2. Constantine I
In the early days of the Orthodox Christian Church, a power struggle over the control and guidance of
the dogma of the Christian faith was raging. During this time, various sects of the Christians religion
were at odds with each other. Early Christianity had numerous different sects and varying beliefs and
each sect was convinced that their version of the Christian religion was the correct doctrine and that
the other Christian sects practiced heresy. Constantine I, known to history as Constantine the Great,
was the Roman Emperor from 306 to 337 AD and played a vital role in this religious movement.
Eventually, the Orthodox and Arianism sects became the primary sects, and it was after the death of
the baptized Constantine I, that the Orthodox ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It angered Constantine that Bishop Eusebius defended Arius, the founder of Arian Christian beliefs,
and other Arian exiles; this resulted in the exile of Eusebius for three years by Constantine. After three
years, Eusebius was able to convince Constantine that the Arian Christian beliefs of Arius did not
violate the Nicene Creed. Eusebius, who never renounced his Arian beliefs, nor converted to Orthodox
Christianity, returned from exile in 329. In 337AD, Constantine the Great was baptized by Eusebius of
Nicomedia, who remained a member of the Arian sect and continued to resist the Orthodox Church for
the remainder of his life.

3. Notes On Variable Interest Entities
Variable Interest Entities An entity that does not have sufficient equity to finance its activities without
additional financial support, or in which the equity investors, as a group, do not have the
characteristics of a controlling financial interest is a VIE. The determination as to whether an entity
qualifies as a VIE depends on the facts and circumstances surrounding each entity and may require
significant judgment. Our investment funds generally qualify as VIEs and are evaluated for
consolidation under the VIE model. We are required to consolidate a VIE if we are the primary
beneficiary, defined as the variable interest holder with both the power to direct the activities that most

Business Combinations and Goodwill Business combination transactions are accounted for under the
acquisition method. Accordingly, the purchase consideration is allocated to assets and liabilities based
on their estimated fair value at the acquisition date. The consideration for the net assets acquired is
determined prior to the assessment of the fair value of the net assets at the acquisition date. We have
identified several intangible assets acquired in business combinations including VOBA, acquired
distribution channels and state licenses. We value VOBA as described below under Deferred
Acquisition Costs, Deferred Sales Inducements and Value of Business Acquired. We value distribution
channels using the multi period excess earnings method under the income approach and the state
licenses using the market approach. Distribution channels and state licenses are included in other
assets on the consolidated balance sheets. Goodwill represents the excess of purchase consideration
over the acquisition date fair value of net assets acquired and is included in the other assets on the
consolidated balance sheets. Goodwill is not amortized but reviewed for impairment annually or more
frequently if events occur or circumstances change indicating potential impairment has occurred. If
the acquisition date fair value of the net assets acquired exceeds the purchase consideration in a

statements and carefully aligned with the Wisconsin Common Core Standards for Math and English
and the Wisconsin State Standards for Science, Social Studies, Art, and Physical Education. Wisconsin
Common Core Literacy Standards are also used across the curriculum. With these essential elements

society with bright futures. Our program has been incredibly successful in supporting our students on
all levels. Dr. Abraham Maslow used his extensive research regarding human development to create a
hierarchy of needs that describes the stages of human development that each of us needs to meet to
become fully functioning, responsible adults, in other words, becoming the contributing members of
society that our program is committed to producing. Maslow s hierarchy has seven stages that appear
in the form of a pyramid. Essentially we, as humans, all start at the bottom of the pyramid, and each

5. Children s Emerging Cultural Identity
Children s emerging cultural identity, is an essential and complicated task for all young children. One
that primarily develops within the child s own family, and then extends out to the broader community
and culture (Goleman, 1995). Children develop a sense of belonging within their own community,
which allows them to develop an understanding of, and harmonise other individual s beliefs and
cultures. The practices and understandings children have will fluctuate according to traditions and
beliefs, backgrounds and values, of their specific family identity (Dunn, 1993). Child socialisation
ideals may alter across different humanities, as well as across individuals (Hong Xiao, 2001).
Socialisation, the process by which children are educated with the attitudes, values, and behaviours of
a society, exists in every culture of the world. (Krober, 1978. P.111) The universal social structure is
subjective by culture; the content of socialisation is also constructed on prominent culture values of
the society. Due to the impact of cultural history and social arrangements, physiognomies prized in
children in one society may not be valued in another (Howes, 1992).
The ongoing course of developing a sense of ones self, is a process of joining a individuals personal
identity, to their social identity. Individualism and connectivity are not dichotomous attributes; they
intertwine together in the child. (Trevarthen, 1988) In various traditional African communities,

