Slumdog Millionaire Ambition
Ambition is an eager, and sometimes insatiable desire to fulfill something in one s life; it is when they
seek something that is beyond them or their circumstance. In fact, ambition allows an individual to
look for significance in a life that is otherwise devoid of meaning. Moreover, it is a prevalent force
that harbours their accomplishments and considerably influences the outcomes in their lives. Jamal
Malik, the hero of the film, Slumdog Millionaire, effectively portrays this idea as he attempts to
surpass the afflictions of his youth by pursuing a meaningful life with his one true love. Through this
character, the director, Danny Boyle illustrates how an individual s ambition may instil in them the
power to overcome even the greatest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, he lives in a society where the predominant caste system inherently assigns each individual
with a predetermined role. Thus, children like Jamal, Salim, and their companion, Latika, become both
socially and spatially excluded by society. In fact, they are denied the same opportunities as regular
children and their freedoms are regulated by the absent, yet restrictive influence of the social system.
It is absent because these kids lack the basic necessities to aid them in their survival; they are on their
own, with no one to look out for them except for themselves. On the other hand, the same system
limits these kids by denying them access to resources that would help improve their situation (i.e.
education, healthcare, etc.). Through the fates of such characters, the viewer is given glimpses into the
relatively unexplored, misunderstood and complex world of street children, as their live their lives
outside the conventional view of childhood. More often than not, those who are born into such
impoverished conditions, remain in the same state, up until their death. Jamal, for instance, becomes a
chai wallah...[who serves] tea [to] people. His mobility is restricted, and his opportunities are limited
due to his lack of education and reduced social status. It also is implied that this is the fate that society
has set out for

Poverty Is A Global Concern And Its Eradication
Poverty is a global concern and its eradication is becoming surmountable. This is primarily due to the
challenges posed by international and national causes respectively. Besides, the complexity of the
phenomenon has not lend itself to be easily eradicated. Little wonder the world continues to struggle
to eradicate poverty. Africa is one of the poorest countries on the universe and research and data show
that Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in Sub Sahara (UNDP, 2015). Sierra Leone s poverty
has been a growing concern in spite of its numerous natural resources and international financial and
economic interventions. It is therefore worth investigating the trends of the country s poverty and how
it has impacted its people in the country.
Therefore, task of this paper is to examine the trend in which poverty in Sierra Leone is either
changing or stagnating and the disadvantages associated with poverty among children. Consideration
will also be given to policy in relation to the findings.
The first part of the essay will give a summary of the historical background of the country. This
chapter will throw light into the socio political and economic foundations of Sierra Leone.
Chapter two of the essay will concentrate on the definition of poverty as perceived by different
authors. These definitions throw light into the different perspectives of poverty and discuss various
measurements in assessing poverty especially in developing countries.

Prevention Of Lyme Disease Vaccine
Prevention
Lyme disease has existed on the planet for thousands of years. The best way to prevent Lyme disease
is by covering up, use insect repellents, clear yard of brush and leaves, check yourself and children for
ticks, don t assume you re immune; you can get Lyme disease more than once, and remove ticks with
tweezers as soon as possible. [1] According to the CDC the Lyme disease vaccine s production was
discontinued by it s manufacturer in 2002. The manufacturer cited an insufficient consumer demand.
[2]
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
One way to prevent infection is to know where to expect ticks. The ticks that cause Lyme disease live
in moist environments near wooded and grassy areas. To avoid ticks, when hiking or outdoors walk in

In general, adult ticks are approximately the size of a sesame seed and nymphal ticks are
approximately the size of a poppy seed.
One method of Secondary prevention is to perform daily tick checks especially after being outdoors,
even in your own yard. Search your entire body for ticks when you return from an area that may have
ticks. Use a hand held or full length mirror to view all parts of your body and remove any tick you
find. Take special care to check these parts of your body and your child s body for ticks: under the
arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, back of the knees, in and around all head and
body hair, between the legs, around the waist. It is also important to check clothes and pets carefully
and remove any ticks that are found. Place clothes into a dryer on high heat to kill ticks. [5]
It is important to remove any attached ticks quickly and correctly with fine tipped tweezers as soon as
you notice it. The CDC reports that if a tick has been attached to your skin for less than 24 hours, your
chances of contacting Lyme disease are extremely small; however ticks carry other diseases which
may be transmitted more quickly. [6]
After a bite over the next couple of weeks, you should watch for signs or symptoms of Lyme disease
such as rash or fever. See a healthcare provider if you have signs or symptoms as soon as possible.
Many times people do not know they have been bit. It is important to always be alert for fever or rash.

Study Group Conformity
Conformity is the way that most people do in accordance to their behavior in their society
(Conformity 1). Group Conformity is the way that human beings are affected by the behavior of others
around them. The first experiment that studied group conformity was performed by Jenness in 1932
(Conformity 4). Following this experiment many more were performed such as The Stanford County
Prison Experiment, Solomon Asch Experiment, Candid Camera Elevator Experiment, The Milgram
Experiment, and the Bystander effect (Reyes). Just like there are many different types of experiments,
there are also many different types of conformity compliance, internalisation, identification and
ingratiational (Conformity). This paper will go over some of the many experiments ... Show more

This experiment was first designed to investigate how people would conform to the roles of guard and
prisoner in a role playing exercise that simulated prison life (Mcleod 1). Zimbardo was interested in
learning about whether the brutality in the prisons was because of the behavior of the guards towards
the prisoners or if it was because of the prison environment. He beginned his experiment by placing an
ad in the newspaper calling out for males that were willing to be part of the experiment, 70 individuals
answered the ad. Every individual had to go through a background check to check for mental issues or
past drug or alcohol use. In the end only 24 students were chosen (McLeod). The prisoners were
treated just like they would be treated at a your average prison. Half of the 24 students that were
selected were prisoners and the other half were the guards. The guards had no specific direction as to
how to treat the prisoners, Guards were instructed to do whatever they thought was necessary to
maintain law and order in the prison and to command the respect of the prisoners. No physical
violence was permitted Mcleod 11). As the days went on the prison began to seem and become more
like a real life one was. The guards began to become more aggressive in order to maintain control over
the inmates. Some of the prisoners began to show early signs of depression by the third day. Although
the experiment was supposed to go on for a longer period of time, it had to be cancelled on the sixth
day. This concluded that People will readily conform to the social roles they are expected to play,
especially if the roles are as strongly stereotyped as those of the prison guards (Mcleod

Portrayal Of Women In The Media
Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Eartha Kitt are famously known for their hourglass figures. Years
ago, women were celebrated for their natural curvy figures. Today, if you turn on the television or
open a magazine, one comes face to face with unrealistically thin models. This epidemic has increased
the number of women who are dissatisfied with their bodies. This paper will assess several articles,
literature reviews, and papers that relate to the media s portrayal of the ideal women s body being
extremely thin. Each source elaborates on the dissatisfaction women have with their bodies as a result
of the content released in the media. Irving (2008) defines media as a Tool used to transmit ideas,
images, messages, or information to the public. The media strategically targets adolescent females.
This is specifically ages 13 18 (Steinberg Morris, 2001). During these precious years of life,
adolescents go through periods of struggle with identity. The most prominent struggle is understanding
their role in society, and conforming to social norms. Media today offers a distorted vision of the
world, and therefore makes it difficult for adolescents to decipher what is actually realistic (Van
Vonderen Kinnally, 2012). Present day, the media has easily become the most influential factor of our
culture. For instance, when a news story, product, or service needs to be publicized where do
individuals turn? Social media, television, and magazines have become the

