INTRODUCTION
Coriander (Dhaniya), Coriandrum sativum L, is an annual herbal indipensible spice in
the family Apiaceous. Both leaves and seeds of the plant are of commercial
importance. Leaves being highly perishable are used for fresh consumption
therefore, marketed in areas near to production site. Leaves and seeds are
processed for value added products for higher commercial value. Largest producer
of coriander seed in the country is Rajasthan accounting for about 58% followed by
Madhya Pradesh with about 15%, Assam and Gujarat with 8% each , Orissa,
Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka (2 – 3.5 %). India is the largest
producer (585 thousand tonnes) of coriander seed and also the largest exporter
valued at Rs 2937 million (NHB 2017). The major varieties cultivated in India are
Gujarat Coriander-1, GujaratCoriander-2, RCr-41, UD-20, Rajendra Swati (RD-44),
CS-287, CO-1, CO-2, CO-3, Sadhana, Swati and Sindhu.
Dry seeds of coriander contain essential oils and oil which are used in
confectionary, pharmaceutical industry Green leaves are good source of Vitamin C
and are used for making chutney, soups and sauces, etc. Coriander also has good
medicinal value.
Coriander is cultivated on raised bed, in furrows or on flat surface. The seed rate
varies from 20 to 25 kg / ha. The seeds are split into two halves by rubbing and
soaked in water for 12 to 24 hours before sowing for better germination. The seeds
are sown in rows spaced at 30 to 40 cm apart with 15 cm between hills. Soil depth
should not exceed 3.0 cm. Germination takes place in 10 to 15 days. The crop
matures in 175-180 days and yields about 875 kg seeds / hectare. Green leaves
can give four cuts which is started when crop attains a height of about 20 - 25 cm
height . For seed purpose, harvest is done when capsule gets matured and start
changing colour from green to brown. Over ripe capsule fetch lower price. After
harvest the crop is dried in sunlight for 6-7 days before threshing. Harvested plants
are dried under sun for 1-2 days to bring the moisture levels down to 18-20%. This
dried plant is then thrashed to remove the seeds. Seeds are further dried under
shade to bring the moisture levels down to 8-10%. The produce is winnowed,
cleaned and dried in partial shade. After drying, the produce is stored in gunny bags
lined with paper.
