Unit Plan:
Genetics
MAIN OBJECTIVE:
• My students will be introduced to DNA structure, Mendelian
Genetics, heredity, genotypes, phenotypes, and will be analyzing
pedigrees, interpreting Punnett squares, diagnosing genetic
disorders, and extracting DNA by the end of the unit with 80%
accuracy.
Analyze Learners
ď‚— The learners are 10th grade students in a Biology
course at a fairly rural high school. Two-thirds of the
class are girls. A few of the students have mild
attention-deficit disorders.
Day-by-Day
Day 1: Introduction to DNA, Chromosomes, and Genes
Day 2: Mendelian Genetics and Punnett Squares
Day 3: Genotypes and Phenotypes
Day 4: Pedigree Analyses and Genetic Disorders
Day 5: DNA extraction and DNA ploidy
Use of Technology
 Khan Academy videos will provide a “flipped
classroom” concept
ď‚— Virtual Labs will offer Punnett Square and Pedigree
experiences
ď‚— The smart board will allow me to show DNA images
and videos
ď‚— Internet access will allow students to research
genetic disorders on their own
