Stargirl, A Microcosm of Societal Conformity Essay
Imagine a thirteen year old middle school girl, wearing Guess boots and an Abercrombie hood in
order to fit in. Visualize a thirty five year old man listening to the top forty radio stations and
watching American Idol, so he can have something to add to the discussion with his co workers
over coffee break. The various types of behaviours stated before are pertained to as conformity.
Conformity refers to the process by which an individual s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours are
influenced by other individuals. Except, how do these necessities manipulate a being? Social
psychologists have conducted an assortment of experiments and concluded that, through a range of
forms of social influence, groups can alter their members personality.... Show more content on

When this romance initially commences, Leo notices people treating him differently as if he is an
alien. This is because Stargirl is an extraordinarily typical girl who doesn t track the culture of the
school. She plays an ukulele, keeps a pet rat in her tote bag, treats everyone with kindness and
serenades them in the lunchroom on their birthdays. As a result Leo requests Stargirl to transform
her identity so she can fit into the school, and people won t look down upon them. He wants her to
conform into the society. She adjusts her name into Susan an ordinary high school girl. The reader
discovers in this progression that she is discontented pretending to be what she isn t. Ultimately,
she is happiest when she is factual to herself. As she articulates Every once in a while someone
comes along who is . . . a little more in touch with the stuff we re made of, it s our identity what

little truer to one self. Rather than following what others say and having no genuine identity, it is
vital to build up an own identity a way one can be referred to as.
Spinelli explicates in Stargirl, even the most influential people, who fire up the conformity don t
really have their own identity. This is because they are

The American black bear is can only be found in North America. Black bears have fairly short,

Reflection Of Cooperative Learning
An important skill for students to develop in school is collaboration. During this course, I learned
more in depth knowledge about students working with others within a concept called cooperative
learning. Cooperative learning is one of three goal structures associated with motivation. The three
structures are cooperative, competitive, and individualistic. Though all three are used to motivate
students to achieve goals, I believe cooperative is the most ideal goal structure for student
development. Cooperative learninginvolves putting student in groups for a lesson and requiring all
students to succeed in order for any one individual to earn rewards. This strategy enforces
individual accountability for each child to complete their share... Show more content on

As a future educator, I want my own students to have those same experiences that I have had and
cooperative learning is a perfect way to motivate the development of collaborative skills.
The fifth and final concept I found to be enlightening throughout the semester was the concept of
divergent thinking versus convergent thinking. Divergent thinking is a type of thinking, whose
goal is to come up with numerous unique and original ideas. One of the most common aspects of
divergent thinking is brainstorming. This is frequently used within school and many other
domains in order to come up with a large amount of ideas or topics at once. To contrast,
convergent thinking is a type of thinking that focuses on finding a specific answer. Convergent
thinking is used for situations where there is only one answer such as how many presidents there
have been or how many states there are in America. Divergent thinking is more often used for
open ended questions or to come up with completely new ideas. Divergent thinking is also a
method of thinking that enhances student creativity. When in the midst of divergent thinking, a
person is supposed to defer their judgment of ideas until later and create the most off the wall
ideas possible. I especially enjoyed learning about divergent and convergent thinking because I had
not realized there were various types of thinking. I had believed people could decide to be creative

Undesirable Living Conditions Among Glass-walled...
Vibrant and colourful, Hong Kong is a metropolis situated in the crossroads of Asia. The city
flourishes especially well at financial and service industries, and has a per capita GDP of
HK$285,146 (2012), according to official data. Being the world s 9th largest economy, Hong
Kong has a real GDP growth at 1.4% (2012) and is backed up by its 3.79 million labour force.
Undeniably, Hong Kong is one of the wealthiest cities in Asia. However, according to the
Transport and Housing Bureau, the average living space per head is 12.9 sq. metres in 2013,
much smaller than other Asian cities like Singapore (25 square metres per head). Many Hong
Kongers are living in cramped con ditions. This is mainly due to high property prices and

have sprang up all over the city. While these housing options are more likely to be in the price
range of low income families, they are not cheap at all. The rent of a 100 square feet subdivided
flat is often over HK$3000 in urban areas, and even that of a coffin room (typically at 20 square
feet) may be over HK$1000. Residing families are likely to spend more than half of their income
on rent, which limits their expenditures on food, transport and other spending to a bare
minimum. These forms of dwellings exploit the need for affordable housing of low income
families, and are often dangerous and unhygienic. In 2011, a fire in Fa Yuen Street, Mongkok
claimed nine lives and injured 34 people. People were injured and killed as they tried to find
their way out of a maze of subdivided flats and narrow hallways. More often than not, the
constructions of subdivided flats block stairwells and involve the construction of narrow hallways.
Fire safety codes may be violated, rendering residents highly vulnerable to fires and gas leakages
since they cannot escape quickly enough at the time of accidents. Structures of buildings may also
be damaged, which exposes the block to the threat of collapsing. Hygienic conditions are also
unacceptable. Unlike housing estates, these unauthorized forms of housings do not have regular
maintenance. Corridors are not cleaned, shared toilets can be connected to kitchens, and living
spaces may be infested with pests.

Analysis Of Mikhall Kalotozov s I Am Cuba Loose A Sense...
The protagonists in Mikhall Kalotozov s I am Cuba loose a sense of what of the meaning of life
but also mainly themselves. Throughout the film there is a rollercoaster of constant reoccurring
loss of innocence but once again is brought back since each character is started off as an innocent.
To be innocent means to be pure of heart and without guilt. An innocent person has not done any
wrong. It ties into the film because each of the three of the personas start off with the smile but is
soon stripped from them for whatever reason.
The cycle first starts off with the persona of Maria. In the beginning of the film she is shown
walking down the street casually talking to the fruit seller, also known as the fiancГ©, RenГ©. As
Maria is taking to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When she says she is scared, she is seen in a spaghetti strap black dress wearing a crucifix around
her neck. The black dress could be a reference to the fact that her innocence has died along with her
personality and identity. As Jim leaves he gives Maria money in exchange for her crucifix, now
she has not only lost the last piece of her personality and but the last ounce of innocence she had.
One reason that Maria would be scared is due to the fact that she has two personalities, one of
which is kept on the down low. The personality kept under locks is the one that is referred to as
Betty the club worker, possibly prostitute. The choice of the name Betty as Maria s stage name
probably wasn t at random. In the late 1920 s into the 1930 s Betty Boop was created to represent
flapper girls. Flappers were young girls who had yet to enter womanhood. They embraced their
free spirit and had many uncontrolled acts of fun with treating sex as something casual. After
Maria and Jim have sex and after she is caught by her fiancГ© she just lays there totally
emotionless. The emotionless face she give could be a sign of the fact the sex didn t mean anything.
Life sucks then gets better and then sucks again. The second protagonist is a farmer named Pedro.
Pedro is an old peasant who had it all but then lost completely everything and as soon as his life

Comparing Millet And Homer s Paintings
Both artworks Man with a Hoe 1860 1862, and The cotton pickers 1876 have subjects in the
people and occupations of everyday world. Millet and Homer s most of the works are related with
agriculture and life of poor and middle class people. The reason I choose these artworks because
they are related with occupations of everyday life. Also they are related with realism. Bad time
comes on everybody, and both artists have been involved in the controversy about their art works.
Jean François Milletwas accused of being a political trouble maker artist. His painting like Man
with a Hoe caused a controversy in the 1860s. The standing man s expressions in the picture were
translated as a communist protest. There was some negative reviews on some of the images in
Winslow Homers paintings were shown... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are some parts in the artworks that are related with each other. For example, there are bright
and hue colours in the artworks, and the artists used primary colours in them. There are no uses of
shadows in the cotton picker s artwork. The use of plants in the paintings makes them relates with
nature and free form style art. Millet man with a hoe was made with a pen and brushes. The
texture of these pieces is rough because the artists used hue colours. The use of colours in the
artworks affects the quality of the art because if Homer only used the dark black colour in the
cotton pickers, then viewer cannot recognize the cotton plant in the painting. Both are medium
style paintings made with oil on canvas. The culture is different in the paintings. The cotton picker
is related with American culture and the man with a hoe is related with French culture. The main
reason they are connected with each other because it shows the hard working images of peoples
inside them. It does not matter what culture they are belong to. They are made in late 1800s during
war time, and that is the reason they got involved in

