Biodegradation or biological degradation is the phenomenon of biological transformation of organic compounds by living organisms, particularly the microorganisms.
Biodegradation basically involves the conversion of complex organic molecules to simpler (and mostly non-toxic) ones. The term biotransformation is used for incomplete biodegradation of organic compounds involving one or a few reactions. Biotransformation is employed for the synthesis of commercially important products by microorganisms.
Bioremediation refers to the process of using microorganisms to remove the environmental pollutants i.e. the toxic wastes found in soil, water, air etc. The microbes serve as scavengers in bioremediation. The removal of organic wastes by microbes for environmental clean-up is the essence of bioremediation. The other names used (by some authors) for bioremediation are bio-treatment, bio-reclamation and bio-restoration.
It is rather difficult to show any distinction between biodegradation and bioremediation. Further, in biotechnology, most of the reactions of biodegradation/bioremediation involve xenobiotic.

Hydrocarbon are major constituents of crude oil and petroleum. They can be biodegraded by naturally-occurring microorganisms in freshwater and marine environments under a variety of aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The ability of microorganisms - bacteria, archaea, fungi, or algae - to break down hydrocarbons is the basis for natural and enhanced bioremediation. To promote biodegradation, amendments such as nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizer are often added to stimulate microbial growth and metabolism
The USEPA defines biodegradation as a process by which microbial organisms transform or alter (through metabolic or enzymatic action) the structure of chemicals introduced into the environment.
According to the definition by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the term biodegradation is “Breakdown of a substance catalyzed by enzymes in vitro or in vivo.
The term is often used in relation to ecology, waste management, biomedicine, and the natural environment (bioremediation) and is now commonly associated with environmentally friendly products that are capable of decomposing back into natural elements.
Biodegradable matter is generally organic material such as plant and animal matter and other substances originating from living organisms, or artificial materials that are similar enough to plant and animal matter to be put to use by microorganisms.

The major challenge in municipal solid waste management using landfills is
leachate, which causes a significant threat to subsurface resources. Leachate is the
liquid that passes through soil and has extracted dissolved and suspended solids from
it. Municipal solid waste landfills are one of the severe environmental impacts on the
urban environment. Landfills are one of the practices of disposal of municipal solid
waste in the Indian scenario. Understanding the leachate composition is an equally
important and critical factor in terms of environmental production. When the
municipal solid waste is buried in a landfill, physical, chemical and biological
reactions occur, and the refuse reacts with the moisture present in the soil. Studying
leachate characteristics and its treatment is essential as it could threaten the
ecosystem. Rapid urbanization is one of the major contributions to the generation of
municipal solid waste. The present study reviews the different applications available
to treat the leachate generated from municipal solid waste landfills. Nano-particles
are recently gaining great interest in the protection of the environment, which will
ensure sustainable development.

The kinetics of the destruction of standard museum strains of microorganisms as a result of photodynamic action of red light and a number of non-toxic photosensitizers in the process of water conditioning has been studied experimentally. Prokaryotic cells of Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, eukaryotic cells of Candida albicans ATCC 24433 were used as the objects of the study. Eosin H, sodium fluorescein, methylene blue and riboflavin (vitamin B2) in concentrations of 10 mg/l served as photosensitizers. A photodynamic effect was established with respect to microorganism cells, leading to their death in the presence of photosensitizers and red light. It has been shown that riboflavin and fluorescein are the most effective for eukaryotes (on the example of Candida albicans ATCC 24433), which help to reduce the number of colonies of cells in 2 hours of observations by more than 3.0 and 11.0 times, respectively. It was found that the death of prokaryotic cells in the case of Escherichia coli ATCC 35218 is most effective in causing methylene blue, riboflavin (vitamin B2). For 2 hours of observations in their presence due to photodynamic action, microflora decreases in 36.0 and 90.0 times, respectively. The photodynamic effect of eosin against the microorganisms under study was the smallest, which is explained by the peculiarities of its chemical structure, including phenolic groups, which are known to exhibit an antioxidant effect. It is shown that fluorescein and methylene blue are most promising for effective lethal action against pathogenic microflora in pool water. Riboflavin is most effective for purification of drinking water used for cooking and drinking in public, including pre-school and school meals, which will allow not only to exclude the possibility of mass poisonings, but also to provide a daily intake of vitamin B2 with a glass of water.