The Topic Of Controlling Women’S Reproductive Systems Has
The topic of controlling women s reproductive systems has been an issue for many years. About a
century ago, birth control in any form was illegal. As women s rights came to the forefront of
American politics, women fought for the right to vote and gained the ability to use contraception and
eventually get abortions. In 1921, The American Birth Control League formed ; this later became
Planned Parenthood, and gained thirty thousand members in its first three years. This organization
founded the first birth control clinic. In 1938, the US Circuit of Appeals decided a case that permitted
physicians to give information about contraception to their patients. By the 1940s, there were three
hundred new birth control clinics and 80% of American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
States could only enact abortion laws protecting the life of the fetus only in the third trimester, but
exceptions must be made to protect the life of the mother. Linda Coffee and Sarah Weddington fought
the case on behalf of Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe) under the claim that the Texas law banning
abortions violated Roe s constitutional rights to privacy (McBride, Roe v. Wade). The Supreme Court
decided in Roe s favor in a 7 2 decision (Oyez, Roe v. Wade). The decision deemed marriage,
contraception, and child rearing as part of a Constitution guaranteed zone of privacy from the 1st, 4th,
9th, and 14th amendments. This decision also deemed a woman s right to terminate her pregnancy as
part of this zone of privacy. The opposition gave three justifications for banning abortions. The first
was a Victorian like social concern to discourage illicit sexual conduct, the second to protect the life of
the mother, and the third to protect prenatal life. The court rejected the first two reasons, and ruled that
fetuses do not fit the definition of a person (McBride) The court also ruled that if a fetus is viable, then
states may disallow abortions as long as the life of the mother is not at stake, and states may restrict
abortions during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Forty six states were affected by this decision.
In 1992, the United States Supreme Court ruled on the Casey v. Planned Parenthood case. While this
case affirmed Roe. v Wade, it

The Invisible Mother And Lennie Analysis
The Invisible Mother and Lennie
When a person thinks of a true motherly bond they most likely think of warmth, happiness, someone
safe, and reliable. In of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie has to live a life without his mother
and because of that it affects the rest of his life . Not having access to the sacred feeling of a mother s
love can alter anyone s life. That is why Lennie realizes he needs something to fill that hole in his
heart with something that at least resembles a mother s love. If that bond is taken away then a person
is left bare to the elements of the cold harsh world. There is something about soft creatures that gives
Lennie a sense of serenity and inner peace. The inner peace he gets is the reason why Lennie from Of
Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, loves mice, puppies, rabbits, and anything soft because it
represents a true motherly love he never had. Mice in the novel has a deeper symbolic meaning than
just it being a petite pet. What Lennie loves about mice is their reliability and stability. These soft
natured mice are so easy to find for Lennie. Mice also have a motherly quality that Lennie never had.
A true mother is known for always being there no matter what. In the beginning of the book Lennie
and George are walking towards their new job, Lennie is holding a mouse but George catches him,
George says You gonna give me that mouse or do i have to sock you? ... Lennie reluctantly reached in
his pocket. I don t know why I can t keep it. It ain t nobody s mouse. I didn t steal it. I found it lyin
right beside the road (9). As long as Lennie is looking for mice then the mice are alway there for
Lennie. The only thing stopping him most of the time is George. That is why Lennie needs to sneak
around to get what he loves. Even though he loves the mice he is a danger to them. In a way when
Lennie is with the mice he feels like he has mother again but when a mouse bites him he goes back to
reality and kills it. When he kills the mice he feels remorse and then makes the desperate search to
find something to replace it. It s important because Lennie never had an accepting person s shoulder to
cry on. Even though Lennie has a mental handicap the need for reliability is evident.

Frederic Remington Research Paper
Frederic Remington s Bronco Buster
The art world has many major contributions. Frederic Remington s contribution was just as major as
any other popular artist. His many travels influenced all of his art, which mostly consisted of Native
American s and horses. When most people hear the name Remington, they think about the Remington
Rifle Company but Frederic Remington was an artist involved in the Impressionist movement with his
most famous sculpture Bronco Buster.
Frederic Remington was born in Canton, New York on October 4, 1861. His parents came from two
very different backgrounds. On the paternal side his family was hard working. Owning shops and
hardware stores when they arrived in the early 18th century from Alsace Lorraine. His father ... Show

His drawings of 1800 s military officers and of the Wild West are widely popular in today s culture.
He was a big contributor to the impressionist art movement. His watercolor paintings were absolutely
marvelous. Impressionism is a style of art in which artist s capture ideas in there head with just a
glimpse. They paint with lots of color and are very bright and vibrant. A majority of these type of
paintings are done outdoors. Remington was truly a genius when it came to his art styles. Not only did
he use impressionism but he also used tonalism. Tonalism is a style of art when artists would paint
landscape forms with very Earth toned colors. They were typically made with dark natural hues such
as blue, gray, or brown. Before Frederic s death in 1909 he started working with bronze and started his
sculpting phase of his career. The very first sculpture he made was the famed Bronco Buster. The
original Bronco Buster was created in 1895. This sculpture was just barely three feet tall. Many
criticized Remington when he started the statute stating that the sculpture was impossible to create. It
was the first sculpture that had a horse on its hind legs. Many stated that gravity would play a factor in
his failure. They stated that when the bronze was cooling that it would run and the statute wouldn t
look correct. Well Remington decided he was going to prove them wrong. While he was making the
statue he realized where he could

Stereotypes And Prejudice Essay
How does this work?
At first I had to distinguish the difference between a stereotype and being prejudice. According to the
authors of our text Sensoy and DiAngelo, prejudice is a learned prejudgment about members of social
groups to which we don t belong. It is also based on limited knowledge about a group of people.
Judgments are made based on these prejudices and applied to everyone in a social group. The learned
prejudgment that our authors are talking about is what is referred to as a stereotype. A stereotype is a
belief about a certain group of people, while prejudice is a feeling based on their membership to a
certain group with a stereotype.
One part of our authors definition on p.29 made me stop and think for a moment. ... Show more

Gaining knowledge about a social group is a path to minimizing the effect of our prejudice, which can
lead to discrimination.
One of our assignments assigned in the course called the Funds of Knowledge I believe is a way to get
us to gain knowledge about a social group within our school and see how we can use this knowledge
to minimize the effect that our stereotypes in our classroom.
What explicit and implicit valuing of certain groups (p. 30) do you notice in your school or elsewhere?
Are there social benefits and penalties associated with them?
I don t know if I see a lot of explicit valuing of any group of students at my school. I know through the
Positive Behavior Intervention Support initiative explicit praise is given for following procedures and
meeting expectations.
I think I see more implicit valuing being done. This could be in the form of using stereotypes of social
groups when it comes to dealing with parents. I have heard teachers talking about parents and placing
them in stereotypes before getting to know them. An example would be oh yeah my new student s
parents just moved into Shadow Brook . This is another way of saying they are poor, because that area

How Did The Titanic Collapse
When the Titanic hit the iceberg, the iron rivets and steel failed because of fractures. Failure in
structural materials caused brittle fracture due to low temperature and extreme impact loading. The

Julius Caesar s death in William Shakespeare s play Julius Caesar was not the right thing to do
because very little evidence throughout has been given to prove that Caesar was or would have been a

Caesar mainly because they were jealous Jealous of his power , rather than for the good of Rome.
Anthony said All the conspirators save only he / Did that they did in envy of great Caesar; / He only in

The Azusa Street revival of 1906 to 1909
The Azusa Street revival of 1906 to 1909 was an event that popularised the practice of charismatic
worship first in the United States and eventually throughout the Christian world. However,
representations of the revival in the early years of the 20th century were biased, and distorted the
events that occurred. Early believers portrayed the revival as an eschatological narrative in which the
power of God came down to earth and revolutionised the church, especially with the gift of tongues.
Pentecostal historians later mythologised Azusa Street representing the revival as the birthplace of
Pentecostalism. On the other hand, conservatives portrayed the events of the revival as unbiblical and
sinful, while secular critics depicted the revival ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore such powerful claims were backed up with personal testimonies and letters which gave
the periodical more credibility on top of accessibility seeing as it was distributed for free. According to
Gaston Espinosa The Apostolic Faith paper was chock full of stories , which described divine healings
and spirit possession that became a driving force in attracting people to the mission. Blumhofer adds
that this periodical was also an effective representation as it was able to resonate with widely scattered
people . She continues that it also gave independent Charismatic s , a context in which to relate their
beliefs. However the periodical itself later changed its tone in the hands of later writers who
represented the movement in a negative light, especially after Seymour, the founder of the mission,
lost control of the paper. In Parham s hands the Apostolic faith journal ridiculed the leader of Azusa
Street, William Seymour, claiming bluntly he is not the leader of this movement of Azusa mission .
Parham later used the paper to condemn the Azusa street revival altogether as a darky camp meeting
However, After Parham disassociated himself from the mission; the paper lost credibility and
authority. Thus the early oral traditions and later Pentecostal writers continued to shape the way that
Pentecostals perceived themselves, silencing critics from within.

