Sample Lit Review on Hypertension
2. Literature review
This chapter reviews the literature on hypertension and hyperlipidaemia and their relation to risk
factors including age, gender, genetics, diet and weight, alcohol, smoking, lack of activity and co
morbidity. It also examines mediating factors including economic factors, stress/personality,
medications, lifestyle modifications and complementary therapies including foot reflexology and
foot massage. Finally, it reviews outcomes (quality of life) including physiological, psychological
and socioeconomic changes.
2.1 Background to the literature review
The occurrence of hypertension, a chronic condition, is increasing in developing countries such as
Thailand due to the sociological, political and economic changes and the ... Show more content on

The results showed that patients aged 65 years or over had a higher mean systolic and lower
mean diastolic blood pressure (p 0.001) in the office than those aged less than 65 years. Office
mean arterial blood pressures were also higher (p 0.001) in the older patients. For mean ambulatory
blood pressure, older patients had higher mean ambulatory systolic blood pressures than the
younger age group, but there were no differences in mean ambulatory diastolic blood pressure
between the two groups. Men had higher mean ambulatory diastolic and mean arterial blood
26
pressures than women; however, women had higher systolic (p 0.008) and mean arterial office
blood pressures than men (Khoury et al 1992).
A similar result was gained in a study of 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in 352
healthy Danish subjects aged 20 to 79 years. These participants were divided into groups of 25
to 30 subjects, of each sex, across all age groups. Blood pressure monitoring was measured on
the left arm every 15 minutes from 7am to 11pm and every 30 minutes from 11pm to 7am. The
study found that systolic blood pressure increased only slightly with age and was significantly
higher in men than in women. On the other hand, the diastolic blood pressure increased only
slightly with age in both sexes until the 50 to 59 years age group, declined thereafter and was not
statistically different between sexes (Wiinberg et al 1995).

Pixar Changing The Overall Feeling For Animation Forever
Pixar changed animation forever by introducing new ideas and changing the overall feel for
animation forever. One very important trend that Pixar started was the actual slowing down of a
movies narrative. Previously, before Pixar, animated movies such as Aladdin or even Beauty and
The Beast, both made by Disney, were both very rapidly paced, along with most other animated
movie prior to Pixar. Most companies did this because they considered their audiences to be an
extremely impatient bunch, specifically children. Pixar however, disproved this theory with Up,
Wall E, and many others. Pixar knew the value of temporarily slowing down a movies narrative.
Pixar had faith that it s audience, including children, would not lose interest during... Show more

As time can tell, it was a safe bet, by the time the credits of Toy Story began to roll the first day,
the movies would never be the same (Zorthian). Toy Story grossed a total of $191,796,233 at the
box office in The United States alone, it was the highest selling film for three weeks in a row. As the
first full length, 3D computer animated movie, it was a milestone for animation, possibly the most
significant since the introduction of color. Most critics however, glossed over this achievement,
which was actually exactly what the developers were hoping for. The critics were actually
thrilled at the invisibility of the work. The film even won an academy award for Special
Achievement, also including nominations for best original screenplay, score, and song. The
foundation that was set by Toy Story had effects far beyond the franchise. Pixar, which Disney
officially acquired in 2006, has released 15 movies since then, this includes 26 Academy Awards
and three Grammy s in total. There have been more than 250 computer animated films released
world wide since Toy Story. John Lasseter, current chief creative officer of Pixar and Disney,
attributes that plentitude in part to the choice by the Toy Story team to worry about the story more
than showing off, and to concentrate on developing software to serve their ideas, rather than the
other way around. Lasseter even states, if Toy Story had not succeeded the way it did, it might not

The Futility Of Global Thinking
It s Your Decision: Concepts from The Futility of Global Thinking In The Futility of Global
Thinking writer Wendell Berry gives the people of the next generation advice on the problems
they may come in contact with, now that they re on their own. Berry goes into great detail
explaining what problems to look out for and what ideas to avoid when faced with a problem. He
is trying to help steer the next generation away from the mistakes previous generations have made
so they can truly make their own decision in how their lives are going to play out. One thing
Wendell Berry wants these graduates, the next generation, to avoid is not to make the mistake of
mislabeling things as planetary . One example he uses is how the environmental... Show more

In The Futility of Global Thinking, Berry kind of comes to the big corporations defense. He uses
the example of William Sound where, essentially, he says that it wasn t just big corporations that
put William Sound into one ship, the consumers demand for cheap and plentiful energy helped
guide their hand. Berry is trying to prevent the new generation from making the same mistake
previous generation have made, falsely dividing the world between the guilty producers and the
innocent consumers. If we as the consumer only see the problem as the producers (i.e. big
corporations) then we will not change our own behaviors and nothing will actually be solved.
This is what Berry was trying to get these graduates to understand. Continuing on the topic of
problems remaining unsolved, Berry mentions the reality of how people solve their problems.
And the reality of it is, people don t solve their problems. He points out the fact that a lot of
people do talk about their problems, and even talk about solving them. But that is all they do.
Berry words it as follows, though we have been talking about most of our problems for decades,
we are still mainly talking about them. This I agree with. People always talk about how they will
do something or change something, but when it actually comes down to it they do nothing about it.
I mentioned this in an earlier paper about cocoa farmers. There was this

Impact of Geography in Richard Russo s Novels Essay
Richard Russo s novels Empire Falls and Nobody s Fool examine the relationships between
individuals in a small town environment. In Empire Falls, Miles Roby and his family have
stayed in Empire Falls for much of their life with no foreseeable change in the future. In Nobody
s Fool, Donald Sully Sullivan has lived in North Bath, NY since he was a child and seems to have
deteriorated with the town. In both novels, the towns have declining economic prospects and the
residents have little engagement with happenings outside their towns. The landlocked geography
of Empire Falls, ME and North Bath, NY has a profound impact on each character s ability to
evolve personally and intellectually. Empire Falls is located several hours from a major... Show

Miles comes home with the promise of financial assistance for his mother from Francine

would [run the Empire Grill] for a year or so, and she would ensure Grace would get the care she
needed. However, after his mother dies, Mrs. Whiting changed the bait, promising that he ll

town with few prospects (Prager 256). In small geographical regions, proprietors like Francine
are able to purchase large amounts of land and control entire areas. Miles falls victim to Francine
who successfully controls him and the town. Francine also exerts influence over town police
officer Jimmy Minty: When people look at Jimmy, they see someone who reassures them that
trying to escape the provincial life isn t worth the trouble. This is why he feels comfortable with
most of the town s citizens and vice versa (Allen 259). Hypnotized by Francine Whiting s powers,
Jimmy acts as her henchman. The isolated nature of the town prevents the citizens from seeing the
reality of the situation a crooked cop who is stuck in Empire

Impact of agile software development approach on industry Comparison of different agile methods
and their applicability
Today when the software industry is progressing rapidly, software usage and demand is
expanding. Software development is going to be more complex day by day. Changes
requirements from the customers make it more difficult and complex. Old approaches of software
development are no more useful in present scenario. They are not able to satisfy customers needs
in given time [1]. As a result new approaches and methodologies are bringing evolved. These new
approaches have more helpful to make a productive and flexible product. In modern research, to

There are a number of software engineers who advocate this approach and there are huge software
development organizations that prefer agile approach to use than other traditional methodologies.
According to Andrew Begel and Nachiappan Nagappan [2] from more than two decade agile
software methodology is gaining acceptance by the professionals since 1990. Due to fast changing
technology, common customer can not define his needs properly. New approaches and
methodologies were needed able to define changing requirements properly. Traditional methods
such as waterfall model are not able to deal with real ways software engineering functions in
software development. Some group of software consultants signed the agile SD manifesto in 2001.
This was the era when agile software development was basically emerged. Main benefit of this
approach is to promote and develop the response and speed of software development to change
the requirement as well as deadlines [3] [4]. There are many agile methods used in agile software
methods. The most known method is extreme programming generally called XP. Some others are
Dynamic Software Development Methods DSDN, Scrum and Crystal. These mentioned methods
can be considered as a new idea plan that is based on the traditional methods. Basic description of

The Old Gringo, Carlos Fuentes The Old Gringo is a fiction novel written by one of Latin America
#8217;s most renowned and eloquent authors, Carlos Fuentes. Filled with war, adventure, love and
more, this novel takes you back to the Mexican revolution fought in 1912. This contemporary
fiction is based on many themes found and experienced by the main characters in this novel. The
relationship between Mexicoand the United States, the drive to find one #8217;s true self and the
different ways two men need a woman are only a few themes contained in this story. The question:
Is he Ambrose Bierce or just an old gringo, is one that I had to answer while reading this book. We