What Is The Purpose Of The Book Of Acts
The book of Acts begins as Jesus ascended into Heaven. The Holy Spirit has manifested into the
hearts of the Twelve Apostles, therefore the word of God infinitely spread, and the number of
disciples had grown immensely in Jerusalem. More and more believed in Jesus. As the church
had grown problems had occurred between the Hellenistic Jews and the native Hebrews, Peter
the leader of The Twelve was confronted with a challenging situation. The Hellenistic Jews who
spoke Greek had tension with the Hebraic Jews who spoke Hebrew because they felt as if their
widows were neglected. During this time, the women did not have an education nor had to work
their husbands were the sole providers. Therefore, if their husbands had passed on they will not
have any source of living income or supplemental support. The needs of the Hellenistic Jews were

Holden Caulfield Innocence
Innocence may be preserved in a child indefinitely. However, influences from both family and
society impose standards of maturity on children which gradually strip the youthfulness away from
a child. Additionally, children may isolate themselves or face ostracization, which leads to the
degradation of a childs purity as he begins creating his own unique worldview apart of his
community. Parents are the closest influence on a developing child. Therefore, their mature actions
are bound to accumulate over the child, instigating his growth from childhoodinnocence. This is
especially true when parents perform their intense habits in front of their kids. This is outlined by
Theodore Roethke who recalls his father through a poem. He states how... Show more content on

This leads to a loss of innocence as the child begins maturing individually and creating their own
unique worldview. J.D. Salinger Highlights this in Catcher in the Rye through Holden Caulfield,
and then reveals the huge remorse which this character faces for isolating himself. Near the end
of the novel Salinger reveals that Holden sort of [misses] everybody [he] told about... (Salinger)
his life and with whom he interacted. This demonstrates that Holden did have some meaningful
connections in his life at one time, but eventually lost them because of his isolation, which
caused a large amount of regret and loss of his innocence. This is most evident as Holden states
that he even missed that... Maurice... who was a pimp that solicited Holden earlier in the book.
That scene, in which Holden hired a prostitute, was the penultimate indicator that Holden was
isolating himself. Even though he is a teenager, Holden traveled to a city alone to perform mature
tasks in order to prove that maturity to himself. These grown up activities ultimately lead to
Holden s dissatisfaction with adulthood. By the end of this novel, Holden is stuck reminiscing
about his past and yearning to go back his childhood. Because of his isolation and desire to be
mature, Holden essentially lost all of his innocence and fully transformed from a child to an adult.
Similarly many children lose their innocence as a result of their own changing views of the world.
Seamus Heaney outlines this in Blackberry Picking where he states that, each year [he] hoped [his
blackberries would] keep but knew they would not. (Heaney) This is an important reminder that
time is the ultimate thief of childhood. Despite a lack of outside influences, Heaney compares his
childhood to blackberries to convey that eventually, both would rot. In time, he knew that nothing
completely pure in his

The Challenges In Sports And The Socialization Of Sports...
In North America, sports are an important for socialization. The definition of socialization from
the book Sports in Society by Jay Coakley is a process of learning and social development, which
occurs as we interact with one another and become familiar with the social worlds. Sports is an
easy way for socializationbut it is also other thing that can do the same as sports. I believe that
sports is important for socialization from my own experience but it is not necessary for
everyone. Sports are essential in American Society. It s practically everywhere in people s lives.
If everyone was asked about what their favorite sport is, they could answer quickly. Sports is a
microcosm in the U.S. It makes up a big portion of American culture. Some people have been in
sports as a young kid by the parents so their kids can learn how to socialize. Kids learn how to be
normal with coaches, officials, parents, and other children. The question is, should we put our
kids in sports to socialize? I say yes, but the behavior of the child should be monitored. If the
child is not doing well, then he/she should be taken out and put in something else. From my
experience, I played football at the age of 7. I can t remember too many things about me
socializing too much. I feel like I was a loner with others but at home I was comfortable and
social. For children in Middle, I believe that sports or some form of extracurricular activity is
important for socialization. That is the age where

Likewise, Teddy also has very high status and power as he is the ruler of the Kingdom of Upalia.
He is Majesty King Theodore I, resplendent in the red and black of a generalissimo where he
lives in a winter place in Theodoresburg, capital of the Kingdom of Upalia (Nowlan 130). Like
Miss Strangeworth, Teddy takes his role very seriously. Not only does he use complex military
words such as generalissimo , he also takes awhile to make his decisions. While he is eating
dinner, Teddy contemplated his choice, pondering on the tactics that he needs to use in relieving
the siege of the fort by the river (Nowlan 131). Teddy weighs the pros and cons and thinks about
what might happen, If the Upalian army crossed the Tabelian marches, they might succeed in
encircling the Danovans. On the other hand, if they scaled the Theodoran mountains ... [sic]

power, both Miss Strangeworth and Teddy take their roles in the town very seriously.

value of voice in their own lives are unsimilar. Miss Strangeworth is highly respected in her life,

Persuasive Essay On Child Welfare
Imagine you and your siblings living in a house where your father is violent and your mother is
struggling to protect herself and her seven children. Imagine these people come to your house
and take you and your siblings away from your parents, split you up, and send you to different
houses, hours away from each other. Imagine later on finding out your mother is dead and your
father does not want to take you back. Imaging moving again, and again, and again. Imaging being
in abusive households, houses in areas so rural there is no internet, moving schools over and over
again. Imaging going to five different primary schools. Imagine being a teenager and not being
able to tell anyone, lying about the number of siblings you have, lying through your teeth day after
day because you cannot pick up the courage to tell anyone. Imagine if this was you.
When I say the words poor child welfare you may think of the children who are living in poverty
or the children who are employed in child labour, or children who live in the middle of war zones.
What you might not think of is the children struggling right beneath our noses the homeless
children, children in foster care, or children in abusive households. There are several reasons why I
have chosen to focus on children, rather than all 7.5 billion people globally. This is because
children keep the human race going, and children should not go through what some do.

The Game By Teresa Toten
The Game is a novel written by Teresa Toten in 2001. The novel examines the affect of abuse
and the feeling of inadequacy on a young person and how they cope with it, in this case the young
girl develops a fantasy world in which she battles the evil with her sister. It also shows how a
person s mind tries to protect them from the realization of events that have happened that at the
time they may not be able to cope with. The gamewas invented by two young sisters, Danielleand
Kelly. Danielle is the older sister that suffers from a tumultuous relationship with her Father
which includes physical and emotional abuse. Dani takes a lot of blame for things that her
sister does wrong, to protect her. She wants to be loved and respected by her Father, just like her
sister is and you find that she has memorialized one memory where her Father was actually proud
of her. There is also the realization that there are many more memories of when he was
disappointed and angry at her. Bearing in mind that she is also taking responsibility for her
sisters mistakes you can imagine a childhood filled with misery and fear and the need for respect
and love. Dani initially invents a game with her sister representing good versus evil and as you

The Holderness Coastline Essay examples
The Holderness Coastline
The infamous Holderness Coastline is located on the East coast of Yorkshire, stretching from
Flamborough Head to Spurn Point. In the last 2000 years the coastline has retreated by almost
400m and since Roman times over 28 villages have disappeared into the sea between Bridlington
and Spurn Head. About a million years ago the Yorkshire coastline was a line of chalk cliffs almost
32km west of where it now is. During the Ice Age deposits of soft boulder clay were built up
against these cliffs to form the new coastline. It is this soft sand and clay which is easily eroded
by the action of waves, as the ocean slowly claims back the region it used to occupy.