Fairy Tales And Modern Stories Bruno Bettelheim Summary
Bruno Bettelheim and Maria Tatar both composed articles on the effects that fairy tales have on people
s lives. Bruno Bettelheim wrote the article Fairy Tales and Modern Stories. In that article he believes
that fairy tales are considered safe stories and provide mental stability to children when they find
themselves in tough situations. When Maria Tatar wrote her article Introduction to Fairy Tales she also
elaborates on his point, but also explains these fairy tales have different effects on all ages. While both
authors agree that fairy tales have mixed effects on people, they also have many disagreements in
between. Both authors do ultimately believe that fairy tales are important in children s lives, but there
are similarities and differences between these two articles that need to be established. Bettelheim and
Tatar both explain that fairy tales have certain effects on children at a young age, but they way they
explain their effects are quite different from each other. Bettelheim uses his psychological studies to
draw a deeper understanding on the effects of these stories. He shows us that the unconscious mind ...

Egyptian Mummification And The Afterlife
Egyptian Mummification and the Afterlife The study of humans is commonly known as anthropology.
One major topic of humankind that anthropologists study is culture. Culture is described as the beliefs,
customs, arts, etc. of a particular society, group, place, or time. Culture is different among every group
of people and there are many different customs and behaviors involved in various cultures. It s easy
for people to be egocentric, or believe that their culture is superior to all other cultures. It can be
difficult for people to accept different behaviors and traditions from other cultures, especially when
they don t have first hand experience with these strange behaviors. For example, in North America,

mummification was a very lengthy and extensive process. This lengthy process took more than
seventy days to complete. The first step was to draw out the brain through the nostrils. A long, slightly
hooked tool was introduced into the brain through the nose, swirled around to liquefy the brain. The
head was then tipped forward and all contents of the skull poured out, again through the nose. The
next step was to remove the contents of the abdomen. The stomach, liver, lungs and intestines were all
removed. The heart always remained because the Egyptians believed that the heart was the most
important organ in the body and that the soul resided in the heart. After the organs were removed, they
were dried out and placed in canopic jars. Canopic jars are covered urns used in ancient Egyptian
burials to hold the entrails from an embalmed body. Four canopic jars were used for each mummy and
in each jar a different organ was placed inside. For example, the liver, intestines, lungs and stomach
would all be placed in separate canopic jars. Before the stomach was placed in a canopic jar, it was
filled with pure myrrh, cassia and other spices and sewn back together again. Once the organs were
removed from the body, the interior of the corpse was cleansed with palm wine and spices in order to
dry the body and protect it from decaying. After the body was filled with palm wine and spices, it was

Essay about Blood Platelet Bank
Solving Blood Platelet Banks Model Using

Introduction
A platelet is a disk shaped structure found in the blood of all mammals, playing a major role in the
coagulation of blood 1; platelets are transfused to patients to treat or prevent bleeding during surgery
and other medical conditions associated with platelet deficiency or function defect. Platelets shelf life
for transfusion purposes is up to six days; however, due to testing, platelets are generally not released
to inventory until 24 hours after the collection time. Therefore, usable platelet shelf life is generally
five days. This is an extremely short product shelf life compared to other blood products. This makes

order must be placed to look for the required blood platelets elsewhere or to look for donors.
Therefore, the inventory of these blood platelets needs to be actively managed. While a patient should
receive blood platelets of the same type, blood platelet substitution is possible between certain blood
platelet types. The distribution of blood type at different countries are listed in Table 1 and the average
demand and supply in USA is shown in Table 2. Table 3 shows all the substitution possibilities for all
blood types (BloodProducts 2011)1 , where 1 indicates that the substitution is allowed between these
two blood types, and 0 means that substitution is not allowed between these two blood types. Since the
distribution of supply does not match with that of demand, blood centers often run short of types B
and O. This, however, does not mean that supply of other blood types is abundant. Shortages of all
blood types occur, especially during summer and winter holidays (USABlood 2011). In addition to
blood platelet type, age of the blood platelet will also be considered in the developed model.

Numerical Modeling And Tropical Meteorology
My general areas of interest are numerical modeling and tropical meteorology. For example,
numerical simulation models of tropical cyclones is the problem that interest me most in atmospheric
science. Based on one or two problems in tropical meteorology or related fields, I hope to work based
on the existing models, and make unique contributions. My ultimate goal is to develop skills to
become a sophisticated researcher and teacher in the field, while pursuing a doctorate degree in
atmospheric sciences.
My interest on PDEs dates back to high school. Since typhoons frequently struck my hometown, I
developed interest in the forecast of tropical cyclones. Guided by a net pal with a master s degree in
meteorology, I started to systematically study the basics of weather prediction. However, when
reading Principles of Meteorological Analysis, I encountered PDEs describing dynamics of
atmosphere, which was incomprehensible for me then. Realizing that a solid math foundation would
be critical to further study in meteorology, I chose to study mathematics in University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA).
After finishing basic math courses, I challenged myself with a year long series of honors algebra
course, in which group theory, ring theory and Galois theory were covered. The homework sets and
take home exams in this course horned my skills of solving hard math problems. With limited clues
for each problem, I had to review related definitions and theorems carefully, and

Cause Of Air Pollution Essay
Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause
harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment
or built environment, into the atmosphere.
The atmosphere is a complex dynamic natural gaseous system that is essential to support life on planet
Earth. Stratospheric ozone depletiondue to air pollution has long been recognized as a threat to human
health as well as to the Earth s ecosystems.
Indoor air pollution and urban air quality are listed as two of the world s worst pollution problems in
the 2008 Blacksmith Institute World s Worst Polluted Places report.[1]

Smog is a kind of air pollution; the word smog is a portmanteau of smoke and fog. Classic smog
results from large amounts of coal burning in an area caused by a mixture of smoke and sulfur
dioxide. Modern smog does not usually come from coal but from vehicular and industrial emissions
that are acted on in the atmosphere by ultraviolet light from the sun to form secondary pollutants that
also combine with the primary emissions to form photochemical smog.
 Ground level ozone (O3) formed from NOx and VOCs. Ozone (O3) is a key constituent of the
troposphere (it is also an important constituent of certain regions of the stratosphere commonly known
as the Ozone layer). Photochemical and chemical reactions involving it drive many of the chemical
processes that occur in the atmosphere by day and by night. At abnormally high concentrations
brought about by human activities (largely the combustion of fossil fuel), it is a pollutant, and a
constituent of smog.
 Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) similarly formed from NOx and VOCs.
Minor air pollutants include:
 A large number of minor hazardous air pollutants. Some of these are regulated in USA under the
Clean Air Act and in Europe under the Air Framework Directive.
 A variety of persistent organic pollutants, which can attach to particulate matter.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic compounds that are resistant to

MacDonald. (Ballentine Books under The Random House Publishing Corporation, 1999, 266pp.