In this novel, Miss Harriet has an affair with Tomas Arroyo to save the old gringo#8217;s life.
Supposedly, Arroyo claimed that he would kill the gringo unless she slept with him. At the end
of the story, Harriet despises Tomas Arroyo for everything he does and learns to love the old
gringo as a father. The old gringo is a very mysterious, adventure and death seeking character. He
comes to Mexico in search of death, hoping that he could just die in the battlefield. We learn that
he had his own family, but all were dead or wanted nothing to do with him. He was a bitter
American journalist who had made an abrupt break with his past and is riding into Mexico to
join Pancho Villa #8217;s revolutionary army. Clues suggest that if this man were ever named
he would prove to be Ambrose Bierce, an American journalist, who vanished from the United
States into Mexico during 1913. In the end of this story, he is killed by Tomas Arroyo and is
taken back into the U.S. to be buried in Miss Harriet #8217;s father #8217;s empty grave in
Arlington. This character was very well respected for his bravery shown in the field and his
special qualities that made Miss Harriet love him so much. Tomas Arroyo is the man who is

There s A Certain Slant Of Light And William Blake s London
Emily Dickinson s There s a certain slant of light and William Blake s London are two poems
that contain the same theme about despair, yet express that theme very differently. Both poems
contain the theme about how despair causes people to be trapped in a constant cycle of pain and
loss, and that there is no way to break this cycle. The way that the author expresses this theme is
very different. Dickinson s poem presents despair that seems to come from heaven, and with this
despair her life has no meaning. Blake s poem presents despair only through people in society,
and that despair comes from oppression and confinement. These two poems are similar in that
they express the theme of how despair corrupts all, yet they differ in how they present despair in
society and provide an insight to how each author view the world. Both There s a certain slant of
light and London contain the central theme that despair corrupts the mind, and makes people
believe that their lives have no meaning. These poems tell how outside forces oppress society, and
that these forces continually beat down the people into making them feel worthless. This feeling of
worthlessness expressed through the speaker of each poem. Each poem expresses the belief that
society cannot escape this feeling of despair, and that there is no hope for a better life. Both poems
create this theme through their dark settings of hopelessness and misery. The setting in each poem
reinforces that there is no escape

The Myth Of God s Covenant With Man
While the Old Testament focuses much on God s covenant with man starting first with the patriarch
Abraham the book of Genesis establishes the foundation for such concepts as the forbidden, original
sin, and perhaps the most intriguing, evil. This latter presents itself early in the text, most notably
through God s creation of the Tree of Knowledge. Some scholars have questioned the reasoning
behind the tree, stating that if God knew the outcome of Adam and Eves decision, then why allow
its existence. Similar arguments arise when addressing the murder of Able by his brother, Cain.
There is, however, an explanation for God s inclusion of evil in the Garden and throughout the
remainder of the Old Testament. God s allowance of evil in the book of Genesiswhile
simultaneously offering man free will acts as a test, one rooted in hope, loneliness, and love.
The operative words, and the ones that help prove the above argument, come from the first
chapter of Genesis. When God says, Let us make man in our image, and after our likeness, He
tells the reader two things: one, He shares in man s emotional construction, and two that our
image resembles the creator (Genesis 1:26). In our image the operative words is the basis for all
of God s tests, meaning that He, knowing what is in himself, knows what is in man: a kind of
genetic apprenticeship. God s creation of the Tree of Knowledge is man s first test, not of free
will, but of man s likeliness of imitating his creator. By

Myotonic Dystrophy Research Paper
Myotonic Dystrophy is the most common form of muscular dystrophy. It is a chronic, multi
system disorder that is characterized by progressive muscle wasting and weakness. Symptoms
include; myotonia (prolonged muscle contractions), the inability to relax certain muscles after
use, slurred speech, temporary locking of jaw, cataracts, abnormalities of the electrical signals
that control the heartbeat, and early balding and infertility in men. There are two major types of
myotonic dystrophy, type 1 and type 2. Many of the symptoms are overlapping, the only
differences are type 1 is generally more severe than type 2 and type 1 affects the lower legs, hands,
neck and face. Whereas, type 2 affects the neck, shoulders, elbows, and hips. Myotonic dystrophy...

This protein may play a role in the communication within cells, especially those of the heart, brain
and skeletal muscles. It is believed that the protein is involved in the communication between cells
and regulates the production and function of important structures inside muscles cells by
interacting with other proteins. The DMPK gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 19 at
position 13.3. It is between base pairs 45,769,708 and 45,782,556 making it 12848 base pairs long.
It consists of a trinucleotide repeat of the nucleotide sequence CTG. Meaning that the nucleotides
CTG are repeated multiple times. In a normal DMPK protein the number of CTG repeats ranges
from 5 34. The mutation that causes myotonic dystrophy is known as trinucleotide repeat
expansion, meaning it increases the number of times CTG is repeated in the gene. People with
myotonic dystrophy can have 50 to 50,000 repeats, the more repeats an individual has the worse
their symptoms are. The increased number of repeats produces an expanded version of mRNA,
which then forms clumps inside the cell that interfere with the production of many other proteins.
These clumps prevent muscle cells and cells in other tissues from functioning

The Creation Of Western Civilization
From its beginnings at the foundation of ancient Greece, our present humanity has evolved itself to
be focused on the value of each individual. The contradiction in terms of Western civilization,
however, was also was made obvious right from the start. The Greek s attention on individuals
arose from a slavery based society. The focus on individual rights created both a democratic system
and an increase in learning, as well as scientific revolutions that would remain unique until the
Renaissance. Adding onto the Greek groundwork, the Romans furthered another significant
keystone of Western civilization; the establishment of laws. Through the collapse of Rome and
increasing Germanic barbarian invasions, the foundations of Western civilization had
fundamentally vanished. They were not put back into effect until the Italian Renaissance inspired
massive attention to the traditional texts. As a result, a change in European thinking switched from
The Almighty back to the individual. Starting chiefly as a theocratic and nationalist movement, the
Reformation in Germany provided an assortment of nationwide securities. It prohibited the Roman
Church from restricting academic discussion in northern Europe. New translations of the Bible also
resulted in the expansion of vulgar languages which encouraged literacy and education. The
Enlightenment brought us even closer to achieving westernized democracy, inquiring deeper into
both religion and tyranny. Many French philosophers held an

Essay on Fredrick Douglass
After reading the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave, I have
received a better understanding of the life of a slave. Douglass has a way of explaining the trials
and tribulations of a slave, which makes the reader, look at the situations in a different
perspective. Douglass narrative was originally oral and he eventually sat down and wrote it as
story of events of that time during his life. I believe he wrote it not just to tell his story but for
other abolitionistsof the time to actually feel what the slaves went through.
Douglass begins his narrative in a very original way. He does not jump into the accounts of his life.

Douglass main argument in the narrative was to end the institution of slavery as a whole. His goal
was to appeal to the middle class people of that time and convince them to get on board with the
abolitionist movement. Douglass had a great writing style that was descriptive as well as
convincing. He uses standard English instead of the vernacular which showed his intelligence. He
stays away from expressing personal emotion because someone who is filled with emotion is not
rational. If he was too engaged in his emotions he would not be taken seriously, you had to be
rational in order to convince the northern abolitionists. Also staying away from the horrific details
of the time help him grasp the attention of the women who in turn would convince their husbands
to help by donating money and eventually ending slavery. He used his words effectively in
convincing the readers that the slave owners were inhuman and showed how they had no feelings
for other human beings. He also attempts to portray them as corrupt Christians. The churches at the
time were losing their parishioners and their congregations. If Douglass successfully proved them as
corrupt Christians the ministers would also jump on board for the movement, and their support was
a necessity.
I feel as though Douglass had a great argument about the treatment of African Americans at the time

Ode to the West Wind
Ode to the West Wind, Shelley invokes Zephyrus, the west wind, to free his dead thoughts and
words, as from an unextinguished hearth / Ashes and sparks (63, 66 67), in order to prophesy a
renaissance among humanity, to quicken a new birth (64). This ode, one of a few personal lyrics
published with his great verse drama, Prometheus Unbound, identifies Shelley with his heroic,
tormented Titan. By stealing fire from heaven, Prometheus enabled humanity to found civilization.
In punishment, according to Hesiod s account, Zeus chained Prometheus on a mountain and gave
him unending torment, as an eagle fed from his constantly restored liver. Shelley completed both

