Content based image retrieval using error diffusion block truncation coding features

This document describes a content-based image retrieval system using features extracted from error diffusion block truncation coding (EDBTC). EDBTC produces color quantizers and a bitmap image, which are vector quantized to generate features for image matching - a color histogram feature and a bit pattern histogram feature. These features are used to measure similarity between a query image and images in a database. The proposed approach outperforms other content-based image retrieval methods on natural and textural image datasets. Hardware and software requirements for implementing the system are also provided, along with the project workflow.

Diffusion Block Truncation Coding Features
Abstract—This paper presents a new approach to index color images using the
features extracted from the error diffusion block truncation coding (EDBTC). The
EDBTC produces two color quantizers and a bitmap image, which are further
processed using vector quantization (VQ) to generate the image feature descriptor.
Herein two features are introduced, namely, color histogram feature (CHF) and bit
pattern histogram feature (BHF), to measure the similarity between a query image
and the target image in database. The CHF and BHF are computed from the VQ-
indexed color quantizer and VQ-indexed bitmap image, respectively. The distance
computed from CHF and BHF can be utilized to measure the similarity between
two images. As documented in the experimental result, the proposed indexing
method outperforms the former block truncation coding based image indexing and
the other existing image retrieval schemes with natural and textural data sets. Thus,
the proposed EDBTC is not only examined with good capability for image
compression but also offers an effective way to index images for the contentbased
image retrieval system.

Our goal of the project is to develop a complete, fully detailed 3D interactive model of the human body and systems in the human body, and allow the user to interacts in 3D with all the elements of that system, to teach students about human anatomy. Some organs, which contain a lot of details about a particular anatomy, need to be accurately and fully described in minute detail, such as the brain, lungs, liver and heart. These organs are need have all the detailed descriptions of the medical information needed to learn how to do surgery on them, and should allow the user to add careful and precise marking to indicate the operative landmarks on the surgery location. Adding so many different items of information is challenging when the area to which the information needs to be attached is very detailed and overlaps with all kinds of other medical information related to the area. Existing methods to tag areas was not allowing us sufficient locations to attach the information to. Our solution combines a variety of tagging methods, which use the marking method by selecting the RGB color area that is drawn in the texture, on the complex 3D object structure. Then, it relies on those RGB color codes to tag IDs and create relational tables that store the related information about the specific areas of the anatomy. With this method of marking, it is possible to use the entire set of color values (R, G, B) to identify a set of anatomic regions, and this also makes it possible to define multiple overlapping regions.

Content based image retrieval based on shape with texture features

This document describes a content-based image retrieval system that extracts shape and texture features from images. It uses the HSV color space and wavelet transform for feature extraction. Color features are extracted by quantizing the H, S, and V components of HSV into unequal intervals based on human color perception. Texture features are extracted using wavelet transforms. The color and texture features are then combined to form a feature vector for each image. During retrieval, the similarity between a query image and images in the database is measured using the Euclidean distance between their feature vectors. The results show that retrieving images using HSV color features provides more accurate results and faster retrieval times compared to using RGB color features.

Abstract:This paper is based on Bangla Optical Digit Recognition (ODR) by the Edge detection technique. In this method, Bangla digit image converted into gray-scale which distributed by an M by N array form. Here input data are considered off-line printed digit’s image which collected from computer generated image, scanned documents or printed text. After addressing the gray-scale image against a variable in the form of an M by N array, where the value of array pointers are shown 255 for total white space, 0 (zero) for total dark space and value between 255 and 0 for mix of white and dark space of the image. At the next process, four edgestouch points as well as each touch point’s ratio use as parameters to determine each Bangla digit uniquely. Keywords-Edge, image,gray-scale, Matrix,ODR.

Content-based Image Retrieval Using The knowledge of Color, Texture in Binary...

This document presents a new approach for content-based image retrieval that combines color, texture, and a binary tree structure to describe images and their features. Color histograms in HSV color space and wavelet texture features are extracted as low-level features. A binary tree partitions each image into regions based on color and represents higher-level spatial relationships. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated on a subset of the COREL image database and compared to the SIMPLIcity image retrieval system. Experimental results show the proposed system has better retrieval performance than SIMPLIcity in some categories and comparable performance in others.