Some people were reading the newspaper in brightly lit kitchens. Some children were coloring with
brightly hued crayons. Some fathers were getting into cars in front of their beautiful homes. But there

We like to try to compartmentalize this part of our own society, this very real set of people who still

How could we not be? How could we really grasp, realize, come to terms with, comprehend such an

Majority Rules, Minority Rights By Elizabeth Bisbeth Silber
It is extremely important to protect the rights of the minority people in order to be able to live in a
democracy. One of the basis that a democracy follows by is the ability to protect the rights of the
minorities, so that everyone s voice can be heard and respected.
In an article called Majority Rules, Minority Rights by Elizabeth Bisbeth Silber, Bisbeth Silber talks
about how in the United States, the majority rules, but the minority has the right to rights, and explains
how the U.S. has to follow the rights given to its citizens. Bisbeth Silver writes, A sizable number of
Americans might loathe the idea of gay marriage. It might even be an affront to everything they hold

African Helmet Masks Essay
Masks are one of the most spiritually important art forms developed in Africa. Among the masks many
uses were; communicating with spirits and ancestors, serving as teaching aids in gender specific
initiation ceremonies, tools for maintaining order, enhancements for reenacted stories and myths,
symbols of rank and power, and a record for past leaders. I will be focussing on masks from the first
three categories. The masks, which are all Helmet style masks from West and Central Africa, illustrate
how artists from different tribes approached symbolism and visual storytelling. They also show what
was considered ideally beautiful for each clan. The first mask is from the Kuba (Bushongo) tribe in the

Interpretation of the symbolism behind the mask varies, however the rings are thought to invoke both
the ridges of a black moth chrysalis, representing a girl s transformation into a woman, and the ripples
of water created as a leader rose from the water, the home of female spirits. The masks elaborately
braided hair and scarification also refer to the appearance of this leader and what was considered
ideally beautiful. The expression on the face is to convey the wisdom, grace, and self control that the
young women would hopefully inherit. The third mask also deals with a secret society. This carved
wood Helmet Mask (inventory # 5 13259) is thought to be from the Bamileke society of Cameroon
and is dated to about 1976. Used in a men s secret society known as the Kwifo ( night ), masks in this
style disguised the members identities as they acted as a police force for the king. The Kwifo mediated
conflicts, pronounced legal sentences, and carried out the resulting punishments. Different masks
represented the various powers of the group and the carved headdress of this mask mirrors the prestige
caps worn by elites and kings. The intertwined legs represent the earth spider, which, because it lived
underground was thought to unite the world of the ancestors and spirits, who live in the earth, with
that of humans. Revered for its supernatural wisdom and power it is often consulted

A Writers Style Essay
The Pulitzer Prize winning writer N. Scott Momaday has become known as a very distinctive writer
who depicts the stories of the Native American life in almost poetic ways. He does an excellent job of
transporting the reader from the black and white pages of a book, to a world where every detail is
pointed out and every emotion felt when reading one of Momaday s books or other writings. This
style of writing that Momaday uses is very evident in his work The Way to Rainy Mountain, and made
even more apparent by reading a review of the book House Made of Dawn found on a web site run by

One aspect of the essay The Way to Rainy Mountain that I found somewhat distracting was when
Momaday would move off of the obvious aspect of his journey home. Even though I very much
enjoyed the amazing descriptions that he used in telling of the lands from where his people came, I
found it hard to grasp the purpose behind the side stories that were being told. I had latched onto the
story of him returning home to his grandmother s grave since that was the first aspect presented to me
as the reader. Once I had read the text over and studied it a little more deeply, I realized that the
purpose of the story was not to tell of Momaday s journey back to rainy mountain, but to tell the story
of the Kiowa s journey to Rainy Mountain. I thought it was a little distracting the first time I read
because I was distracted by all of the information that Momaday was telling about the Kiowa people
and their history. I kept expecting to hear of his trip back to Rainy Mountain and what he was
experiencing during this time. As I said before, it was not until I went back and reread the essay did I
catch on about the true point to the story. This might have been avoided if Momaday had made it
clearer that the focus of the story was on the Kiowa people and not his journey back to see his
grandmother s grave. Once I understood this

Operation Twist, a plan to buy long term U.S. debt and sell short term debt, which will result in a
flattening of the yield curve and a drop in long term debt yields, is a part of the expected future
according to the Fed. This means that the historical lows in interest rates that we are seeing will
continue in the short run. In the long run however, there looks to be a divergence from that short run
trend. Consumers and businesses in the long run will get away from the de leveraging process that we
are seeing in the recent past and currently and begin to build up cash that will circulate more
unreservedly. This will cause the Fed to set interest rates at higher levels in order to combat against the

Gentrification Of Death Essay
Gentrification of death: Behind London s burial crisis Seven boroughs in London contain no new
grave space, and a further 19 will be unable to meet expected demand for burials over the next 20
years, according to local authorities. The shortage of burial space in the capital is reaching a critical
stage in many of its 32 boroughs. Data shows that the majority of them currently lack the capacity to
supply enough graves to meet the level of demand suggested by mortality projections over the next
two decades. Changes to burial legislation gives London boroughs the authority to reuse graves in

The Council doesn t even have to get permission from families of the private graves, or even actually
find the families. Councils only have to show they tried to find them. However, Council spokesman
John Wade, said the local authority does not currently reuse graves but may in the future. A similar
scheme is already in place in the City of London, Cemetery Crematorium, where more than 1,500
graves have been reused. The 161 year old cemetery was on the verge of running out of space when
officials decided to begin reusing graves in 2009. It has proven to be a popular choice, with over 60
per cent of burials there now in reused graves. Trevor Davis, Westminster cemeteries manager,
believes the most effective way to stop cemeteries from overflowing is by reusing graves. He said:
New graves can continue to be developed on an indefinite basis as required through
overfill/overvaulting and through reuse. To avoid reusing graves, some cemeteries in London have
created new burial plots. A Greater London Authority audit from 2010 reported that Brockley
Ladywell Cemetery in Lewisham found new burial space by demolishing chapels and clearing land.
Even so, the entire authority of Lewisham will run out of spaces at its four cemeteries in between eight
and 10 years, said Council spokeswoman Alison Beck. Death by the numbers The shortage of burial

Relationships In The Odyssey
Love is tough business, the two involved in one relationship is expected to put equal effort into that
relationship. Some people might not do so well and others may have great relationships, but then we
come across ones that can stay together even through the toughest times. Sometimes the other person
in the relationship leaves for a while, either for work, emergencies, and sometimes they serve in the
military. Sometimes, they ll be gone for a few days, weeks, months or years. A lot could change for
both involved in that bond of love; moreover, the character of the people could also change. Just an

Defining Intelligence Essay
Intelligence is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as being the capacity to acquire and apply
knowledge. When knowledge is spoken of, it is generally used in terms of education. The extent of
education a person has achieved is then what most often determines how much knowledge one has
accumulated. Nevertheless, with this definition of intelligence in mind, one might possibly consider
the average person to be intelligent. After all, even a person who has never gone to school a day in
their life is capable of acquiring knowledge and applying it to some area of their life. Acquiring and
applying knowledge could be something as simple as being shown how to mop a floor and then
conducting the job using the newly gained know how.