Inspiration gives the poet a melody, a sequence of simple notes, resembling the wind s stream (15),
but his creative mind imposes a new harmony of this melody, by adding chords and by repeating
and varying the main motifs. The human imagination actively works with this wind to impose
harmony on its melody. The lyre accomodate[s] its chords to the motions of that which strikes
them, in a determined proportion of sound; even as the musician can accommodate his voice to the
sound of the lyre (В§8). In this way, the poet s mind and the inspiration it receives co create the
poem.
In Ode on the West Wind, the `melody delivered to Shelley is unconsciously expressed in the poem
s epic metaphor, and the chords that his mind generates in response are, first, the repetitions and
variations of that melody for example, the variation of the leaves metaphor and secondly, the formal
order: the sonnet sequence imposed on terza rima, as if the tradition of Western sonneteering were
imposed on Dante s transcendental vision. That Shelley echoes the metaphor melody s points of
comparison throughout The Defence of Poetry shows how deeply ingrained it was in his mind. To
Shelley, metaphors like this, comparing a human being and the universe, characterize the prophetic
powers of all poets. Their conscious, rational mind, in routine

Narrative art tells a story through the use of images that spark imagination, evoke emotions, and
capture universal cultural truths and aspirations. Winslow Homer did just that in his most famous
painting, The Gulf Stream , from 1899. The elements of art and principles of design are impeccably
utilized by Homer in this paintingand arouse all types of feelings and emotions within the viewer. I,
myself, was struck with a number of emotions, mostly of sadness and fear for the man, among other
feelings. Therefore, I believe Homer did a great job at communicating his ideas through the

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life threatening lung condition that prevents

risk factors for ARDS should be categorized either by direct injury to the alveolar space or indirect
injury initiated by systemic disease (2014, p. 601) . Common direct injuries to the lungs can include

Indeed, the Partition of India and Pakistan, a decision made by lawmakers far from the front lines,
unleashed an episode of brutal depravity that might be unmatched in recent history. Growing
tensions between Hindus and Muslims throughout the 1940s gave a ride for the desire for a
Muslim state. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who is regarded as the father of Pakistan, believed that a
unified nation would only lead to marginalization of Muslims and, eventually, violence and civil
war. An independent state seemed a solution to this danger. However looking at the grave situation
of Pakistan today, was this a good decision or not is a highly debatable point of discussion running

Dr. D Arcy s The Fate Of Irish Culture
By beginning the story with a broader canvas, Joyce was able to connect Gabriel s experience to
the context of Ireland and it s society at the time. His thoughts at the end can be understood in such
a way that they can resonate with the entire nation of Ireland instead of being left at the sadness of
one man. These thoughts are motivated by Mr. D Arcy s singing that evening, and to some level,
Gabriel is contemplating his own mortality. He is also analyzing the fate of Irish cultureby
identifying that it must adapt in order to retain its relevance in a modernizing world despite the
efforts of his aunts.
Joyce describes everything in great detail giving his characters, no matter how small of a role
they play, life and a story; this in turn gives the entire party an air of life and vibrancy. However,
the party takes place in a beyond thoroughly described, old house. Joyce shows off this house with
every detail of its ancient splendor seeming to push it even further into the past just to show that
this way of life no longer fits into the modern Irish society. The detail in which the feast is
portrayed highlights how important food and its traditionality is to Gabriel s aunts in their efforts to
preserve the traditional Irish culture.
Joyce uses subtle detailing to create Gabriel by intensely describing his appearance and
observations. Joyce begins by describing Gabriel s carefully protected patent leather shoes (para.
20) a trend from the continent (para. 44) to show

My Identity In The Gaza Strip
I am an American Jew born 12 years after the end of WWII. Hebrew school, which I started
attending at age 5 until 11, created a sense of difference and specialty between myself and other

and were to be despised. Consequently, 75 percent of my identity was held in place by my
membership to the Jewish world community. Consequently, I lived the next twenty years as a
Defensive American Zionist Jew. I didn t question Israelfor its military actions, for occupying

Logical Fallacies In Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is an important part of a lot of people s lives because they choose to look at the
world more differently than most. People choose to think critically because they want to see what
other don t. What I believe that critical thinking means is to look at something from every angle
possible and to think about why or how it s important. A lot of readers that I know tend to think
critically because it allows them to dissect what is written and gain more from a story aside from
the normal enjoyment of just reading the book. Critical thinking helps readers determine if the
book is problematic and how the errors in that book make it worth discussing. Critical thinking

believe that this is a hasty generalization because it takes one situation with an author of a certain
gender and creates this belief about other authors of the same gender. It creates a stereotype or
misconception about male authors in general. I think that this happens when readers refuse to think
critically for themselves because when some of these readers hear something, they run with it like it

The Pros And Cons Of The American Dream
America: the land where every opportunity is built on the optimism of the free market. Where
actions and consequences are replaced with push and pull economics. Where the customer is
always right, no matter how wrong they are. And no other time period so properly exemplifies
this than the fifties. The economy was booming, consumer goods were selling like hot cakes and
housing prices were at an all time low. It was the perfect time to be a blue collar family man,
resting cozy in a picket fence neighborhood with plastic pink flamingosscattered across his lawn,
like plastic seeds grown from the depths of a factory. Yes sir, it seemed like this was the epitome
of the American Dream; we lived in a world of the Optimism, and of dreams. But in doing so,
have we lost the reality of our situation? Have we become so blind to what we wanted that we
failed to realize the repercussions of our actions to achieve these goals? Jennifer Price believes so.
For when she gazed into such an obscene conformity, she could do nothing but laugh. And when she
was done laughing, she created a snide commentary of the egregious lapses in a system where the
optimistic consumer is favored over the reality of his or her surroundings. And no better trinket
emphasized this than the Plastic Pink Flamingocraze in the 1950 s, the vehicle which Price uses to
pursuit her claims
Before even reading the essay, one can notice the paradoxical nature of the title Price has placed:

Conflicting Parties Case Study Analysis
Conflicting Parties Case Study Analysis
When working in tight quarters, there are countless ways of unintentionally impeding on a
colleague s work habits. Due to a shared office, Brian and Jon are no exception. While striving to
complete work tasks through the means each is comfortable with and accustom to, each individual
s work style habits imposes on the other s. Unfortunately due to space limitations, separating Brian
and Jon to two separate offices is not a possibility. However, through thoughtful conflict resolution,
Brian and Jon can negotiate the means to more forward working together, without continuing to
distract the other with their own work style.
Conflict Resolution In broad terms, conflict resolution refers to the process two or more
individuals utilize in order to reach an agreement to a dispute or debate (Miall, Ramsbotham
Woodhouse, 1999). While there are many specific components to conflict resolution, the
application of each facet is strongly tied to the specifics of each individual conflict. In the case of
Brian and Jon s office space conflict, the pair should examine the relevant concepts of fractionation,
framing, reframing, and common ground. Ultimately, if the two colleague s cannot reach an
agreement(s) on how to move forward working together, mediation can be utilized as a last resort.