8. Animal Shelters and the No Kill Movement
Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all
shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever
be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being
killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for
multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill
shelters save more money than other shelters. Why Waste a Valuable Life? Killing and disposing of
animals because there is no room available for them is unnecessary and inhumane. A shelter is usually
a place where something or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another question that comes to mind is if No Kill animal shelters are actually the solution or not.
Some pounds will kill as many as 90% of the animals they redeem and that owners hand over. But on
the other hand countless pounds are lessening their kill rates of adoptable animals to 0% (Animals).
Death should never be the solution when it comes to the lives of these powerless animals. Why Kill
When You Can Adopt? Usually when others are given the choice between a kill shelter and a No Kill
shelter the answer is almost always the No Kill shelter. What if each animal shelter in the United
States were to swap to No Kill shelters and if all the services and programs that help run No Kill
shelters were available? Well the United States would emancipate roughly four million cats and dogs
who are scheduled to die painfully in shelters this year, and the many years to come after that. This
dream is a dream that is not completely impossible to achieve (No Kill Advocacy Center). Why are
animals given a certain time line to be adopted when animals have the same right to life just as
humans do? Many passionate people feel the same way and that kill shelters are completely
unnecessary. The ASPCA has its own program called Mission Orange. This program works with
communities to help raise the shelter save rate by 10% a year so that it can accomplish a 75% save
rate by 2010 ( Animal Shelters and the No Kill

9. Radio Free Dixie
Critical Analysis: Radio Free Dixie The beginning of black militancy in the United States is said to
have begun with the chants Black Power demanded by Stokely Carmichael and Willie Ricks during
the 1966 March against Fear. While Carmichael and Ricks may have coined the phrase black power ,
the roots of the movement had been planted long before by Mr. Robert F. Williams. In Timothy Tyson
s book: Radio Free Dixie: Robert F. Williams and the Roots of Black Power, Tyson details the life of a
remarkable man who had the audacity not only to challenge racial injustice in America but also to
contest the rarely disputed strategies of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Establishment.
Tyson uses Williams life to illustrate his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story telling effect allows for a fairly easy read that provides a great deal of information along the
way. Tyson s book in comparison to similar biographical works based in this time period was laid out
particularly well which again allowed for an easy read. Similar to Dr. King s autobiography, Tyson
goes in depth in to the roots of Williams past deciphering his experiences and relating them to the final
product. For example, detailing Williams life back to the ideologies of his grandparents, his childhood,
experiences with racial injustice and his military career allowed for a deeper understanding of his
transformation in to a militant black leader. Another effective tactic Tyson used to depict Williams life
was to focus his relationships with several other prominent black leaders at the time.; Roy Wilkins, Dr.
King, Thurgood Marshall etc. This allows the reader to find parallels and better understand the
complexities of the black freedom struggle. Tyson highlights the incongruity in strategy and ideology
in his detailing of these relationships yet maintains his central thesis that in the end they were all
fighting for the same thing. The life of Robert Williams underlines many aspects of the ongoing black
freedom struggle: The decisive racial significance of World War II and the impact of the Cold war on
the Freedom Struggle and equally important the centrality of questions of sexuality and gender in
racial politics.

13. Technology And Its Impact On Education
In this decade, technology has significant influence in many areas of society especially for improving
education, language acquisition, support learning, and it is a great way to access to information. In
fact, nowadays students depend on their machine such as computers, laptops, mobile phone to study in
the classroom or outside the class. In addition, they use the internet to communicate with teachers and
to help them do research for information they need to do homework. Although, technology is a
substantial part of teaching and languages learning, in some aspect of languages learning may not
have any favorable impact. The efficiency of any technology on learning language rely on its uses
quite than the technology its self(Zhao,2003,21).
Expressively, numerous recent studies have focused on the effectiveness of the technology and to
explore the recent potential to improve technology in language learning. However empirical studies in
some research were made to assess this issue. Therefore, there is Evidence suggesting that the
applications of technology effectively have an impact in various aspects of language education. New
technology can assist in improving the quality of input, the authenticity of communication and provide
more relevant and useful feedback ( Zhao,2003,21).