This document summarizes an evaluation of texture feature extraction methods for content-based image retrieval, including co-occurrence matrices, Tamura features, and Gabor filters. The evaluation tested these methods on a Corel image collection using Manhattan distance as the similarity measure. Co-occurrence matrices performed best with homogeneity as the feature, while Gabor wavelets showed better performance for homogeneous textures of fixed sizes. Tamura features performed poorly with directionality. Overall, co-occurrence matrices provided the best results for general texture retrieval.

This document proposes a new object recognition system using Hausdorff distance. The system aims to improve on existing methods like YOLO that struggle with small objects and can capture garbage data. The document outlines preprocessing steps like noise cancellation, representing shapes as point sets, and extracting features. It then describes using Hausdorff distance and shape context to find the best match between input and reference shapes. Testing on datasets showed encouraging results for recognizing handwritten digits.

Basic group of visual techniques such as color, shape, texture are used in Content Based Image Retrievals (CBIR) to retrieve query image or sub region of image to find similar images in image database. To improve query result, relevance feedback is used many times in CBIR to help user to express their preference and improve query results. In this paper, a new approach for image retrieval is proposed which is based on the features such as Color Histogram, Eigen Values and Match Point. Images from various types of database are first identified by using edge detection techniques .Once the image is identified, then the image is searched in the particular database, then all related images are displayed. This will save the retrieval time. Further to retrieve the precise query image, any of the three techniques are used and comparison is done w.r.t. average retrieval time. Eigen value technique found to be the best as compared with other two techniques.

Semantic annotation of images is an important research topic on both image understanding and database or web image search. Image annotation is a technique to choosing appropriate labels for images with extracting effective and hidden feature in pictures. In the feature extraction step of proposed method, we present a model, which combined effective features of visual topics (global features over an image) and regional contexts (relationship between the regions in Image and each other regions images) to automatic image annotation.In the annotation step of proposed method, we create a new ontology (base on WordNet ontology) for the semantic relationships between tags in the classification and improving semantic gap exist in the automatic image annotation.Experiments result on the 5k Corel dataset show the proposed method of image annotation in addition to reducing the complexity of the classification, increased accuracy compared to the another methods.

K2 Algorithm-based Text Detection with An Adaptive Classifier Threshold

In natural scene images, text detection is a challenging study area for dissimilar content-based image analysis tasks. In this paper, a Bayesian network scores are used to classify candidate character regions by computing posterior probabilities. The posterior probabilities are used to define an adaptive threshold to detect text in scene images with accuracy. Therefore, candidate character regions are extracted through maximally stable extremal region. K2 algorithm-based Bayesian network scores are learned by evaluating dependencies amongst features of a given candidate character region. Bayesian logistic regression classifier is trained to compute posterior probabilities to define an adaptive classifier threshold. The candidate character regions below from adaptive classifier threshold are discarded as non-character regions. Finally, text regions are detected with the use of effective text localization scheme based on geometric features. The entire system is evaluated on the ICDAR 2013 competition database. Experimental results produce competitive performance (precision, recall and harmonic mean) with the recently published algorithms.

Unethical uses of data hiding methods have made Image Steganalysis a very important area of research work in the field of Digital Investigations. Effectiveness of any Image Steganalysis algorithm depends on feature selection and feature reduction. The goal of this paper is to develop a reduced dimensional merged feature set for universal image steganalysis using Fisher Criterion and ANOVA techniques. Statistical features extracted from wavelet subbands and binary similarity patterns extracted from DCT of an image are merged to make combined feature set. Fisher criterion and ANOVA test are applied to evaluate the combined feature vector score and then only those features are selected which are found sensitive in both feature selection methods. These reduced dimensional 15-D feature vector is used to train SVM classifier with RBF kernel. The proposed algorithm is tested against steganography methods like F5, Outguess and LSB based method. Stego images are generated using widely available stego tools for two standard image databases: CorelDraw and BSDS500. Results are further validated using 10 fold cross validation process. The proposed algorithm achieves overall 97% detection accuracy against various steganography methods

Already there are many hashing techniques are present for retrieval of an image in a large databank. The hashing technique can be done on images by considering the high dimensional descriptor of an image but in the existing hashing techniques single dimensional descriptor is used from this the performance of the probability of distribution of an image search will not achieve as expected. And the drawback is that giving the query input in a texture format leads to the limitations of image search that is firstly due to the limited keyword and the second is Annotation approach by human is ambiguous and incomplete. To overcome from these drawbacks a new technique has been proposed named as Multiview Alignment Hashing technique in which it keeps the high dimensional feature descriptor data as well probability of distribution of an images in a database. Along with the Multiview feature descriptor another technique can be used that is Nonnegetive Matrix Factorization (NMF). NMF is a popular technique used in data mining in which clustering of a data will be takes place by considering only the non- negative matrix value.