As one of the many components of conflict resolution, fractionation is a concept which should be

The Trauma Of Aggression Analysis
Several years ago, I got back from school track practice later than usual. My arms and legs felt
like Jell o as I struggled to remove my backpack and place it on the low kitchen countertop
scattered with mail, newspapers, and magazines. The track coach had subjected us to an intense
speed workout. I complained the whole way home: My feet hurt. My legs hurt. My neck. My

Intellectual Property And The Copyright Act Of 1976
Intellectual property represents ideas created by minds of humans that require certain rights for
their use. Intellectual property gives companies a competitive advantage and attracts the attention
of other business partners and investors (Lee, 2016). With such importance, it is necessary for the
law to protect these ideas from being used by unauthorized individuals. To shield from this, trade
secrets, patents, and copyrights are used to protect the ownership of intellectual property(Legal
Information Institute).
A copyright gives the originator of literary, artistic, or music works the right to perform, publish,
record, or print them. This can include sound recordings, paintings, photographs, films, melodies,
television, radio broadcasts, cable programs, performances, and even codes to computer
programs (Legal Information Institute). Since copyrights cover several different types of
materials, the duration varies depending on what work is being protected. According to the
Copyright Act of 1976, musical, artistic, and literary works created after January 1, 1978 have
copyrights that last 70 years after the author has passed away, 95 years after publication, or 120
years from creation, whichever expires first (United States Copyright Office, 2011). However, the
published editions of these works have copyrights that last 25 years after being first published.
Broadcast and cable programs, on the other hand, have a copyright duration of 50 years after being
created

A State Of Confusion And Dismay
I awaken in a state of confusion and dismay as to where I am and how I got here. I assign
confusion to being in a pitch black room, or what I assume to be a room, I cannot tell for sure
because it s so dark and empty. As I stumble around and try to find some sort of clue as to where I
am, a blinding light suddenly pierces through the darkness and shines with an unbearable heat
against my pale face. I begin to wonder if I am trapped in here for a reason, maybe I have done
something to deserve this. Maybe it was the time I stole from the local gas station, or maybe it
was something much worse, maybe it was something more evil and of morbid intent. As I lay on
the hard ground trying to push those dark memories deep inside my head, I begin to notice the
light moving and change in brightness almost as if someone was holding it. I get the weird
sensation that I am not alone and am being watched, but this feeling soon passes as I notice the
room get hot and the air becomes thick with humid air like a summer night after a long storm.
The air continues to get thicker; I begin to feel myself choking, and soon realize why I am in this
place and just what it wants. My flight back home landed around nine in the morning, and all
around me I saw families reunited with their loved ones; all around me was love and compassion
which I had not felt in quite some time. I walked through the snaking hallways of the airport
looking for my family who had maybe gotten lost and was waiting at

An Examination of The Newtonian Method
The aim of Isaac Newton s Principia is explicitly stated in his preface to the reader: His desire is to
reestablish natural philosophy; to show how philosophers can employ various mathematical and
experimental methods to phenomena in order to reach conclusions about nature, particularly about
the motions of solid bodies. Through the utilization of geometry to describe celestial firmament, he
wishes to accurately demonstrate mechanics with a direction guided by the foundations of
geometry. In his analysis, the purpose of geometry is to teach the solutions of practical mechanics

This preliminary framework expresses that forces are proportional to mass and to acceleration.
Since mass or the quantity of matter and acceleration are both quantities that can be measured, it
seems Newton gives the reader a means of measuring the forces that are to governed the natural
world. If one begins to treat forces as measurable quantities, then one can endeavor to identify two
ostensibly discordant forces as a single, compounded force through thinking of them as
measurements. It is this move by Newton that appears to be revolutionary in a world that solely
treated material bodies with properties like size, shape, mobility and solidness. For example in
proposition one of book one, gravity presents itself as a kind of centripetal force, or impressed
force on a material body. Thus the body moving in a straight line will continue to do so until it
experiences a gravitational pull (seen in the body s movement from point B to C, C to D etc.) in
which case it will diverge from a straight line motion produced by its inherent force. (B to c) Indeed,
the gravitational pull might originate with various masses in various circumstances, manifest as
various entities and the forces present at hand may be different with movement to movement of the
body. As long as one is measuring these forces by looking at the relationships of same kinds that
exist in the phenomenon examined, the geometry utilized for describing the proportionality between

Why People Shouldn T Live Near Volcanoes
Volcanoes
People shouldn t live near volcanoes because they are very dangerous and could erupt at anytime
causing pyroclastic flows, lahars, and landslides. The volcano eruption in Tambora, Indonesia, in
1815, killed around 92,000 people due to these events that happen when a volcano erupts.
One reason why people shouldn t live by volcanoes are pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic flows are
high speed avalanches of hot ash, rock fragments, and gases. These pyroclastic flows which can
reach 1,500 degrees fahrenheit and move 100 150 mile per hour that are capable of knocking

Lahars can travel up to 50 miles per hour at one time. Over 21,000 people died in armero colombia
in a lahar bodies and bones were found years later. Lahars commonly reach 20 40 miles per hour
(Pacific Disaster Center).
The third reason why people shouldn t live by volcanoes is landslides a landslide is a rapid
downhill movement of rocks, ice, and snow. Heavy rainfall can cause landslides to ocurre not
just volcanic eruptions. Volcanoes are suscept to landslide because they are composed of layers of
weak fragmented volcanic rocks that tower above the surrounding terrain (Pacific Disaster
Center). Landslides can very from small rocks, ice, and snow to millions of pounds of rock, ice,
and snow at one time.
Some people view volcanoes as great land formations to live by because they produce geothermal
energy. Geothermal energy means natural energy form the earth. The energy that is made is steam
that is very hot which has to be filtered first due to all of the bad ash particles and bad gases that
are in the steam. Countries such as Iceland make extensive use of geothermal power with
approximately two thirds of Iceland s electricity coming from steam powered turbines (The

Analysis Of Michael Zancan s The Garden Of Giants
The oil on canvas Tears of Joy in the Garden of Giants by Michael Zancan was created in south
west France back in January of 2011. This surreal artist plunges into his fantasies creating mystical
worlds filled with vivid hues and outstanding details. A long process awaited this particular piece.
During one of his travels, the first draft got misplaced at a metro station for many months. Filled
with hope, Zancan continued his research of varying structural forms that 1900 s dome glasshouses
used in order to incorporate them into his masterpiece. Fortunately, he found architectural
inspiration within the walls of The Grand Palais in Paris. A digital paintingwas drafted using the old
sketch he had initially lost in the metro and on, December 2005 the first draft was ready for
critique. This digital prototype served as a guide for the 120 by 200 cm oil on canvas. On to the
drawing board! Fascinated by the vivid world, Zancan gave two additional coats of oil on the art
to enhance the painting s contrast before its final reveal. To this day, the original canvas remains
by romantic s side in France. Zancan is strategic, he wants to increase his popularity seeing that, his
art s value will grow along with it. In addition, high quality prints can be obtained and purchased
through his web page.
Like a prima ballerina whom incorporates strength and beauty with every move she makes, Zancan

Essay about Lower the Drinking Age
Lower the Drinking Age Everyone knows that it is illegal to consume alcohol under the age of
21. Why is 21 the magical age that makes a person intelligent and mature enough to consume
alcohol? Sure, some adults abuse alcohol and some teenagers would be perfectly able to drink
responsibly, but why not 18 or 35 or 40? This seemingly random number, 21, is associated with
adulthood, as if the day a person turns 21 they know everything and are mature. The drinking
age should be lowered to where one can learn to drink responsibly. First, the drinking age used to be
18 in some states. Many of today?s parents were legally allowed to drink at 18. Today, teenagers
are faced with more responsibility and are treated more like adults... Show more content on

According to Wechsler, this was during National Prohibition in the 1920s and State Prohibition
in the 1850s. These laws were finally repealed because they were unenforceable and because the
reaction towards them caused other social problems. Today we are repeating history and making
the same mistakes that occurred in the past. It did not work then and it is not working now.
Thirdly, since the law was passed in 1987, which raised the legal age from 18 to 21, there has
been a decrease in car crashes but at the same time there has been an increase in other problems
related to heavy, irresponsible drinking. This movement, the law that was passed, that swept all
50 states, may actually have made the bingeing worse. When teens drink, they know it will
probably be a while before they?ll have liquor again, so they make up for it by drinking in larger
quantities. According the College Health Survey 96, cutting class after drinking jumped from
9% in 1982 to almost 12% in 1996. Also, missing class because of a hangover rose from 26% to
28% and getting a lower grade went from 5% to 7%. It is this consumption of large amounts that
is causing so many problems among the youth of America. ?By setting a high drinking age, what
we have inadvertently done is say that drinking is an adult activity, and that makes it especially
appealing to younger people,? says David Hanson. It makes it a thrill for the younger drinkers.