18. Descriptive Essay On Black Mountain
Hiking to the summit of Black Mountain is not easy. The hike is plagued with boulders, slippery
rocks, and a steep incline, which make the hike feel like walking up an infinite flight of stairs.
However, the pain in my thighs and the burning in my lungs is a tiny price to pay to experience the
summit of Black Mountain. My first experience with Black Mountain s summit occurred when I was
only five years old. My aunt used to be a hiking fanatic, and she loved to take me on new hikes that
she discovered. When my aunt took me to the summit of Black Mountain for the first time, I was
captivated by the place. My captivation has continued throughout the years. The summit of Black
Mountain is captivating because of the environment, view, and weather.
First, the summit of Black Mountain is captivating because of the environment. To start, the top of
Black Mountain is covered with boulders. Due to natural factors, some of the boulders are jagged and
stand upright like the Empire State Building. Other boulders are more polished and lay flat on the
ground. In addition, some boulders contain writing that is chiseled and scratched into the surfaces of
them. When I was at the summit, I had to choose a boulder that was polished and smooth in order to
comfortably record my observations. While I was observing, I noticed that the most popular carvings
were the hikers names, dates, and sentimental sayings. Therefore, the boulders on Black Mountain s
summit are captivating because they are diverse, and they contain a personalized touch that allows
hikers to picture the lives of hikers in the past. Next, the summit of Black Mountain contains a bit of
wildlife. Due to the altitude of the summit, many animals do not live there. However, there are tiny
lizards that scamper under the boulders into crevices hidden from humans. When I was there, I saw a
bit of wildlife when I heard a rustling of pebbles. In the corner of my eye, a lizard dashed across a pile
of powdery dirt and ensconced under a jagged boulder. Later, when I asked a fellow hiker, Dwayne
Keller, about his favorite activities at the summit, he explained that he loved seeing the wildlife at the
top such as the lizards I witnessed earlier (Keller).

Senior Care Texas and Companionship
As we age, there are many positive events that happen in our lives. We get to witness the marriage of
our children, the birth of our grandchildren or great grandchildren, and hopefully enjoy the fruits of
our labor during retirement. There are some negative parts to aging as well. Friends and family pass
on or move away, the excitement of the workforce is replaced with endless numbers of unscheduled
days, and even your closest allies, such as a spouse, may move on in divorce or death. The result of
these changes, despite the many positives, is loneliness.

The University of Rochester Medical Center found that social interaction is important for health, and
loneliness leads to medical problems. One study found fewer colds, lower blood pressure, and lower
heart rates in seniors with strong social ties. Statistics show that marriage, perhaps the strongest tie,
adds years to life expectancy. And suicide, mental illness and alcoholism rates are much lower when
people feel a sense of belonging.
Studies at UC San Francisco support the Rochester findings. They found that seniors over 60 who
experience prolonged bouts of loneliness have a 45 percent increase in their risk of death. They were
also nearly 60 percent more likely to have mental and physical problems develop as a result of the
loneliness.

Border Crossing
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see (Edgar Degas). Art can range from paintings,
photos, metal working, abstracts and much more. It can take you places where you re not and it allows
you to interpret things differently from other people. There are many pieces of art that are placed
throughout Iowa State campus, from the art inside of the many halls to the sculptures and even the
buildings that fill campus. These are all just a few pieces of art that have their own meaning and
interpretation. The sculpture Border Crossing, located near MacKay Hall, is just one of many located
throughout campus. This sculpture represents pushing towards a goal and not giving up no matter the
obstacles and that overcoming an obstacle is possible, it also shows the acceptance of culture. Each

Well Known Sports Teams with Native American Mascots Have you thought about the name or

towards Native Americans and their culture. However, many teams do not intentionally use their
mascots to discriminate against Natives. Instead, they represent Native American Tribes and use
names to respect the history of the tribal nation. Others would say that sports teams are just using
those native titles to gain more fans. Also, natives would argue that professional sports teams are
making fun of their tribes because of the decisions that the team has made about the way that the
native cultures are portrayed. People would say that teams with native mascots have lack of respect
towards Native Americans. However, many professional sports teams that are named after a native
tribe are respectful towards the native heritage in ways such as having a partnership with the tribe,
honoring a leader that the team was named after, and even helping out a tribe. Many areas of the world

