PowerPoint
In college courses and in high school, my go-to presentation
software was and to some degree still is PowerPoint. I think
that when it comes to the use of different tools that it is a
matter of comfort, but in order for students to learn new
ways of presenting material, the educators have to learn it
first. One benefit of teachers using the same presentation
style in classes that I have been in is the ease with which we
picked up the material and were able to duplicate (with
teacher-led assistance) what we saw on the screen. Some of
the disadvantages associated with using the same
presentation style like PowerPoint include students losing
interest in the content being presented or getting bored with
the way the material is presented.
Visual Learning Tools
Before our readings this week I did not know there where so
many options for visual display. I have heard of and used
many of the tools mentioned, like Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest,
and Photoshop, but I did not know that they could be used
as visual learning tools in the classroom. I have observed
and participated in classrooms where teachers used
YouTube, but other than that, I haven’t seen any other visual
learning tools in action.
Flipped Classroom
I have never been apart of a flipped classroom myself but
upon reading the sections on flipped classrooms and how
successful it can be as a learning tool, it is definitely a
method that I would use in the classroom. I think that the
concept is useful in differentiating instruction for different
types of learners. I also believe that, just like any
technological resource there is a certain amount of planning
that has to take place in order for the concept to be
effective. Visual learning tools have to be effective and
accurate in order for a flipped classroom to be useful.
Teachers must be able to decipher effective learning tools
from websites that are not useful so that students can follow
along with the guided practice once they enter the
classroom.
Learning Styles
I believe that while each student, no matter how old can
excel when their learning style is catered to, that the material
also has to be effective and immersive. As the article states,
the material has to be exciting enough to reach all students
regardless of their learning style. I believe that
understanding a student’s learning style can really give
teachers the ability to develop cohesive lessons that reach all
types of learners.
