Techniques and Performance Practices Applied to
Contemporary Art
Ready to Launch!
The availability and variety of materials and the possibilities offered by
technology expand the choices of artists. These are essential to the develop-
ment of contemporary art.
Here are some of the artworks of some well known Contemporary artists
namely Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, Pacita Abad and Impy Pilapil.
Instructions: ACTIVITY 1 Note how these artists put together the materials
to form an art piece. Then Answer the following questions
1. How would you describe the artwork?
2. What is the subject matter of the artwork?
3. What materials are used in the artwork?
4. What are the dominant colors?
Contemporary Artists feel free to experiment with materials and use
technology to explore possibilities. What would you do with old textile, used
plastic bottles, buri, or abaca? How can indigenous materials, found objects,
recycled materials be combined to make an artwork? Can you use the com-
puter to plan an art space before installing an artwork? These are questions
that artists grapple with in choosing or planning the materials to use for their
artworks
This module describes the materials used by contemporary artists in
making their artworks.
Aim at the Target!
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. identify the materials used in contemporary art
2. describe how technology has redefined art
3. make an artwork using selected materials
4. explain the process of making an artwork
5. name and describe different types of techniques in art making
6. give examples of how Filipino artists use certain art techniques
7. explain how contemporary artists do interactive and collaborative art
Try This!
Perception in art stands for a complex relation between visual
stimuli and a personal understanding of them. It is a theoretical postulate
that aims to clarify the relation between artworks and individual opinions
and evaluations. Far from being a universally established matrix of under-
standing art, perception is conditioned by a context from which observation
and evaluation are made.

Analysis
Many contemporary artists do not have formal studies in the fine arts
but are self-taught. Concerned with the development of their talents and
skills in art-making, they study on their own, interact with artists, and read
a lot about the lives of artists and their artworks. They also explore the ma-
terials in hardware stores or experiment with chemical reactions on their
base material. There are those who learn welding and simple engineering
skills. Some hire resin makers, house painters, and materials fabricators to
help them in constructing their artworks.
An example is Ohm David's installation art where he used metal and
nylon strings and projected a spotlight onto the figure that he created.

Abstraction and Generalization
There are different types of techniques that artists can choose from:
Collage is made by adhering flat elements such as newspaper or magazine
cutouts, printed text, illustrations, photographs, cloths, strings, etc. to a
flat surface to create a thick layer that is almost like a relief sculpture.
Decalcomania is the process of applying gouache to paper or glass then
transferring a reversal of that image onto canvas or other flat materials.
Decoupage is done by gluing decorative paper cutouts onto an object and
then coating these with one or more coats of transparent coating or var-
nish.
Frottage is the technique of rubbing crayon on a piece of paper which has
been placed over an object or an image. The impression of the image can be
made using leaves, wood, wire screen, or metal with embossed image or
words.
Montage is used for photography or film where a pictorial image is juxta-
posed or placed overlapping to make another picture or design.
Trapunto painting is the technique used by Pacita Abad where her canvas-
es are padded, sewn, and often filled with sequins, beads, shells, buttons,
tiny mirrors, bits of glass, rickrack, swatches of precious textiles, and other
things that she picks up from her travels and journeys.
Digital applications for art viewing is another technique. An example was
made possible by the Samsung Supports the Arts FACETS based at
Yuchengco Museum.
Contemporary artists salvage materials that can be recycled and made
into creative forms. They can make artworks that combine structure and
wood and interact with the wind to produce music. An example is Chime Ha-
lo, the hanging bamboo chimes that create sound when blown by the wind
done by Cavite-born artist Impy Pilapil. Los Baños, Laguna artists Alfredo
and Isabel Aquilizan's Project Belonging gathered used objects, clothes, per-
sonal accessories, and many other things and compressed them into cube
shapes. These represent the boxes sent by Overseas Filipino Workers to their
families left behind. Moving abroad, the couple artists collected hundreds of
rubber slippers used by inmates in Singapore's Changi prison and made
these into artworks in the form of several wings that stand on metal support.
