2. • From my research, I have found the costumes in music videos
play an integral part in the representation of the artist/band.
Many artists, such as Lady Gaga, use there costumes and
makeup to define themselves as a fashion icon. Being a
fashion icon in the music industry has proven to be very
helpful for the increase of profits. It increases the artist(s) as
their own brand and makes them more personal to
consumers.
3. In this narrative, we aimed to capture the contrast between the
character/mood when putting on makeup and when in the naturalistic field. To
emphasise the themes of pressure and conforming in the mirror scene, we
decided on a heavy and glamorous makeup look which would be achieved near
the end of the music video. To compliment this, we also structured a more ‘put
together’ outfit which indicates the characters will for perfection.
Vs.
4. This character had one costume as wanted to mislead the audience into
thinking they were reminiscing a former relationship but really they
were waiting for another person. The costume was simple and that
expected of a youthful and casual person.
5. Again, for this character we only required one costume. Although
similar ages, we wanted some difference in style to give the characters
more identity. Obviously, we had to have a striking contrast between
the elder character and the young one. Because we knew our actors
and their styles, we told Hannah (seen in the photo) to where a usual
outfit as we knew it would relate to our target audience. We also told
the mother of the younger actor to dress in her normal clothes as we
only wanted to portray a youthful image.
6. For the shots of the characters lip-syncing. We asked the actors to wear
clothes they would in their normal routine. Although some could
criticise this as not striding to achieve the best representation of each
character; we thought that our ‘indie’ target audience which was
primarily aged 16-24 would relate more to the characters if they were
presented as their true selves. If we were to construct an outfit, it could
potentially look too precise and almost false. However, in major artist(s)
videos, we appreciate the importance of constructing costumes. But we
aim to sell our band as an independent and unique brand; or even as
just a band who produces music. A concept dwindling in the current
times, but still vastly appreciated among audiences.