Segmentation of medical images using metric topology – a region growing approach

A metric topological approach to the region growing based segmentation is presented in this article. Region based growing techniques has gained a significant importance in the medical image processing field for finest of segregation of tumor detected part in the image. Conventional algorithms were concentrated on segmentation at the coarser level which failed to produce enough evidence for the validity of the algorithm. In this article a novel technique is proposed based on metric topological neighbourhood also with the introduction of new objective measure entropy, apart from the traditional validity measures of Accuracy, PSNR and MSE. This measure is introduced to prove the amount of information lost after segmentation is reduced to greater extent which elucidates the effectiveness of the algorithm. This algorithm is tested on the well known benchmarking of testing in ground truth images in par with the proposed region based growing segmented images. The results validated show the validation of effectiveness of the algorithm.

The color image segmentation is one of most crucial application in image processing. It can apply to medical image segmentation for a brain tumor and skin cancer detection or color object detection on CCTV traffic video image segmentation and also for face recognition, fingerprint recognition etc. The color image segmentation has faced the problem of multidimensionality. The color image is considered in five-dimensional problems, three dimensions in color (RGB) and two dimensions in geometry (luminosity layer and chromaticity layer). In this paper the, L*a*b color space conversion has been used to reduce the one dimensional and geometrically it converts in the array hence the further one dimension has been reduced. The a*b space is clustered using genetic algorithm process, which minimizes the overall distance of the cluster, which is randomly placed at the start of the segmentation process. The segmentation results of this method give clear segments based on the different color and it can be applied to any application.

Image hashing is an efficient way to handle digital data authentication problem. Image hashing represents quality summarization of image features in compact manner. In this paper, the modified center symmetric local binary pattern (CSLBP) image hashing algorithm is proposed. Unlike CSLBP 16 bin histogram, Modified CSLBP generates 8 bin histogram without compromise on quality to generate compact hash. It has been found that, uniform quantization on a histogram with more bin results in more precision loss. To overcome quantization loss, modified CSLBP generates the two histogram of a four bin. Uniform quantization on a 4 bin histogram results in less precision loss than a 16 bin histogram. The first generated histogram represents the nearest neighbours and second one is for the diagonal neighbours. To enhance quality in terms of discrimination power, different weight factor are used during histogram generation. For the nearest and the diagonal neighbours, two local weight factors are used. One is the Standard Deviation (SD) and other is the Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG). Standard deviation represents a spread of data which captures local variation from mean. LoG is a second order derivative edge detection operator which detects edges well in presence of noise. The proposed algorithm is resilient to the various kinds of attacks. The proposed method is tested on database having malicious and non-malicious images using benchmark like NHD and ROC which confirms theoretical analysis. The experimental results shows good performance of the proposed method for various attacks despite the short hash length.

This document describes an implementation of fuzzy logic for high-resolution remote sensing image classification with improved accuracy. It discusses using an object-based approach with fuzzy rules to classify urban land covers in a satellite image. The approach involves image segmentation using k-means clustering or ISODATA clustering. Features are then extracted from the image objects and fuzzy logic is applied to classify the objects based on membership functions. The method was tested on different sensor and resolution images in MATLAB and showed improved classification accuracy over other techniques, achieving lower entropy in results. Future work planned includes designing an unsupervised classification model combining k-means clustering and fuzzy-based object orientation.

This document discusses feature extraction methods for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). It describes Order Dither Block Truncation Coding (ODBTC), an image compression technique that can be used to extract image features without decoding. The proposed CBIR system extracts two features from ODBTC-encoded images: Color Co-occurrence Feature (CCF) and Bit Pattern Feature (BPF). CCF is extracted from color quantizers produced by ODBTC, while BPF is based on a bit pattern codebook generated from ODBTC bitmap images. Experimental results show this approach provides superior retrieval accuracy compared to earlier CBIR methods.