Christian belief. Religion pervaded social and political life to an extent almost unimaginable
today (The Victorians: Religion and Science.) The people of this time had no option as to what
they wanted to openly believe, if one did not agree with the way of the King/Queens church, the
consequences could be severe. As a result of the Christian beliefs, women were forced to play a
very submissive role, adhering to the roles of the

The Effects Of Climate Change On The Environment Of...
Climate change is a current event that many debate. The National Climactic Data Center reported
that, as of June 2012, the average combined global land and ocean temperature was 0.63 degrees
Celsius higher than the twentieth century average. This is the fourth highest temperature ever
recorded. Many credible sources, such as a number of United Nation bodies, the International Panel
of Climate Change, and academic scholars state that climate change cause resource scarcity. A lack
of resources can cause an increase in violent ethnic conflicts, and, in dire circumstances, can even
bring about crimes against humanity and genocide. Genocide and crimes against humanity in
Rwanda, Darfur, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been... Show more content on

If climate change is not real, than the whole argument about climate change causing resource
scarcity and violent ethnic conflict is invalid. However, there is a lot of evidence that shows
climate change is a real problem. A study by The State of Climate Global Analysis for June 2012
shows that there is evidence for climate change. The temperature of the land and water is above
average, and the number of temperature abnormalities continues to rise. Sunga (2014) writes, that
CNN reported July 2012 was estimated to have been the hottest month for the continental United
States since record keeping began in 1895. (p. 4) A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change warned that eleven of the last twelve years (from 1995 2006) were among the
twelve warmest years for surface temperature since 1895. It also noted that the ocean has grown to
be over 3000 meters deep, and that average snow coverage and mountain glacier mass had declined.
After being shown the evidence, one probably thinks that climate change is a reality. However, the
fact that climate change exists does not mean that it causes violent ethnic conflict and genocide.
Not many studies have been done on a link between climate change and violent ethnic conflict. Yet,
there has been growing concern in the international community and academic literature that climate
change could have an effect on violent conflict in general. In 1982, the UN General Assembly
created the World Charter for

The Pros And Cons Of Erga Omnes
In the international law, believed that as cooperation between state like entities most probably
started with simple trade agreements. These agreements were usually concluded on a bilateral level
and defined the relationship between two states. The idea of an international community only
appeared much later and its first indications can be traced back to the 17th century with the famous
peace treatiesof Westphalia, when states stroke for a balance of power. However, only in the 19th
century states began to develop international treaties in which general rules were laid out such as
the Declaration of Paris regarding the freedom of the sea (1856) or the General Act of the Brussels
Conference in 1890 that established an International Maritime... Show more content on

These obligations protect a collective interest of the parties. Although not every party might be

Erga omnes and erga omnes partes norms were very precisely defined by the Institute de Droit

(a) An obligation under general international law that a State owes in any given case to the
international community, in view of its common values and its concern for compliance, so that a
breach of that obligation enables all States to take action; or

Ramps Height
This investigation seeks to determine the distance that a marble can travel after leaving a ramp
with retrospect to the ramps height. This experiment wished to find the relationship between the
height of the ramp and the distance that the marble will travel from the end of the ramp (Diagram
1, value d). The ramp is positioned on top of a bench with the height of the ramp being the
dependent variable.
The reason that this subject is important is because it demonstrates a wide understanding of linear
motion. Secondly, this scenario has some extremely relevant physics components present in many
fields of experience, for example calculating the projectile of an unguided missile, or calculating
how particular objects are going to be affected by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the experiment is undertaken the distance from the ramp to the landing position of the ball
is recorded (value d in diagram 1). This means that the formula, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 can be used
to find the vertical component, however, (t) time is required for this formula. Using the equation
v=dtthe time can be found. vt=dt(dt=height of the table) t=dv Both the distance (d) and velocity (v)
are known so they can be substituted into the equation to find time (t). Going back to the original
equation Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 the known values can be added to the equation, Xv= X1+Vvt
+12at2where X1= initial position and Vv= initial velocity
в€
ґXv=12at2(Note X1= 0 and Vv = 0)
This equation now has to be derived to calculate the vertical velocity.
Vv=at
The vertical component therefore has a velocity of the acceleration (gravity = 9.8ms^ 1) multiplied
by the time.
With two sides of a right angle triangle being known a2+b2=c2can be used to find the last velocity.
a = 2ghr b = att = dtvv=

A Comparison Of Benzocaine And Benzoic Acid
In this lab, extraction was use as method for separating a mixture of compounds. Specifically,
Benzocaine and Benzoic Acid were individually isolated from a starting mixture which consisted
of both components. A percent recovery was found for both. The percent recovery found for the
benzocaine was 1%, while the percent recovery for benzoic acidwas 35%. These low percentages
are result of errors during the experiment. One source of error was during the separation of layers.
When separating the two layers, some of the top aqueous layer flowed out with the bottom layer.
This happened in all of the separation steps, and caused slight impunity in the compounds. This
error could have been prevented by more concentrationduring this part of the experiment.

Foucault s Power And Power
Foucault s Power (Intro) Power, what is power? Is it a thing, something that can be controlled by
a person or group? Or is it an omnipresent force with no clear distinction of what it is and what it
is not? My views before being introduced to Foucault was: power is an attainable thing, but
elusive. For example, it is said one has power, if one has enough money. Another example I
commonly hear is that, the government (the State, the law, police) holds too much power. My final
example is, in my opinion, power is usually viewed as a negative thing by ones that do not hold
said power. Michel Foucault, a philosopher, challenged the traditional view of power by
analyzing power in a series of studies of different forms of power, such as from his books:
Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish, and The Order of Things to name a few. What
Foucault found through his critical observations was that the concept of power in the traditional
views were too narrow and specific; not a singularity composed of only negative aspects but also a
dualism that leans much heavier on the side of positivity than vice versa and an omnipresent force
(or rather relationships) that may be used through various techniques but not owned at all.
DEFINITION OF FOUCAULT S POWER

Essay about Motivation for Work
Work is a positive thing for many people. To some people, it may be described as a place to escape
from the kids, or even a time consumption thing for a single or retired person, but most
importantly it is what we do in order to provide for our families and ourselves. Work is
something that we all will experience at one time or another during our lives. There are several
reasons why a person goes to work. These reasons can be better explained as work motivation. Work
motivation can be defined as the inner forces that make us work and want to work harder to
achieve personal or organizational goals (George Jones, 2005). There are two different types of
motivation; intrinsic and extrinsic. When personal goals motivate us,... Show more content on

On the other hand, things like total accomplishment motivate Aberdeen s employees; they thrive on
bettering the work environment, learning new skills and getting to participate in group leadership.
You could say that the main difference between the Aberdeen and Green River plants have mostly
to do with which type of motivational reasoning each have. Aberdeen employees are motivated for
intrinsic reasons. They continue to work hard for the satisfaction of the entire company doing well,
as Green River employees do things for extrinsic reasons. They are only concerned with doing only
what it takes to make more money.
There are several different ways an employer can motivate their employee s: job design goals,
performance appraisal, pay, and career development. Job design is the process of envisioning
and defining specific work systems for a particular job, and deciding what techniques, procedures,
and equipment that it will take to do the job (George Jones, 2005). Job design plays an important
role in enhancing motivational levels in the workplace. It seems that if you can break jobs down
individually and make them simpler to understand do, then people are more apt to do them
effectively. With this in mind, I would like to recommend that Green River s management break
their jobs down into steps to help simplify and make for better production. Developing goals and
teams, as well as teaching them to share the

Utah Raptor Observation
After visiting the dinosaur museum in Price, Utah, my interest in fossils grew. I decided to use
that area of Utah for my research this week. Near Price, Utah, there is an unusual amount of
predatory dinosaur bones that have been found. Many dinosaurs have been discovered there. In
fact, the Utah Raptor is what Spielberg used as a model for his Jurassic Parkmovies. When he
wanted to use the raptor in his film, many scientists laughed at him. There was no way that a
raptor would be big enough to be intimidating. However, soon after Spielberg had his idea, the
Utah Raptor was discovered. It was as big as Spielberg envisioned his raptor to be. Why are there
so many predatory dinosaurs found in that area? Scientists speculate that there was a

The Marketing Plan For Avon
History It all started out with an idea in 1886, an idea that allowed women become more self
effacement and successful. A book salesman named David H. McConnell, from New York created
that idea. The idea was to give women an opportunity to sell perfume to help them become
financially independent, this idea became a dream, a company named The California Perfume
Company (CPC), currently named Avon. Avon represents a company focused on providing the
additional beauty and complimentary beauty products throughout different parts of the world. Avon
ushered in a new direct selling approach, allowing the seller to bypass the middle man and gain
extra income. During the first 100 years of operation, Avon adapted as the world evolved. Avon used

Avon had a plan to invest a clothing line within department/ retail stores JCPenny and Sears, but
those efforts did not last. The partnership did not happen with Sears and only lasted 2 years with
JCPenny, with that being said, the company tripled their revenue from 1999 to $846 million in
2004. In 2010, Brazil passed the U.S. to become the biggest market for Avon when looking at
sales. Avon launched a new information management system in Brazil and ended up losing
sales because the program causes missed orders and deliveries. Next I will discuss the CEO