This is evident at both Great Cowden and Easington.
The Holderness Coastline is also extremely exposed with little protection. The original coastline
before the ice age consisted mainly of chalk, and is still present today at Flamborough Head where
a headland has formed as chalk is much more resistant to coastal erosion than the boulder clay.
This outcrop of land provides some shelter, although it is minimal, as the stretch of coastline down
to Spurn Head is over 50km long, most experiencing almost head on dominant waves. The
coastline is also exposed to strong North/North East winds, which co enside with a rather generous
fetch. Destructive waves are a result, which erode the beaches and attack the foot of the cliffs,
removing masses of clay in suspension, resulting in strong marine erosion.
The material eroded and transported elsewhere results in little material left to form beaches, which
act as a barrier to protect the cliff line from tides, currents and storms, therefore the sea s processed
are able to keep cutting back the cliff line.
The weather also has a large influence. Often there are winter storm surges producing higher waves,
and higher sea levels, meaning higher energy erosion. In addition is increased sub aerial denudation
brought about by the heavy rain and strong winds. This often leads to increased slumping and

Otto Von Bismarck formed of designed the European balance of power. The power was known as

the fact that Puerto Rico has never had political sovereignty since 1898. Instead the U.S.

two aspects of Puerto Rican politics that make up the political crisis. The first aspect is the fact that
Puerto Ricohas never secured political autonomy or sovereignty to govern itself under the U.S.. The
second aspect is that Puerto Rican voters have never been able to unify their support under one

The Identity Of A New Zealand Essay
Maori identity in New Zealand has been aspersed negatively by mainstream media (Nairn et al.,
2012., p. 39) and has created a despicable and contempt perception of their ethnicity. This will be
my main focus, by referring to the ideas of Arjun Appadurai s media and ideoscapes as a way of
Maori being portrayed as menances to society because of the focus on the assumption that Maori
are taking advantage of the system or are criminals, as can be seen in The New ZealandHerald,
Police Ten 7 (a popular New Zealand program) and some of the latest statistics from the
Department of Corrections and Quick Stats. I will attempt to justify my point of how Maori can
be considered a diasporic community in New Zealand, based on the ideas of Clifford (1994) and
Safran (1991) who explore the world of the forever changing definition of diaspora.
My argument: That the ideas of Arjun Appadurais media and ideoscapes best explain how the
identity of diasporic Maori has been created in New Zealand.
What can we call identity? Identity has been linked to self or many selves to serve the society
one is in (James, 1980, p. 294), but one theory I quite liked, was the idea that self and society help
to shape one another by societal influence on one self and the outcomes of society by ones actions
in response to the influence (Ashmore, Lee, 1997, p. 191). Personally this idea resonated well with
me in the attempt to define identity for Maori because it explains two things:

committed by a mystery beast . Poe demonstrates the primitive violent forces that exist within
people, particularly men, which have the ability to escape in shocking ways, often against a

throwing down and breaking the furniture as it moved, and dragging the bed from the bedstead.
Then, the Ourang Outang realizes his faults and tries to conceal then, as would any man,

as it was found; then that of the old lady, which it immediately hurled through the window

How Does Jem Mature In To Kill A Mockingbird
Before coming into the world, butterflies are secured in their safe cocoon, forced to be exposed to
the life that surrounds them. They start off as caterpillars, not aware of the horrors of the world that
are awaiting them when they make that final transformation. The butterfly s cocoon is the last
barrier and once it s shattered, the butterflyimmediately starts making decisions and modifications
based on this newfound society. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, this process is revealed
in the children of Maycomb, Jem, Scout, and Dill, when they discover the unjust ways of their
society. Overall, Lee successfully demonstrates how children lose innocence and start to grow up
because of influences coming from their environment.

the situation of the trial. His anger is perceived when he punched his pillow as he attempts to

Native American Religion Chapter 3 Summary
In Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, the book highlights some interesting parts about indigenous religions of
North America and Africa. For starters, in the indigenous religions, they have some interesting
beliefs about how the world was created. Many of the beliefs they hold about the origin of the
creation of man, is from ancient myths of North America. The belief that North America is the
motherland for all creation. However, each native religionhas different t how they describe their
superman being. Another interesting aspect about the indigenous religions of the native American
was the tale about how the coyote became a dirt color. At first, the coyote was green and was
envious of the bluebird which was a beautiful blue. The coyote eventually asked the bluebird how it
got its color and eventually, the coyote became... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

When the coyote got up, its color changed from the beautiful blue to a dirt color. I found this tale
interesting because it shows the danger of arrogance and some of the moral teachings of
humbleness in indigenous native American religions. I believe that religions that have tales about
how their moral and ethical teaching came about are interesting because I can trace the source of
how it came about. Chapter 3 described the indigenous religions of Africa and the myths,
supernatural being s history, and the incorporation of Islam and Christianity into the different
indigenous religions. I found it interesting that many of the indigenous religions keep the tradition
from their culture into Islam and Christianity. In Islam for instance, it has spread through North
Africa and in West Africa where many of its followers retain beliefs about possession by spirits

Monet Vs Gogh
Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh were two prominent, influential painters that contributed and
shaped their respective artistic periods: Impressionism and Post Impressionism.
Both of these styles share similar characteristics and have a focal point around color, but they speak
to the viewer in different ways. They are both focusing on life and nature, but van Gogh speaks to
egregious issues about life, whereas Monet is capturing the existing moment of nature. To analyze
The Windmill on the Onbekende Gracht and The Rocks, we need a clear understanding about their
styles, and after studying these styles, we can conclude that these two works both share qualities of
each other, but reveal two different truths. Even though they share the subject ... Show more content

The brush strokes create a sense of motion in his work, and with the usage of his rocks, create a
story that he is trying to communicate to us. This story begins in the bottom left corner of the
painting. Van Gogh uses brush strokes to draw our attention to this point and then carries us to
the following rocks through his usage of a zig sag diagonal. He is taking us through life in this
picture, communicating that you will go through ups and downs in your life. This statement can
be seen in the second diagonal. We see a thick patch of grass symbolizing a tough time in life s
path, and similarly again at the bottom of the tree. Van Gogh is communicating that you will not
always have a clear road to success, but that if you follow the path, you will eventually become
success or reach your set goal in life. At least this is what I want to think, but Van Gogh was
probably more cynical in his approach, and is probably delivering the message that people will
reach their longed, craved evil action right before their death or last moment.
Van Gogh communicates this to us through his usage of the sky. Notice in the painting that there
is only a hint of blue. He is revealing either that there is nothing worthwhile once you have come
to the end of your path or that only a few people actually live a morally right life and do not
commit their craved sin. Unfortunately, no one will ever know the answer to what van Gogh

How Does Suess Use Irony In The Cold War
While no one would think to compare children s books to the Cold War, Dr. Seuss did just that.
Suess has wrote many children s book including The Butter Battle Book, Green Eggs and Ham,
and The Lorax. Suess seems to have mastered the art of using an array of different craft in his
books. Metaphors, irony, and parallel structure are all conveyed to make the book interesting and
catch the reader s attention. Suess is excellent at using creative words such as walloping whizz
zinger, utterly sputter, and finally yooks and zooks to describe two different people to show the real
meaning behind the story. Seuss writing may seem innocent to the eye, but behind the text there s
actually a cold meaning. Craft of all different types is shown throughout The Butter Battle Book.
Metaphors being the most revalent. To show a simple idea of the Cold War, The Butter Battle
Book is able to illustrate how the war happened over silly reasonings without actually saying it.

