Getting Started with Video and Animation for STC Summit 2014 #stc14Cynthia Chin-Lee
YouTube has transformed popular culture. Video is everywhere. Technical publications groups need to innovate or they will be left behind. One way to innovate and engage customers is through using video or animation. But creating video or animation is not a simple process. To illustrate the complexities of this approach to innovation, we must journey from the “ordinary world” of documentation, to a new, “special world” of media production. On the way, we need to overcome several obstacles: getting management approval; finding guidance and mentors; creating a pilot; testing the process; learning video editing; losing allies and staff; and facing technical problems. To be successful, we must fight back with workarounds and new ideas. Only then can we reach the reward of our journey by publishing our video and animations.
authors: Mary Martyak and Cynthia Chin-Lee, describes how technical publications groups can integrated video and animation into their documentation.

14. DO’s AND DON’TS OF ONLINE PRESENTATION 14
• Success to Online Presentation lies in the work that we put
into designing our deck of Slides.
• In an in-person presentation, we are the main visual for our
audience, and our slides are merely visual aids.
• But when it comes to a online presentation, our slides aren’t
visual aids; they are the visuals.
http://bitly.com/ipuwe MBA (WE) 2014-16 (Section-B)
15. 1. START WITH THE RIGHT TOOL 15
http://bitly.com/ipuwe MBA (WE) 2014-16 (Section-B)
Lync
Go to Meeting
• How many people will
the tool accommodate?
• How much does it cost?
• Which features will we
need?
• How is audio handled?
• Do we want to record
the presentation and
make them available
for later viewing?

d. Animations
The less animation we use, the faster
our slides will load during online
presentation.
There is one type of animation that is
acceptable – and very useful – and
that is the idea of a “build” or a
“reveal”. This is simply where we
keep adding bits to a slide as we talk
about it.
20. 5. Find Ways to Interact With Your Audience 20
http://bitly.com/ipuwe MBA (WE) 2014-16 (Section-B)
•Nearly, All Online Presentation
platforms offers way to ask
polling questions and

http://bitly.com/ipuwe MBA (WE) 2014-16 (Section-B)
In an online Presentation
preparing notes and keeping
them near at our desk ensures
no important point has been
missed.
22. 7. FIND A QUIET LOCATION 22
http://bitly.com/ipuwe MBA (WE) 2014-16 (Section-B)
• Start giving presentation from a
location or room which is going
to have minimal background
noise.
• Furthermore, if our presentation
agenda includes topics that are
confidential, then it is
preferable to sit in a private
room.
23. 23 8. CLEAN UP YOUR DESKTOP
http://bitly.com/ipuwe MBA (WE) 2014-16 (Section-B)
• It’s an online Presentation so
those dirty coffee mugs on our
desk can stay! Be Cautious!
• However, we should clean up all
the application and file icons on
our computer desktop. They are
distracting for our participants
and could include something
which is confidential.

24. 9. TURN OFF MESSAGING APPLICATIONS 24
http://bitly.com/ipuwe MBA (WE) 2014-16 (Section-B)
If you are logged into any instant
messaging services on your
computer, it is advisable to log
out completely or set your
status to “do not disturb”.
25. 10. OPEN YOUR PRESENTATIONS FILES 25
As participants join online presentation, they will be able to see your
computer desktop live – so be ready! Have your meeting presentation
file open so it’s the first thing they see. A nice touch would be if you
have written a welcome note on the first slide, for example: “Welcome
to the meeting! Topic: …..”

Editor's Notes
You may have been asked to prepare a project summary, a report, a deck…etc
And it can be really confusing, especially if you are starting from scratch and not sure;
How to start
What template to use
What to include
...
If not planned well, may take long hours
You may want to change/modify the template, the content…etc a lot while working on…
And in some certain cases may really drive crazy, especially when crashed…
Plato
If you know how to deal with it and leverage it to create your own presentation
These are the six principles I usually try to stick to when I am working with PowerPoint.
They seem very obvious to all of us but I promise you we usually take them for granted!
Need to know the audience, their background, interests and understand what they want to see to define;
How we want them to benefit?
What do we want to accomplish after the presentation is over?
what design, what template will we use?
Is the message I am trying to deliver clear to everyone?
Do I highlight it well enough?
The content and the way you put them together is the key to deliver the message
If you cook all those ingredients all together and dump into a bowl, you will get this
So easy to cook
Will people like it? Would you like it?
Very simple but classy presentation
