Confucianism developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius and focused on ethical and harmonious social relationships. It can be seen as a code of conduct describing how one should act according to their relationship with others. Confucianism also believes that humans are fundamentally good and can improve themselves through self-cultivation. The core virtues are ren (benevolence), yi (righteousness), li (propriety), zhi (wisdom), and xin (fidelity) and shape the five constant relationships between ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, older and younger brother, and older and younger friend.
