Visual arts experiences in schools develop students' creative abilities. Students learn to communicate through the images they make and develop pride in their work. They bring new images into existence by manipulating visual elements and basing ideas on observation and imagination. Students acquire skills in various materials and techniques, and learn to present their works effectively. The document defines art, craft, and design - art concerns concepts and ideas, craft focuses on skills, and design specifies products in advance.
This document discusses a module on local materials used in Philippine contemporary art. The module contains three lessons: 1) local materials used in Philippine contemporary art, 2) traditional techniques used, and 3) contemporary materials and techniques used. This thesis analyzes how digital technology has affected artistic processes. It discusses the work of three digital artists - Joan Truckenbrod, Cynthia Beth Rubin, and James Faure Walker - who pioneered the use of computers, tablets, and styluses between 1975-2005. Truckenbrod's early algorithmic works depicted invisible realms and tensions through monochromatic images. Over time, her art combined traditional and digital elements to communicate natural forces. Rubin and Walker also explored new techniques using digital tools, broadening their artistic expressions.
This document provides information about an Art, Craft and Design course, including the skills and disciplines covered, requirements for students, and resources available. It outlines that students must be punctual, meet deadlines, and have the required materials for each lesson. Consequences for missing deadlines include detention. The coursework counts towards students' GCSE grade, so keeping up to date is important. The document also provides links to the school art blog and Pinterest page for artist research and examples, and notes an after-school art club for working on homework and getting support.
1. The document discusses local materials that can be used for creating art in the Philippines, including materials sourced from the sea shore, rice fields, tropical forests, and mangrove forests.
2. It provides examples of local materials like shells, driftwood, leaves, vines, and fibers that can be acquired from these environments.
3. Choosing appropriate local materials suited for the artwork is important for realizing the artist's concept and bringing out their creativity.

8. What’s In
In the previous lesson, you were familiarized with the different things you may consider
when designing the artwork you want to create. Let us recall some of the terms you have
learned through the activity “CrosswARt Puzzle.”
Directions: Solve the crossword puzzle using the clues given below. Write your answers on
a sheet of paper.
CrosswArt Puzzle
ACROSS
2 art style; emphasis on realistic, true-to-life representations
4 the general atmosphere that the artwork generates
5 main idea of the artwork
7 art style; presents surreal and abstract subjects in a realistic manner
8 art style; represents the subject in a simplified, abstract manner
10 art style; presents a message through visual representation using symbols
DOWN
1 material that the artist uses to create his or her artwork
3 art style; focus on evoking feeling and emotions
6 what the artwork is all about
9 the way the artist presents his or her vision
9. What’s New
How many times were you in awe of artwork and thought to yourself, "How did they do
that?" We often imagine the artist as a solitary being misunderstood by society working
tirelessly in the studio to create a masterpiece and how fantastic it is that a single creative act
evolves into a work of art.
Help the artist identify various techniques he or she can employ to create
contemporary art using the “wikarambulan” and the pictures as clues. Write your answer on a
sheet of paper.

10. Artists employ effective techniques and rely on a variety of materials to complete their
work, beginning with a pencil and paper canvas, paints, and brushes for the painter; wood,
stone, and tools, for the sculptor and film, digital camera, software, or chemicals used to
tamper with an image are some of the things the photographer needs. Some are even
surrounded by entire industries that revolve around their work. Many artists learn their craft
through practice, research, and observation, and experimentation.
What does it take to become an artist? The technique and skill applied to the
production are some characteristics that are frequently valued in the work of an artist.
Developing your skills entails a lot of work and repetition of skill or procedure until it becomes
second nature to you. The technique is also developed as you find methods to use the
materials to create your remarkable work of art.
With the expansion of the art world, many people are becoming perplexed about artistic
skill. Artists with artistic skills are those who work in the field of fine arts.
Each artist develops their artistic abilities through the use of various mediums. A medium is a
material or substance from which a work is created. The artists use these materials to express
and communicate their feelings and ideas.
As follows, the medium defines the nature of the art form:
1. The sculptor employs metal, wood, stone, clay,
and glass in his work. Sculptures are classified as
“three-dimensional” arts because they occupy
space and have volume. Sculpture in the form of
pottery is a type of sculpture. Other examples
include figures like the revolving Rizal Monument
of Lupao and General Antonio Luna statue in
Nueva Ecija, and santos or saint carvings by
Edwin Layug inside Christian churches Bulacan.

