Global data center investment is expected to grow to $283 billion by 2020, though the growth rate will decline steadily due to factors like virtualization and outsourced services. Currently most investment is in new builds, but consolidation and outsourcing are growing faster options. The number of global data centers has tripled in the last seven years to around 200,000 currently. Data center growth is shifting from in-house facilities to cloud and outsourced options as their confidence increases. This will help slow the growth of occupied data center space and power consumption while the data center industry continues its critical role anchoring businesses.