Review on Biodegradation of Plastic Waste by Micro Organismsijtsrd
Plastics are light weighted, durable, corrosion resistant materials, strong, and inexpensive. Scientists have reported many adverse effects of the plastic in the environment and human health. The plastics at room temperatures are not considered as toxic. The toxic properties are found in plastics, when heat is released from the food material in which they are covered and then they produce serious human health problems. This review article covers the list of plastics, plastic degrading efficiency by microbes and their involvement to degrade the plastic waste. Removal of dye from polluted water using novel nano manganese oxide-based mat...Dr. Md. Aminul Islam
Dyes are priority pollutants, commonly found at significant concentrations in textile effluents. The presence of dyes stuffs in wastewater can cause severe problems to aquatic life and human beings. Therefore, the removal of dyes from wastewater is important in order to minimize their hazardous effects on the environment. One way of removing dyes is to use nanosized manganese oxides (MnOs). To date, there has been much work reported on the use of nanosized MnOs as sorbents for dyestuffs. They are promising sorbents for commercial use due to their amorphous nature, high specific surface areas (SSA), mesoporous structure, and low to the moderate point of zero charge (pHPZC). This review summarizes the toxicity and recent advances for removing dyes from wastewater using nanosized MnO sorbents. The article also describes the various experimental parameters necessary for adsorption optimization, such as adsorption time, pH, initial dye concentration, amount of sorbent and temperature. Adsorption mechanisms investigated by various modeling approaches are also discussed. In particular, it was observed that much work has been reported on the use of birnessite and its composites for dye removal. There are many papers reporting on the use of MnO in batch mode dye removal, but very few that report on the use of MnO in continuous column removal systems. Therefore, there is still a considerable need for further research to develop effective and economical large scale MnO column systems for commercial use.
— Environmental care is an increasing concern in our society, and therefore integrated, circular economy allowing to close the industrial cycle is an urging demand. This project employs a residue of the food industry to recover the wastewaters from the textile industry, allowing closing the loop in two different industrial processes. Orange peel is a very abundant residue in the food industry. By chemical modification of the orange peel, we aim to produce a biosorbent to be employed in the treatment of the textile industry wastewater containing cationic dyes. In this project, we evaluate the capacity of the treated orange peels as cationic interchanger with different dissolutions of copper (II). Finally, their capacities as biosorbents were evaluated with four cationic dyes, examining the influence of different parameters like: biosorbent concentration, contact time, temperature and pH of the medium. An adsorption between 51 and 92 % was reached with the first treatment and also the possibility of the biosorbent recovery.

The study was carried out at Akpehe poultry farm, Makurdi,on the Tiv and the Fulani Nigerian local chicken ecotypes. The variability on clutch traits were estimated on 540 hens produced from the mating of 40 hens and 4 sires each for the Tiv and the Fulani local chicken ecotypes, randomly selected from rural populations. The hens were housed singly and hand mated. Daily egg production was recorded individually. The data was organized according to clutch size, clutch number, pause number and pause length. SAS procedure was used to analyze the variability on clutch traits within and between the ecotypes.Clutch size has the highest variability within the ecotype. Between the ecotypes, the Tiv ecotype showed higher variability in clutch traits than the Fulani ecotype. The higher variability in the Tiv ecotype was related to the large population of single inter breeding flock which renders genetic drift insignificant. The small reproductive population often left when the Fulani women disposed large numbers of matured birds from their flock when preparing for new settlements thereby accelerating genetic drift. This had driven the population of the Fulani ecotype towards genetic uniformity in clutch traits by reducing genetic variation overtime. The genetic diversity of the Fulani ecotype in clutch traits that could be used for current and future adaptation is been threatened.

Crimson Publishers- CPG Methylation in G-Quadruplex and IMotif DNA StructuresCrimsonPublishers-SBB
Abberant hypomethylation in DNA regions with noncanonical folding potential (ncDNA motifs) is believed to predetermine tumor development - presumably, by facilitating G-quadruplex (G4) and/or i-motif (IM) formation via altering nucleosome positioning (stable G4s induce subsequent genomic rearrangements). We questioned whether CpG methylation per se affects the dsDNA-ncDNA equilibrium. Thermodynamic studies of genomic and model oligonucleotides with methylated CpG sites at different positions are reported. The genomic oligonucleotides analyzed in this work are DNA fragments with reportedly different methylation statuses in colorectal cancer and normal cells. Free energies of duplex, ncDNA formation from single strands were calculated based on melting curve analyses. Polyethylenglycole was used to imitate crowding effect. Our results suggest that CpG methylation may alter the energetic barrier for dsDNA-IM transitions.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions are frequently performed in the United States of America. The medial hamstrings graft has been shown to produce lower rates of osteoarthritis (OA) than the patellar tendon graft. The goal of this study was to determine how altering medial hamstring strength during surgery affects soft tissue loading, and hence the joint’s proclivity towards OA. Muscle-actuated forward dynamic simulations of running were performed for normal muscle strength and decreased medial hamstring strength. The results show weakening the medial hamstrings caused an overall decrease in total hamstrings force by 7%, in total quadriceps force by 35%, and in cartilage contact force by 6%. This decreased force may be protective against long-term OA.

We present a micro fluidic device that allows rapid and defined delivery of discrete and homogeneous reagents or samples to allow kinetic studies of surface-tethered biomolecules. We developed an Electro Osmotic Flow (EOF) based device consisting of an asymmetric Y-junction with an incorporated fast, pressure driven valve, two embedded measurement electrodes and reservoirs. The EOF is used to circumvent kinetic limitations on reagent transport to the surface of these tethered biomolecules due to the slow diffusion across parabolic concentration gradients in conventional pressure-driven flow devices. Using Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) as the pH sensitive surface-immobilized biomolecules, we show that the reagent solution can be repeatedly exchanged within milliseconds, and that by using a synchronized triggering scheme we can monitor the reaction of our sensor biomolecules to the change of the environment on a time scale of 10ms.