The Dream Act Research Paper
Undocumented Americans and the DREAM Act What would it be like to be branded as illegal and
be denied the chance of a bright future? Millions of children are brought to the United States
illegally without much choice. Although some grow up to become active members of society, the
future of immigrant youth is handicapped by immigrationlaws, which make them face the
hardships of not being able to go to college, drive or get jobs, and live with the constant fear of
deportation. The Dream Act is a bill that would complete the dreams for countless young
undocumented students and individuals by the means of legal documentation. The U.S Congress

The reality that immigration policies and registration requirements create for undocumented
students is a grim one; despite their scholarly capability, thousands upon thousands of
undocumented students who have completed high school do not continue on with their
education because of the lack of legal paperwork (DREAM Act). This has been the story line for
countless undocumented valedictorians, like Grecia Cantu, who s dream of going to Baylor
University to become a teacher was plucked by a simple mandate of Congress (Smith). Despite
having a presidential scholarship to Baylor University, Grecia s future is hampered by her illegal
status in the country and the inactivity of the DREAM Act in congress, which is due largely to its
brisk opponents. Critics of the legislation falsely advocate that it grants preferential treatment to
undocumented students (Malkin 1). In reality, the DREAM Act only grants qualifying individuals
with a temporary residency, a driver s license, and a work permit (Giving the Fact). This allows the
students who meet the criteria the same tuition rates as natural born citizens and a legal way to
work and drive in the country. Another resounding critic among the opponents of the bill includes
the common misconception that the DREAM Act will provide amnesty and forgive the federal
offense immigrants committed when they entered the country illegally (Smith). In truth, only
immigrants who entered the country during their youth, before age 16, are eligible for the
benefits of the legislation. Once they apply, they will have to fulfill the requirements of
completing a 2 year college or serve a 2 year term in the armed forces to finally receive resident
status, not citizenship, after 6 years of proved residency (Creating Opportunities). If Congress

The Biblical Mandate For Music
Premise 1. Music performs an important and independent role within the Biblical narrative.
From beginning to end the Bible is full of music and song. The first musician, Jubal, makes his
appearance as early as Genesis 4... As we turn the pages, we find many who follow in Jubel s
musical footsteps (Roberts, 2002:84)
This premise is predicated on the hypothesis that music plays an independent and important role
within scripture itself; that is to be an elevated carrier for liturgy and prayer, the use of which is
mandated by God for corporate worship. Both corporate worship and individual faith would suffer
if music were removed. As an act of worshipping obedience, and a way of more readily

15:16 22) (Miller, 1993:78 81).
The instruction to make music in worship moves beyond the Levites alone (Foley, 1992) and
stretches into the whole body of Israel. Frame (1996:111) says Scripture plainly teaches that God
s people are not only to speak, but also to sing, the truth of God (eg. 1 Chron. 16:9; Ps. 33:2 3;
Col. 3:16). This last verse demonstrates how the mandate for music has carried on through to the
New Covenant people of God.
Synagogue worship heavily influenced emerging Christian music (Foley, 1992:35, 50) as seen
throughout the New Testament (Martin, 1967:17). We could add Eph. 15:9 (White, 1993, 1996),
and Heb. 2:12 where Jesus quotes Ps. 22:22, applying it to the early church.
This also challenges the presupposition behind the question, that music was not historically seen as
essential. In the New Testament era of Church history, the Levitical Jewish traditions of music and
hymn singing in corporate worship continued and relied heavily on this Old Testamentbasis
(Guiver, 2009:14). You can identify potential candidates for hymns in Phil. 2:6 11 ; Col. 1:15 20;
Eph. 5:14, and possibly 1 Cor. 13 (White, 1993:37), and find designated hymns in Luke s gospel (of
Elizabeth, 1:42 45; Mary, 1:46 55; Zechariah, 1:68 79; and Simeon, 2:29 32). All of these combine
the language of Jewish history and personal experience of the singer (White, 1993:37).
Jesus also engages with corporate singing with His

Essay On 19th Century American Entertainment
During the 19th century, American had long working hours and have awful working condition
because of the American Industrialization. In order to relieve their stress, entertainments were
necessary. There were many forms of entertainment that were performed throughout America s
history. Two of the popular entertainment at that time were minstrel show and freak show. Minstrel
show was also known as the blackface, which was a theatrical show that was mainly performed by
white peoplewith blackface makeup on. Another popular entertainment was the freak show. It was
an exhibition of human with unusual body part. Some of them looked different because they were

The minstrel show was a musical stage show performed by mostly whites. The performers
blackened their faces and perform music, comic skit and dancing. Jim Crow was one of the
popular character which represent a stereotype career slave. He was originated from a popular
song called jump jim crow. Another character was Zip Coon, who represent the free blacks. The
black face shows used these characters to make fun of blacks and provoke laughter. Since the show

Red Lobster s Ethical Dilemma Term Paper
Gerry Mullen, CEO of Red Lobster restaurants, has been faced with a dilemma. He recently

young working men are being killed and maimed to make lobsters available at cheap process to
consumers in the United States. The men, known as buzos, must dive up to 130 feet for lobster, and
face dangerous decompression sickness which begins with paralysis and ends in a slow death.

Another disadvantage of implementing this option would be that net earnings would decrease
due to a decrease in consumers, and shareholders will be angered by the decreasing figures of the

bad light would be shown on the CEO and the company, especially since Gerry is relatively new.
Since there are clearly more disadvantages than advantages for Gerry and Red Lobster by
exercising this option, I would advise Gerry to further pursue other options. Another option with
which Gerry could investigate would be for Red Lobster to offer to pay a higher price for
lobster to boat companies in the Mosquito Coast in order for the divers to receive a higher salary
cut. A possible advantage to this is that it would provide a better living environment for the
divers. It is stated in the article that after the sacabuzos (middlemen), boat captains, and fish
processors take their share of the money, what remains for the buzos is a mere $2 per pound of
lobster fetched. Within a two week time period, this rate will amount to about $300. If the divers
are trying to support families, $300 for two weeks is quite meager. By increasing the price that
Red Lobster is willing to pay for wholesale lobster, the divers will benefit considerably due to a
higher salary. Another advantage to a higher salary would mean that more individuals would be
inclined to become divers,

Capitalism Vs Religion
Exam #3
Capitalism thrives in the United States in a manner different than anywhere else in the world. As
time passed, it became apparent that spending and creating secured the power it currently
possesses. While this country appears to be secular in the way it is regulated, it in actuality owes
its economic success to religion. Reality is, the notion of capitalism and the American work ethic is
owed to Protestants, despite the secular worldview Americans have held in more recent times.
Weber argues that the Protestant work ethicprovided a foundation for the success of capitalism in
the secular sphere of collective society. The calling derived such practicality in terms of economics
through its individualistic approach to eternal salvation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Worshippers of the faith were now more inclined to save and invest wisely in all their economic
endeavors. Because of the practicality implemented in their faith, the Protestants became
committed to practicing smarter tactics to obtain a place in Heaven. The role that these ideas
played in the formation of their economic success, was integral to not only their success, but the
rise of capitalism in the United States. The ideas that were derived from this faith soon became
the spirit of capitalism. This spirit was easily applicable to capitalism, and the practices and
methods the Protestants developed soon became more commonplace within collective society.
The ascetic practices that were being implemented in the United States were now integral to
credit and value, which is a core belief of Protestantism. However, despite the success that the
United States now possessed due to the rise of capitalism in their society, they reached a level of
idleness in their spirit. By complying to economic modesty, the average American worker was
now trapped in an iron cage . This iron cage refers to the over rationalization of the United States
with their money. By becoming conscious of their actions and aware of the result that followed,
the workers spirit died a little. The calling soon enough became an illusion that existed long ago in
a different society, but is now

