A long and detailed look at what mise-en-scene is and how it can be looked at in different aspects of film language. The presentation is split into the areas of Setting & Props; Costume, Hair and Make-up; Lighting and Colour; Positioning of Objects and People; Facial expression and Body
Language. Each section contains a range of examples (many of which are gifs and videos which obviously won't play on here) and some activities for students to engage with.

A long PDF that has been used to introduce GCSE Film Students to the complicated process of identifying and explaining the use of camera movement. This is a fairly detailed series of slides which I have used in school for a couple of classes now. As it is a PDF the clips do not play but where possible I've used SlideShare and YouTube to embed the relevant videos which is why some images or slides may appear repeated. Included on the slide are a list of the videos referred to and used. . Similarly, as it was designed to be used in lessons the overall 'structure' is somewhat disjointed and is missing slides that includes answers or ideas that were discussed in lessons. In order to help where possible, I've included large versions of worksheets so that these can be clipped and printed out if necessary. Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. There are three ways we can look at how the
film communicates with the viewer:
1. Its formality (or social distance)
2. Its point of view
3. Its directness
3. In film we can identify the formality of part of
a film through its use of shot types in a
scene.
these shot types effect how emotionally
attached or detached the viewer feels to the
characters.

into the subjects
personal space by
closing down the
distance between the
camera and the
person we’re filming.
Does this makes us

8. This shot is social,
we are able to relate
to the characters
without being
uncomfortably close
to them, or so far
removed that it is
hard to relate to
them.
10. This shot is
impersonal because
we are far away from
the subject, meaning
we are emotionally
detached from them.
11. Directness refers to whether the subject of
the video looks / talks directly to the viewer.
This is described as either direct or indirect.

16. Point of view refers to whose perspective the
narrative is told from.
In film it is less obvious than in books whose
point of view a story is being told from,
however if we look at how scenes are filmed
and the use of voiceover we can identify this.
18. Often referred to as a POV shot, it is where we
directly see the scene through the characters
eyes.