Children, for instance, all have different areas in which they excel. A child who excels in school and is
listed on the honor roll each term would obviously be considered intelligent. However, a child who is
very talented in music but obtains bad marks in school might not be deemed a smart child by the
average person; nevertheless, this child would also be considered intelligent.
Once a person has an idea of what intelligence is and what it means, a final thought one might
consider is what influences are responsible for the different types of intellect. Two possible influences
are genetics and the environment in which one lives, with genetics being the strongest influence
(Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Most researchers agree that a person s genetics and environment interact
with one another to influence the outcome of that person s intelligence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302).
Genetic influences should be pretty obvious, so there should be no need to explain it; a person s
environment on the other hand, can involve several factors. An environment can consist of elements
such as a person s school, home, friendships, family relationships, and workplaces. All of these
components factor in to influence a person s intelligence.
In conclusion, I must say that intelligence can certainly be considered a broad word. It is a word that
has varying definitions depending on the source from which the definition comes. The reason for this
seems to be because people

The Affordability Problem Of Washington State
The affordability problem is across all states and largely affects the working wage earners and below.
(Housing Needs Assessment, 2015 booklet page 297) This is because throughout the nation there is a
large differences between minimum wage, housing wage, and the affordable units available. As noted
earlier in the essay, King County is experiencing a huge affordable housing Crisis. The 2015 Housing
Needs Assessment indicated that there are only 28 affordable units for every 100 extremely cost
burden families. Washington State is short in 166,058 affordable units, 2015. With Seattle economy
and populations growing each year these affordable units are necessary to maintain the working class.
In many states such as Washington, the housing wage is twice as much as the minimum wage per hour
creating a population of cost burdened residents. In the state of Washington there are 353,472
households that are severely cost burdened creating a large gap between the 100,098 affordable units

Textbooks Vs Textbooks In Textbooks
Portable technology such as iPads and tablets in the classroom have become such a norm in today s
society, and students and parents are believing that this is a good thing. Are they really considering all
of the effects of technology and how often it is being used? What is it doing to the education in
schools? Chou et al. states that as of 2012, there were over 2000 school districts that have adopted
different types of electronical devices and this amount is growing rapidly (11). According to the
National Center for Educational Statistics, that is about 11,000 schools as of 2000. If this trend
continues, almost all schools will have switched to using technology such as iPads and tablets in the
classroom. Teachers and administrators believe that this technology increase has helped students learn
more effectively, and more importantly, they believe that it is more cost effective than staying with the
hard copy textbooks. Teachers in K 12 schools should continue to use traditional textbooks instead of
replacing them with tablets because of the student s ability to retain more information, have a lesser
chance of being distracted, and the cost effectiveness of staying with textbooks. One important reason
to stay with traditional textbooks is that students retain information more effectively when they read
from print rather than reading from a screen. Naomi Baron, a linguist who has done a lot of research

Is rain wet? Is the sun bright? Is the sky blue on a clear, cloudless day? Could the fear millions of 16
and 17 year olds feel at this very moment have been prevented if they were given the right to vote?
The answer to all those questions is yes.
At age 16, we are legally allowed to emancipate ourselves from our parents. Boom! Suddenly we are
officially adults. . . free. . . at 16. But aren t you an adult at 18? Not according to emancipated 16 year

goes by the name of Jaws. This massive great white shark was a 26 foot mechanical beast. This
enormous steel gutted fish was connected to a crane arm which allowed the shark to tread just
underneath the surface of the water at a rapid rate. This gives the realistic feel of the amount of power
this shark has; being able to swim at such rates of speed. This adds to the fright element of movie
because we all know that big animals can be intimidating. Animals that are big and fast are even
scarier. Animals that are big, fast, and hungry, are a force to be reckoned with.
The film, Jaws, uses a variety of different photographic techniques. Panning was used quite often in
this movie to remind the viewer that they were a long distance from the shoreline. Additionally, plenty
of filming was done underwater. This allowed the audience to get a realistic feel for the surrounding
environment. The brilliant underwater imagery resulted with help from the naturally dark and chilling
emptiness of the foreign ocean world. A notable climatic shot is

Lowell Mill Research Paper
19 5 2000 The Lowell Mill Experiment In the early nineteenth century, F.C. Lowell and Nathan
Appleton lead to the creation of a mechanized and water powered system that could transform raw
cotton to woven material. This system was names the Lowell Mills . In order to protect their agrarian
ways, this textile industry was based of manual labors, which lead to the use women as their primary
work force. Unlike in the past, women were able to work in an area away from home and, though
significant, this small difference lead to big changes. Slowly but surely the textile industry increased
individuality amongst women and although the Doctrine of Separate Spheres (a representation of the
differences between men and women socially and economically) ... Show more content on

These problems actually led to the involvement in politics for women. Not too long after women
started joining the mills, the conditions began to rapidly deteriorate due to the depressed economy that
was caused by the creation of rivaling textile mills. The comfort that enticed the women was now
gone. The workload was increased, wages (already less than those of men) were lowered, dormitory
rents were raised, and the mills became a more stressful and more unsafe place to work, these setbacks
caused some workers to leave, but the rest stayed back and by 1834 went on a strike, opposing the
heads of the industry for taking away what they were promised. Sometimes the heads of the industry
would turn the women down, but they were persistent and sometimes it paid off. An example of this is
when the women struck in order to reduce the amount of time they worked; The heads of the industry
made the average worker work for twelve to fourteen hours a day but after two strikes and protests
they were able to reduce the work time to eleven hours a day. (Used this because I m not too sure I
paraphrased this properly). Along with strikes certain women rose above the rest as political figures. A
well known woman of sorts was Sarah Bagley; she was a fiery labor activist who organized the
Female Labor reform Association and led them in their fight to

Welfare Reform Pros And Cons
The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) was one
of the biggest legislation signed by Bill Clinton that focused on welfare. The main goals of this law
were to lessen the dependency on federal government welfare while increasing employment and
reducing poverty.
The program established a 5 year lifetime time limit for welfare benefits. Because the welfare program
was focused on increasing employment while decreasing poverty, Temporary Assistance for Needy
Families, TANF, was initiated. This program is a block grant that provides each state with a fixed
amount of money as long as the state meets certain conditions. PWRWORA restriction eligibility for
TANF and other means tested programs, required states ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to statistics, employment in never married mothers increased nearly 50%, single mothers
who HS dropouts increased by 2/3, young single mothers nearly doubled (Karger et al., 2007). But the
problem is, are these jobs sufficient enough to get these people out of poverty? There are issues with
employment of individuals. These issues include a lack of work experience and education as well as
poor health (Urban Institute, 2014). Needing to work also impacts parent(s) and their duties for their
children because of long hours, stressful commutes, ad stressful working conditions. These types of
stress lead kids to take on the responsibilities of their parents to take care of their younger siblings
(Boscia, 2010). Third, those who support welfare reform say that this legislation successfully
decreased poverty. Statistics do show that between 1994 2004, overall poverty rate dropped from
14.5% to 12.7% and child poverty dropped from 21.8% to 17.8% (Karger, 2007, p.

Retinitis Pigmentosa
The study proposed herein aims to accomplish the following: To determine the optimal exposure,
gamma, contrast, and brightness corrections necessary to increase the perceived contrast of images by
individuals affected by Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and to determine the optimal image overlay of input
signals corrected at both high and low thresholds such that perceived contrast is maximized.
Additionally, this study will develop an I/O system of minimal necessary size responsible for image
processing following image acquisition from micro cameras that will output post processed image data
onto small, high resolution LCD/LED screens contained in a wearable binocular device similar to
commercially available home theater glasses. Lastly, this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is one of such currently untreatable causes of blindness. RP, along with Age
Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are amongst the more frequent causes of blindness in the
developed world (Greenwald 2009), while RP itself is the leading cause of inherited blindness
(Palanker 2004). To understand the diverse causes of RP, a basic understanding of visual perception is
required. Phototransduction (conversion of light to electrical signals) occurs first, which is initiated by
two types of photoreceptors: rods and cones. These two types vary in their function as rods are
primarily responsible for night vision and lack sensitivity to color while cones function in color vision.
Light contacts these photoreceptors, and isomerizes a retinaldehydechromophore (retinal) which is
bound to varying types of opsin proteins corresponding in their reactivity to different wavelengths of
light. Upon absorption of a photon of light, the chromophore 11 cis retinal is isomerized to the all
trans confirmation, which subsequently causes a series of molecular interactions which ultimately
result in the electrical response of the photoreceptors (Vugler 2010). As 11 cis retinal is required to
absorb photons of light, this compound must be regenerated, a function that is performed with the aid
of nearby cells of the retinal pigment epithelium

