COURSE CODE: 6505
UNIT NO. 4 - Curriculum in Islamic System
Dr. Daniyal Mushtaq
Concept of Curriculum
The basis of curriculum in Islamic system of
education;
Philosophical
Psychological
Sociological
Economical
Curriculum Integration
Selection and organization of the content
Model of curriculum for secondary classes in
Islamic system
Outline of the Content
Originated from Latin language giving
meaning a “race course”. In education it
signifies “course of study”.
Curriculum is defined as all the learning
activities planned and guided by the school
personnel inside or outside of the school
In Islamic system of education, curriculum is
all the formal or informal ways, means and
activities of educative process which are
designed to achieve aims and objectives of
education
Concept of Curriculum
•Philosophical Base of Curriculum
Religious beliefs provide base for curriculum in
Islamic system of education. Religious beliefs,
observance, customs, traditions and laws govern the
conduct among individuals and groups
Curriculum is designed to create favorable climate to
prepare future generations to learn beliefs, accept
them, define them and become zealous for them and
for the worship of God
The laws which govern individual or group behavior
are based on laws revealed by God or based on social
traditions and general rules.
Basis of Curriculum
•Psychological Base of Curriculum
Psychological needs are kept in mind while developing
curriculum in Islam
Curriculum is developed according to the mental and
chronological ages
A child cannot be forced to pray, fast or take part in
Jihad
Curriculum in Islam is based on TWO pillars
The Quran and prophet’s traditions
Islamic Jurisprudence and religion together with
Arabic language that helps to understand them
Basis of Curriculum
• Sociological Base of Curriculum
Transfer of cultural heritage to succeeding generations
Curriculum is based on politics, geography, theology
and Islamic concepts of society like brotherhood
Islamic social knowledge represents a shared sets of
meanings used by Islamic society which are solutions
to many recurring problems in a particular
environment
Social base of curriculum creates an integrated
personality and prepare individuals for every aspects
of life
Basis of Curriculum
•Economical Base of Curriculum Education
and economic development go side by side Islam
gives guarantee to every Muslim of living Strong
economical systems have been given by Islam such
as justice in barter system, Zakat and Usher to
support overall community
Through curriculum such members of society are
produced who come forward to take part in supporting
other needy human being economically in the days of
emergencies and such other circumstances
Basis of Curriculum
Quran:The Core Curriculum In
ISLAM
“Or read in the name of Lord and cherisher,
who created man, out of a clot of con gealed
blood, or read and the Lord is most Bountiful
he who taught the use of pen taught man that
which he knew not
(Surah Alaq)”
Quran: The Core Curriculum In
ISLAM
The Quran is the first subject of children in
Muslim societies
The Holy Quran is the prime source of
comprehensive subject matter for
teaching/learning, solutions to problems,
guidance on matters daily life.
What is the Curriculum integration
 The attempt to overcome or reduce the barriers between
school subjects and to arran.ge studies in a way that take
into consideration common elements across different
bodies of knowledge is usually known as curriculum
integration.
 It is horizontal relationship of various areas of
curriculum to each other.
Characteristics of
integration
1. Common learning
2. Co-operative planning of activities
3. Provision of special needs
4. Skill taught when needed
5. The core of curriculum prescribed for
the early Muslims was the Quran.
Ways of integration
• Pring 1975 has suggested four ways in
which integration can be made, these
are:
1. Integration is greater theoretical unity
2. Integration in shared methods or
procedures.
3. Integration in the focus upon
practical questions and problem.
4. Integration round broad theme, ideas
or topics.
Integration of Religious Education
• The religious elements in the school
curriculum and how does it affect the
school as a whole. Almost it certainly
presupposes a willingness on the part of the
religious educators to concentrate upon the
factual contents of their subjects.
• Man’s religious activity will be traced in
time and in space, the comparative social
and developmental aspects being stressed.
Curriculum integration in Pakistan
In Pakistan there is always complaint of heavy
school bag load.
Children have to carry five or six text books along
with exercise books are extra burden.
The school bag may weight about 1.5 kilogram in
class 1 and up to 5 kilogram in class V.
In order to reduce burden, repetition of content in
different subjects should be avoided
Islamiat, social studies, history and geography can
be integrated
Content selection
Content consists of the facts, concepts and generalizations
or the knowledge related to particular subjects or theme.
Content is important as it helps to bring about learning or
achieve intended learning outcomes
Content selection in Islamic system;
 Validity and significance of content as disciplined
knowledge
 Balance between content for survey and content for
study in depth
 Appropriateness of the content to needs and
interest
 Long lasting quality of the elements of content is
emphasized
 Learnability of the content
Criteria of content selection
The following criteria should be followed
while selecting curriculum content;
 Significance
 Utilitarian
 Interest
 Learnability
 Flexibility
Model of curriculum for secondary
classes in Islamic system
Model curriculum-I
Islam as a way of life – conceptual analysis
Social and moral foundations of Islam
Islam as a bulwark against modern atheistic
concepts
Model curriculum-II
