The Collins Dictionary was founded in 1819 by Scottish publisher William Collins. It has since published numerous editions, with the current 11th edition published in 2011. It is produced by HarperCollins and edited by Patrick Hanks and Lawrence Urdang. The dictionary was the first to make extensive use of computer databases and digital typesetting. It is now also available online at CollinsDictionary.com, which incorporates word usage examples from the Collins Bank of English Corpus and allows crowd-sourcing of new words. Collins publishes dictionaries for many languages in addition to English.
