waned in the middle of 20th century when
post modernism came to light
13. Contemporary Arts
art that springs out of the present- day
events and passions of then society
emerged around late 1970’s
with the times (con tempo)
14. Integrative Art
-product of a “crossbreeding” in the
contemporary scene
-a hybrid art since it is interactive and multi-
disciplinary e.g., combination of three
distinct discipline - dance, music, and song in
one production
15. The Subject of Art
Realism – the subject is done the way it
looks
Elements of art: color, shape and form,
value, line
Principle of design: harmony, variety,
proportion
16. Distortion – the artist breaks apart a
subject and rearranges it in a different
manner
Elements of art: color, shape and form,

rhythm, proportion
17. Abstraction – the artist breaks apart a
subject and rearranges it in a different
manner
Elements of art: line, shape and form,
color, value
Principles of design: variety, rhythm,
proportion
18. Non objectivism – there is totally no
subject at all – just an interplay of pure
elements of art
Elements: line, color, shape and form, space
Principles of design: variety, rhythm
19. The Elements of Art
Space – defined as a void, an emptiness which can either be
positive or negative
Positive Space = a space enclosed in a space
Negative Space = denotes the opposite
Line – the extension of a point, a short or long mark drawn
or carved on a surface.

lines
Shape and Form – formed when ends of a line meet. It can
either be geometric (angular) or organic (curvy)

Value – the degree of lightness and darkness of a color
- it is called pitch in music

Texture – is the surface of an artwork which can be
actual or tactile (it can really be felt by touch;) or it can
be simulated or illusory (which means it can only be
seen not felt).
21. Principles of Design
Harmony – refers to the wholeness of the design, the pleasing, arrangement
of parts, and the agreement between parts of a composition, resulting in a

or interpreted

Secondary context - refers to the place and period in which the artist made his work: social, political, economic
environment
Contemporary Art in the Philippines
Influences of the variety of many other art forms here in the Philippines are due to colonial
periods in our history – the Spanish, British, American, and Japanese.
In the late 1980’s post modernism appeared here in our country. Post-modernist believed that artist should no longer
try to create something “new” rather they have to “borrow, combine, explore” what already existed and produce something
new.
This gave birth to integrative art, which is being practiced in the different regions at
present.
