This document discusses food security challenges in Central Asia related to water security and irrigated agriculture. It notes issues like population growth, conflicts over water resources, climate change, and the overexploitation and pollution of water ecosystems. Specifically regarding irrigated agriculture, it highlights problems with poorly operated and maintained canals/infrastructure, limited water measurements, and weak water user associations. It provides examples from Uzbekistan of improving crop patterns and investments to rehabilitate irrigation systems. Finally, it recommends ways the Global Water Partnership could help through policy dialogues, supporting national integrated water resources management plans, capacity building, knowledge sharing, and facilitating partnerships on projects.
