Cultural industry
Adorno and Horkheimer
 Adorno and Horkheimer adopted the term Culture
Industry. They adopted this to argue that the way
cultural items were produced.
 They argued that the culture industry exhibited
products like a assembly line.
 An example of this would be X Factor they use the
assembly line.
Assembly line
 Assembly line is like any manufacture company where
hey pick and chose what they want their product to be
like.
 The X factor uses the assembly line. This is when an
artist goes though the audition stage and through out the
X factor is getting shaped and once they get a record deal
they are then shaped by the record label.
 The metaphor of the assembly line was used to stress the
repetitive and routine character of cultural production.
 No one can be unique in the assembly line because they
are all assembled the same way.
Pseudo individuality
 Pseudo mean False so pseudo individuality means
false individuality.
 Adorno and Horkheimer evoked the image of the
Lock and Key. This is where it is mass produced but
doesn’t have any unique features they are all mainly
the same or have a slight difference.
Capitalism
 Capitalism means making money.
 A capitalism corporation seems to enjoy an
omnipotent form of domination where the artist and
consumers aren't separate and are connected to the
system of production, the assembly line.
Standardization
 Standardization mean that everything is becoming
the same there is no new or old.
 Adorno and Horkheimer argued that all products
produced by the culture industry have
standardization features for example songs where
based on a repetitive sequence or frequently
requiring refrains.
