compare and contrast Information Technology and Information Systems.List the components of both an information system and information Technology.Explain the difference between the two.In that description be sure to include what can and can\'t be outsourced. Solution Comparison and contrast between Information Tecnology and Information Systems has to be primarily between the key words TECHNOLOGY and SYSTEM related to another key word INFORMATION. To begin with firstly , Information is processed data, supposed to be a finished product/services to be consumed. What constitute Information System or for any SYSTEM, is the objective, goal and or the purpose to begin with. Next each system has various components called sub-systems. Generally each system is made up of man, machines, materials and technical know how. one can cite at least three sub-systems or say I-P-O approach. I stands for Input, P stands for Process and O represents Output. Tecnology is primarily concerned with the Process part of the bigger term System. Although nowadays looking into the complexity of the terms used, IS and IT are uttered in a single breath and means the same thing to the common person. But these are two different things. The Information System is much broader and older than the Information Technology. IT came into existance with the development of computers though it existed in the form of mechanical devices also and one can go back to tyhe era of abacus. Information systems are pre historic, essential for the development of civilisations. It may not be wrong to say that IT is part of IS and is also responsible for the development of the same. The Information System must have an objective, well defined structure, self regulating mechanism, life cycle and made up of people, procedures, hardware based on IT. Sometimes IT is primarily considered as hardware only but is alsoto be considered in terms of development of software. IT in terms of networking with the development of Internet may be outsourced.Depending upon the utilization of various euipments vis a vis their capacity and costs of acquiring and maintenance costs may result in out-sourcing. Generationo as well as processing of internal information may not be a good idea for out sourcing. However, bigger organisations having core operations other than IT such as petroleum, steel, cement, fertilizers, power & elecricity, railways, roadways, airlines etc may out source some sub-systems of their IS. To the extend possible the core activities should not be outsourced. Keeping in view the role of information to the profitibility of the organisation such important information should be dealt internally only. Information required to be disseminated to publioc and to various Government agencies can be outsourced..