23. Goals And Value Chain Analysis Of Dunkin Donuts
Dunkin Donuts Value Chain Analysis Even though Dunkin Donuts is an international business, each
individual store has its own set of goals and missions to achieve success. This is also known as the
value chain, which is the process or activities by which a company adds value to an article, including
production, marketing, and the provision of after sales service. (Oxford) After observing and working
for Dunkin Donuts, the business success is primarily based off the happiness of their loyal customers
and smooth teamwork of their employees. This particular Dunkin Donuts on Western Avenue in
Peoria, Illinois is faced with a lot of challenges, but with the right approach to these challenges can
make their business even more successful. A mission statement is a formal summary of the aims and
values of a company, organization or individual. (Oxford) Mission statements are important in

Keeping customers happy and meeting their needs will keep this business striving. Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, also known as SWOT, is apart of every business. Businesses
must embrace and adapt to SWOT in order to make them successful. This could be by taking

24. Road Not Taken Obstacles
Adventure and The Road Not Taken have similar stories with characters that go through the same
obstacles. In Robert s poem and Sherwood s short story, they both have characters that come to a fork
in the road. Thus, the characters have to make a difficult decision that will change their future and life.
In The Road Not Taken , the traveler must choose from two roads to continue. The traveler does not
know what to do, and the traveler stands there pondering his decision. The traveler has a big decision
to make, and the traveler chooses the road less traveled by. Moreover, this decision was life changing
for the traveler. For example, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference
(McMichael 1132). The traveler s decision ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ned loved Alice, but he ended up moving to Cleveland for a brighter and better future. Robert and
Sherwood wrote stories with characters that had to face obstacles, and those obstacles were making
decisions that would change their lives. Another similarity between these stories is The Road Not
Taken is represented in Adventure . For example, the traveler (Ned) has to choose from two roads.
This is like the poem The Road Not Taken because the two roads Ned has to choose from are to stay in
the country (Winesburg) or take a chance in the city. A lot of people in Winesburg choose to stay in the
small town they grew up in like Alice and her family. Ned decides as the traveler to take the road less
traveled by which is the city life. Moreover, Ned is like the traveler in Robert s poem because Ned s
decision changed his life too. For example, Then he was caught up by the life of the city; he began to
make friends and found new interests in life (McMichael 1266). Ned s decision changed his life
because the city has more people Ned can interact with and more passions to

25. An Analysis of The Story of Rahab Essay
An Analysis of The Story of Rahab
The main point of the story of Rahab is that God rewards people, regardless of their station or past
sins, who put their faith in Him.
The story of Rahab begins when Joshua, after receiving God s command to enter into the Promised
Land, sends two spies into Jericho and the surrounding areas to view the land (Joshua 2:1). The two
spies are discovered in Jericho as they enter Rahab s harlot house. The king of Jericho, being alerted to
their presence, sends for the spies. Rahab hides the two spies on her roof under some flax and sends
the guards out of the city on a wild goose chase. Rahab then tells the spies that everyone in the land is
afraid of their power and that she knows that their God is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jericho was a pagan city so Rahab probably had a lot of business. Notice that she owned and operated
the brothel. Rahab was a successful business woman. She took charge of situations and was able to
make fast, smart decisions. When the guards came to her house she quickly hid the spies on her roof
and made up a clever story to not only throw the search party off but to get them out of Jericho for
three days. Rahab saw a perfect opportunity to save herself from the impending doom and because of
her intelligent and bold actions she was able to take advantage of it. One might even suspect her of
informing the king of the spy s presence.
Rahab s relationship to the spies throughout the story also shows an element of her nature. From the
moment that the spies enter her house and are found out, Rahab has the upper hand in the relationship.
The spies need Rahab to help them. She uses their dependence on her protection and her familiarity
with the city to her advantage. Rahab is a survivor. She looks out for her own skin. The truth of her
supposed religious devotion to the God of the Israelites is questionable. But true or not she had no
problem using that to help her family. Rahab was loyal to her family and would do anything to ensure
her family s safety.
Rahab s dialogue also shows her intelligence. Her talk with the spies reads like a man speaking. Rahab

