1.0 Description of the Event
The Christchurch earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 (Ritcher scale) hit New Zealand s second largest
city, Christchurch, on February 22, 2011 (Fig1). Figure 1. Map of New Zealand.
In red the affected zone of Christchurch earthquake (Earthweek, 2014).
It s recognized as the second deadliest earthquake in New Zealand following the 7.8 Hawkes bay
Earthquake (Kaiser et al, 2012). The earthquake was first thought to be an aftershock of the 7.1
Darfield earthquake of September 2010 at the eastern edge. This was an area that originally was of a
low earthquake occurrence rate since prior to 2011 there was no knowledge of a fault s existence thus
catching the New Zealand citizens off guard. The Christchurch earthquake resulted in 185 casualties
affecting more than 300,000 people (Kaiser et al, 2012). The earthquake first made contact with in the
South Islands, only 10 km away from the center of Christchurch. Ground motions were unusually
large near Christchurch measuring 2.2 g and 1.7g at the epicenter, the point directly above

Regardless how hard we try to escape the difficulties of life, life is never easy. For instance, when a
parent s expectation becomes too much for their child to handle, their child will be conflicted with
these expectations and will feel like a disappointment. In the book, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, a
young man named Chris McCandless escapes society and his family s problems by deciding to live
life on the road. McCandless came from a well off family and had a natural talent for everything he
did, but he had a bad relationship with his father due to his father being unfaithful to his mother.
McCandless s relationship with his father was the problem that drove him to live life on the road. To
McCandless and Krakauer life on the road meant going into the wild, therefore life on the road can be
defined as going into the wild. Although life on the road allows people to find themselves, it is nothing
more than an avoidance of life s problems. Many young people carry out activities they enjoy to
discover or find themselves. Life on the road brought peace to McCandless. McCandless went on the
road in his early twenties. McCandless decided, after exploring in the west of the U.S, to go on an

would be similar to the cornet, which is just a smaller version of the trumpet, and I know how to play

The Prague Spring is referred to when the Warsaw Pact allies invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968. In
1948, communism was the only political party in Czechoslovakia. The communist take over was a
very popular movement. One reason why it was such a popular movement is because Joseph Stalin
signed an agreement with Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt that stated that, the Red Army,
which would then lead to pro communism, would liberate Czechoslovakia. The second reason why
this was such a popular movement is because the people of Czechoslovakia remembered what
happened with the Munich Agreement, where most of Czechoslovakia was surrendered to Nazi
Germany in 1938.
By the early 1950s, Czechoslovakia was a Soviet style dictatorship and a loyal ally of the Soviet
Union (Goldman 123). Antonin Novoty was appointed the head of Czechoslovakia in 1952 by Joseph
Stalin. Novoty was not well liked by the Communist Party. He refused to make changes to the political
system, thinking that it would improve the Soviet s political influence in Czechoslovakia. In 1967,
many very popular writers rebelled against him. It made it more difficult for Novoty to establish
policies. The Communist Party then asked him to resign in January 1968.
The post of the first Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia was given to a man named

Is Bullying a Hate Crime Bullying and hate crimes are extremely similar in nature. The primary
foundation on which both are rooted is targeting those who have obvious differences. Similarly,
another component that establishes bullying as a potential hate crime is that there is an obvious bias
against the victim rooted in prejudice and preconceptions. In essence, perpetrators in both scenarios
seem intent on singling out differences in others and attacking them based on them. Bullying becomes
a hate crime because it can hinder the spirit and can cause immense pain and psychological harm to