Central Limit Theorem And The Distribution Of The Number...
Central Limit Theorem Abraham De Moivre, a French mathematician, published an article 1733,
which he used the normal distribution to approximate the distribution of the number of heads
resulting from many tosses of a coin. His work was nearly forgotten until another French
mathematician can along who name was Pierre Simon Laplace. Laplace explained De Moivre s
findings by approximating the binomial distribution with normal distribution. In 1785 Laplace
introduced the characteristic functions which were the sum of error distribution, which took the
value of 1 and +1 with equal probabilities. This work helped Laplace with the concept of the CLT,
which he wrote a paper on in 1810. Sime`on Denis Poisson tried to provide an exact mathematical
analysis to Laplace theorem. Poisson provided proof of the CLT for identically distributed
variables. At the end of the 19th century mathematician was changing their train of thoughts from
computational to fundamental ( pure math) mathematic. Dirichlet and Bessel followed in the
footsteps of Laplace and Poisson. They introduced the discontinuity factors , which proved Poisson
s equation for an arbitrary value of n. Cauchy s was the first mathematician to consider probability
theoryas pure mathematics. He found an upper bond to the difference between the exact value and
the approximation and then specified conditions for those bound to tend to zero. The problem with
his theorem was that it was not proven for distributions with

Loss Of Innocence In The Outsiders
The Outsiders by S.E Hinton was written in the 1960 s, a time of rebels and outlaws. The novel

but feel no emotion; they are cool to the point of not feeling anymore while the Greasers are in
poverty and are often shunned by society, but they have a passion for life, the exact opposite of the
Socs. The story also discusses the loss of innocence in the main character, Ponyboy Curtis, a young

Impact Of Social Media On Self-Presentation
Social Media has a massive impact on a person s self presentation because of the different trends
where everyone wants to fit in with society s expectations of what we should look like.
Celebrities are made to be our role models, however, magazines photoshop and make them more
toned and a lot slimmer, which makes young people want to make their bodies more like theirs.
This then leads to the modern generation becoming self conscious because they feel they have to fit
in and achieve an ideal self that fits in with those around them.
Erving Goffman sees self presentation in six aspects, which are all related to the idea of life as a
drama; persona, performance, staging, teams, role, personal style. According to Goffman, a
persona is when someone wears various personality masks depending on which roles they are
undertaking, for example, when someone is with their friends the mask they wear defines them
as a kind, friendly person whereas when they are with the family the mask will come off and their
personality will change. I wear a mask when I m with my friends and this portrays me as a
friendly, outgoing character, whereas the mask I wear at home is loud, moody and unproductive.
Alongside Goffman s idea of the masks , he also mentions staging. He suggests that our self
presentation is constructed and controlled, and it shows the way we set out our self presentation,
this includes; the costume we wear, the physical locations and the props we might use. When I m at

The United States Antitrust Laws
INTRODUCTION Through the course of this paper I will introduce and discuss the history of the
movement towards an actively and engaged antitrust legislation. I will also identify the original and
early antitrust laws and how they have influenced the economy, as we know it today. Upon the
completion of this paper you will understand who was set to benefit (gain) from anti legislation and
who loses under the intentions of the antitrust laws today and in the past.
LITERATURE REVIEW The United States antitrust legislation is a legislation designed to break up
and prevent the formation of new monopolies to increase competition and societal welfare. Thus the
United State Antitrust law is a collection of both state and federal government laws enacted to
promote fair competition in the economy. The antitrust laws main statutes consist of the Sherman
Act of 1890, the Clayton Act of 1914 and the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914. In
combination these acts have enforced the proper rules and regulations that businesses must conform
to today to ensure that there is a healthy competition within the economy to not only the benefit of
the consumers who utilize these services and goods but for the health of the businesses who make
up our market industries. While Rockefeller s Standard Oil is a well known example of an early
monopoly a few other examples of early monopolistic companies are known as The Whisky Trust,

Chemical Reactions And Factors That Affect The Rate Of A...
Reactions occur everywhere, and they may take decades, such as fossils, or only seconds, such as
lighting a match to occur. Chemical kinetics concerns the rates of chemical reactions and what
factors affects these rates (Iodine Clock, 2017). Temperature, concentration, pressure of reacting
gases, surface area of reacting solids and the use of catalysts are all factors which affect the rate of
a reaction (Bbc.co.uk, 2017). This is because they affect the reaction roles and yields of activation
energy, product management and reactant management (William, 2017). This is accomplished by
making changes to the concentration, pressure or temperature of a reaction to alter the position of
the equilibrium (Bbc.co.uk, 2017).
Accordingly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was further identified that typically for every 10oC temperature rise, the reaction rate would
double (Del Mundo et al., 2016) (Clark, 2017).
Throughout the Landolt Iodine Clock Reaction, chemical equilibria are clearly demonstrated
through the delayed colour change of combining two colourless solutions to form a dark blue
solution. The overall chemical reaction for this is as follows:
2IO 3(aq) + 5HSO 3(aq) + 2H (aq) в†’ I2 + 5HSO 4(aq) + H20(l)
Iodate ions + Bisulfite ions + hydronium ions в†’ Iodine + Bisulfate + water (Iodine Clock, 2017)
The individual steps of the reaction are:
(1) IO3 (aq) + 3HSO3 (aq) в†’ I (aq) + 3SO4 (aq) + 3H+(aq)
Iodate + Bisulfite в†’ Iodide + Sulfate + Hydronium ions

Jeremy! Good morning sweet cakes. Send me a SIGN! Why? Just because. I passed a Mac

to living in ATL, except for buying my own condo/house my goal was by the end of next october
(live in shit on solace for 2 years without a car and hopefully save up enough for a
downpayment). You probably already know all of this. The point being I don t want to go
without you. We both know if I go I ll think about what it what it d be like with you there and
how much I would love it. I m sure you are a billionaire so we could potentially get our ownnnn
spot where they are staying and even make Barbara tag along with us and MASON! Along with
anyone else you want. TELL ME HOW AMAZING THAT WOULD BE? exactly... phenomenal. I

Mel Gibson s Soliloquy Comparison
To be, or not to be is one of the greatest soliloquy William Shakespeare has ever wrote; and there s
many ways it was rehearsed. I watched 3 versions of this soliloquy, Kenneth Branagh s version,
Ethan Hawke s version and, Mel Gibson s version. They were all very different from each other and
unique in their own ways. I believe that Mel Gibson s performance of To be, or not to be was the
most effective and I will explain why.
Starting with Kenneth Branagh s version, his version was simple and straight to the point.
Branagh s version was less self reflective and more like he is talking to his hidden audience
(Claudius and Polonius). There wasn t much emotion to his soliloquy and it sounded much
rehearsed instead of laid back. But he does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this version, they tried to make it a more medieval vibe. Gibson is dressed almost like a knight
Gibson is alone in a tomb reflecting on his thoughts. The tomb has low lighting, it s dark and he
is alone in that tomb. It was also very quiet. His voice echoes in the whole tomb so there was no
music needed because his voice is dramatic enough. In the tomb, there are a lot of bones and
crypt, and that can symbolize death later on in the play. In his soliloquy, it was at a flat (eye
level) angle with multiple camera shots. First, it was a long shot to show the audience where
Gibson was. Then, it was mostly close up shots but still shows Gibson pacing around the tomb.
That makes the audience know get a sense of his facial expressions. They also track him
sometimes when Gibson s walking around the tomb but usually lets the camera stay in one
place to show his whole body. While filming this, there was many short breaks to show the bones
and crypt as Gibson is talking to them they were cuts. Also at the end of his soliloquy, it went
faded into the next scene. This is my favorite out of all 3 because Gibson seems really consumed
with the soliloquy, you can see that because he pauses in between his lines and at the end, he puts
his end down in sorrow. I also like this version because they decided to film it in a tomb and
surround him by death, which means he is really is contemplating whether it s worth living or

