Introduction: Defining and
Understanding Air Compressors
While there is no particular definition of an air compressor, they
can be defined as mechanical devices that works to produce
kinetic energy.
Applications of Air Compressors
There are innumerable applications of air compressors out of which a
few are mentioned as follows:
Operating pneumatic tools : drills, screw drivers, hammers etc.
For pneumatic cranes and automobiles, railways and presses
For dusters and sprayers that are used in agriculture
CNC machine tools
Functioning of Air Compressor
 Air is compressed and stored inside the air receiver.
 The function of the air compressor is to reduce volume
and induce pressure in the compressed air.
 The main function of the compress is to convert electric
energy into kinetic energy.
Types of Air Compressors
1. Reciprocating or Piston Compressors
2. Rotary Sliding Vane Compressors
3. Rotary Screw Compressors
4. Centrifugal Compressors
Reciprocating or Piston Compressors
1. Compresses gas using a piston which is driven
inside in a reciprocal way.
2. The gas or the air enters and is stored in a
pressurized cylinder
3. Later, the gas or is released through valves.
Rotary Sliding Vane Compressors
Comprises a cylinder that is placed inside a water jacketed
cylinder.
The rotor forces the air against the wall thereby
compressing the air and releasing it afterwards.
Rotary Screw Compressors
This type of compressor uses 2 rotors, out of which one is male and
one is female.
Centrifugal Compressors
Also known as radical compressors, these comprise of pumps,
blowers and fans.