What is It
11. 2. The architect employs a variety of building materials such as wood, bamboo, bricks, stone,
concrete, and others. Buildings are also referred to as "three-dimensional." However, because
we are moving into structures, architecture has the added element of time.
3. The painter works with pigments (such as watercolor, oil, tempera, textile paint, acrylic, ink,
and so on) on a usually flat surface (wood, canvas, paper, a stone wall such as cave paintings.)
4. The printmaker employs ink that has been printed or transferred on a surface (wood, metal
plates, or silkscreen) as part of a duplicating or reproducing process. Prints and paintings are
considered “two-dimensional” arts because they include the surface or ground on which
coloring substances are applied. On the other hand, prints can be reproduced in several pre-
determined editions, whereas paintings are unique and one-of-a-kind.

12. 5. The musician employs sound and instruments (including the human voice), whereas the
dancers use their bodies. A Dumagat chanter sings creation stories differently than a classical
singer or a pop singer influenced by the Western music scale (Headland 1975).
6. The dancer employs his or her body and its movement. Dance is frequently accompanied
by music, but some dances do not require musical accompaniment to be performed. Dance
can tell stories, but it can also convey abstract ideas that do not require a narrative.
7. The theater artist integrates all arts by utilizing the stage, production design, performance
elements, and script to allow the visual, musical, dance and other aspects to come together as
a whole work.

13. 8. The camera is used by the photographer and filmmaker to record the outside world. The
filmmaker uses the cinematographic camera to record and edit production design, sound
engineering, performance, and screenplay. Images in digital photography and film can be
transferred to a computer, eliminating the need for celluloid or negatives, processing
chemicals, or print. It appears to be a paradox that when nearly everyone takes photographs
using cell phones and can display them to a global audience through online social media
platforms, appreciation for fine art photography seems to be a trend (Caruncho 2020).

Filipino Migration Stories, Contemporary Literary Pieces
9. Words are used by the author of a novel, poetry, nonfiction, and fiction, and Filipino literature
is having its moment now (Gabrillo 2019). The designer, performance artist, and installation
artist all make use of the combination of the different media mentioned above.
What techniques are being employed by contemporary artists today?
Technique refers to how an artist employs and manipulates materials to achieve the
desired effect and communicate the desired concept or meaning following their personal style
(modern, Neoclassic, etc.). The technique is determined by the medium's distinct personality
or nature.
14. The technique entails using tools and technology ranging from the most traditional such
as carving, silkscreen, analog photography, and filmmaking, to the modern like digital
photography, digital filmmaking, music production, industrial design, and robotics (Course Hero
n.d.).
Here are a few examples of art techniques used by artists.
1. Collage are art production techniques used in the visual arts. The artwork is made from an
assemblage of different forms, resulting in a new whole. Magazine and newspaper clippings,
ribbons, paints, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts,
photographs, and other found objects may be glued to a piece of paper or canvas.
2. Decollage is the inverse of collage. It is created by cutting, tearing away, or removing pieces
of an original image rather than assembling all or parts of existing images.
In English, the French word "decollage" means "to take-off" or "to become unglued" or
"to become unstuck." The Cut-up technique is an example of decollage. The scratched or
shredded poster is placed over another in a similar technique. The top poster or posters are
ripped, revealing the poster or posters beneath in varying degrees (Wikipedia 2020).
3. Graffiti is writing or drawing that has been scribbled, scratched, or painted on a wall or other
surface without permission, usually in a public place. Graffiti can be anything from simple
written words to elaborate wall paintings. Graffiti can convey underlying social and political
messages, and spray paint graffiti styles have inspired an entire artistic expression genre.
Collage by Cierra and Tiffany. Photo by Joel Bullock Emil Portrait, Collage/decollage,
15. 4. Land art, also known as earth arts, are a type of art movement in which the landscape and
the art are inextricably linked. It is also a natural art form, created with raw materials such as
soil, rock (bedrock, boulders, stones), organic media (logs, branches, leaves), and water.
Materials such as concrete, metal, asphalt, or mineral pigments are introduced. The sculpture
is not placed in the landscape; instead, the landscape is the medium through which it is created.
Earthmoving equipment is frequently used. The works are commonly found in the open, far
from civilization, where they are left to chance and erode due to natural forces.
5. Digital Arts is an artistic work or practice in which digital technology is an integral part of the
creative or presentation process. Digital art is classified as a subset of new media art.
Despite some opposition, the impact of digital technology has transformed activities
such as painting, drawing, sculpture, and music/sound art while also spawning new forms such
as net art. Virtual reality and digital installation art have emerged as recognized artistic
practices. More broadly, the term "digital artist" refers to an artist who creates art through the
use of digital technologies.
Land art at Brückenfest 2008 in Munich, Germany
16. Digital art techniques are widely used in advertising and by filmmakers to create visual
effects in the mainstream media. To make their work, both digital and traditional artists use a
variety of electronic information and programs. Digital art is a term used to describe
contemporary art that employs mass production or digital media.
6. Multimedia It refers to artwork that has been created using more than one medium. It refers
to a piece of visual art that combines several traditionally distinct visual art media. Work on
canvas, for example, that incorporates paint, ink, and collage.
When creating a painted or photographed work with mixed media, it is critical to
carefully select the layers and allow enough drying time between the layers to ensure the final
piece has structural integrity, especially if many different layers are imposed. Using mixed
media, you can achieve a variety of effects. Found objects, in conjunction with traditional
artists, can perform a wide range of self-expression.
In Art In Island museum in Manila, visitors are encouraged to interact and have fun with
the art installations. These unique 3D art paintings, when photographed from a certain angle,
create optical illusions that make it seems like the visitor is stepping out of the image or is being
attacked by it (Nėjė 2015).
7. Printmaking is the process of creating artworks by painting on paper. Prints are made by
transferring ink from a matrix or a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other material. Metal
plates, such as copper or zinc; polymer plates for engraving or etching; stone aluminum or
polymer for lithography; blocks of wood crafts and wood engraving; and linoleum for linocuts
are common types of templates. The screen printing process employs silk or synthetic fabric
screens. In an article Ambie Abano, an awarded artist and senior member of the Philippine

