THE 8 HABITS ONE BY ONE… Before we can begin to discuss the 8 habits, we need to understand what Covey means by the word PARADIGM. “ A paradigm is the way an individual perceives, understands and interprets the surrounding word --- a mental map” “ Never, ever, think outside the box.”
Habit 1: Be Proactive What is the difference between “Reactive ” and “Proactive ”? The major difference is CHOICE Reactive people instantly are responding to a stimulus, there is no room for choice Proactive people think first – even for a minute – they choose how they will respond, hopefully in sync with their values and goals Circle of Influence/Circle of Concern
Habit 1- Be Proactive Activity Design Be Proactive section on your eportfolio An example of how you have been proactive recently, how you plan to be proactive or an example of how you were not proactive and what you would do to change your reaction Ex: Organize a schedule to make sure that the Fall Syllabus is ready for review by the time I go on maternity leave.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind Things are created twice in your mind behavior The Secret is about visualizing what you want before you get it The staircase approach to goal setting Mission Statement To get started, you must have a destination.
How Do I Create a Mission Statement? My mission is to live with integrity and to make a difference in the lives of others. to play to laugh to learn to love Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day: I shall fear only God. I shall not bear ill toward anyone. I shall not submit to injustice from anyone. I shall conquer untruth by truth. And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering -Mahatma Gandhi I want to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.
Habit 2- Begin with the End in Mind Activity Design Begin with the End in Mind section on your eportfolio Mission Statement Identify a few short term goals that you would like to accomplish Ex: To clean up my office by filing and organizing so that during my maternity leave, my temporary replacement will have easy access to all important information. Ex: To spend quality time with my son before the new baby arrives.
Habit 3: Put First Things First We have to be organized and structured as we figure out our priorities IMPORTANT NOT IMPORTANT URGENT NOT URGENT IV THE SLACKER III THE YES MAN II THE PRIORITIZER I THE PROCRASTINATOR
Habit 3- Put First Things First Activity Design Put First Things First section on your eportfolio Identify a few of your biggest time wasters How will you eliminate them so you will spend more time in Quadrant II? Ex: Going to bed too early is one of my biggest time wasters right now.  I am trying to eliminate this by taking a walk after dinner to energize me a bit and I am planning my evenings so I can get things done around the house and not have it pile up for the weekend.  This will free up my weekends to spend time with my family.
Habit 4: Think Win - Win We have 4 options: Win-Lose (I win, you lose) Lose-Win (Doormat) Lose-Lose (Downward Spiral) Win-Win (Everyone Wins) EMOTIONAL BANK ACCOUNT
HABIT 4 CONTINUED Deposits (create trust) Keeping promises Kindness+ courteousness Clarifying expectations Being loyal to the absent Apologizing Seeking to understand “ Trust is the glue of life. It is the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the fundamental principle that holds all relationships together. And trust grows out of trustworthiness.” Deposits create trust – all win-win relationships are based on trust and trustworthiness. Withdrawals (destroy trust) Breaking promises Unkindness + discourteousness Violating expectations Disloyalty Pride, Conceit, Arrogance Seek first to be understood
Habit 4- Think Win-Win Activity Design Think Win-Win section on your eportfolio Identify one relationship you would like to improve Write down a "deposit" in that person's Relationship Bank Account this week How will this contribute to a Win-Win situation? Ex: I would like to improve my relationship with my husband in terms of spending more quality time together…
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood How many types of Communication are there? Verbal Nonverbal What about listening? Ignoring Pretend listening Selective listening Attentive listening Empathic listening
Habit 5- Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood Activity Design Seek First to Understand section on your eportfolio Five listening styles as described by Stephen Covey: Ignoring Pretend Listening  Selective Listening Attentive Listening Empathic Listening Of 1, 2 and 3 (focusing on poor listening habits), which one best describes your listening skills? Ex: Lately, I seem to pretend listen to what my son asks for if it involves any physical activity…
Habit 6: Synergize Creative cooperation All habits come together Act as role models Be open to different paradigms Act with courage and consideration Be trustworthy Listen Be direct and honest Make deposits only
Habit 6- Synergize Activity Design Synergize section on your eportfolio Choose a relationship you would like to improve Consider the following questions: What is the problem?   What are the needs of both parties?   What are some new ideas that could be considered in solving the problem?   How can you find the best solution?
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw Take care of yourself in 4 basic areas: BODY - workout, eat right, sleep MIND - read, debate, solve puzzles SOUL - service, yoga, church, prayer HEART - new friendships, new activities, keep a journal
Habit 7- Sharpen the Saw Activity Design Sharpen the Saw section on your eportfolio Set a few goals for yourself on how you plan to renew your body, mind, heart and soul this year Ex: I plan to continue to eat healthy, exercise, and find time for myself to read more as this has been placed on the back burner.  I also want to make scheduled plans to get together with friends, or at least find time to talk on the phone in addition to email.
Habit 8: From Effectiveness to Greatness Discuss your own voice Inspire others to find their voice Teach others what you learn Apply what you learn Be attentive to your 4 Intelligences IQ (mental intelligence) PQ (physical intelligence) EQ (emotional intelligence) SQ (spiritual intelligence)
Habit 8- From Effectiveness to Greatness Activity Design From Effectiveness to Greatness section on your eportfolio Which one habit would you like to work on the most and why did you pick that habit?
