I have included here the current job description for the President’s position, for those that may not be familiar with it, or may need a quick refresher.
As I was preparing this presentation, I was reading through the bullet points and the word LEAD or LEADER jumped out at me as a key component of this position. Seeing this repeated so often got me to thinking about how I could meet this specific criteria. To do that, I had to contemplate and determine what my definition of leadership is.
In researching the term leadership, I came across a definition that rang true to me, with one slight modification. The SAF Centre for Leadership Development defines leadership as a process of influencing people to accomplish the mission, inspiring their commitment and improving the organization. I have modified this to read “Leadership is a process of empowering people to accomplish the mission, inspiring their commitment and improving the organization”. To me, it is much more important to empower people rather than to influence them; as I believe it leads to a higher level of productivity and commitment.
The more I thought about this definition, the more the pieces just seemed to fall into place as to what my goal as President for IAIDQ would be.
My goal as President will be to provide the leadership necessary to ensure that IAIDQ has the organizational foundation to support ongoing activity and growth in the next 10 years.
Yes, it is a single goal, but encompasses a great deal, as there are many things that we have all discussed as ways to grow and change the organization. I don’t believe that it is up to me, as a single person, to drive the direction for the organization single handedly. Rather, it needs to be a collaborative effort where a functional group reaches consensus on the appropriate direction. As the picture in this slide notes, it will be my responsibility to provide the leadership that will motivate the team towards success.
How will I provide the leadership? By engaging in the activities identified in the slide. Note that these are just some of the key activities; there will likely be many more that I take an active role in completing. I will follow IAIDQ’s core values in engaging in these activities.
The slide says it all.
Why am I volunteering for this position? Put plain and simply, I believe in the organization and it’s mission. I believe that IAIDQ can and will be the “go-to” organization for information and data quality. I believe that this organization has a future, and I want to be part of that future, in whatever role I can best be of service. In this instance, I believe that the best way I can serve IAIDQ is to utilize my leadership skills to facilitate the ongoing activities of the organization.
Once again, thank you for your consideration of my proposal and candidacy for the position of President.