The system extracts two image features - color co-occurrence features and bit pattern features - directly from the encoded image data to represent images. Experiments show the system retrieves similar images with promising accuracy compared to other methods. The system decomposes images into color quantizers and bitmaps using ordered-dither block truncation coding for low complexity feature extraction to represent images in the database. Queries return similar images based on similarity distances between feature vectors.

This paper presents a new halftoning-based block truncation coding (HBTC) image reconstruction using sparse representation framework. The HBTC is a simple yet powerful image compression technique, which can effectively remove the typical blocking effect and false contour. Two types of HBTC methods are discussed in this paper, i.e., ordered dither block truncation coding (ODBTC) and error diffusion block truncation coding (EDBTC). The proposed sparsity-based method suppresses the impulsive noise on ODBTC and EDBTC decoded image with a coupled dictionary containing the HBTC image component and the clean image component dictionaries. Herein, a sparse coefficient is estimated from the HBTC decoded image by means of the HBTC image dictionary. The reconstructed image is subsequently built and aligned from the clean, i.e. non-compressed image dictionary and predicted sparse coefficient. To further reduce the blocking effect, the image patch is firstly identified as “border” and “non-border” type before applying the sparse representation framework. Adding the Laplacian prior knowledge on HBTC decoded image, it yields better reconstructed image quality. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed HBTC image reconstruction. The proposed method also outperforms the former schemes in terms of reconstructed image quality.

This document presents a content-based image retrieval system that uses color and texture features. It uses a K-nearest neighbor classifier to classify images based on color features and extract texture features using log-Gabor filters. Images are then ranked based on their similarity to the query image using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. The system is tested on a dataset of flag images to retrieve the most similar flags to a given query image based on color and texture features. Experimental results show that the combined approach of using classification, similarity measures and log-Gabor filtering for color and texture features provides better retrieval performance than methods using only wavelets or Gabor filters.

The content based image retrieval (CBIR) technique is one of the most popular and evolving research areas of the digital image processing. The goal of CBIR is to extract visual content like colour, texture or shape, of an image automatically. This paper proposes an image retrieval method that uses colour and texture for feature extraction. This system uses the query by example model. The system allows user to choose the feature on the basis of which retrieval will take place. For the retrieval based on colour feature, RGB and HSV models are taken into consideration. Whereas for texture the GLCM is used for extracting the textural features which then goes into Vector Quantization phase to speed up the retrieval process.

This document describes a system for image retrieval and annotation using both image content and tags. The system builds a unified graph fusing an image similarity graph based on visual features with an image-tag bipartite graph. It uses a combination of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) and text-based image retrieval (TBIR) with a fusion parameter to balance the influence of image contents and tags. The system is able to retrieve images related to a query as well as annotate the query image. It extracts color, shape, and texture features from images and combines these features for matching between database images and queries.

In this paper, we present a novel approach for image retrieval based on extraction of low level features using techniques such as Directional Binary Code (DBC), Haar Wavelet transform and Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). The DBC texture descriptor captures the spatial relationship between any pair of neighbourhood pixels in a local region along a given direction, while Local Binary Patterns (LBP) descriptor considers the relationship between a given pixel and its surrounding neighbours. Therefore, DBC captures more spatial information than LBP and its variants, also it can extract more edge information than LBP. Hence, we employ DBC technique in order to extract grey level texture features (texture map) from each RGB channels individually and computed texture maps are further combined which represents colour texture features (colour texture map) of an image. Then, we decomposed the extracted colour texture map and original image using Haar wavelet transform. Finally, we encode the shape and local features of wavelet transformed images using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) for content based image retrieval. The performance of proposed method is compared with existing methods on two databases such as Wang’s corel image and Caltech 256. The evaluation results show that our approach outperforms the existing methods for image retrieval.

