“For DLF, Corporate Social Responsibility is not just an addon; rather our business and
social commitment are mutually reinforcing and neither will be sustainable without the other. We
have a continuing social responsibility towards the people of the area in which we operate more
towards the less fortune. It has been our constant endeavour to create sustainable economies and
transform stagnant lives into active partnership through synergized proactive handholding in areas
of infrastructure, education, training, health and environment. We have made a public commitment
to carry on these trusted relationships.”
Chairman, DLF Limited,
Mr. K. P. Singh
First CSR Interventions
DLF's first social responsibility interventions date back to the time that DLF was setting up the DLF
township in Gurgaon. Instead of ignoring the undesired information, DLF considered the local
problems, and decided to undertake internal development work in the villages of Nathupur,
Chakarpur and Wazirabad by contributing through construction of internal village roads, additional
rooms in the schools and internal village electrification.
1
Swapana Sarthak Informal School
DLF initiated its first education initiative by setting up the Swapana Sarthak informal school
for children of the construction workers. In this school, children who are ill equipped to join regular
school or those who cannot afford to do so are admitted and trained volunteers conducts classes for
them. All children enrolled are provided with free uniforms, mid day meals and learning material.
Starting from merely 10 students, the school today has on roll 220 students. The trained voluntees
took the students out of home and taught them gradually the sense of personal hygiene and
cleanliness.
DLF FOUNDATION

DLF Foundation was established in 2008 by DLF Limited, to provide structure and focus to
the ongoing social responsibility initiatives of the company. It is registered under the laws of India
as a charitable organization. This foundation has been formed with a mission of empowering
communities and creating opportunities for the underprivileged in areas of Education, Training and
Health. To ensure sustainable and inclusive growth, which is both environment friendly and socially
uplifting, a number of rural Education, Training, Health and Environment initiatives have been
taken by the foundation since its incorporation and it looks forward to creating new innovative
processes in areas of Rural Education, Health and Labor care. This organization operates under
theleadership of Mr. K.P. Singh, the Chairman of the DLF Group. They do,

Skill Development Programme
Getting employment is a matter of survival for many people. So, they have established
Employability Linked Vocational Training Centers under the banner of DLF LIFE (Learning
Initiative for Employment) for training one million youths in next 10 years about the skills need for
employment and they provide employment for those people. The programme has been carried out in
the states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,
Gujarat and Delhi. A large number of youth have been provided employment across the 19 centers
established till date.
Talent Nurturing Programme

DLF initiated a flagship programme „DLF Inspire‟ to provide greater access to quality
education for underprivileged students. Talent identification and nurturing is the core of this
programme. The scholarship covers school scholarship (Class I to XII), undergraduate Scholarship
(Engineering, IT, MBBS, Fine Arts and Sports) and Post graduate Scholarship (MBA/Equivalent).
A sum of 25,000rs has been allocated for every student in this school scholarship for their
educational expenses. For the merit students of the underprivileged category , ‟DLF Ragavendra
Scholarship‟ is given where 40,000Rupees a year will be provided for each year till they complete
their four year degree course.DLF have partnered with few management institutions where
scholarships have been allotted for post graduate students who wish to pursue a two-year full time
MBA or an equivalent degree in India. An amount of Rupees 50,000 per annum would be paid for
the scholars towards their educational expenses.
Village Cluster Development
Dividing the rural villages into clusters and working on the development of those clusters in
six departments- social, economic, environment, health, education and skill development. This
programme establishted one Primary Health Centre in every cluster. The first Primary Health
Centre was set up at Village Shikohpur in August 2007 in association with an NGO Deepalaya.
Periodic Inoculation, fumigation and Eye Camps are done. Multi Specialty Health Camp is done