McCoy was appointed in 2012. McCoy resume was impressive, she worked at Johnson Johnson
where they specialize in different beauty products. McCoy planned to focus on three critical areas
of the company: executing growth platforms, driving simplification and efficiency, and improving
organizational effectiveness (Dess, McNamara Eisner, 2016). McCoy believed technology was
the key so she pushed to expand their current information technology systems, which took an
investment of about $200 million. McCoy kept direct selling as the focus point for her changes
and believed that marketing was the key to success. McCoy had to manage an internal
investigation that was based on illegal activity in 2009 and 2010, both years were before McCoy

Unlike PCI DSS, HIPAA itself does not descend to the level of security controls and technologies to
implement. This requires the organizations affected by HIPAA also known as covered entities to
try to follow the spirit of the regulation as opposed to its letter (Chuvakin amp; Schmidt, 2013). The
iTrust database contains protected health information and therefore identifies as a covered entity
and must establish safeguards to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic
data. Compliance with HIPAA security standards in the areas of administrative safeguards, physical
safeguards, stored data safeguards, and technical security mechanisms are required for an entity to
achieve HIPAA compliance.
Lack of Access Control
The lack of administrative safeguards that control information access management concluded that
the iTrust website and database lack the appropriate access controls to protect and safeguard patient
data. Access controls should enable authorized users to access the minimum necessary information
needed to perform job functions (HHS, 2007). Additionally, every person accessing the system
should have a unique account for accountability and auditing purposes. HIPAA does not publish a
guide with the exact security controls to achieve compliance, which is the direct opposite of PCI
DSS. Instead, HPIAA would rather an organization achieve compliance with a sincere aspiration to
protect sensitive patient

The Effectiveness of the Decapitation of Osama bin Laden
May 1, 2011 was a momentous night for Americans; the hunt for Osama bin Laden had been going
on for nearly ten years. When President Obama announced bin Laden s death late that night, the
nation celebrated the end of the war on terror. Up until that point, bin Laden had been the face of
terrorism around the world. While the majority of Americans were joyful at the news of his death,
others questioned the value of his removal. Was the decapitation of Osama bin Ladenas the leader
of Al Qaeda effective? Was it worth ten years of concentrated effort and resources? Some scholars
would argue that his death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zawahiri, on the other hand, has a rigid and argumentative style of leadership. Because bin Laden
was the voice and stimulus behind Al Qaeda, some scholars believed his absence might also lead
to lowered recruitment and less financial support (Al Masri et al.).
Although bin Laden was an inspirational leader, Al Qaeda is a religious, separatist organization
whose ideology resonates within a wide group of people in the Middle East. Bin Laden s
spiritual teachings brought in members, but he was not their prime recruiting tool. If Al Qaeda
had revolved entirely around bin Laden s personal logic and ideals it would have collapsed with
him, but because of their broad ideology Al Qaeda, has been able to stay strong.
Throughout the search for bin Laden American leaders came to the conclusion he was more
symbolically important than operationally important to his followers. Because bin Laden was
continually on the run, he could not be relied upon for the day to day operations of Al Qaeda
(Baker et al.). With its leaders being the subject of a global manhunt, Al Qaeda had to adapt in
order to survive. This led to the development of a decentralized governing system, with a bottom
up approach through its franchise groups. In fact, aside from Zawahiri, bin Laden s chosen
successor, very few Al Qaeda members who operated directly under bin Laden remain. In just the
past four years the United States has killed four of the top five leaders in Al Qaeda: bin Laden,

