Costume + Props
“A Girls Life”
Our Ideas
Our group has discussed possible ideas for costumes and props. We came to the
conclusion that since our artist is in fact a duo, we wanted to individualise our
female artists rather then giving them the same style and persona. Establishing
equality within the act.
We wanted to create a duo that contrasted against each other but still worked
for our target audience. So we decided as a promotion for the modern day
independent women, we wanted one of our artists to conflict against
stereotypical style already established in the Pop industry (Artist 1). For the
other female we will follow the generic conventions for style within this sub
genre to an extent(Artist 2).
The ideology behind this is to emphasise realism within the artists, and enable
our target audience to relate to one, if not both of the singers. Widening our
target audience, allowing the music video to become more successful.

We don’t need many props for our music video, as we’re going for more
natural scenery that doesn’t require any props.
If we find later on during filming we do need props then we shall note down
the ones we used.
If we don’t own one of the needed
props/costume items?
If we find that we can’t get access to some of the items, then we will go to some
of the local shops in Ludlow (such as Charity shops), and see If we can get it from
there. However the majority of the items we are certain we can get hold of,
which allows us to save money on costume and props, and saves us time going
out and buying them.
It also makes the deadlines more accessible, making us as a group more
organised. Having all the items we need ready to film, allows us to film quickly,
giving the project more time.
All the items have been discussed with the group, so we’ve chosen things that
can represent our genre and appeal to our target audience.
Artists 1 Outfit – Natural setting
For this artist, we’ve chosen a more relaxed style of
simply jeans and a top. This is more casual and
relatable for our audience because despite being casual
it’s popular within mainstream fashion.
This also helps build star image, as the relaxed colour
scheme symbolises that this artist has a chilled
personality and the ‘girl next door’ look.
Also using colours like white, compliments the theme of
light and promotes a fresher look for both the
performers and the Pop genre.
Items like the Flannel will brighten up the artists look
and connote to the audience happiness and hat she is
down to earth. Making her more inspirational for our
audience.
Finally these clothes conflicts with the stereotypical Pop
female artist, and give a new representation of young
females- a positive one. This portrays the message of
independence and self confidence which sometimes
young women struggle with.
Artist 2: Outfit Natural Setting
For this female performer we’ve chosen to follow the
more positive stereotypical representations of females in
the Pop sub-genre.
We’ve chosen to have a skirt that’s quite bright in colour
because that would portray the artists personality – that
they’re fun, and this will also compliment the natural
scenery as the pattern will fit will with the nature setting
of the music video.
The light denim jacket will cohere with the blue jeans of
the other performer, creating a subtle connection,
symbolising that they’re friends despite having appearing
different.
The simplicity of the top and shoes, give her the star
image that she’s a very open artist, and she’s stripped
back to just herself and the music. Giving the artists a
authentic feel to them, which would appeal to our target
audience as it differentiates them from other Pop artists.
Stage setting costumes: Artists 1&2
In this performance element of the music video, both artists will
be more glamorised then in the previous scenes.
The use of dresses and high heels adds a more feminine look to
both artists. We will use colours to portray their different
personalities, creating links to previous scenes, but there will be
a more visual relationship between them then before.
We are using a more glamoures style to create escapism for the
audience. Contrasting to before when they could relate to the
visuals in the video, now they have some distance from them,
which is needed in order for them to aspire towards the
performers. Conveying that anyone can do what they want if thy
really try, as they will see the performers go from casual, to
being Pop stars on the stage performing to their audience/fans.
Hair
For hair in the natural settings, we wanted Artist 1 to have a pony tail, or a roughly
done fishtail braid. This will add to the ‘girl next door’ look and will become
applicable to a lot of girls as it is a fun hairstyle. Again, reinforcing the sense of
realism and our audience being able to relate to them. Also this gives the feel that
the artist is more natural, conveying that they have natural talent. This contrasts with
the usual hairstyle in the pop industry as it is very low key.
Whereas the other performer, will have their hair down, conveying a sense of fun and
freedom. This is typical within the pop genre so is a safe look to appeal to the already
existing audience of Pop.
For the stage scene, both will have their hair down, performer1 more messily and
untouched then performer 2. Still cohering with their individual styles.
Makeup
Natural Scene:
Both artists will have fairly natural makeup, to fit with the simplicity of their
costumes. However the more famine performer may have perhaps more eyeliner
or a more noticeable lipstick on, to correlate with her clothes. Like the rest of
their clothes and hair, this is so the audience can feel like they can relate their
lives to these singers. Which will make them inspired and like them more.
Stage Scene:
In this scene to contrast with their more natural look, they will both have more
of a darker makeup look. Connoting seriousness about their music, and
confidence in how they look and what they’re doing. Conveying a positive
message to their audience about woman empowerment. There will be pops of
makeup however through lipstick and perhaps eyeshadow, to continue the sense
of fun that this music video is all about.