  • 2. Stargirl, A Microcosm of Societal Conformity Essay Imagine a thirteen year old middle school girl, wearing Guess boots and an Abercrombie hood in order to fit in. Visualize a thirty five year old man listening to the top forty radio stations and watching American Idol, so he can have something to add to the discussion with his co workers over coffee break. The various types of behaviours stated before are pertained to as conformity. Conformity refers to the process by which an individual s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours are influenced by other individuals. Except, how do these necessities manipulate a being? Social psychologists have conducted an assortment of experiments and concluded that, through a range of forms of social influence, groups can alter their members personality.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When this romance initially commences, Leo notices people treating him differently as if he is an alien. This is because Stargirl is an extraordinarily typical girl who doesn t track the culture of the school. She plays an ukulele, keeps a pet rat in her tote bag, treats everyone with kindness and serenades them in the lunchroom on their birthdays. As a result Leo requests Stargirl to transform her identity so she can fit into the school, and people won t look down upon them. He wants her to conform into the society. She adjusts her name into Susan an ordinary high school girl. The reader discovers in this progression that she is discontented pretending to be what she isn t. Ultimately, she is happiest when she is factual to herself. As she articulates Every once in a while someone comes along who is . . . a little more in touch with the stuff we re made of, it s our identity what really perceives who I am rather than assimilating I rather enjoy myself as who I really am. (Spinelli, Stargirl 177). This advocates that perhaps one can take a message from her and be a little truer to one self. Rather than following what others say and having no genuine identity, it is vital to build up an own identity a way one can be referred to as. Spinelli explicates in Stargirl, even the most influential people, who fire up the conformity don t really have their own identity. This is because they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Reflection Of Cooperative Learning An important skill for students to develop in school is collaboration. During this course, I learned more in depth knowledge about students working with others within a concept called cooperative learning. Cooperative learning is one of three goal structures associated with motivation. The three structures are cooperative, competitive, and individualistic. Though all three are used to motivate students to achieve goals, I believe cooperative is the most ideal goal structure for student development. Cooperative learninginvolves putting student in groups for a lesson and requiring all students to succeed in order for any one individual to earn rewards. This strategy enforces individual accountability for each child to complete their share... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a future educator, I want my own students to have those same experiences that I have had and cooperative learning is a perfect way to motivate the development of collaborative skills. The fifth and final concept I found to be enlightening throughout the semester was the concept of divergent thinking versus convergent thinking. Divergent thinking is a type of thinking, whose goal is to come up with numerous unique and original ideas. One of the most common aspects of divergent thinking is brainstorming. This is frequently used within school and many other domains in order to come up with a large amount of ideas or topics at once. To contrast, convergent thinking is a type of thinking that focuses on finding a specific answer. Convergent thinking is used for situations where there is only one answer such as how many presidents there have been or how many states there are in America. Divergent thinking is more often used for open ended questions or to come up with completely new ideas. Divergent thinking is also a method of thinking that enhances student creativity. When in the midst of divergent thinking, a person is supposed to defer their judgment of ideas until later and create the most off the wall ideas possible. I especially enjoyed learning about divergent and convergent thinking because I had not realized there were various types of thinking. I had believed people could decide to be creative ... The city flourishes especially well at financial and service industries, and has a per capita GDP of HK$285,146 (2012), according to official data. Being the world s 9th largest economy, Hong Kong has a real GDP growth at 1.4% (2012) and is backed up by its 3.79 million labour force. Undeniably, Hong Kong is one of the wealthiest cities in Asia. However, according to the Transport and Housing Bureau, the average living space per head is 12.9 sq. metres in 2013, much smaller than other Asian cities like Singapore (25 square metres per head). While these housing options are more likely to be in the price range of low income families, they are not cheap at all. The rent of a 100 square feet subdivided flat is often over HK$3000 in urban areas, and even that of a coffin room (typically at 20 square feet) may be over HK$1000. Residing families are likely to spend more than half of their income on rent, which limits their expenditures on food, transport and other spending to a bare minimum. These forms of dwellings exploit the need for affordable housing of low income families, and are often dangerous and unhygienic. In 2011, a fire in Fa Yuen Street, Mongkok claimed nine lives and injured 34 people. People were injured and killed as they tried to find their way out of a maze of subdivided flats and narrow hallways. More often than not, the constructions of subdivided flats block stairwells and involve the construction of narrow hallways. Fire safety codes may be violated, rendering residents highly vulnerable to fires and gas leakages since they cannot escape quickly enough at the time of accidents. Structures of buildings may also be damaged, which exposes the block to the threat of collapsing. Hygienic conditions are also unacceptable. Unlike housing estates, these unauthorized forms of housings do not have regular maintenance. • 6. Analysis Of Mikhall Kalotozov s I Am Cuba Loose A Sense... The protagonists in Mikhall Kalotozov s I am Cuba loose a sense of what of the meaning of life but also mainly themselves. Throughout the film there is a rollercoaster of constant reoccurring loss of innocence but once again is brought back since each character is started off as an innocent. To be innocent means to be pure of heart and without guilt. An innocent person has not done any wrong. It ties into the film because each of the three of the personas start off with the smile but is soon stripped from them for whatever reason. The cycle first starts off with the persona of Maria. In the beginning of the film she is shown walking down the street casually talking to the fruit seller, also known as the fiancГ©, RenГ©. As Maria is taking to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When she says she is scared, she is seen in a spaghetti strap black dress wearing a crucifix around her neck. The black dress could be a reference to the fact that her innocence has died along with her personality and identity. As Jim leaves he gives Maria money in exchange for her crucifix, now she has not only lost the last piece of her personality and but the last ounce of innocence she had. One reason that Maria would be scared is due to the fact that she has two personalities, one of which is kept on the down low. The personality kept under locks is the one that is referred to as Betty the club worker, possibly prostitute. The choice of the name Betty as Maria s stage name probably wasn t at random. In the late 1920 s into the 1930 s Betty Boop was created to represent flapper girls. Flappers were young girls who had yet to enter womanhood. They embraced their free spirit and had many uncontrolled acts of fun with treating sex as something casual. After Maria and Jim have sex and after she is caught by her fiancГ© she just lays there totally emotionless. The emotionless face she give could be a sign of the fact the sex didn t mean anything. • 7. Comparing Millet And Homer s Paintings Both artworks Man with a Hoe 1860 1862, and The cotton pickers 1876 have subjects in the people and occupations of everyday world. Millet and Homer s most of the works are related with agriculture and life of poor and middle class people. The reason I choose these artworks because they are related with occupations of everyday life. Also they are related with realism. Bad time comes on everybody, and both artists have been involved in the controversy about their art works. Jean FranГ§ois Milletwas accused of being a political trouble maker artist. His painting like Man with a Hoe caused a controversy in the 1860s. The standing man s expressions in the picture were translated as a communist protest. There are some parts in the artworks that are related with each other. For example, there are bright and hue colours in the artworks, and the artists used primary colours in them. There are no uses of shadows in the cotton picker s artwork. The use of plants in the paintings makes them relates with nature and free form style art. Millet man with a hoe was made with a pen and brushes. The texture of these pieces is rough because the artists used hue colours. The use of colours in the artworks affects the quality of the art because if Homer only used the dark black colour in the cotton pickers, then viewer cannot recognize the cotton plant in the painting. Both are medium style paintings made with oil on canvas. The culture is different in the paintings. The cotton picker is related with American culture