  • 2. Sample Lit Review on Hypertension 2. Literature review This chapter reviews the literature on hypertension and hyperlipidaemia and their relation to risk factors including age, gender, genetics, diet and weight, alcohol, smoking, lack of activity and co morbidity. It also examines mediating factors including economic factors, stress/personality, medications, lifestyle modifications and complementary therapies including foot reflexology and foot massage. Finally, it reviews outcomes (quality of life) including physiological, psychological and socioeconomic changes. 2.1 Background to the literature review The occurrence of hypertension, a chronic condition, is increasing in developing countries such as Thailand due to the sociological, political and economic changes and the ... The results showed that patients aged 65 years or over had a higher mean systolic and lower mean diastolic blood pressure (p 0.001) in the office than those aged less than 65 years. Office mean arterial blood pressures were also higher (p 0.001) in the older patients. For mean ambulatory blood pressure, older patients had higher mean ambulatory systolic blood pressures than the younger age group, but there were no differences in mean ambulatory diastolic blood pressure between the two groups. Men had higher mean ambulatory diastolic and mean arterial blood 26 pressures than women; however, women had higher systolic (p 0.008) and mean arterial office blood pressures than men (Khoury et al 1992). A similar result was gained in a study of 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in 352 healthy Danish subjects aged 20 to 79 years. These participants were divided into groups of 25 to 30 subjects, of each sex, across all age groups. Blood pressure monitoring was measured on the left arm every 15 minutes from 7am to 11pm and every 30 minutes from 11pm to 7am. The study found that systolic blood pressure increased only slightly with age and was significantly higher in men than in women. On the other hand, the diastolic blood pressure increased only slightly with age in both sexes until the 50 to 59 years age group, declined thereafter and was not statistically different between sexes (Wiinberg et al 1995). • 3. Pixar Changing The Overall Feeling For Animation Forever Pixar changed animation forever by introducing new ideas and changing the overall feel for animation forever. One very important trend that Pixar started was the actual slowing down of a movies narrative. Previously, before Pixar, animated movies such as Aladdin or even Beauty and The Beast, both made by Disney, were both very rapidly paced, along with most other animated movie prior to Pixar. Most companies did this because they considered their audiences to be an extremely impatient bunch, specifically children. Pixar however, disproved this theory with Up, Wall E, and many others. Pixar knew the value of temporarily slowing down a movies narrative. Pixar had faith that it s audience, including children, would not lose interest during... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As time can tell, it was a safe bet, by the time the credits of Toy Story began to roll the first day, the movies would never be the same (Zorthian). Toy Story grossed a total of $191,796,233 at the box office in The United States alone, it was the highest selling film for three weeks in a row. As the first full length, 3D computer animated movie, it was a milestone for animation, possibly the most significant since the introduction of color. Most critics however, glossed over this achievement, which was actually exactly what the developers were hoping for. The critics were actually thrilled at the invisibility of the work. The film even won an academy award for Special Achievement, also including nominations for best original screenplay, score, and song. The foundation that was set by Toy Story had effects far beyond the franchise. Pixar, which Disney officially acquired in 2006, has released 15 movies since then, this includes 26 Academy Awards and three Grammy s in total. There have been more than 250 computer animated films released world wide since Toy Story. John Lasseter, current chief creative officer of Pixar and Disney, attributes that plentitude in part to the choice by the Toy Story team to worry about the story more than showing off, and to concentrate on developing software to serve their ideas, rather than the other way around. Lasseter even states, if Toy Story had not succeeded the way it did, it might not have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Futility Of Global Thinking It s Your Decision: Concepts from The Futility of Global Thinking In The Futility of Global Thinking writer Wendell Berry gives the people of the next generation advice on the problems they may come in contact with, now that they re on their own. Berry goes into great detail explaining what problems to look out for and what ideas to avoid when faced with a problem. He is trying to help steer the next generation away from the mistakes previous generations have made so they can truly make their own decision in how their lives are going to play out. One thing Wendell Berry wants these graduates, the next generation, to avoid is not to make the mistake of mislabeling things as planetary . One example he uses is how the environmental... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Futility of Global Thinking, Berry kind of comes to the big corporations defense. He uses the example of William Sound where, essentially, he says that it wasn t just big corporations that put William Sound into one ship, the consumers demand for cheap and plentiful energy helped guide their hand. Berry is trying to prevent the new generation from making the same mistake previous generation have made, falsely dividing the world between the guilty producers and the innocent consumers. If we as the consumer only see the problem as the producers (i.e. big corporations) then we will not change our own behaviors and nothing will actually be solved. This is what Berry was trying to get these graduates to understand. Continuing on the topic of problems remaining unsolved, Berry mentions the reality of how people solve their problems. And the reality of it is, people don t solve their problems. He points out the fact that a lot of people do talk about their problems, and even talk about solving them. But that is all they do. Berry words it as follows, though we have been talking about most of our problems for decades, we are still mainly talking about them. This I agree with. People always talk about how they will do something or change something, but when it actually comes down to it they do nothing about it. I mentioned this in an earlier paper about cocoa farmers. In Empire Falls, Miles Roby and his family have stayed in Empire Falls for much of their life with no foreseeable change in the future. In Nobody s Fool, Donald Sully Sullivan has lived in North Bath, NY since he was a child and seems to have deteriorated with the town. In both novels, the towns have declining economic prospects and the residents have little engagement with happenings outside their towns. The old gringo is a very mysterious, adventure and death seeking character. He comes to Mexico in search of death, hoping that he could just die in the battlefield. We learn that he had his own family, but all were dead or wanted nothing to do with him. He was a bitter American journalist who had made an abrupt break with his past and is riding into Mexico to join Pancho Villa #8217;s revolutionary army. • 8. There s A Certain Slant Of Light And William Blake s London Emily Dickinson s There s a certain slant of light and William Blake s London are two poems that contain the same theme about despair, yet express that theme very differently. Both poems contain the theme about how despair causes people to be trapped in a constant cycle of pain and loss, and that there is no way to break this cycle. The way that the author expresses this theme is very different. Dickinson s poem presents despair that seems to come from heaven, and with this despair her life has no meaning. Blake s poem presents despair only through people in society, and that despair comes from oppression and confinement. These two poems are similar in that they express the theme of how despair corrupts all, yet they differ in how they present despair in society and provide an insight to how each author view the world. Both There s a certain slant of light and London contain the central theme that despair corrupts the mind, and makes people believe that their lives have no meaning. These poems tell how outside forces oppress society, and that these forces continually beat down the people into making them feel worthless. This feeling of worthlessness expressed through the speaker of each poem. Each poem expresses the belief that society cannot escape this feeling of despair, and that there is no hope for a better life. • 9. The Myth Of God s Covenant With Man While the Old Testament focuses much on God s covenant with man starting first with the patriarch Abraham the book of Genesis establishes the foundation for such concepts as the forbidden, original sin, and perhaps the most intriguing, evil. This latter presents itself early in the text, most notably through God s creation of the Tree of Knowledge. Some scholars have questioned the reasoning behind the tree, stating that if God knew the outcome of Adam and Eves decision, then why allow its existence. Similar arguments arise when addressing the murder of Able by his brother, Cain. There is, however, an explanation for God s inclusion of evil in the Garden and throughout the remainder of the Old Testament. God s allowance of evil in the book of Genesiswhile simultaneously offering man free will acts as a test, one rooted in hope, loneliness, and love. The operative words, and the ones that help prove the above argument, come from the first chapter of Genesis. When God says, Let us make man in our image, and after our likeness, He tells the reader two things: one, He shares in man s emotional construction, and two that our image resembles the creator (Genesis 1:26). In our image the operative words is the basis for all of God s tests, meaning that He, knowing what is in himself, knows what is in man: a kind of genetic apprenticeship. God s creation of the Tree of Knowledge is man s first test, not of free will, but of man s likeliness of imitating his creator. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This protein may play a role in the communication within cells, especially those of the heart, brain and skeletal muscles. It is believed that the protein is involved in the communication between cells and regulates the production and function of important structures inside muscles cells by interacting with other proteins. The DMPK gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 19 at position 13.3. It is between base pairs 45,769,708 and 45,782,556 making it 12848 base pairs long. It consists of a trinucleotide repeat of the nucleotide sequence CTG. Meaning that the nucleotides CTG are repeated multiple times. In a normal DMPK protein the number of CTG repeats ranges from 5 34. The mutation that causes myotonic dystrophy is known as trinucleotide repeat expansion, meaning it increases the number of times CTG is repeated in the gene. People with myotonic dystrophy can have 50 to 50,000 repeats, the more repeats an individual has the worse their symptoms are. The increased number of repeats produces an expanded version of mRNA, which then forms clumps inside the cell that interfere with the production of many other proteins. These clumps prevent muscle cells and cells in other tissues from functioning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Creation Of Western Civilization From its beginnings at the foundation of ancient Greece, our present humanity has evolved itself to be focused on the value of each individual. The contradiction in terms of Western civilization, however, was also was made obvious right from the start. The Greek s attention on individuals arose from a slavery based society. The focus on individual rights created both a democratic system and an increase in learning, as well as scientific revolutions that would remain unique until the Renaissance. Adding onto the Greek groundwork, the Romans furthered another significant keystone of Western civilization; the establishment of laws. Through the collapse of Rome and increasing Germanic barbarian invasions, the foundations of Western civilization had fundamentally vanished. They were not put back into effect until the Italian Renaissance inspired massive attention to the traditional texts. As a result, a change in European thinking switched from The Almighty back to the individual. Starting chiefly as a theocratic and nationalist movement, the Reformation in Germany provided an assortment of nationwide securities. It prohibited the Roman Church from restricting academic discussion in northern Europe. New translations of the Bible also resulted in the expansion of vulgar languages which encouraged literacy and education. The Enlightenment brought us even closer to achieving westernized democracy, inquiring deeper into both religion and tyranny. Many French philosophers held an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Douglass has a way of explaining the trials and tribulations of a slave, which makes the reader, look at the situations in a different perspective. Douglass narrative was originally oral and he eventually sat down and wrote it as story of events of that time during his life. I believe he wrote it not just to tell his story but for other abolitionistsof the time to actually feel what the slaves went through. Douglass begins his narrative in a very original way. Douglass main argument in the narrative was to end the institution of slavery as a whole. His goal was to appeal to the middle class people of that time and convince them to get on board with the abolitionist movement. Douglass had a great writing style that was descriptive as well as convincing. He uses standard English instead of the vernacular which showed his intelligence. He stays away from expressing personal emotion because someone who is filled with emotion is not rational. If he was too engaged in his emotions he would not be taken seriously, you had to be rational in order to convince the northern abolitionists. Also