The aim of this paper is to present a comparative s tudy of two linear dimension reduction methods namely PCA (Principal Component Analysis) a nd LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis). The main idea of PCA is to transform the high dimen sional input space onto the feature space where the maximal variance is displayed. The featur e selection in traditional LDA is obtained by maximizing the difference between classes and mi nimizing the distance within classes. PCA finds the axes with maximum variance for the whole data set where LDA tries to find the axes for best class seperability. The proposed method is experimented over a general image database using Matlab. The performance of these systems has been evaluated by Precision and Recall measures. Experimental results show that PCA based dimension reduction method gives the better performance in terms of higher precision and recall values with lesser computational complexity than the LDA based method.

Face recognition system in real time is divided into three processes, namely feature extraction, clustering, detection, and recognition. Each of these stages uses different methods, Local Binary Pattern (LBP), Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) and Euclidean Distance. Multi-face image search using Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) method. CBIR performs image search by image feature itself. Based on real time trial results, the accuracy value obtained is 61.64%.

Self-Directing Text Detection and Removal from Images with Smoothing

This document presents a method for self-directing text detection and removal from images using smoothing and exemplar-based inpainting (TLES+EBI). It introduces the problem of existing text detection systems requiring technical skills and outlines objectives to improve automaticity and visually plausible region filling. The methodology applies L0 gradient minimization smoothing to text detection, followed by exemplar-based inpainting for hole filling. Experimental results show smoothing improves detection rates while exemplar-based inpainting decreases MSE and increases PSNR compared to other methods. The document concludes the approach achieves better text detection and visually plausible region filling.

A Hybrid Approach for Content Based Image Retrieval System

This document describes a hybrid approach for content-based image retrieval. It combines several spatial features - row sum, column sum, forward and backward diagonal sums - and histograms to represent images with feature vectors. Euclidean distance is used to calculate similarity between a query image's feature vector and those in the database. The approach is evaluated using precision-recall calculations on different image groups, showing the hybrid method performs best by combining multiple features.

The aim of this paper is to present a comparative study of two linear dimension reduction methods namely PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis). The main idea of PCA is to transform the high dimensional input space onto the feature space where the maximal variance is displayed. The feature selection in traditional LDA is obtained by maximizing the difference between classes and minimizing the distance within classes. PCA finds the axes with maximum variance for the whole data set where LDA tries to find the axes for best class seperability. The neural network is trained about the reduced feature set (using PCA or LDA) of images in the database for fast searching of images from the database using back propagation algorithm. Improving Performance of Multileveled BTC Based CBIR Using Sundry Color Spaces

The paper presents an extension of content based image retrieval (CBIR) techniques based on multilevel Block Truncation Coding (BTC) using nine sundry color spaces. Block truncation coding based features is one of the CBIR methods proposed using color features of image. The approach basically considers red, green and blue planes of an image to compute feature vector. This BTC based CBIR can be extended as multileveled BTC for performance improvement in image retrieval. The paper extends the multileveled BTC using RGB color space to other nine color spaces. The CBIR techniques like BTC Level-1, BTC Level-2, BTC Level-3 and BTC Level-4 are applied using various color spaces to analyze and compare their performances. The CBIR techniques are tested on generic image database of 1000 images spread across 11 categories. For each CBIR technique, 55 queries (5 per category) are fired on extended Wang generic image database to compute average precision and recall for all queries. The results have shown the performance improvement (ie., higher precision and recall values) with BTC-CBIR methods using luminance-chrominance color spaces (YCgCb, Kekre’s LUV, YUV, YIQ, YCbCr) as compared to non-luminance (RGB, HSI, HSV, rgb , XYZ) Color spaces. The performance of multileveled BTC-CBIR increases gradually with increase in level up to certain extent (Level 3) and then increases slightly due to voids being created at higher levels. In all levels of BTC Kekre’s LUV color space gives best performance

Web Image Retrieval Using Visual Dictionary

In this research, we have proposed semantic based image retrieval system to retrieve set of relevant images for the given query image from the Web. We have used global color space model and Dense SIFT feature extraction technique to generate visual dictionary using proposed quantization algorithm. The images are transformed into set of features. These features are used as inputs in our proposed Quantization algorithm for generating the code word to form visual dictionary. These codewords are used to represent images semantically to form visual labels using Bag-of-Features (BoF). The Histogram intersection method is used to measure the distance between input image and the set of images in the image database to retrieve similar images. The experimental results are evaluated over a collection of 1000 generic Web images to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.
