3. Introduction
Before we discuss about the topic we must clear about some
definition. Because without any knowledge of Management
information system or Information technology we cannot get
a valuable conclusion.
So first we discuss about- what is MIS, it’s structure etc. and
secondly we discuss about the Information technology, after
that we get the conclusion that “how MIS and IT is
dependable to each other’
4. What is Management Information
system(MIS)?
Information is the basis for every decision taken in an organization. The efficiency
of management depends upon the availability of regular and relevant information.
Thus it is essential that an effective and efficient reporting system be developed as
part of accounting system. The main object of management information is to
obtain the required about the operating results of an organization regularly in
order to use them for future planning and control.
The old techniques like intuition, rule of thumb, personal whim and prestige, etc.
are now considered useless in the process of decision taking. Modern
management is constantly on look out for such quantitative and such information,
which can help in analyzing the proposed alternative actions and choosing one as
its decision. Thus, modern management functions are information-oriented more
popularly known as “management by information”. And the system through
which information is communicated to the management is known
as “management information system (MIS)” . The management needs full
information before taking any decision. good decisions can minimize costs and
optimize results. Management information system can be helpful to the
management in undertaking management decisions smoothly and effectively.
5. Management information system can be analyzed thus:
Management: management covers the planning, control, and administration of
the operations of a concern. The top management handles planning; the middle
management concentrates on controlling; and the lower management is concerned
with actual administration.
Information: information, in MIS, means the processed data that helps the
management in planning, controlling and operations. Data means all the facts
arising out of the operations of the concern. Data is processed i.e. recorded,
summarized, compared and finally presented to the management in the form of
MIS report.
System: data is processed into information with the help of a system. a system is
made up of inputs, processing, output and feedback or control.
Thus MIS means a system for processing data in order to give proper information
to the management for performing its functions.
8. What Is Information Technology
(IT)?
Information technology (also referred to as IT) is the application of
computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and
manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. The
term is commonly used as a synonym for computers and computer networks, but
it also encompasses other information distribution technologies such as television
and telephones. Several industries are associated with information technology,
such as computer hardware , software, electronics, semiconductor,
internet, telecom equipment, e-commerce and computer services
9. In the business context, the Information Technology Association of America has
defined information technology (IT) as "the study, design, development,
application, implementation, support or management of computer-based
information systems". The business value of information technology is to
automate business processes, provide information for decision making, connect
business with their customers, and provide productivity tools to increase efficiency.
In an academic context, the Association for Computing Machinery defines it as
"undergraduate degree programs that prepare students to meet the computer
technology needs of business, government, healthcare, schools, and other kinds of
organizations .... IT specialists assume responsibility for selecting hardware and
software products appropriate for an organization, integrating those products with
organizational needs and infrastructure, and installing, customizing, and
maintaining those applications for the organization’s computer users. Examples of
these responsibilities include the installation of networks; network administration
and security; the design of web pages; the development of multimedia resources;
the installation of communication components; the oversight of email systems; and
the planning and management of the technology lifecycle by which an
organization’s technology is maintained, upgraded, and replaced."
10. Advantages of IT
Globalization
Cost- Effective
Communication
Storing and protecting information
Creation of New jobs.
11. How can we say that IT and MIS is
dependent to each other ?
MIs and IT has their own working field. And both can work as an individual in their
own sector. But somehow both are dependent on each other. MIS is basically known
as study of people, technology and organization. MIS Systems needs to record all the
data about an organization, like how many employees are working in the organization,
record of all the transaction whatever done by the organization and many more. MIS
system is like a heart of an organization. Because without management information
system we cannot measure the risk of an organization, or we can justify what to do in
future to improve the present condition of the organization. IT helps the MIS in many
way, in earlier days when we don’t have computer then it’s not easy for the manager to
kept the data, because there are so many risk to kept data in paper, like it may be
destroy the paper in fire, or sometime it may be lost or theft by someone. But IT
sector create a great revolution in this field. Because of computers or other equipment
of IT nowadays we can save and storage our information speedily, and risk is also low
to destroy the information. Also the other equipment of IT like internet, mobile,
helps the manager to collecting the data speedily. So because of IT, management
information system can run in a smooth way.
12. On the other hand MIs also helps IT sector to work in a proper way. Suppose
we take the example of internet. Now days we can see lots of online shopping
website in internet. These websites cannot be a successful one without the help
of MIS. Because MIS is helps them in ways like MIS told them about the
competitor, and also point out what are factor which can make them better.
Suppose one websites dealing with mobile phone, so MIS can provide them
the information about how they presented their product in their website to
attract the customer and also helps them to know that which product can give
them better profit.
So we can say that MIS and IT both has their own independent area, but both
are dependent on each other.
13. Conclusion
From the whole discussion now we can say that MIS
and IT independent in their purpose, but both are
dependent on each other. Nowadays Information
technology and Management information system both
are important aspect for an organization.