Do Boycotts Work?
December 1, 1955, an African American woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a
white passenger on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. By refusing to give up her seat, Rosa Parks
was arrested. Dr. King held a meeting at his church the next night to discuss ways of dealing with her
arrest and protesting her arrest. So, they decided that they would have a bus boycott, beginning on
Monday, December the 5th. Her refusal caused what is now known as the Montgomery Boycott. Since
the boycott caused a larger quantity of all black patrons, Dr. King realized that although a boycott was
needed, many of the patrons were afraid of taking a chance on boycotting because of the effect it may

The boycott changed the way black people could get around without using the bus system. Because of
state laws, bus segregation was allowed, forcing an organized bus boycott. This boycott caused
decreases, the demand curve shifted to the left, showing a higher availability of empty seats for bus
transportation and a lot less potential Black patrons as bus riders. With the boycott organized by Dr.
King for the citizens, blacks represented 44% of the population, so with the choices of transportation
limited for this demographic, substitute means were put in place from what was offered by the bus
transportation company. The substitutes that were organized included car pools and other means of
transportation which acted as competition for the transportation bus business. The bus companies were
ready to give in because they saw their profits decreased, and a rise in the number of citizens using an
alternate means of transportation. Because of the carpooling, the demand curve shifted to the right,
and the profits for the bus transportation industry

Dialectical Journal For The Giver
Captain Jay Jonas never heard of such a radio transmission before. World Trade Center... ten sixty.
Send every available ambulance, everything you ve got to the World Trade Center... Now! Ten sixty
meant a catastrophic event. Jonas got his first look at the North Tower.
Smoke and flames were spewing out of gaping holes bored by American Airlines Boeing 767 that
crashed between the 93 and 99 floors on the North face of the 110 story building. Each of the North
Tower floors were roughly an acre. The top 20 floors engulfed in flames, he was staring at a 20 acre
fire raging 90 stories above. He thought in his head that, This is the most unbelievable sight I ve ever
seen. Meldrum parked the fire truck on the West Street in front of the ... Show more content on

They had flashlights, radios, air packs, coils of rope, rescue webbing, a six foot hook, and a Halligan,
which is like a crowbar with special edges. Jonas s men each were carrying anywhere from 90 to 110
pounds of gear. The higher that they climbed, the stronger that they could smell the jet fuel and smoke
also, the building began cracking, cracking, and moaning. They were shocked by how calm most of
the civilians where many of them patted the men on the back and said, God bless you. and Thank you.
Jonas saw more people with severe burns the men had taken their jackets off and covered up women
whose clothes and skin had been burned off.
It s awful to see. Jonas thought, but this really is New York at its best. Everybody is doing the right
thing, and they re doing it without being told. Before the men made it to the 12th floor, Jonas and his
men had responded to two separate Mayday ( distress signal ) messages. In both cases a firefighter
needed help because he had chest pains from the climb. When Jonas reached the 27th floor he met
Captain Billy Burke from Engine 21 and firefighter Andy Fredericks from squad 18.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a viral infection that is spread by the tiger mosquito (Aedes Aegypti). It has black and
yellow strips and usually bites in the early morning or at dawn. The virus enters and breeds in white
blood cells. Symptoms typically start appearing five to eight days after being ill. The virus has five
diverse styles of increasing severity. Infection with one category gives lifetime immunity to it and
short term immunity to the other categories. The dengue virus isn t transmittable and can t be spread
from individual to individual. Maximum individuals will only experience mild symptoms such as an
simple fever.
How do you get viral fever?
Viral fever is usually transmitted via the air by droplets from diseased folks, or by touching plague
ridden secretions.
Treatment options
Antimalarial drugs are accessible for the treatment of malaria and even seasonal viral fever; quite the
reverse, there is no drug available for the treatment of dengue. It is treated with helpful measures such
as blood transfusion and fluid restoration. However, the prescription used in malaria fundamentally
depends on where the septicity was acquired and on the type of infecting parasite.

