2. Cultural Diversity
• Cultural Diversity represents the existence of a variety of
cultural groups within a society. It’s about understanding
the mindset of a patient within a larger context of culture,
gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and
socioeconomic realities. Health disparities can affect the
population differently. Attitudes toward health care and
treatment can vary among different populations. As a
result, medical professionals need to provide customized
care that acknowledges and recognizes these differences.

Xenophobia?
• It is a fear of strangers. Xenophobia is a broad term that may be applied to
any fear of someone who is different from us.
• Feeling uncomfortable around people who fall into a different "group"
• Refusing to care for people solely due to their skin color, mode of dress, or
other external factors.
• At Sandhills Endoscopy Center Xenophobia is not tolerated. Nor is it a
behavior that supports our mission.

effective healthcare for many reasons. Some
common barriers include:
• Language
• Communication Styles
• Cultural Traditions
• Health Literacy
• Cultural Assumptions

Culturally Sensitive?
• A few steps you can take to ensure
the best possible care no matter
what your patient's background is:

9. 1. Don’t Make Assumptions: Ask you patient
their cultural practices. Find out what a patient
knows about their health problem and treatment
options in the past.
2. Practice Active Listening: The best way to make a
patient feel comfortable, and to provide high quality
care is to thoroughly understand the needs of
the patient.
3. Overcome Language Barriers: Cross-cultural
communication requires patience. It
is important to speak slowly, avoid medical jargon, and
frequently check for understanding. If the patient does
not understand, seek help from an interpreter.
4. Educate About Medical Practices: Explain
medications, treatment plans, and procedures
to be performed. This it is the best way to keep a patient
calm and informed.

10. 5. Build Trust And Rapport: To build trust, it helps to slow down
and speak clearly. Practice Reflective listening, express
empathy, and always project calmness no matter the situation.
6. Learn About Your Patient's Culture: Cultural sensitivity begins
with observation and awareness. Knowledge of others
traditions, communication styles, and cultural assumptions will
help provide a better healthcare experience.
7. Be Accepting of Everyone: Part of our mission is to care for
everyone no matter their socioeconomic status or knowledge
base.