26. Nonviolent Future By Michael Nagler
This study will define violence and non violence in the use of social ondit0oing, socialization, and the
negotiation process in The Search for a Nonviolent Future: A Promise of Peace for Ourselves, Our
Families, and Our World by Michael Nagler. Nagler s (2004) Two Force Theory defines an important
aspect of violence as an act of punishment and the non violent mode of utilizing love to resolve
conflicts. This dichotomous relationship between violence and non violence is part of the social
condition that has dominates the mind. This form of social conditioning provides insight into the
bargaining process that negotiates towards peace by reforming social values for the long term. By
negating short term conflict, the non violent practitioner ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nagler (2004) presents the Two Factor Theory through a definition provided by Gandhi. In this
perspective, violence tends to be based on punishment and the non violence is based on acts of love.
These two forces provide a framework for social conditioning and the socialization process that can
change a violent individual into a non violent peacemaker. Critically, Nagler (2004) does not provide
empirical evidence in relation to condition of the mind, but he does show the power of leaders, such as
Gandhi and martin Luther King Jr., to alter social beliefs through non violent methods of
bargaining/negotiations. More so, the historical track record of non violent negotiations tends to be
clear in the success tht Gandhi generated in uniting his country and bringing peace to the Indian
peoples. In this manner, the Two Force Theory provides an important way to understand violence and
non violence through social conditioning, socialization, and the negotiation process in Nagler s The

27. Legalization Of Same Sex Marriage
Gabi Smith

English 4
Mr. Pakula
Legalization of Same Sex Marriage Everyone has the right to be with the person they love. Nobody,
not even the government, should be able to take that kind of happiness and freedom away from
someone. If a girl loves another girl or a guy loves another guy, it should not matter to anyone else as
long as they are happy together. We are all equals in the world whether we are Black, White, Hispanic,
Indian, or any other race for that matter. Why should we not be equals based on sexuality orientation
(Gay Marriage Pros and Cons)? Everyone deserves to have the same equal rights. Everyone has
different beliefs and nothing can or will change that. Some people believe in same sex marriage and
some people do not, but there is still no reason to dislike or judge people that believe in something
someone else does not believe in. Not everyone in the world has the same beliefs. That is life, it
happens. So what is the point of being so against this one belief? Same sex couples do not walk
around bashing on straight people for the person they love, so why can t all straight couples do the
same thing and not bash on same sex couples?
Not only is this situation against some people s beliefs, but it also is against the constitution. The first
amendment of the constitution states that a person s religious beliefs or lack of thereof must be
protected. Legislatures also cannot discriminate against marriages of the minority party which

29. The Sandlot Analysis
The Sandlot : A little field never meant so much
Have you ever wondered what it would be like living as a teenager in the 1960s? Even though filmed
in 1993, The Sandlot does an outstanding job taking you back to the summer of 1963. It takes you
back in time to 1963 to a simple town in Utah. The Sandlot follows a timid young kid through hard
times, like moving to a new town and having to go through the struggle of finding new friends. The
struggle comes to an end when a compassionate young man comes up to him and gives him a life
changing opportunity. The Sandlot wonderfully depicts a unbreakable bond between a superstar
athlete and an introvert. The characters and actors honestly makes The Sandlot become a classic. The
setting and the plot really make you feel as if you were a teenager in 1960s time. The Sandlot consists
of the essentials of a memorable classic such as connections with audiences, a perfect setting,
tremendous characters, and an intriguing plot.
The Sandlot provides many opportunistic connections with the viewers to make it a memorable movie.
For example, The Sandlot starts off with a struggle many kids face today, with Smalls , a timid young
man moving to an unknown town in Utah. In the beginning of his adventure Smalls is faced with the
dilemma of finding new friends. Luckily for him a compassionate ... Show more content on

30. The Museum Of Anthropology And The Smithsonian Museum
Try, if you would, to recall your last visit to a museum or other similar institution. Did you
immediately accept the information presented to you as fact? Did you stop to think about how a
particular exhibit represents a culture and whether or not it was accurate? Since their origin, museums
were created for the purpose of preservation and interpretation of the material culture they exhibit, and
have been the most widely accepted method for the dissemination of information pertaining to other
cultures. That being said, there is an increasing amount of discourse today questioning the value of
museums and the ways in which their exhibition of material culture actually serves to devalue or
misrepresent their cultures of origin. For this research paper, I have decided to focus in the collections
of material culture present in the Beloit College Logan Museum of Anthropology and the Smithsonian
Museum. First, I begin by sharing what I have learned about the history surrounding the origins of
museums. Next, I identify the ways in which museums obscure and misrepresent the cultures they
display through their exhibits either intentionally or otherwise. Finally, I attempt to utilize what I have
learned in order to compare the two institutions and identify the ways in which they have taken steps
to keep up with modern museological and discourse.
To begin, preservation and interpretation, the concepts that form the basis of museums, originates
from the human inclination to acquire