(To see the artworks, log on to http://drawingroomgallery.com/artist/alfredo-
isabel-aquilizan-2/.)
They combine various found objects to create a metaphor of everyday
human life and depict issues of identity, journey, migration, and displace-
ment. Some artists combine indigenous materials with textile and mount
these on a painted flat surface. Paper as an art medium is also explored by
artists like Mona Alcudia of Cebu who makes solid forms as well as transpar-
ent artworks using paper. In outdoor sculpture, welded brass mounted on
concrete is used a lot. Wood and glass, on the other hand, are used for indoor
sculpture. Found objects are combined and may be covered with resin. Paint-
ing is no longer confined to canvas hung on the wall. They can also be found
on ceilings and floors. Some are done outdoors, like the Singapore ArtBridge
(to see the artwork, log on to http://www.singaporeartbridge.com/) which
was painted by Batanes-born artist Pacita Abad with 2,350 multiple colors.
Many local artists lead the community or students in painting murals on
walls to make a more pleasant environment and to raise consciousness to-
ward environmental protection. In architecture, there is extensive use of glass
and steel. Color combination is either complementary or strong contrast,
such as orange and blue, red and white. Over the there have been a lot of
building construction, such as malls, convention centers, years, business
process centers, industrial parks, and government service buildings.
All these demand art and contemporary artists are producing a huge
body of works not only for indoor use but for outdoor, as well. In performance
art, artists use a variety of props such as rope, plastic, textile, and found ob-
jects. Paint is also used for body art. An example is Cagayan de Oro artist Ni-
colas Aca who paints his body to project an effect. Technology has also rede-
fined art in many ways. Some examples are (a) light structures and floor
drawings using colored laser beams and smoke; (b) tubes hanging on the ceil-
ing that respond to the viewer's movements, sound, and touch; (c) a wall-
climbing robot holding a paint; and (d) a pen controlled by a software pro-
gram to create certain patterns. Because of the usefulness of new materials
to art-making, artists have to upgradė their skills and learn the use of com-
puter programs and its applications.
Welding is also useful for fabrication and building structure. This re-
quires physical strength and special tools. Some materials have chemical
components that may be hazardous to the health such as acid, resin, and fi-
berglass. The availability and variety of materials and the possibilities offered
by technology expand the choices of artists. This is essential to the develop-
ment of contemporary art.
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
Instruction: Provide your answers that corresponds to the given questions.
Write your answers on your answer sheets.
1. Identify the materials used in contemporary art.
2. Describe how technology has redefined art.
It comes with augmented reality technology (which is available from the
downloading station at the museum). It transforms Filipino digital artworks
into immersive experiences. It is also (an) interactive and curated guide to the
Filipino masters, giving you more information about select pieces from the
museum collection and the artists behind them (Yuchengco Museum)
Mixing different materials is popular among contemporary artists. Tex-
ture is a fascinating thing and can go beautifully with painting, as seen in Ilo-
ilo artist Ed Defensor's In The Wind the artwork online at http://
www.eddefensor.com/ARTTOGO2. html). Bacolod artist Anita Feria collects
ceramic pieces and arranges them in an artistic way on a flat background. In
art production, an artist can work alone or interact with fellow artists. Inter-
active and collaborative works are gaining popularity among Filipino artists.
Visual and performance artists combine their talents and skills for public per-
formances, such as the visual art, music, and performances by Mindanao art-
ists at the Project Bakawan Arts Festival held at the University of the
Philippines, Diliman.

Reinforcement & Enrichment
Contemporary art is not confined to the museum. Artworks are also
found in galleries, art schools, side streets, and public spaces like the train or
bus stations, shopping centers, or parks. Many installation artworks are in-
tended for display in a particular setting and for a given span of time. Then,
they are deconstructed and cannot be repeated. Some artworks are posted
online. This means anyone who has access to the Internet can view the art-
work and actually purchase it. Style in contemporary art can fall under of the
more than 100 any styles, but can be categorized under the few big move-
ments in art. Artists salvage materials that can be recycled and make these
into creative forms. They can make artworks that combine structure and
wood and interact with the wind to make music. Artists explore the materials
in hardware stores, and experiment with chemical reactions on their base
material. There are those who learn welding and simple engineering skills.