staying away from the horrific details of the time help him grasp the attention of the women who in turn would convince their husbands to help by donating money and eventually ending slavery. He used his words effectively in convincing the readers that the slave owners were inhuman and showed how they had no feelings for other human beings. He also attempts to portray them as corrupt Christians. The churches at the time were losing their parishioners and their congregations. If Douglass successfully proved them as corrupt Christians the ministers would also jump on board for the movement, and their support was a necessity. Ode to the West Wind Ode to the West Wind, Shelley invokes Zephyrus, the west wind, to free his dead thoughts and words, as from an unextinguished hearth / Ashes and sparks (63, 66 67), in order to prophesy a renaissance among humanity, to quicken a new birth (64). This ode, one of a few personal lyrics published with his great verse drama, Prometheus Unbound, identifies Shelley with his heroic, tormented Titan. By stealing fire from heaven, Prometheus enabled humanity to found civilization. In punishment, according to Hesiod s account, Zeus chained Prometheus on a mountain and gave him unending torment, as an eagle fed from his constantly restored liver. Inspiration gives the poet a melody, a sequence of simple notes, resembling the wind s stream (15), but his creative mind imposes a new harmony of this melody, by adding chords and by repeating and varying the main motifs. The human imagination actively works with this wind to impose harmony on its melody. The lyre accomodate[s] its chords to the motions of that which strikes them, in a determined proportion of sound; even as the musician can accommodate his voice to the sound of the lyre (В§8). In this way, the poet s mind and the inspiration it receives co create the poem. In Ode on the West Wind, the `melody delivered to Shelley is unconsciously expressed in the poem s epic metaphor, and the chords that his mind generates in response are, first, the repetitions and variations of that melody for example, the variation of the leaves metaphor and secondly, the formal order: the sonnet sequence imposed on terza rima, as if the tradition of Western sonneteering were imposed on Dante s transcendental vision. That Shelley echoes the metaphor melody s points of comparison throughout The Defence of Poetry shows how deeply ingrained it was in his mind. I, myself, was struck with a number of emotions, mostly of sadness and fear for the man, among other feelings. His thoughts at the end can be understood in such a way that they can resonate with the entire nation of Ireland instead of being left at the sadness of one man. These thoughts are motivated by Mr. D Arcy s singing that evening, and to some level, Gabriel is contemplating his own mortality. He is also analyzing the fate of Irish cultureby identifying that it must adapt in order to retain its relevance in a modernizing world despite the efforts of his aunts. Joyce describes everything in great detail giving his characters, no matter how small of a role they play, life and a story; this in turn gives the entire party an air of life and vibrancy. However, the party takes place in a beyond thoroughly described, old house. Joyce shows off this house with every detail of its ancient splendor seeming to push it even further into the past just to show that this way of life no longer fits into the modern Irish society. The detail in which the feast is portrayed highlights how important food and its traditionality is to Gabriel s aunts in their efforts to preserve the traditional Irish culture. Joyce uses subtle detailing to create Gabriel by intensely describing his appearance and observations. Joyce begins by describing Gabriel s carefully protected patent leather shoes (para. 20) a trend from the continent (para. 44) to show ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Where actions and consequences are replaced with push and pull economics. Where the customer is always right, no matter how wrong they are. And no other time period so properly exemplifies this than the fifties. The economy was booming, consumer goods were selling like hot cakes and housing prices were at an all time low. It was the perfect time to be a blue collar family man, resting cozy in a picket fence neighborhood with plastic pink flamingosscattered across his lawn, like plastic seeds grown from the depths of a factory. Yes sir, it seemed like this was the epitome of the American Dream; we lived in a world of the Optimism, and of dreams. But in doing so, have we lost the reality of our situation? Have we become so blind to what we wanted that we failed to realize the repercussions of our actions to achieve these goals? Jennifer Price believes so. • 27. Intellectual Property And The Copyright Act Of 1976 Intellectual property represents ideas created by minds of humans that require certain rights for their use. Intellectual property gives companies a competitive advantage and attracts the attention of other business partners and investors (Lee, 2016). With such importance, it is necessary for the law to protect these ideas from being used by unauthorized individuals. To shield from this, trade secrets, patents, and copyrights are used to protect the ownership of intellectual property(Legal Information Institute). A copyright gives the originator of literary, artistic, or music works the right to perform, publish, record, or print them. This can include sound recordings, paintings, photographs, films, melodies, television, radio broadcasts, cable programs, performances, and even codes to computer programs (Legal Information Institute). Since copyrights cover several different types of materials, the duration varies depending on what work is being protected. According to the Copyright Act of 1976, musical, artistic, and literary works created after January 1, 1978 have copyrights that last 70 years after the author has passed away, 95 years after publication, or 120 years from creation, whichever expires first (United States Copyright Office, 2011). This preliminary framework expresses that forces are proportional to mass and to acceleration. Since mass or the quantity of matter and acceleration are both quantities that can be measured, it seems Newton gives the reader a means of measuring the forces that are to governed the natural world. If one begins to treat forces as measurable quantities, then one can endeavor to identify two ostensibly discordant forces as a single, compounded force through thinking of them as measurements. It is this move by Newton that appears to be revolutionary in a world that solely treated material bodies with properties like size, shape, mobility and solidness. For example in proposition one of book one, gravity presents itself as a kind of centripetal force, or impressed force on a material body. Thus the body moving in a straight line will continue to do so until it experiences a gravitational pull (seen in the body s movement from point B to C, C to D etc.) in which case it will diverge from a straight line motion produced by its inherent force. (B to c) Indeed, the gravitational pull might originate with various masses in various circumstances, manifest as various entities and the forces present at hand may be different with movement to movement of the body. As long as one is measuring these forces by looking at the relationships of same kinds that exist in the phenomenon examined, the geometry utilized for describing the proportionality between ... • 39. Analysis Of Michael Zancan s The Garden Of Giants The oil on canvas Tears of Joy in the Garden of Giants by Michael Zancan was created in south west France back in January of 2011. This surreal artist plunges into his fantasies creating mystical worlds filled with vivid hues and outstanding details. A long process awaited this particular piece. During one of his travels, the first draft got misplaced at a metro station for many months. Filled with hope, Zancan continued his research of varying structural forms that 1900 s dome glasshouses used in order to incorporate them into his masterpiece. Fortunately, he found architectural inspiration within the walls of The Grand Palais in Paris. A digital paintingwas drafted using the old sketch he had initially lost in the metro and on, December 2005 the first draft was ready for critique. This digital prototype served as a guide for the 120 by 200 cm oil on canvas. On to the drawing board! Fascinated by the vivid world, Zancan gave two additional coats of oil on the art to enhance the painting s contrast before its final reveal. To this day, the original canvas remains by romantic s side in France. Zancan is strategic, he wants to increase his popularity seeing that, his art s value will grow along with it. In addition, high quality prints can be obtained and purchased through his web page. • 40. Essay about Lower the Drinking Age Lower the Drinking Age Everyone knows that it is illegal to consume alcohol under the age of 21. Why is 21 the magical age that makes a person intelligent and mature enough to consume alcohol? Sure, some adults abuse alcohol and some teenagers would be perfectly able to drink responsibly, but why not 18 or 35 or 40? This seemingly random number, 21, is associated with adulthood, as if the day a person turns 21 they know everything and are mature. The drinking age should be lowered to where one can learn to drink responsibly. First, the drinking age used to be 18 in some states. Many of today?s parents were legally allowed to drink at 18. Today, teenagers are faced with more responsibility and are treated more like adults... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Wechsler, this was during National Prohibition in the 1920s and State Prohibition in the 1850s. These laws were finally repealed because they were unenforceable and because the reaction towards them caused other social problems. Today we are repeating history and making the same mistakes that occurred in the past. It did not work then and it is not working now. Thirdly, since the law was passed in 1987, which raised the legal age from 18 to 21, there has been a decrease in car crashes but at the same time there has been an increase in other problems related to heavy, irresponsible drinking. This movement, the law that was passed, that swept all 50 states, may actually have made the bingeing worse. When teens drink, they know it will probably be a while before they?ll have liquor again, so they make up for it by drinking in larger quantities. According the College Health Survey 96, cutting class after drinking jumped from 9% in 1982 to almost 12% in 1996. Also, missing class because of a hangover rose from 26% to 28% and getting a lower grade went from 5% to 7%. It is this consumption of large amounts that is causing so many problems among the youth of America. ?By setting a high drinking age, what we have inadvertently done is say that drinking is an adult activity, and that makes it especially appealing to younger people,? says David Hanson. It makes it a thrill for the younger drinkers. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The National Climactic Data Center reported that, as of June 2012, the average combined global land and ocean temperature was 0.63 degrees Celsius higher than the twentieth century average. This is the fourth highest temperature ever recorded. Many credible sources, such as a number of United Nation bodies, the International Panel of Climate Change, and academic scholars state that climate change cause resource scarcity. If climate change is not real, than the whole argument about climate change causing resource scarcity and violent ethnic conflict is invalid. However, there is a lot of evidence that shows climate change is a real problem. A study by The State of Climate Global Analysis for June 2012 shows that there is evidence for climate change. The temperature of the land and water is above average, and the number of temperature abnormalities continues to rise. Sunga (2014) writes, that CNN reported July 2012 was estimated to have been the hottest month for the continental United States since record keeping began in 1895. (p. 4) A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that eleven of the last twelve years (from 1995 2006) were among the twelve warmest years for surface temperature since 1895. It also noted that the ocean has grown to be over 3000 meters deep, and that average snow coverage and mountain glacier mass had declined. After being shown the evidence, one probably thinks that climate change is a reality. However, the fact that climate change exists does not mean that it causes violent ethnic conflict and genocide. Not many studies have been done on a link between climate change and violent ethnic conflict. Yet, there has been growing concern in the international community and academic literature that climate change could have an effect on violent conflict in general. • 46. Foucault s Power And Power Foucault s Power (Intro) Power, what is power? Is it a thing, something that can be controlled by a person or group? Or is it an omnipresent force with no clear distinction of what it is and what it is not? My views before being introduced to Foucault was: power is an attainable thing, but elusive. For example, it is said one has power, if one has enough money. Another example I commonly hear is that, the government (the State, the law, police) holds too much power. My final example is, in my opinion, power is usually viewed as a negative thing by ones that do not hold said power. Michel Foucault, a philosopher, challenged the traditional view of power by analyzing power in a series of studies of different forms of power, such as from his books: Madness and Civilization, Discipline and Punish, and The Order of Things to name a few. What Foucault found through his critical observations was that the concept of power in the traditional views were too narrow and specific; not a singularity composed of only negative aspects but also a dualism that leans much heavier on the side of positivity than vice versa and an omnipresent force (or rather relationships) that may be used through various techniques but not owned at all. Aberdeen employees are motivated for intrinsic reasons. They continue to work hard for the satisfaction of the entire company doing well, as Green River employees do things for extrinsic reasons.
