial, neutral and independent. This new system whereby foreign
militaries are responsible for supplying aid has created huge security problems for
not only the military, but for the people who are receiving aid. Opposing factions to
foreign military time and time again in Afghanistan and Iraq have targeted civilians
receiving aid to further their own agenda. 7
These are the problems that exist in the humanitarian aid industry today, but these
problems have developed over a course of many years and responses to famine and
humanitarian disasters have evolved over time. Thirty years ago disaster relief and
humanitarian aid were not considered to be of huge significance on a geopolitical
scale. During the 70 s and 80 s although humanitarian crisis existed, the geopolitics
was more focused on the cold war and respecting the sovereignty of nation states.
Although crisis in Africa, East Pakistan and Guatemala (to name a few) were made