  • 2. Slumdog Millionaire Ambition Ambition is an eager, and sometimes insatiable desire to fulfill something in one s life; it is when they seek something that is beyond them or their circumstance. In fact, ambition allows an individual to look for significance in a life that is otherwise devoid of meaning. Moreover, it is a prevalent force that harbours their accomplishments and considerably influences the outcomes in their lives. Jamal Malik, the hero of the film, Slumdog Millionaire, effectively portrays this idea as he attempts to surpass the afflictions of his youth by pursuing a meaningful life with his one true love. Through this character, the director, Danny Boyle illustrates how an individual s ambition may instil in them the power to overcome even the greatest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, he lives in a society where the predominant caste system inherently assigns each individual with a predetermined role. Thus, children like Jamal, Salim, and their companion, Latika, become both socially and spatially excluded by society. In fact, they are denied the same opportunities as regular children and their freedoms are regulated by the absent, yet restrictive influence of the social system. It is absent because these kids lack the basic necessities to aid them in their survival; they are on their own, with no one to look out for them except for themselves. On the other hand, the same system limits these kids by denying them access to resources that would help improve their situation (i.e. education, healthcare, etc.). Through the fates of such characters, the viewer is given glimpses into the relatively unexplored, misunderstood and complex world of street children, as their live their lives outside the conventional view of childhood. More often than not, those who are born into such impoverished conditions, remain in the same state, up until their death. Jamal, for instance, becomes a chai wallah...[who serves] tea [to] people. • 3. Poverty Is A Global Concern And Its Eradication Poverty is a global concern and its eradication is becoming surmountable. This is primarily due to the challenges posed by international and national causes respectively. Besides, the complexity of the phenomenon has not lend itself to be easily eradicated. Little wonder the world continues to struggle to eradicate poverty. Africa is one of the poorest countries on the universe and research and data show that Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in Sub Sahara (UNDP, 2015). Sierra Leone s poverty has been a growing concern in spite of its numerous natural resources and international financial and economic interventions. It is therefore worth investigating the trends of the country s poverty and how it has impacted its people in the country. Therefore, task of this paper is to examine the trend in which poverty in Sierra Leone is either changing or stagnating and the disadvantages associated with poverty among children. Consideration will also be given to policy in relation to the findings. The first part of the essay will give a summary of the historical background of the country. This chapter will throw light into the socio political and economic foundations of Sierra Leone. Chapter two of the essay will concentrate on the definition of poverty as perceived by different authors. These definitions throw light into the different perspectives of poverty and discuss various measurements in assessing poverty especially in developing countries. The third ... Group Conformity is the way that human beings are affected by the behavior of others around them. The first experiment that studied group conformity was performed by Jenness in 1932 (Conformity 4). Following this experiment many more were performed such as The Stanford County Prison Experiment, Solomon Asch Experiment, Candid Camera Elevator Experiment, The Milgram Experiment, and the Bystander effect (Reyes). Zimbardo was interested in learning about whether the brutality in the prisons was because of the behavior of the guards towards the prisoners or if it was because of the prison environment. He beginned his experiment by placing an ad in the newspaper calling out for males that were willing to be part of the experiment, 70 individuals answered the ad. Every individual had to go through a background check to check for mental issues or past drug or alcohol use. In the end only 24 students were chosen (McLeod). The prisoners were treated just like they would be treated at a your average prison. Half of the 24 students that were selected were prisoners and the other half were the guards. The guards had no specific direction as to how to treat the prisoners, Guards were instructed to do whatever they thought was necessary to maintain law and order in the prison and to command the respect of the prisoners. No physical violence was permitted Mcleod 11). As the days went on the prison began to seem and become more like a real life one was. The guards began to become more aggressive in order to maintain control over the inmates. Some of the prisoners began to show early signs of depression by the third day. Although the experiment was supposed to go on for a longer period of time, it had to be cancelled on the sixth day. This concluded that People will readily conform to the social roles they are expected to play, especially if the roles are as strongly stereotyped as those of the prison guards (Mcleod ... Today, if you turn on the television or open a magazine, one comes face to face with unrealistically thin models. This epidemic has increased the number of women who are dissatisfied with their bodies. This paper will assess several articles, literature reviews, and papers that relate to the media s portrayal of the ideal women s body being extremely thin. Each source elaborates on the dissatisfaction women have with their bodies as a result of the content released in the media. Irving (2008) defines media as a Tool used to transmit ideas, images, messages, or information to the public. The media strategically targets adolescent females. This is specifically ages 13 18 (Steinberg Morris, 2001). During these precious years of life, adolescents go through periods of struggle with identity. The most prominent struggle is understanding their role in society, and conforming to social norms. Media today offers a distorted vision of the world, and therefore makes it difficult for adolescents to decipher what is actually realistic (Van Vonderen Kinnally, 2012). About a century ago, birth control in any form was illegal. As women s rights came to the forefront of American politics, women fought for the right to vote and gained the ability to use contraception and eventually get abortions. In 1921, The American Birth Control League formed ; this later became Planned Parenthood, and gained thirty thousand members in its first three years. This organization founded the first birth control clinic. In 1938, the US Circuit of Appeals decided a case that permitted physicians to give information about contraception to their patients. States could only enact abortion laws protecting the life of the fetus only in the third trimester, but exceptions must be made to protect the life of the mother. Linda Coffee and Sarah Weddington fought the case on behalf of Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe) under the claim that the Texas law banning abortions violated Roe s constitutional rights to privacy (McBride, Roe v. Wade). The Supreme Court decided in Roe s favor in a 7 2 decision (Oyez, Roe v. Wade). The decision deemed marriage, contraception, and child rearing as part of a Constitution guaranteed zone of privacy from the 1st, 4th, 9th, and 14th amendments. This decision also deemed a woman s right to terminate her pregnancy as part of this zone of privacy. The opposition gave three justifications for banning abortions. The first was a Victorian like social concern to discourage illicit sexual conduct, the second to protect the life of the mother, and the third to protect prenatal life. The court rejected the first two reasons, and ruled that fetuses do not fit the definition of a person (McBride) The court also ruled that if a fetus is viable, then states may disallow abortions as long as the life of the mother is not at stake, and states may restrict abortions during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Forty six states were affected by this decision. In 1992, the United States Supreme Court ruled on the Casey v. Planned Parenthood case. While this case affirmed Roe. v Wade, it ... • 10. The Invisible Mother And Lennie Analysis The Invisible Mother and Lennie When a person thinks of a true motherly bond they most likely think of warmth, happiness, someone safe, and reliable. In of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie has to live a life without his mother and because of that it affects the rest of his life . Not having access to the sacred feeling of a mother s love can alter anyone s life. That is why Lennie realizes he needs something to fill that hole in his heart with something that at least resembles a mother s love. If that bond is taken away then a person is left bare to the elements of the cold harsh world. There is something about soft creatures that gives Lennie a sense of serenity and inner peace. The inner peace he gets is the reason why Lennie from Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, loves mice, puppies, rabbits, and anything soft because it represents a true motherly love he never had. Mice in the novel has a deeper symbolic meaning than just it being a petite pet. What Lennie loves about mice is their reliability and stability. These soft natured mice are so easy to find for Lennie. Mice also have a motherly quality that Lennie never had. A true mother is known for always being there no matter what. In the beginning of the book Lennie and George are walking towards their new job, Lennie is holding a mouse but George catches him, George says You gonna give me that mouse or do i have to sock you? ... Lennie reluctantly reached in his pocket. I don t know why I can t keep it. It ain t nobody s mouse. I didn t steal it. I found it lyin right beside the road (9). As long as Lennie is looking for mice then the mice are alway there for Lennie. The only thing stopping him most of the time is George. That is why Lennie needs to sneak around to get what he loves. Even though he loves the mice he is a danger to them. In a way when Lennie is with the mice he feels like he has mother again but when a mouse bites him he goes back to reality and kills it. When he kills the mice he feels remorse and then makes the desperate search to find something to replace it. It s important because Lennie never had an accepting person s shoulder to cry on. Early believers portrayed the revival as an eschatological narrative in which the power of God came down to earth and revolutionised the church, especially with the gift of tongues. • 20. Egyptian Mummification And The Afterlife Egyptian Mummification and the Afterlife The study of humans is commonly known as anthropology. One major topic of humankind that anthropologists study is culture. Culture is described as the beliefs, customs, arts, etc. of a particular society, group, place, or time. Culture is different among every group of people and there are many different customs and behaviors involved in various cultures. It s easy for people to be egocentric, or believe that their culture is superior to all other cultures. It can be difficult for people to accept different behaviors and traditions from other cultures, especially when they don t have first hand experience with these strange behaviors. When someone passed away, the body was taken to the embalmers by the relatives, who then chose the method and quality of mummification. The best and most expensive methods were used on the wealthy, but there were cheaper alternatives for the poor. Every Egyptian was entitled to mummification, with the exception of some criminals. The best and most costly form of mummification was a very lengthy and extensive process. This lengthy process took more than seventy days to complete. The first step was to draw out the brain through the nostrils. A long, slightly hooked tool was introduced into the brain through the nose, swirled around to liquefy the brain. The head was then tipped forward and all contents of the skull poured out, again through the nose. The next step was to remove the contents of the abdomen. The stomach, liver, lungs and intestines were all removed. The heart always remained because the Egyptians believed that the heart was the most important organ in the body and that the soul resided in the heart. After the organs were removed, they were dried out and placed in canopic jars. Canopic jars are covered urns used in ancient Egyptian burials to hold the entrails from an embalmed body. Four canopic jars were used for each mummy and in each jar a different organ was placed inside. For example, the liver, intestines, lungs and stomach would all be placed in separate canopic jars. Before the stomach was placed in a canopic jar, it was filled with pure myrrh, cassia and other spices and sewn back together again. Once the organs were removed from the body, the interior of the corpse was cleansed with palm wine and spices in order to dry the body and protect it from decaying. Essay about Blood Platelet Bank Solving Blood Platelet Banks Model Using 1 Corresponding Introduction A platelet is a disk shaped structure found in the blood of all mammals, playing a major role in the