Self Awareness
Thompson (1996) defines it as; "Knowledge of
your own feelings, attitudes and values and
learning about the effect you have on others."
Why is this relevant to social work practice?

others.

7. DIVISION OR SCHOOL
Values and their impact
So in preparing yourself for placement you will
need to be considering these qualities and how
they may impact on you.
It is not about changing these qualities in you but
identifying their impact and responding to them
8. DIVISION OR SCHOOL
Self awareness is important because
We can adjust our behaviour so that we can deal
with others positively.
We can improve our self control by understanding
our weaknesses and what upsets us.
It assists us to be more resilient as workers and to
be able to do the work for longer
We can avoid projecting our values onto others
9. DIVISION OR SCHOOL
Ways you can increase self awareness
• Through feedback from others
• Formal tests such as Myers Briggs etc
• Trying new experiences
• By telling your life story
• Daily writing
• Considering the roles you play
10. DIVISION OR SCHOOL
