According to The Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket), in 2016, Norrköping was the biggest
receiver of asylum seekers in the county of Östergötland. Statistics and figures in themselves can be
perceived as intimidating and heavy, and viewing newcomers as a single large group can be scary.
However, people are from all walks of life, no different from you and I. Ignorance only breeds fear
and hate, but curiosity brings understanding and awareness. For that reason and because their specific
experiences hinge on the intersection of being both LGBTQ+ and a newcomer, this article focuses on
queer newcomers in Norrköping. In collaboration with RFSL, Norrköping Pride and the Swedish
Migration Board, several interviews were conducted with both newcomers and people working with

Background Since the Industrial Revolution, there has been an increased presence of pollutants and
carcinogens in the environment, specif ically in urban areas.1 The presence of airborne pollutants can
lead to an increase in allergic reactions and asthma rates. A common airborne pollutant is carbon
monoxide (CO), which is commonly found in diesel exhaust. It is an odorless gas produced from me
thane and non methane hydrocarbon oxidation.2 The toxic gas eliminates and takes the place of
oxygen in the form of carboxy hemoglobin when it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. It also
affects the binding sites of heme groups, which complicates the transfer of oxygen to tissues.3 The
majority of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning is brought on from car exhaust.4 Between the
years 1979 and 1988, 57% of deaths from carbon monoxide poi soning were brought from car
exhaust. There tend to be higher rates of carbon monoxide poisoning from car exhaust in northern
regions, where temperatures are relatively low (Figure 1). 5
A way to approach the elimination of carbon monoxide from car exhaust is through the use of
organometallic catalysts. Through the use of a catalyst, a reaction can occur at a faster rate and at

INTRO: Despite difference of around 400 years between them Greek poet Homer and tragedian
playwright Euripides explore many of the same themes in their works the Odyssey and Trojan Women
(written by each respectively). Both works are inspired by the events of 12th Century BCE Trojan War
that Homer previously explored in the Iliad. The two examine the worth of cunning over brute

The Focus Of My Action Research
The focus of my action research will be in first time students, students going through Intensive
English curriculum in order to comply with Homeland Security criteria that international students
must be English proficient before taking academic classes. I believe that we should do everything
possible to ensure that they succeed and not place roadblocks in their paths.
My student s survey and interviews focused on their college experiences. Others questioned their
assessment of their college classes, teachers, student service departments and so on. Questions on
whether they would recommend the college to others, but my focus was on their college experience as
an integrating themselves into college life.
Some of the themes that are emerging are that most find lacking in matching schedules with courses
offered. The lack of classes being offered in one campus and sometimes having to take morning and
evening schedules in a single day forcing some to go home or to a library and return hours later for the
next class. The isolation from the general population when enrolled in the Intensive English program.
The positive themes that are emerging are that a high percentage are satisfied with the resources and

On Saturday, May 20th, I attended a production of Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire.
This production, put on by the Scottish Ballet at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, offered a simmering story
of sexuality and betrayal. Prior to my viewing of the performance, I sat in on the pre lecture where I
was enlightened on the background of the story and choreographer. A Streetcar Named Desire is one
of the few works to be performed as a play, a movie, and a dance production. The choreographer of
this production, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, was discussed as being an accomplished artist whose love of
jazz and hip hop influenced her creative decisions. The lecturer also touched upon how Williams life

of World War II, there is a sense of newfound modernity and resistance to the old ways. Immediately

It s fair to say that both narratives show how Cortázar tests the boundaries of unreality and reality.
However, Cortázar took alternative approaches in order to present this in the respective stories. In the
case of Las babas del diablo, Cortázar introduced a first and third person narration into the story. The
introduction of a third person narrator highlighted the inner turmoil that Michel was experiencing, thus
forcing the reader to question his reliability as a narrator. As readers we were unable to trust Michel s
version of events yet, we were still unable to completely disregard it as it was clear he had a traumatic
