The University provides paid leave for employees to volunteer through its Community Service Leave program. This leave can be used for activities like volunteering at a child's school, helping local non-profits, or disaster relief. Eligible employees include permanent SPA and EPA non-faculty as well as EPA faculty. The University encourages public service both on and off campus and maintains a listserv with weekly volunteer opportunities.

1. Community Service Leave
The University provides flexible work schedules and paid leave options for employees who have
a passion for volunteer work and community involvement. North Carolina’s Community Service
Leave program is open to permanent SPA and EPA non-faculty, as well as EPA faculty who earn
leave.
This employee benefit can be used to volunteer for field trips orparent teacher conferences for
children through the high school level. Remember, you don’t have to be a parent to use your
Community Service Leave. There are several opportunities to use your leave option to help
improve a child’s educational experience by becoming a mentor, tutor or volunteer as an aid in a
classroom.
Community Service Leave also extends to local non-profit organizations. Employees can use the
leave to volunteer for a community service organization, nursing home visits, buildhomes, or
blood, bone marrow and organ donation. Community Service Leave covers disaster relief and
emergency volunteer activities in the case of a state of emergency.
The University also provides several opportunities for public service on and off campus. Join the
public service listserv through the Carolina Center for Public Service to view weekly public
service opportunities for faculty, staff and students.
