Medium
Medium in art pertains to:
• materials used in the creation of artworks that serves as a
channel of communication to the listeners, audience,
viewers or maybe readers.
• method of communicating the artist's insights, feelings, and
sentiments through the creation
• are necessary to transform the artist's creative ideas which
are abstractions to something more concrete and tangible
for greater appreciation

39. Contemporary media involves the use of the traditional such
as crayon, oil, paint, Gouache, human finger and the like.
However, with the rise of greater dynamism among artists,
other forms of media were utilized to deliver a more intense
art work. This involves the use of ' out of the box' materials
such as the following ' indigenous materials ' which includes
the following:
• Coffee
• Wine from coconut juice (Tuba)
• Garlic
• Rust
• Human Blood
• Onion
• Mud
• Human hair
• Tomato
• Soy Sauce
• Staple Wires
• Solar

43. Traditional materials in sculpting includes the use
of a carving media such as bronze, glass, granite,
ice, ivory, plaster, stone and wood while casting
media includes cement, metal, plaster, plastic,
synthetic resin and wax. On the other hand,
modeling media uses clay, papier-mache, plaster,
sand; possibly styrofoam.
Recent development have allowed the use of
varied materials known as Found Objects. These
are valuable materials or medium that can
actually convey deeper messages as they tell a
story or even express a perspective. Found Objects
allow Filipino artists to express themselves in a
more distinct and unique manner while
promoting environmental consciousness.
OUR LADY OF REVENGE by Riel Hilario
Made of carved wood, metal, fiberglass and found
objects. This work similar to Hilario's other relevant
works of art brought a socially relevant surreal edge
to sculpture. This work exemplifies the artist's wit,
humor, and intellect.

45. Electronic media came the rise of electronic art or Digital art
which involves the use of computers and even handheld gadgets
that has the capacity to draw, edit and modify images such as
drawings and photos. This entails the knowledge of varied
software and programs such as Photoshop , Illustrators , Maya and
the like that can create graphics and designs in its most vivid
creation.
Electronic form is an evolution of the traditional methods such as
Graphic art software which is for illustration and animation; 3D
computer graphics for sculpture; desktop publishing software or
the usual writing and manual page layout; touchscreens in lies of
traditional techniques in digital painting; computer stimulation
functions to create art.

47. FASHION
PHOTOGRAPHY
A very young photographer who
was a self-made success, BJ
Pascual's eye for fashion has made
him a favorite with magazine
editors. Still under 20, this self-
taught photographer has already
shot more than 100 magazine
covers.
21
49. Similar to the traditional medium which requires individual images or frames shown in
rapid succession is still being employed. However, contemporary developments in film
making now involves animation, computer-generated imagery, stop motion and video
art.
As exemplified in the all-Filipino film below specifically RPG Metanoia shown in 2010
and Saving Sally in 2016, much has already changed. Animated images can be
combined with real human actors which is indeed a milestone in the history of
Philippine Cinema.
CONTEMPORARY FILM
23
50. RPG Metanoia is the first full length Philippine
animated film presented in 3D. A 2010 computer-
animated adventure film produced by Ambient
Media, Thaumatrope Animation and Star Cinema.
Saving Sally is a 2016 English-language Philippine
animated-live romantic comedy directed by Avid

51. CONTEMPORARY
LITERATURE
Written narratives, short stories, novels, and the
like are not necessarily found on published
materials anymore but largely on online
sources such as the Tagalog Online Pocketbook,
Pinoypub.ph, Wattpad and the like.
Philippine literature written by contemporary
authors can edit and re-edit their work online
by registering into their accounts. Moreover,
these authors are allowed to write per chapter
such that one chapter can already be uploaded
while the other chapters are still in the making.

PERFORMING ARTS
The award-winning Shadow play performed by the El Gamma Penumbra in 'Asia's
Got Talent' Performing arts is a form of entertainment created by the artist's physical
presence as a medium. Skills and genre vary which includes dance, theatre, and re-
enactment. The traditional ways of presenting dances, song performances and even
plays are now influenced by technology and the ingenuity of the mind of its creative
writers, producers, and performers. Shadow play is actually a traditional form of story-
telling and entertainment using puppets, a blanket or curtain and lights to project
the shadow.
26
53. Born was the El Gamma Penumbra which is an all-male group with 27 members who
performed a shadow play incorporating global issues specifically purposive of
protecting the environment and its resources.
27
55. Contemporary Art that defines Filipino artistry and ingenuity. Such
is revealed in the creation of the very unique and intricately made
lanterns from Pampanga. Lantern-making is difficult in every inch of
its production. Lighting varies with its corresponding movement
and color. Synchronization of the rotor is necessary in every part of
the lantern when it is working on its patterns. The use of lights,
music, and synchronization of the pattern's movements requires the
use of a 3D software to create the design workflow. The reality of
scarcity in our natural resources whilst the growing waste produced
in every Filipino household became a focal point in the promotion of
Recycling and Reusing. Example of these products includes bags,
receptacles, etc.

Editor's Notes
Today we will discover techniques and practices applied to contemporary art.
Contemporary art is often looked at with a skeptical eye. The truth about contemporary artis that it uses techniques that most people aren’t quite used to, causing that skepticism to come into play.

replace the golden sun and the three stars
A work of art is criticized according no longer on its aesthetic value and if it is pleasing to the senses.

the artwork of Ronald Ventura’s “The Blind Child” in 2011.
Techniques that are among the most relevant in Contemporary Art today.
One of the artistic movements that has been most relevant throughout the contemporary art movement is minimalism.
Over the past forty years, largescale art, and art that includes the environment has come into its own as one of the most important movements within contemporary art.

Unlike parody, pastiche celebrates, rather than mocks, the work it imitates. Alternately a pastiche may be a hodge-podge of parts derived from the original work of others.
Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is a pastiche because it combines rock with classical music.
This image of a lego version of the Mona Lisa by Marco Pece is an example.
Denotes a technique using generally light hearted. Although its is humourous, it is respectful unlike parody,