Some hire resin makers, house painters, and material fabricators to help
them in constructing their artworks.

  • 5. Ready to Launch! The availability and variety of materials and the possibilities offered by technology expand the choices of artists. These are essential to the develop- ment of contemporary art. Here are some of the artworks of some well known Contemporary artists namely Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, Pacita Abad and Impy Pilapil. Instructions: ACTIVITY 1 Note how these artists put together the materials to form an art piece. Then Answer the following questions 1. How would you describe the artwork? 2. What is the subject matter of the artwork? 3. What materials are used in the artwork? 4. What are the dominant colors? Contemporary Artists feel free to experiment with materials and use technology to explore possibilities. What would you do with old textile, used plastic bottles, buri, or abaca? How can indigenous materials, found objects, recycled materials be combined to make an artwork? Can you use the com- puter to plan an art space before installing an artwork? These are questions that artists grapple with in choosing or planning the materials to use for their artworks This module describes the materials used by contemporary artists in making their artworks. Aim at the Target! After going through this module, you are expected to: 1. identify the materials used in contemporary art 2. describe how technology has redefined art 3. make an artwork using selected materials 4. explain the process of making an artwork 5. name and describe different types of techniques in art making 6. give examples of how Filipino artists use certain art techniques 7. explain how contemporary artists do interactive and collaborative art Try This!
  • 6. Perception in art stands for a complex relation between visual stimuli and a personal understanding of them. It is a theoretical postulate that aims to clarify the relation between artworks and individual opinions and evaluations. Far from being a universally established matrix of under- standing art, perception is conditioned by a context from which observation and evaluation are made. Artwork by: Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan 1 2 Artwork by: Pacita Abad Artwork by: Impy Pilapil Keep This in Mind! 3
  • 7. Keep This in Mind! Analysis Many contemporary artists do not have formal studies in the fine arts but are self-taught. Concerned with the development of their talents and skills in art-making, they study on their own, interact with artists, and read a lot about the lives of artists and their artworks. They also explore the ma- terials in hardware stores or experiment with chemical reactions on their base material. There are those who learn welding and simple engineering skills. Some hire resin makers, house painters, and materials fabricators to help them in constructing their artworks. An example is Ohm David's installation art where he used metal and nylon strings and projected a spotlight onto the figure that he created. Ohm David Installation Art
  • 8. Abstraction and Generalization There are different types of techniques that artists can choose from: Collage is made by adhering flat elements such as newspaper or magazine cutouts, printed text, illustrations, photographs, cloths, strings, etc. to a flat surface to create a thick layer that is almost like a relief sculpture. Decalcomania is the process of applying gouache to paper or glass then transferring a reversal of that image onto canvas or other flat materials. Decoupage is done by gluing decorative paper cutouts onto an object and then coating these with one or more coats of transparent coating or var- nish. Frottage is the technique of rubbing crayon on a piece of paper which has been placed over an object or an image. The impression of the image can be made using leaves, wood, wire screen, or metal with embossed image or words. Montage is used for photography or film where a pictorial image is juxta- posed or placed overlapping to make another picture or design. Trapunto painting is the technique used by Pacita Abad where her canvas- es are padded, sewn, and often filled with sequins, beads, shells, buttons, tiny mirrors, bits of glass, rickrack, swatches of precious textiles, and other things that she picks up from her travels and journeys. Digital applications for art viewing is another technique. An example was made possible by the Samsung Supports the Arts FACETS based at Yuchengco Museum.