and the man with a hoe is related with French culture. The main reason they are connected with each other because it shows the hard working images of peoples inside them. It does not matter what culture they are belong to. However, influences from both family and society impose standards of maturity on children which gradually strip the youthfulness away from a child. Additionally, children may isolate themselves or face ostracization, which leads to the degradation of a childs purity as he begins creating his own unique worldview apart of his community. Parents are the closest influence on a developing child. Therefore, their mature actions are bound to accumulate over the child, instigating his growth from childhoodinnocence. This is especially true when parents perform their intense habits in front of their kids. This is outlined by Theodore Roethke who recalls his father through a poem. He states how... Near the end of the novel Salinger reveals that Holden sort of [misses] everybody [he] told about... (Salinger) his life and with whom he interacted. This demonstrates that Holden did have some meaningful connections in his life at one time, but eventually lost them because of his isolation, which caused a large amount of regret and loss of his innocence. This is most evident as Holden states that he even missed that... Maurice... who was a pimp that solicited Holden earlier in the book. That scene, in which Holden hired a prostitute, was the penultimate indicator that Holden was isolating himself. Even though he is a teenager, Holden traveled to a city alone to perform mature tasks in order to prove that maturity to himself. These grown up activities ultimately lead to Holden s dissatisfaction with adulthood. By the end of this novel, Holden is stuck reminiscing about his past and yearning to go back his childhood. Because of his isolation and desire to be mature, Holden essentially lost all of his innocence and fully transformed from a child to an adult. Similarly many children lose their innocence as a result of their own changing views of the world. Seamus Heaney outlines this in Blackberry Picking where he states that, each year [he] hoped [his blackberries would] keep but knew they would not. The definition of socialization from the book Sports in Society by Jay Coakley is a process of learning and social development, which occurs as we interact with one another and become familiar with the social worlds. Sports is an easy way for socializationbut it is also other thing that can do the same as sports. I believe that sports is important for socialization from my own experience but it is not necessary for everyone. Sports are essential in American Society. It s practically everywhere in people s lives. If everyone was asked about what their favorite sport is, they could answer quickly. Sports is a microcosm in the U.S. It makes up a big portion of American culture. Some people have been in sports as a young kid by the parents so their kids can learn how to socialize. Kids learn how to be normal with coaches, officials, parents, and other children. The question is, should we put our kids in sports to socialize? I say yes, but the behavior of the child should be monitored. If the child is not doing well, then he/she should be taken out and put in something else. From my experience, I played football at the age of 7. I can t remember too many things about me socializing too much. I feel like I was a loner with others but at home I was comfortable and social. In the last 2000 years the coastline has retreated by almost 400m and since Roman times over 28 villages have disappeared into the sea between Bridlington and Spurn Head. About a million years ago the Yorkshire coastline was a line of chalk cliffs almost 32km west of where it now is. The original coastline before the ice age consisted mainly of chalk, and is still present today at Flamborough Head where a headland has formed as chalk is much more resistant to coastal erosion than the boulder clay. This outcrop of land provides some shelter, although it is minimal, as the stretch of coastline down to Spurn Head is over 50km long, most experiencing almost head on dominant waves. The coastline is also exposed to strong North/North East winds, which co enside with a rather generous fetch. Destructive waves are a result, which erode the beaches and attack the foot of the cliffs, removing masses of clay in suspension, resulting in strong marine erosion. The material eroded and transported elsewhere results in little material left to form beaches, which act as a barrier to protect the cliff line from tides, currents and storms, therefore the sea s processed are able to keep cutting back the cliff line. The weather also has a large influence. Often there are winter storm surges producing higher waves, and higher sea levels, meaning higher energy erosion. The Identity Of A New Zealand Essay Maori identity in New Zealand has been aspersed negatively by mainstream media (Nairn et al., 2012., p. 39) and has created a despicable and contempt perception of their ethnicity. This will be my main focus, by referring to the ideas of Arjun Appadurai s media and ideoscapes as a way of Maori being portrayed as menances to society because of the focus on the assumption that Maori are taking advantage of the system or are criminals, as can be seen in The New ZealandHerald, Police Ten 7 (a popular New Zealand program) and some of the latest statistics from the Department of Corrections and Quick Stats. I will attempt to justify my point of how Maori can be considered a diasporic community in New Zealand, based on the ideas of Clifford (1994) and Safran (1991) who explore the world of the forever changing definition of diaspora. My argument: That the ideas of Arjun Appadurais media and ideoscapes best explain how the identity of diasporic Maori has been created in New Zealand. What can we call identity? Identity has been linked to self or many selves to serve the society one is in (James, 1980, p. 294), but one theory I quite liked, was the idea that self and society help to shape one another by societal influence on one self and the outcomes of society by ones actions in response to the influence (Ashmore, Lee, 1997, p. 191). Despite having a presidential scholarship to Baylor University, Grecia s future is hampered by her illegal status in the country and the inactivity of the DREAM Act in congress, which is due largely to its brisk opponents. Critics of the legislation falsely advocate that it grants preferential treatment to undocumented students (Malkin 1). The instruction to make music in worship moves beyond the Levites alone (Foley, 1992) and stretches into the whole body of Israel. Frame (1996:111) says Scripture plainly teaches that God s people are not only to speak, but also to sing, the truth of God (eg. 1 Chron. 16:9; Ps. 33:2 3; Col. 3:16). This last verse demonstrates how the mandate for music has carried on through to the New Covenant people of God. Synagogue worship heavily influenced emerging Christian music (Foley, 1992:35, 50) as seen throughout the New Testament (Martin, 1967:17). We could add Eph. 15:9 (White, 1993, 1996), and Heb. 2:12 where Jesus quotes Ps. 22:22, applying it to the early church. This also challenges the presupposition behind the question, that music was not historically seen as essential. In the New Testament era of Church history, the Levitical Jewish traditions of music and hymn singing in corporate worship continued and relied heavily on this Old Testamentbasis (Guiver, 2009:14). You can identify potential candidates for hymns in Phil. 2:6 11 ; Col. 1:15 20; Eph. 5:14, and possibly 1 Cor. 13 (White, 1993:37), and find designated hymns in Luke s gospel (of Elizabeth, 1:42 45; Mary, 1:46 55; Zechariah, 1:68 79; and Simeon, 2:29 32). In order to relieve their stress, entertainments were necessary. There were many forms of entertainment that were performed throughout America s history. Two of the popular entertainment at that time were minstrel show and freak show. Minstrel show was also known as the blackface, which was a theatrical show that was mainly performed by white peoplewith blackface makeup on. Another popular entertainment was the freak show. It was an exhibition of human with unusual body part. Some of them looked different because they were from cultures, while some of them had genetic mutation or diseases. The minstrel show was a musical stage show performed by mostly whites. The performers blackened their faces and perform music, comic skit and dancing. Jim Crow was one of the popular character which represent a stereotype career slave. He was originated from a popular song called jump jim crow. Another character was Zip Coon, who represent the free blacks. The black face shows used these characters to make fun of blacks and provoke laughter. • 29. Essay on Red Lobster s Ethical Dilemma Red Lobster s Ethical Dilemma Term Paper Gerry Mullen, CEO of Red Lobster restaurants, has been faced with a dilemma. He recently received an email from Terry Modotti, Vice President for Public Relations concerning the lobster retrieval in La Mosquitia, also known as the Mosquito Coast. The article states that many of the young working men are being killed and maimed to make lobsters available at cheap process to consumers in the United States. The men, known as buzos, must dive up to 130 feet for lobster, and face dangerous decompression sickness which begins with paralysis and ends in a slow death. This is due to the fact that there are no medical or decompression facilities on the boats, and there is also no equipment to aid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another disadvantage of implementing this option would be that net earnings would decrease due to a decrease in consumers, and shareholders will be angered by the decreasing figures of the company. With all of the negativity being placed upon the company as a result of this option, a bad light would be shown