Contextual Teaching and
       Learning
•Definition of CTL
• …is a conception of teaching and learning that
  helps teachers relate subject matter content
  to real world situations; and motivates
  students to make connections between
  knowledge and its applications to their lives as
  family members, citizens, workers and engage
  in the hard work that learning requires.
• The goal and effect of a contextualized
  approach is to capture a student’s attention by
  illustrating the relevance of learning
  experiences.

 Project Guidelines:

 1. Students write five occupation-related articles in English.

 2. Students are assigned to groups of four per journal.
•From the illustration, CTL is Not:

1. a lecturer-only method of teaching,
2. busy-work or activity for activity sake,
3. doing the questions at the end of the
   chapter,
4. rote memorization,
5. teacher dominated goal-setting,
6. paper and pencil tests.
• Contextual learning occurs only when
  students process new information or
  knowledge in such a way that it makes sense
  to the in thir own frames of references.
Learning Theories that support CTL are:

•   Motivation Theory
•   Problem-Centered Learning
•   Social Learning Theory
•   Learning Styles
•   Brain Reseatch
Motivation Theory
• According to Harris, “ The basic format of
  andragogical model is a process design that uses
  life experiences.”

• Svinicki suggest that instructor address the
  following issues:
1. Increase the value of the learning to the learner
2. Increase the learner’s self-efficacy with regard to
   the task.
Problem-Centered Learning
• It address students’ engagement with real-
  world problem-solving to develop a “dee[-
  foundation of factual knowledge and
  understand that knowledge in the context of a
  conceptual framework, and finally to facilitate
  the development of metacognitive skills.
