Requesting to Connect on LinkedIn
What is the
connection
message?
It is the first message you
can optionally send to
someone simultaneously
with the request
EX: Friend request w/ note
• Include a connection message when requesting
to connect

• Mutual contact name

• Say who/what you’re looking for up front

• “I (wrote a book) and my team identified you as
somebody who might be interested in these
ideas.

• Ask (would you be open to connecting? We’re
both directors in the marketing industry)

• Examples:

• “You run a business in NY so I wanted to
connect”

• Be irrelevant (bad auto targeting)

• Use smiley faces

• Be obvious (we don’t know each other but…”

• say “the industry” “made sense for us to
connect”

• “I came across your profile and would love to
learn about what you do?” (not specific)

• Hey NAME, I’d like to connect as I’m looking for speak with a real estate
professional

• Hey NAME, I starting a webinar series (for free) and my team identified you as
someone who might be interested. It will be about XYZ

• Hey NAME, would you be open to connecting. I post daily video and written
content aimed towards Realtors with tips on how they can get leads, and I’m
trying to increase my “view” engagement. Win Win.