on the CEO and the company, especially since Gerry is relatively new. Since there are clearly more disadvantages than advantages for Gerry and Red Lobster by exercising this option, I would advise Gerry to further pursue other options. Another option with which Gerry could investigate would be for Red Lobster to offer to pay a higher price for lobster to boat companies in the Mosquito Coast in order for the divers to receive a higher salary cut. A possible advantage to this is that it would provide a better living environment for the divers. It is stated in the article that after the sacabuzos (middlemen), boat captains, and fish processors take their share of the money, what remains for the buzos is a mere $2 per pound of lobster fetched. Within a two week time period, this rate will amount to about $300. If the divers are trying to support families, $300 for two weeks is quite meager. By increasing the price that Red Lobster is willing to pay for wholesale lobster, the divers will benefit considerably due to a higher salary. Another advantage to a higher salary would mean that more individuals would be inclined to become divers, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Capitalism Vs Religion Exam #3 Capitalism thrives in the United States in a manner different than anywhere else in the world. As time passed, it became apparent that spending and creating secured the power it currently possesses. While this country appears to be secular in the way it is regulated, it in actuality owes its economic success to religion. Reality is, the notion of capitalism and the American work ethic is owed to Protestants, despite the secular worldview Americans have held in more recent times. Weber argues that the Protestant work ethicprovided a foundation for the success of capitalism in the secular sphere of collective society. The calling derived such practicality in terms of economics through its individualistic approach to eternal salvation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Worshippers of the faith were now more inclined to save and invest wisely in all their economic endeavors. Because of the practicality implemented in their faith, the Protestants became committed to practicing smarter tactics to obtain a place in Heaven. The role that these ideas played in the formation of their economic success, was integral to not only their success, but the rise of capitalism in the United States. The ideas that were derived from this faith soon became the spirit of capitalism. This spirit was easily applicable to capitalism, and the practices and methods the Protestants developed soon became more commonplace within collective society. The ascetic practices that were being implemented in the United States were now integral to credit and value, which is a core belief of Protestantism. However, despite the success that the United States now possessed due to the rise of capitalism in their society, they reached a level of idleness in their spirit. By complying to economic modesty, the average American worker was now trapped in an iron cage . This iron cage refers to the over rationalization of the United States with their money. By becoming conscious of their actions and aware of the result that followed, the workers spirit died a little. • 31. Central Limit Theorem And The Distribution Of The Number... Central Limit Theorem Abraham De Moivre, a French mathematician, published an article 1733, which he used the normal distribution to approximate the distribution of the number of heads resulting from many tosses of a coin. His work was nearly forgotten until another French mathematician can along who name was Pierre Simon Laplace. Laplace explained De Moivre s findings by approximating the binomial distribution with normal distribution. In 1785 Laplace introduced the characteristic functions which were the sum of error distribution, which took the value of 1 and +1 with equal probabilities. This work helped Laplace with the concept of the CLT, which he wrote a paper on in 1810. Sime`on Denis Poisson tried to provide an exact mathematical analysis to Laplace theorem. Poisson provided proof of the CLT for identically distributed variables. At the end of the 19th century mathematician was changing their train of thoughts from computational to fundamental ( pure math) mathematic. Dirichlet and Bessel followed in the footsteps of Laplace and Poisson. They introduced the discontinuity factors , which proved Poisson s equation for an arbitrary value of n. Cauchy s was the first mathematician to consider probability theoryas pure mathematics. He found an upper bond to the difference between the exact value and the approximation and then specified conditions for those bound to tend to zero. The novel follows the story of two rival gangs, the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs are rich and powerful but feel no emotion; they are cool to the point of not feeling anymore while the Greasers are in poverty and are often shunned by society, but they have a passion for life, the exact opposite of the Socs. The story also discusses the loss of innocence in the main character, Ponyboy Curtis, a young teen in the 1960 s. • 35. Impact Of Social Media On Self-Presentation Social Media has a massive impact on a person s self presentation because of the different trends where everyone wants to fit in with society s expectations of what we should look like. Celebrities are made to be our role models, however, magazines photoshop and make them more toned and a lot slimmer, which makes young people want to make their bodies more like theirs. This then leads to the modern generation becoming self conscious because they feel they have to fit in and achieve an ideal self that fits in with those around them. Erving Goffman sees self presentation in six aspects, which are all related to the idea of life as a drama; persona, performance, staging, teams, role, personal style. According to Goffman, a persona is when someone wears various personality masks depending on which roles they are undertaking, for example, when someone is with their friends the mask they wear defines them as a kind, friendly person whereas when they are with the family the mask will come off and their personality will change. I wear a mask when I m with my friends and this portrays me as a friendly, outgoing character, whereas the mask I wear at home is loud, moody and unproductive. Alongside Goffman s idea of the masks , he also mentions staging. He suggests that our self presentation is constructed and controlled, and it shows the way we set out our self presentation, this includes; the costume we wear, the physical locations and the props we might use. I will also identify the original and early antitrust laws and how they have influenced the economy, as we know it today. Upon the completion of this paper you will understand who was set to benefit (gain) from anti legislation and who loses under the intentions of the antitrust laws today and in the past. LITERATURE REVIEW The United States antitrust legislation is a legislation designed to break up and prevent the formation of new monopolies to increase competition and societal welfare. Thus the United State Antitrust law is a collection of both state and federal government laws enacted to promote fair competition in the economy. The antitrust laws main statutes consist of the Sherman Act of 1890, the Clayton Act of 1914 and the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914. In combination these acts have enforced the proper rules and regulations that businesses must conform to today to ensure that there is a healthy competition within the economy to not only the benefit of the consumers who utilize these services and goods but for the health of the businesses who make up our market industries. • 39. Chemical Reactions And Factors That Affect The Rate Of A... Reactions occur everywhere, and they may take decades, such as fossils, or only seconds, such as lighting a match to occur. Chemical kinetics concerns the rates of chemical reactions and what factors affects these rates (Iodine Clock, 2017). Temperature, concentration, pressure of reacting gases, surface area of reacting solids and the use of catalysts are all factors which affect the rate of a reaction (Bbc.co.uk, 2017). This is because they affect the reaction roles and yields of activation energy, product management and reactant management (William, 2017). This is accomplished by making changes to the concentration, pressure or temperature of a reaction to alter the position of the equilibrium (Bbc.co.uk, 2017). Accordingly, the ... I watched 3 versions of this soliloquy, Kenneth Branagh s version, Ethan Hawke s version and, Mel Gibson s version. They were all very different from each other and unique in their own ways. I believe that Mel Gibson s performance of To be, or not to be was the most effective and I will explain why. Starting with Kenneth Branagh s version, his version was simple and straight to the point. The tomb has low lighting, it s dark and he is alone in that tomb. It was also very quiet. His voice echoes in the whole tomb so there was no music needed because his voice is dramatic enough. In the tomb, there are a lot of bones and crypt, and that can symbolize death later on in the play. In his soliloquy, it was at a flat (eye level) angle with multiple camera shots. First, it was a long shot to show the audience where Gibson was. Then, it was mostly close up shots but still shows Gibson pacing around the tomb. That makes the audience know get a sense of his facial expressions. While filming this, there was many short breaks to show the bones and crypt as Gibson is talking to them they were cuts. Also at the end of his soliloquy, it went faded into the next scene. This is my favorite out of all 3 because Gibson seems really consumed with the soliloquy, you can see that because he pauses in between his lines and at the end, he puts his end down in sorrow.