coagulation of blood 1; platelets are transfused to patients to treat or prevent bleeding during surgery and other medical conditions associated with platelet deficiency or function defect. Platelets shelf life for transfusion purposes is up to six days; however, due to testing, platelets are generally not released to inventory until 24 hours after the collection time. For example, numerical simulation models of tropical cyclones is the problem that interest me most in atmospheric science. Based on one or two problems in tropical meteorology or related fields, I hope to work based on the existing models, and make unique contributions. My ultimate goal is to develop skills to become a sophisticated researcher and teacher in the field, while pursuing a doctorate degree in atmospheric sciences. My interest on PDEs dates back to high school. Since typhoons frequently struck my hometown, I developed interest in the forecast of tropical cyclones. Guided by a net pal with a master s degree in meteorology, I started to systematically study the basics of weather prediction. However, when reading Principles of Meteorological Analysis, I encountered PDEs describing dynamics of atmosphere, which was incomprehensible for me then. Realizing that a solid math foundation would be critical to further study in meteorology, I chose to study mathematics in University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). After finishing basic math courses, I challenged myself with a year long series of honors algebra course, in which group theory, ring theory and Galois theory were covered. The homework sets and take home exams in this course horned my skills of solving hard math problems. I had latched onto the story of him returning home to his grandmother s grave since that was the first aspect presented to me as the reader. Once I had read the text over and studied it a little more deeply, I realized that the purpose of the story was not to tell of Momaday s journey back to rainy mountain, but to tell the story of the Kiowa s journey to Rainy Mountain. When knowledge is spoken of, it is generally used in terms of education. The extent of education a person has achieved is then what most often determines how much knowledge one has accumulated. Nevertheless, with this definition of intelligence in mind, one might possibly consider the average person to be intelligent. After all, even a person who has never gone to school a day in their life is capable of acquiring knowledge and applying it to some area of their life. A child who excels in school and is listed on the honor roll each term would obviously be considered intelligent. However, a child who is very talented in music but obtains bad marks in school might not be deemed a smart child by the average person; nevertheless, this child would also be considered intelligent. Once a person has an idea of what intelligence is and what it means, a final thought one might consider is what influences are responsible for the different types of intellect. Two possible influences are genetics and the environment in which one lives, with genetics being the strongest influence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Most researchers agree that a person s genetics and environment interact with one another to influence the outcome of that person s intelligence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Genetic influences should be pretty obvious, so there should be no need to explain it; a person s environment on the other hand, can involve several factors. An environment can consist of elements such as a person s school, home, friendships, family relationships, and workplaces. All of these components factor in to influence a person s intelligence. Are they really considering all of the effects of technology and how often it is being used? What is it doing to the education in schools? Chou et al. states that as of 2012, there were over 2000 school districts that have adopted different types of electronical devices and this amount is growing rapidly (11). According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, that is about 11,000 schools as of 2000. If this trend continues, almost all schools will have switched to using technology such as iPads and tablets in the classroom. Teachers and administrators believe that this technology increase has helped students learn more effectively, and more importantly, they believe that it is more cost effective than staying with the hard copy textbooks. Teachers in K 12 schools should continue to use traditional textbooks instead of replacing them with tablets because of the student s ability to retain more information, have a lesser chance of being distracted, and the cost effectiveness of staying with textbooks. The unusual story takes place on the seasides of Amity Island. When Chief Brody uncovers the partial body of a teenage girl with shark like bites, Chief Brody contacts a shark specialist to verify if the bite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His acts of heroism are acted out several times throughout the film. Of course, he also had his boat captain and a marine biologist along for the wild ride. This plays out to be a team like environment, in which they contributed their different individual strengths towards the common goal; hunting down the massive man eating shark. This film also used countless props; however, there is truly only one that needs to be discussed, and goes by the name of Jaws. This massive great white shark was a 26 foot mechanical beast. This enormous steel gutted fish was connected to a crane arm which allowed the shark to tread just underneath the surface of the water at a rapid rate. This gives the realistic feel of the amount of power this shark has; being able to swim at such rates of speed. This adds to the fright element of movie because we all know that big animals can be intimidating. Animals that are big and fast are even scarier. Animals that are big, fast, and hungry, are a force to be reckoned with. The film, Jaws, uses a variety of different photographic techniques. Panning was used quite often in this movie to remind the viewer that they were a long distance from the shoreline. Additionally, plenty of filming was done underwater. This allowed the audience to get a realistic feel for the surrounding environment. The brilliant underwater imagery resulted with help from the naturally dark and chilling emptiness of the foreign ocean world. A notable climatic shot is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Lowell Mill Research Paper 19 5 2000 The Lowell Mill Experiment In the early nineteenth century, F.C. Lowell and Nathan Appleton lead to the creation of a mechanized and water powered system that could transform raw cotton to woven material. This system was names the Lowell Mills . In order to protect their agrarian ways, this textile industry was based of manual labors, which lead to the use women as their primary work force. Unlike in the past, women were able to work in an area away from home and, though significant, this small difference lead to big changes. Slowly but surely the textile industry increased individuality amongst women and although the Doctrine of Separate Spheres (a representation of the differences between men and women socially and economically) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These problems actually led to the involvement in politics for women. Not too long after women started joining the mills, the conditions began to rapidly deteriorate due to the depressed economy that was caused by the creation of rivaling textile mills. The comfort that enticed the women was now gone. The workload was increased, wages (already less than those of men) were lowered, dormitory rents were raised, and the mills became a more stressful and more unsafe place to work, these setbacks caused some workers to leave, but the rest stayed back and by 1834 went on a strike, opposing the heads of the industry for taking away what they were promised. Sometimes the heads of the industry would turn the women down, but they were persistent and sometimes it paid off. An example of this is when the women struck in order to reduce the amount of time they worked; The heads of the industry made the average worker work for twelve to fourteen hours a day but after two strikes and protests they were able to reduce the work time to eleven hours a day. (Used this because I m not too sure I paraphrased this properly). Along with strikes certain women rose above the rest as political figures. A well known woman of sorts was Sarah Bagley; she was a fiery labor activist who organized the Female Labor reform Association and led them in their fight to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Welfare Reform Pros And Cons The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) was one of the biggest legislation signed by Bill Clinton that focused on welfare. The main goals of this law were to lessen the dependency on federal government welfare while increasing employment and reducing poverty. The program established a 5 year lifetime time limit for welfare benefits. Because the welfare program was focused on increasing employment while decreasing poverty, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, TANF, was initiated. This program is a block grant that provides each state with a fixed amount of money as long as the state meets certain conditions. According to statistics, employment in never married mothers increased nearly 50%, single mothers who HS dropouts increased by 2/3, young single mothers nearly doubled (Karger et al., 2007). But the problem is, are these jobs sufficient enough to get these people out of poverty? There are issues with employment of individuals. These issues include a lack of work experience and education as well as poor health (Urban Institute, 2014). Needing to work also impacts parent(s) and their duties for their children because of long hours, stressful commutes, ad stressful working conditions. These types of stress lead kids to take on the responsibilities of their parents to take care of their younger siblings (Boscia, 2010). Third, those who support welfare reform say that this legislation successfully decreased poverty. Statistics do show that between 1994 2004, overall poverty rate dropped from 14.5% to 12.7% and child poverty dropped from 21.8% to 17.8% (Karger, 2007, p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Retinitis Pigmentosa The study proposed herein aims to accomplish the following: To determine the optimal exposure, gamma, contrast, and brightness corrections necessary to increase the perceived contrast of images by individuals affected by Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and to determine the optimal image overlay of input signals corrected at both high and low thresholds such that perceived contrast is maximized. Additionally, this study will develop an I/O system of minimal necessary size responsible for image processing following image acquisition from micro cameras that will output post processed image data onto small, high resolution LCD/LED screens contained in a wearable binocular device similar to commercially available home theater glasses. RP, along with Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are amongst the more frequent causes of blindness in the developed world (Greenwald 2009), while RP itself is the leading cause of inherited blindness (Palanker 2004). To understand the diverse causes of RP, a basic understanding of visual perception is required. Phototransduction (conversion of light to electrical signals) occurs first, which is initiated by two types of photoreceptors: rods and cones. These two types vary in their function as rods are primarily responsible for night vision and lack sensitivity to color while cones function in color vision. Light contacts these photoreceptors, and isomerizes a retinaldehydechromophore (retinal) which is bound to varying types of opsin proteins corresponding in their reactivity to different wavelengths of light. Upon absorption of a photon of light, the chromophore 11 cis retinal is isomerized to the all trans confirmation, which subsequently causes a series of molecular interactions which ultimately result in the electrical response of the photoreceptors (Vugler 2010). As 11 cis retinal is required to absorb photons of light, this compound must be regenerated, a function that is performed with the aid of nearby cells of the retinal pigment epithelium ... December 1, 1955, an African American woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. By refusing to give up her seat, Rosa Parks was arrested. Dr. King held a meeting at his church the next night to discuss ways of dealing with her arrest and protesting her arrest. So, they decided that they would have a bus boycott, beginning on Monday, December the 5th. Her refusal caused what is now known as the Montgomery Boycott. Because of state laws, bus segregation was allowed, forcing an organized bus boycott. With the boycott organized by Dr. King for the citizens, blacks represented 44% of the population, so with the choices of transportation limited for this demographic, substitute means were put in place from what was offered by the bus transportation company. The substitutes that were organized included car pools and other means of transportation which acted as competition for the transportation bus business. The bus companies were ready to give in because they saw their profits decreased, and a rise in the number of citizens using an alternate means of transportation.