31. Daddy By Sylvia Plath Figurative Language
The poem, Daddy , by Sylvia Plath, made the reader feel the hatred and bitterness the speaker felt
towards her father. This poem could also be used to let the speaker find peace and finally let go of all
the emotional torment her father may have caused her before his death. Throughout the poem, she
used a complex combination of imagery and figurative language to describe how she felt towards her
father when she realized who he really was a brute man with no heart. Plath uses imagery throughout
this poem to convey the severity of the wrongdoings she had experienced in her life. For example, in
line 56, she says, Bit my pretty red heart in two, which appeals to the sense of sight. This part is found
as she is describing the picture that

33. Imperialism And Militarism
It may be difficult to lay the blame of an entire world war on a singular country, but many historians
agree that Austria Hungary and Germany carry the weight of the blame of for the occurrence of World
War I. The historians Professor John Rohl (University of Sussex), Dr. Annika Mombauer (The Open
University), and Professor Gary Sheffield (University of Wolverhampton) all agree that Germany s
support of Austria Hungary with the blank cheque when they declared war on Serbia forced the hand
of other countries to join. Imperialism and militarism played a large role in the eagerness for Germany
and Austria Hungary to begin a war. Militarism was a large in factor in why both Germany and Austria
Hungary were more than willing to declare war on Serbia. Both countries had knowledge that it would
most certainly escalate into a European war at the very least, given Russia s interest in preventing the
expansion of the Austria Hungary empire further into the Balkans. Dr. Annika Mombauer believes that
war was avoidable; Germany put pressure on Austria Hungary to declare war, viewing it as a
favorable opportunity to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

fact to why Austria Hungary and Germany were both eager to declare war on Serbia. Both countries
had interests in securing more territory in the Balkans. As pointed out by Professor Gary Sheffield and
Dr. Mombauer, they were aware that Russia would not stand idle to let the Triple Alliance expand into

35. Ecocritical Analysis Of Nehru
Abstract: The main objective of this study is to attempt an ecocritical analysis of Jawaharlal Nehru s
Glimpses of World History. Jawaharlal Nehru (1889 1964) is one of the greatest statesmen and writers
of the twentieth century. He has written a number of books of which Glimpses of World History is an
outstanding contribution to Indian Literature in English. His letters to his daughter clearly reveal
Nehru s interest on ecocritical tropes and his ecological sensibility. As a lover of nature, he imparts
this characteristic to his daughter, Indira Gandhi too. Ecocriticism has gained the attention of many
scholars over the last three decades throughout the world. It depicts the relationship between human
and nature depiction of nature in literature. This theory has been gaining popularity day by day
because of the ecological disaster which the humans witness in everyday life. This study analyses the
letters of Nehru from an ecocritical point of view by using various ecocritical tropes like wilderness,
pastoral, animals, and pollution and apocalypse (ecocide) for understanding the ecological sensibility
of Nehru. This study s approach is to concentrate on the major ... Show more content on

36. Social Movement Literature Review
Introduction:
Throughout history, social movement organizations (SMOs) or small groups, loosely connected by a
shared purpose have created transformational change. Charles Tilly defines social movements as a
series of contentious performances, displays and campaigns, by which ordinary people make
collective claims on others (Tilly 2004:3). Examples of these movements are the Women s suffrage,
civil rights and the LGBTQ movement. Similar forces are transforming businesses, military affairs
and religion. SMOs have become an important part of society because these movements provide a
forum for grievances and demands to be heard. These movements also provide citizens an institution
outside of the traditional political system.
The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to better understand the potential connection between the old
and new movements and 2) determine if a certain theory, strategy, method or goal makes a social
movement more or less successful compared to others as it takes more than feelings of frustration to
persuade an individual to sacrifice time, money, relationships on these grievances. As will be indicated
in the literature review, there are several arguments concerning the success of social movements.
Literature review:
This literature review provides an overview of the major ideas represented in the literature of social
movement theory. McAdam, McCarthy and Zald (1996) offer a framework intended to explain social
movements emergence, development and