17. Association of Printmakers, she said that her pieces, “Women hold up half the sky” and “Self-
assured,” communicates visually the textures revealed on a person’s identity when the veils of
societal perception and prejudice are lifted (Aportadera 2014).
Integrated Arts Production
This entails combining two or more artistic styles, techniques, and media to produce
or create a work of art for a specific audience. This practice may include the creation,
research, development, production, and presentation of an artistic work.
Production planning is the process of ensuring that enough raw materials,
personnel, and other necessary items are procured and ready to create finished products on
time. During production planning, you should consider the following steps.
1. Recognize the difference between arts and crafts.
The idea of producing arts and the process of creating crafts are related but distinct
activities. While art production is an open-ended, unstructured process, crafts production is
goal-oriented and structured. Art production demonstrates the artist's creativity, emotional
release, or self-expression.
2. Distinguish between the process of art and the product of art.
Painting, drawing, and sculpting are all artistic processes. Concentrate on the
process rather than the product. Allow yourself to explore your own creative dynamic and
recognize that no two pieces of artwork will look alike because each artist's personality will
shine through the work.
3. Practice makes perfect.
Making art provides a plethora of opportunities to learn by doing. According to
researchers, when hands-on activities are combined with learning, a person retains more
information.

18. 4. Recognize your creative abilities.
Each of us possesses the ability to be creative or to create something new. If you
believe in your creative self, you will be more likely to find constructive outlets for it.
Creativity is a valuable personal resource to nourish and use on a daily basis, not just a
memory stored in the brain.
Before undertaking on an artistic endeavor, keep the following in mind:
1. Establish a pleasant working environment.
2. Take a few moments each day to take in your surroundings.
3. Perfect practice makes perfect.
4. Create a concept for your artwork before beginning the project.
5. You should never stop learning.

and make the surface relatively even to ensure successful printing. Apply the medium (ink
or paint) to the collagraph plates using regular brushes or sponge brushes. Move at a swift
pace to keep the paint from totally drying. If this happens, moisten the medium a little with a
spray of water.
5. Center the paper over the plate and gently rub and press the paper. Once you are confident
the print has been made, remove the paper to reveal the image. Pull more prints to create
a series. Paint may need to be reapplied.
20. 6. Give your digital or mixed media art a title.
7. Exhibit your print art through your chosen media platform.

Now that you have already know how to create contemporary art, it is time for you to apply
what you learned.
Integrated Art Production
Directions: Design and create an original production about “Covid-19 Crisis and Bulacan”
using the materials available to you while employing appropriate techniques and artistic styles.
You may make any art form (sculpture, dance, music, visual arts, photography, literary arts,
digital or mixed media art) and apply one or a combination of techniques learned from this
lesson (collage, decollage, land art, printmaking, etc. You may choose the manner so you can
present your artwork skillfully. You can do an online exhibit during your class meet, take a
photo and share it on a media platform, or write its description and submit to your teacher the
actual artwork. Your performance will be graded using the criteria below. You will be given
another week to do this. Fill the template and use it as a guide for your artwork presentation.