  • 9. Contemporary artists salvage materials that can be recycled and made into creative forms. They can make artworks that combine structure and wood and interact with the wind to produce music. An example is Chime Ha- lo, the hanging bamboo chimes that create sound when blown by the wind done by Cavite-born artist Impy Pilapil. Los Baños, Laguna artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan's Project Belonging gathered used objects, clothes, per- sonal accessories, and many other things and compressed them into cube shapes. These represent the boxes sent by Overseas Filipino Workers to their families left behind. Moving abroad, the couple artists collected hundreds of rubber slippers used by inmates in Singapore's Changi prison and made these into artworks in the form of several wings that stand on metal support. (To see the artworks, log on to http://drawingroomgallery.com/artist/alfredo- isabel-aquilizan-2/.) They combine various found objects to create a metaphor of everyday human life and depict issues of identity, journey, migration, and displace- ment. Some artists combine indigenous materials with textile and mount these on a painted flat surface. Paper as an art medium is also explored by artists like Mona Alcudia of Cebu who makes solid forms as well as transpar- ent artworks using paper. In outdoor sculpture, welded brass mounted on concrete is used a lot. Wood and glass, on the other hand, are used for indoor sculpture. Found objects are combined and may be covered with resin. Paint- ing is no longer confined to canvas hung on the wall. They can also be found on ceilings and floors. Some are done outdoors, like the Singapore ArtBridge (to see the artwork, log on to http://www.singaporeartbridge.com/) which was painted by Batanes-born artist Pacita Abad with 2,350 multiple colors. Many local artists lead the community or students in painting murals on walls to make a more pleasant environment and to raise consciousness to- ward environmental protection. In architecture, there is extensive use of glass and steel. Color combination is either complementary or strong contrast, such as orange and blue, red and white. Over the there have been a lot of building construction, such as malls, convention centers, years, business process centers, industrial parks, and government service buildings.
  • 10. All these demand art and contemporary artists are producing a huge body of works not only for indoor use but for outdoor, as well. In performance art, artists use a variety of props such as rope, plastic, textile, and found ob- jects. Paint is also used for body art. An example is Cagayan de Oro artist Ni- colas Aca who paints his body to project an effect. Technology has also rede- fined art in many ways. Some examples are (a) light structures and floor drawings using colored laser beams and smoke; (b) tubes hanging on the ceil- ing that respond to the viewer's movements, sound, and touch; (c) a wall- climbing robot holding a paint; and (d) a pen controlled by a software pro- gram to create certain patterns. Because of the usefulness of new materials to art-making, artists have to upgradė their skills and learn the use of com- puter programs and its applications. Welding is also useful for fabrication and building structure. This re- quires physical strength and special tools. Some materials have chemical components that may be hazardous to the health such as acid, resin, and fi- berglass. The availability and variety of materials and the possibilities offered by technology expand the choices of artists. This is essential to the develop- ment of contemporary art. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION Instruction: Provide your answers that corresponds to the given questions. Write your answers on your answer sheets. 1. Identify the materials used in contemporary art. 2. It is also (an) interactive and curated guide to the Filipino masters, giving you more information about select pieces from the museum collection and the artists behind them (Yuchengco Museum) Mixing different materials is popular among contemporary artists. Tex- ture is a fascinating thing and can go beautifully with painting, as seen in Ilo- ilo artist Ed Defensor's In The Wind the artwork online at http:// www.eddefensor.com/ARTTOGO2. html). Bacolod artist Anita Feria collects ceramic pieces and arranges them in an artistic way on a flat background. In art production, an artist can work alone or interact with fellow artists. Inter- active and collaborative works are gaining popularity among Filipino artists. Artworks are also found in galleries, art schools, side streets, and public spaces like the train or bus stations, shopping centers, or parks. Many installation artworks are in- tended for display in a particular setting and for a given span of time. Then, they are deconstructed and cannot be repeated. Some artworks are posted online. This means anyone who has access to the Internet can view the art- work and actually purchase it. Style in contemporary art can fall under of the more than 100 any styles, but can be categorized under the few big move- ments in art.