once in a year.Scholarship programme integrated with existing Rural Learning Excellence Centers
in Government Primary Schools.Rural Mobile Library focused on inculcating reading habits
amongst children has been integrated to cover Adult Literacy Programme in villages.
Community Development
Employability-linked Skill Development Programme, the DLF Raghvendra Scholarship
Programme for the underprivileged and the Gurgaon Renewal Mission were introduced by the DLF
Foundation addresses the gaps in the field of Education, Healthcare environment and labour
welfare. Under their educational programmes, DLF Foundation has established 30 rural schools in
Haryana, UP and Punjab in partnership with Bharti Foundation.
DLF Learning Excellence Centres
Taking the education initiative ahead, DLF partnered with Pratham in May 2007 and set up
DLF Learning Excellence Centres in 25 villages by involving the government schools, community
teachers and introducing innovative teaching learning material. The main hurdles faced during the
project were lack of adequate means of public transport and resistance from the local community to
involve the women. However, these were overcome through a sustained education and awareness
campaign conducted across the entire village community and by taking the village Panchayats into
confidence. This is an ongoing project likely to benefit 1100 students over a period of one year.
Development of Arya Samaj Mandir
DLF Commercial Developers Ltd. has contributed Rs.20 lacs towards the development of Arya
Samaj Mandir in DLF City, Phase-II. This will not only help in over all development of the Mandir
primises but also help the community at large where devotees can come and seek spiritual
satisfaction.
DLF Labour Hutment
DLF felt that even though there had been tremendous improvement in construction
technology and quality it was distressing to note that the people who actually make all the buildings
were neglected lot and often required to do so in inhuman conditions. The sight of construction
workers and their children living in jhuggies(A slum area in Delhi) without even the basic facilities
at most of the construction sites. DLF wanted to improve the living conditions of their construction
workers by providing them all the basic necessities at the site itself by efficient and effective space

management and started providing it on site when it tied up with Laing O Rourke company for
construction projects.
They decided that before commencement of the construction a suitable location should be
identified on site for construction of hutments for the workers for the entire duration of the project.
Instead of constructing temporary accommodation DLF sanctioned hefty budgets to build a mix of
cemented hutments and dormitories for the workers. The entire labour hutment area was paved to
ensure easy access even during the monsoons. The work of sanitation and housekeeping was
outsourced to a third party namely M/s Lion Services. All the residential accommodation at the
DLF labour hutment site is provided with electricity, water, fans, beds and separate areas have been
provided for toilets and washing.
In order to take care of the children of the workers mobile crèches have been made
available on site through a strategic tie up with an NGO named Mobile Creches. A canteen manned
by a third party has also been made available on site to ensure hygienic and good quality food on
site. Medical help is available on site along with a 24-hour ambulance to take care of emergencies.
In order to improve the skills of the workers as well as train potential workers on site a non-profit
residential "Apprentice Training Centre" for imparting skills in carpentry and masonry was started.
Helping the Rural craftsmen
As a infrastructure creator, DLF provided a place for NGOs and various Social Foundations
to display their wares. This brought those organizations closer to the urban consumers and increased
their income. As part of this initiative in the retail malls set up in Gurgaon,it awarded free space to
NGO's like Khushboo Welfare Society, India Vision Foundation and the Rashtriya Blind School
and others to enable them to exhibit their products for awareness and to create awareness for the
cause they espouse.
Environment Programs
DLF incorporates green initiatives in all its construction activities. They are,


Recycling of waste water.



Rainwater harvesting.



Use of high performance reflective glass in buildings.



Pollution control measures during construction activity at project sites.



Use of green materials like fly ash in construction.

A total of 47 awards have been received by DLFunder various categories.DLF‟s 150 MW
windpower plant at Gujarat is a clean power plant as there is no carbon emission from that power
generation. It has installed a gas-based power generation system at the Infinity Tower,
Gurgaon. They use the waste heat for air-conditioning and this saves about 25 per cent of
power.DLF conducts plantation drive in many villages by involving the Government school
children and the local Panchayats with support from the Forest Department.DLF is in the process of
switching its street lighting system to 36 watts CFL with electronic choke thereby saving 15-20
watts per street light.
Employees volunteering programme
Blood Donation camps are also being organised for blood donation by the employees in
association with Lions Blood Bank. Donation programmes are done where the employees
contribute and donate old clothes and other household articles for the construction workers and their
families employed at DLF construction sites.
My Inference
DLF besides focusing on its business development, also focuses on the society and its better
improvement which is a sign of responsible lead in the society. The company‟s concern on the
people is respectable.Few lines under the CSR tab of the company‟s website says,
“We dream, We dare
We grow, We share
We build,We care”
The second line implies, as the company grows, it shares some amount of its profit for the
development of the society around and keep doing it through its DLF FOUNDATION. Building of
the business is not their only moto but caring for their employees, society and their welfare are also
in lane. Government‟s rule on the companies to spend 2% of their profit on CSR activities is really
appreciable.

Under their educational programmes, DLF Foundation has established 30 rural schools in Haryana, UP and Punjab in partnership with Bharti Foundation. DLF Learning Excellence Centres Taking the education initiative ahead, DLF partnered with Pratham in May 2007 and set up DLF Learning Excellence Centres in 25 villages by involving the government schools, community teachers and introducing innovative teaching learning material. The main hurdles faced during the project were lack of adequate means of public transport and resistance from the local community to involve the women. However, these were overcome through a sustained education and awareness campaign conducted across the entire village community and by taking the village Panchayats into confidence. This is an ongoing project likely to benefit 1100 students over a period of one year. Development of Arya Samaj Mandir DLF Commercial Developers Ltd. has contributed Rs.20 lacs towards the development of Arya Samaj Mandir in DLF City, Phase-II. This will not only help in over all development of the Mandir primises but also help the community at large where devotees can come and seek spiritual satisfaction. DLF Labour Hutment DLF felt that even though there had been tremendous improvement in construction technology and quality it was distressing to note that the people who actually make all the buildings were neglected lot and often required to do so in inhuman conditions. The sight of construction workers and their children living in jhuggies(A slum area in Delhi) without even the basic facilities at most of the construction sites. DLF wanted to improve the living conditions of their construction workers by providing them all the basic necessities at the site itself by efficient and effective space 4

They decided that before commencement of the construction a suitable location should be identified on site for construction of hutments for the workers for the entire duration of the project. Instead of constructing temporary accommodation DLF sanctioned hefty budgets to build a mix of cemented hutments and dormitories for the workers. The entire labour hutment area was paved to ensure easy access even during the monsoons. The work of sanitation and housekeeping was outsourced to a third party namely M/s Lion Services. All the residential accommodation at the DLF labour hutment site is provided with electricity, water, fans, beds and separate areas have been provided for toilets and washing. In order to take care of the children of the workers mobile crèches have been made available on site through a strategic tie up with an NGO named Mobile Creches. A canteen manned by a third party has also been made available on site to ensure hygienic and good quality food on site. Medical help is available on site along with a 24-hour ambulance to take care of emergencies. In order to improve the skills of the workers as well as train potential workers on site a non-profit residential "Apprentice Training Centre" for imparting skills in carpentry and masonry was started. Helping the Rural craftsmen As a infrastructure creator, DLF provided a place for NGOs and various Social Foundations to display their wares. This brought those organizations closer to the urban consumers and increased their income. As part of this initiative in the retail malls set up in Gurgaon,it awarded free space to NGO's like Khushboo Welfare Society, India Vision Foundation and the Rashtriya Blind School and others to enable them to exhibit their products for awareness and to create awareness for the cause they espouse. Environment Programs DLF incorporates green initiatives in all its construction activities. They are,  Recycling of waste water.  Rainwater harvesting.  Use of high performance reflective glass in buildings.  Pollution control measures during construction activity at project sites.  Use of green materials like fly ash in construction. 5

It has installed a gas-based power generation system at the Infinity Tower, Gurgaon. They use the waste heat for air-conditioning and this saves about 25 per cent of power.DLF conducts plantation drive in many villages by involving the Government school children and the local Panchayats with support from the Forest Department.DLF is in the process of switching its street lighting system to 36 watts CFL with electronic choke thereby saving 15-20 watts per street light. Employees volunteering programme Blood Donation camps are also being organised for blood donation by the employees in association with Lions Blood Bank. Donation programmes are done where the employees contribute and donate old clothes and other household articles for the construction workers and their families employed at DLF construction sites. My Inference DLF besides focusing on its business development, also focuses on the society and its better improvement which is a sign of responsible lead in the society. The company‟s concern on the people is respectable.Few lines under the CSR tab of the company‟s website says, “We dream, We dare We grow, We share We build,We care” The second line implies, as the company grows, it shares some amount of its profit for the development of the society around and keep doing it through its DLF FOUNDATION. Building of the business is not their only moto but caring for their employees, society and their welfare are also in lane. Government‟s rule on the companies to spend 2% of their profit on CSR activities is really appreciable. 6
